Hello, I do not know when this started. I rebooted my machine and couldn't connect to the internet. Execution of command "[["/usr/sbin/ip", "link", "set", "wlan0", "up"]]" failed. Exit code: 2 Error output: RTNETLINK answers: Input/output error I am not sure how to deal with it The device is a RT-AC3100 router. It has been working flawlessly for over 2 years. Vietnamese virtual keyboard

I'm traveling to Vietnam next month and I'm looking for a Vietnamese virtual keyboard for my laptop. I can only find it online, I want a local VK. I don't want to configure the physical keyboard. I just want something for passwords and URLs. Anybody have a suggestion? I have Leap 15.4 and GNOME 41.2. Jon Cosby

xrdb and display:0

I use x11vnc and a vnc client to connect to remote Linux desktops from other Linux computers. I have no problem connecting to display :0. As such, I can remotely access that desktop and help users with support and such. I would like Windows clients to be able to do the same. So I have installed Xrdp. And I can get a desktop from the Linux computer (Leap 15.3). There are two problems I do not seem to be able to solve: 1. I can only get icewm. I want KDE. I have tried editing /etc/xrdp/startwm.sh so that it should start plasma. But it does not work. 2. I cannot get it to share display:0. In fact, that's what I really want. It is running the desktop I am really after. I have tried things like making my own definition in Xrdp that should access display:0, based on various suggestions. No go. My question is: has anyone gotten either of these things to work? Or, should I install a Windows client and access x11vnc? I have been trying not to need to install software on the Windows clients if at all possible. But I can if Xrdp won't do as I would like. -- Roger Oberholtzer

I have found Google like to make it difficult to find things, but one thing that has me beat is saved passwords. I have followed the directions that take me to Auto-fill > Saved Passwords, but there is nothing saved there. Any ideas? tnx jk

Hello - I have a recalcitrant computer running OpenSuSE 15.3 that is refusing to start the KDE/Plasma desktop. After login I get a dialog box saying "startkde: Could not start kdeinit5. Check your installation." Despite the fact that the KDE/Plasma desktop won't start, I can SSH into the system and everything else (processes, services) I want running do start up OK. How to delete obs page

Hi does any of you know: I received a friendly reminder if I could remove my project from Open Build Service as I have not used it for long. Indeed I have not and I have checked that others have now made packages for the same software. Problem now is that I cant find out how to delete it via the project page on build.opensuse.org. I found the "Actions on this page" and used "Request delete" but that just sends me another email request to delete it. Will the project still be deleted automatically in NN days - or will my own request to delete it now be counted as project activity, and upset the deletion :-( -- Regards Klaus

Hello, So, I wanted to check out the kernel version in OpenSuse Leap 15.4. I go to https://software.opensuse.org/ , select Leap 15.4, enter "kernel"... and it finds nothing. For 15.2 it works. I tried other searches (plasma, mc, python, bash) with 15.4 selected. Still nothing. System keyboard settings across reboots

Hello, I am running Tumbleweed+Gnome+x11 on a Lenovo x1carbon Gen8 with a US Intl keyboard (including *AltGr* and *€* keys on the number row), and I'm confused about how my system keyboard settings are persisted across reboots. In short, my machine uses "US International" as it's system keyboard, but the behavior reverts to something else(?) that Yast thinks is US International but behaves differently from what my intended behavior is. I often use accents in Dutch (é, ú, ü), which I prefer to type by using an apostrophe followed by the letter ('+e => é). This is possible when using "US International" as my system keyboard; however, for some reason this setting is not respected between reboots. After I reboot, my machine reverts to a "simpler" keyboard setting where '+e => 'e instead of é, even though Yast still reports that my system keyboard is set to "us-intl". > $ sudo yast keyboard summary > Current Keyboard Layout: us-int The only way I've found to reset my preference is through the Yast Keyboard GUI and re-selecting "US International" after logging on. Advice on buying an old AMD FirePro graphics card

HI Not sure if this is the correct place to ask this. I'm currently using an old Nvidia card which sometimes makes horrible screaming noises when viewing videos. I've decided to go to AMD instead and looking at old cheap AMD Firepro cards (my system is old), I was just wondering if anyone has any experience of them on Tumbleweed and old Gigabyte (PCEe 2.0, AMD CPU) motherboards. How do I get RPM from branched package on my Build Service?

All/Devs, I branched keepassxc and made the changes needed to install it with KDE3 without deleting the original keepassx. The build succeeds on build service, but I can't find the rpm. The Download link goes to my repository, but clicking the link says the repo isn't available: https://software.opensuse.org//download.html?project=home%3Adrankinatty%3Ab… Checking the direct repository: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/drankinatty:/branches:/ It's not there yet either? In the past within a minute or two after building the package would be in my repo, but there seems to be a hiccup. This is why I usually just build locally with rpmbuild -- at least then I can find the darn rpm when the build is done. Currently the build is finished for the 2nd time after cleaning up a RPM Lint complaint about the changelog, but still I can't seem to find the rpm. The only reason I used buildservice this time is the 15.4 Backport update .srpm will not build locally due to: error: Failed build dependencies: pkgconfig(libpcsclite) is needed by keepassxc-2.7.1-bp154.3.3.1.x86_64 There is no libpcsclite package available that provide the .pc file. No -devel, no nothing, just the libs -- which is why I tried build-service which succeeds, but hides how it did it behind the magic curtain. (do I have to hack a .pc file on my own for 15.4?) Anyway -- where do I find the rpm I just build on build service? It succeeded, it's just not in my repo or anywhere else I can find it. What's the trick? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

How would you do this?

Hi Folks, I'm anticipating a requirement where I'll have lots of data on a large RAID-6 partition. The data consists of many 7-GB files that were uploaded over several Ethernet channels. The files then need to be copied to individual "JBOD" disks plugged into the same chassis as the RAID-6 array. Alas, there is more data on the RAID-6 then will fit on one JBOD disk, so I've got to come up with a process that will copy the files to a disk, then stop when the disk is full, prompt the operator to unmount and remove the JBOD, then plug in another one, and mount to continue the process. Repeat until all the data are copied to as many JBOD's as it takes. I think I can convince tar to write to multiple volumes and prompt to change media, but I don't want to treat the JBOD's as character devices, or like a tape drive in other words. I'd like to take any one of the disks in a series and mount them on another host and read the files without having to load the other disks in that series. I'm thinking a fancy shell script is called for here. I bet that rsync should be leveraged to allow restarting from an aborted copy process. Any ideas? It seems to be a common requirement, maybe someone's done it already? Regards, Lew

How to get out of KDE

Hi, I use mate and openbox in TW, and thought I'd have a look at KDE. So I installed KDE as described here: https://en.opensuse.org/SDB:KDE_install However, my display manager, lightdm, has now been replaced by KDE's display manager, SDDM I believe, with which I can only log into KDE. So I'm stuck with KDE! In YaST's sysconfig editor, Desktop > Display manager, everything is greyed out. In /etc/sysconfig/displaymanager, if I add 'DISPLAYMANAGER=lightdm', it has no effect. So how could I still log into a window manager other than KDE?

T-Bird/pwd(?) issue

I frown on sensitive data like passwords being stored AT ALL, so MY method and THE method for any software on MY computer has to be MANUALLY input pwds EVERY time. With every app including any trace or form of kwallet tabooed in valiant Yast, and a brand new instance of T-Bird launched, I observed that AFTER supplying my usenet provider id and pwd I could get a list of groups from which I could select any to subscribe to. Fine, all is as it should be. Next comes the fubar, on a relaunch of T-Bird after a right click on my usenet server to do more subscribes all I get is 'Please Wait'. No dialog asking for the usenet provider id/pwd any more. I can only suspoect that my usenet provider giganews is waiting for an id/pwd that isn't coming while I'm wondering where the id/pwd dialog went. openSUSE Tumbleweed , Kernel=6.0.0-1-default on x86_64, DM=sddm, DE=KDE, ST=x11,grub2, GPT, BIOS-boot -- Oh Lord of the Keyrings on high, have I got bad news for you: the word trust is nowhere to be found in my security dictionary.

Using Let's Encrypt SSL Certificates with Postfix/Dovecot

All, If you host a mail server, you know the painful reality of new security restrictions imposed by mail programs refusing to send or receive mail due to SSL/TLS certificate complaints. E.g. self-signed, expired ... The good news is if you also run a web server and have SSL certificates for your domain, you can use the same certificates for your mail host. I use letsencrypt.org for the web certs (free as open-source and Linux should be). After the latest round of IOS updates and having my self-signed cert expire, I decided to just bite the bullet and put my mail server(s) on real certificates so I don't have to deal with this again -- it worked. The changes for dovecot are simple, just remove any self-signed cert you were using with `ssl_dh=...` and then add the path to your full certificates in conf.d/10-ss.conf, e.g. /etc/dovecot/conf.d/10-ssl.conf ssl_cert = </etc/letsencrypt/live/rlfpllc.com/fullchain.pem ssl_key = </etc/letsencrypt/live/rlfpllc.com/privkey.pem You also need to add the cert paths to your postfix main.cf config: /etc/postfix/main.cf smtpd_tls_cert_file = /etc/letsencrypt/live/rlfpllc.com/fullchain.pem smtpd_tls_key_file = /etc/letsencrypt/live/rlfpllc.com/privkey.pem Now IOS is happy with your mail cert chain, but .. Thunderbird needs a few additional tweaks. The Thunderbird config editor changes needed are: security.OCSP.GET.enabled: true security.OCSP.enabled: 1 security.OCSP.require: true security.ssl.enable_ocsp_must_staple: false security.ssl.enable_ocsp_stapling: true Of those settings, the only one I needed to add was the first one, and the only other chnage was to toggle the setting on enable_ocsp_must_staple. mariadb update gives warning about insecure path owner mysql

All, This was odd, but understandable. zypper up on 15.4 tonight produced the following warning on mariadb update: /usr/lib64/mysql/plugin/auth_pam_tool_dir/auth_pam_tool: on an insecure path - /usr/lib64/mysql/plugin/auth_pam_tool_dir has different non-root owner who could tamper with the file. Well, not quite the hair-on-fire tamper opening you would expect. The parent directory owner is our good friend mysql from days gone by which I suspect has just been happily carried over release after release, etc... The directory in question: l /usr/lib64/mysql/plugin/auth_pam_tool_dir total 20 drwxr-x--- 2 root mysql 4096 Oct 4 01:41 . drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Oct 4 01:41 .. -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 10408 Sep 16 05:12 auth_pam_tool So if this is even worth worrying about, it looks like the warning needs to be fixed somewhere to recognize group mysql as the proper group for directory ownership. -- David C. FF 102 - Font Rendering Improved

All, With FF 102, aside from Carlos's ulimit issue, font rendering seems much improved. However, the bookmark and menu entry height is still 2X too tall due to GTK bunglekit. Similar with TB 102, all seems good -- but I would still like to have a permanent Cc: in the new message window instead of the ellipsized list top-right. But some setting is wrong that makes the printer pop its yellow light with a prompt for feeding A4 or press OK for use what is available (and the printer is loaded with A4). And the Mozilla dialog says the size is A4. This means that for every print I have to get up from my chair and go to the printer to press that key. An option at the end of the dialog says "print using the system dialog". If I use this, there is no error and the printer fires immediately. Leap 15.4 - GDM won't start

I'm not even able to log in to the terminal, if I don't change the kernel. Back to GRUB, if I enter the advanced options and select the recovery mode of the 5.14.21-150400.22-default kernel (the one from the Main repo, not the Update repo), at least I'm able to switch to the first terminal (Ctrl + Alt + F1), log in to the terminal and do: $ startx Then I have a fully functional GNOME desktop. I'm currently running a Nextcloud instance on a VPS using OpenSUSE Leap 15.3. I will need to update the operating system before the end of November. I was planning to create a new instance of Leap 15.4 at my provider to get a fresh start, and then transfer data and then DNS. I'm intrigued with MicroOS's read- only file system and atomic updates. I'm wondering what the best strategy is for running the services on MicroOS. On my server I'm running the following services: nginx php-fpm postgresql redis rspamd postfix dovecot I'm thinking that I would run postfix and postgresql directly on the MicoOS system and the remainder as docker or podman containers. Does anyone have any experience/thoughts on this? Thanks Mark

All, Just saw on announce that Tbird will update to 102. I did testing a couple of months ago with it for a heavy CPU use issue in the 91 version -- it is fixed in 102. However, the install of 102 will modify your ~/.thunderbird profile in place and it is a one-way modification without any way to undo it if you need to go back for any reason. Make a quick tar.xz backup of your existing ~/.thunderbird directory before you do the upgrade just to be on the safe side. I liked 102, so I don't expect issues, but when anything modifies a profile in place -- it's always good to have a backup. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Mouse freezes randomly but often

Hello, since today I have a big problem with my mouse. It freezes randomly. As much as I can see, only the mouse freezes (I can use the keyboard, the gkrellm window shows activities, the radio keeps running). It starts with stagnant movement of the mouse, then it freezes completely for several seconds and then the cursor jumps to where I move it last. Then it works normal for a while, but soon starts again. I have the problem since today (yesterday I run the updates). I had the same problem like a month ago, but then it went away "magically" after I changed the mouse-receiver to another usb-plug, but this time it doesn't help... Of course I changed the battery of the mouse, I also changed to another mouse (of the same model), plugged the wireless receiver to several different usb-plugs at the computer... reboot only helps for a short while. python executable name

I see that on a newly installed Tumbleweed, only Python 3.10 is installed. No problem with that. However, there is no executable called 'python'. Only 'python3' and 'python3.10'. Is this a general thing? That perhaps 'python' always references Python 2? Would something break if I made a 'python' link to 'python3'? Obviously, the code called would need to expect it. And I can make sure that's the case for our code. But generally in Tumbleweed/Leap would this confuse something? -- Roger Oberholtzer

firewalld and root password

I am running OpenSuSE 15.3 x64 and am struggling with setting up Firewalld. At the moment I have lots of questions and will probably ask more questions in different threads in the near future. Right now I would like to ask why does Firewalld-config keep badgering me for the root password while I am trying to work with it, and how do I get it to stop. I have set it up in the Application Menu to run as the root user, and I expect it to ask me for the root password initially once, after starting up. But this constant badgering me to keep entering the root password, after different operations (for example changing the view from Temporary to Permanent, changing the zone I want to work with, adding a Rich rule, or a Direct Configuration rule, etc., ) is ridiculous and very annoying. Once is enough! Lately, there seem to be a lot of problems with the updates. Normally, I just let the Software Updates run and all is fine. But lately, it seems almost every time there are problems, which require I go into Yast > Software Updates, to find the problem package(s) and choose the fix needed to proceed. This is something that used to be rare, but is now commonplace. Here's one example: Update Error the to be installed gtk3-branding-openSUSE-15.0-lp154.2.2.1.noarch requires 'libgtk-3-0 = 3.24.31', but this requirement cannot be provided

Update woes

I have a Tumbleweed system that is a little out of date. (Different discussion.) For whatever reason (local IT complaints), I decided to update Jenkins (CI system). We use it, but not in a critical way. So if the update failed, no real problem. After updating it, it complained that the java we had was too old. okay, It's the only java app, so same for this, a successful update is not critical. Well, after updating these two things (java was a number of packages), all hell has broken loose. I see that I missed that glibc was updated when Java was updated. Rookie mistake. I know better. But it is what it is. And glibc is usually pretty much backward compatible in that it usually contains recent API versions a well a the new one. So, I thought I would do a snapper rollback. Which I did. However, it looks like all the changes are still there. rpm --last reports all the updated RPMs. I expected that to have been reverted. Did I miss something. I'm afraid to reboot as I don't know what all is effected. I'm afraid to do the long delayed distro update as I don't know what might fail in some RPM script. I could consider doing a fresh install. All the important stuff on this system is on a separate RAID volume. It's just some configurations on root that I would like to keep. However, I nave a critical application (trac) that is still not Python 3 for production use. So I don't want to loose any Python 2 stuff that I have already installed. Any words of encouragement? As my evolving Tumbleweed desktop shows (in the top right panel) Web-Navigators (aka browsers but I call'em navigators out of respect for the original Netscape folk) are demanding exploding focus and attention for reasons that no one needs to expand upon. Would be timely if Suse included Librewolf among others. Thanks in advance :-) https://i.imgur.com/QbS0Oz4.png For some reason most of the ones I use are crashing left, right and center. I just installed a fresh Falkon and in default configuration it bombed on Netflix with a Netflix error message that I would even try to understand. Not all the complaints are about unsolicited snooping. I'm asking this from authors and not distro packagers but eventually I would like 'buttons' like for the more pupular video sites, others for layered levels of 'dark' form 'useful' to html rendered but 'wget pitch black'.

Tumbleweed won't shutdown correctly

Hi, Recently I upgraded my workstation from Leap to Tumbleweed. I'm using the KDE desktop. Looks like I can't shutdown anymore. When choosing the Shutdown option from the menu, graphics quit OK but I'm at a login console. No shutdown message, nothing, and I have to do a hard reset. Any suggestions ? kernel-firmware updates to 15.4 changed default handling of keypad [enter] key?

All, This is strange. I just did updates on 15.4 and there were kernel-firmware updates that somehow changed the default mapping of the keypad [enter] key. I discovered this almost immediately. When working with microcontrollers, I always send serial output to an xterm with minicom. When I need to flash, I exit minicom with [ctrl + a] then [x] and tap the keypad [enter] key. Immediately after updates, when I go to exit minicom and tap the keypad [enter] key, the Leave Minicom? Yes No dialog simply disappears and I remain in minicom. The normal keyboard [enter] key works just fine. I don't notice anything different check with xev, the keypresses still look right, e.g. the keypad and normal keyboard enter keys look correct. This is both a shout-out and a question by doesn't openSUSE provide the package? gcc provides the cross-arm-none-eabi toolchain used to program microcontrollers (TI, Raspberry, etc..) A build service user provides the packages is reasonable shape: https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/wkazubski/15.4/ But why doesn't openSUSE also provide the packages. The devel:/gcc repo provides the cross-arm-none full packages, but not the eabi sub-packages. This is the difference between as 26M install and an a 1.8G install. For example with the Pi-Pico, there is no need for 1.75G of the devel:/gcc packages. Why not provide the eabi subpackages? Make Kwallet behave ?

Hi, I've been a KDE user since version 2.x on Slackware more than 20 years ago. I really like it for my daily work, but some details are a bit of a PITA. Kwallet is one of them. Here's a few scenarios that happen erratically on my Tumbleweed installations. 1. KDE starts, Kwallet pops up immediately and leaves me about ten seconds to type in my very long GPG password. In the background, applications that need a password to connect (like OwnCloud) fail and have to be restarted. 2. KDE starts, Wi-Fi tries to connect but fails, OwnCloud asks me for the connection password, and after about a minute or so, Kwallet decides to pop up too late to the show. 3. KDE starts, Kwallet pops up, I type in my password fast enough, Wi-Fi connects but OwnCloud asks me for the connection password even though Kwallet has been opened successfully. Any idea how I can make Kwallet behave ? tumbleweed setfacl on sddm login mystery

I noticed on my existing tumbleweed desktop, when I login a setfacl appears to be setting permissions on /dev/i2c-1 and they are reassigned to sddm on logout. % getfacl /dev/i2c-1 getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names # file: dev/i2c-1 # owner: root # group: root user::rw- user:michael:rw- group::--- mask::rw- other::--- This appears to happen for all users. But on a recently installed tumbleweed I don't see this behavior - no users have access to the i2c devices, no ACL's are assign on login. There is no i2c related group on either the old or new machine. Both machines are on the latest tumbleweed, both run Nvidia's driver. So I would expect the same behaviour on both. I do see that the nvidia devices have ACL's set on login (so perhaps this is X11 or nvidia related): getfacl /dev/nvidia0 getfacl: Removing leading '/' from absolute path names # file: dev/nvidia0 # owner: root # group: video user::rw- user:michael:rw- group::rw- mask::rw- other::--- It's possible I setup something years ago and have forgotten about it. Desktop search on Tumbleweed : Recoll or similar applications

Hi, A few weeks ago I decided to move all my desktop installations from OpenSUSE Leap to Tumbleweed, since it looks like the latter gets more love from the developers. So far things look good. I only have a small number of details to tackle. Under Leap I've been using Recoll, a nifty desktop search application that's quite powerful, though it's also a bit of a resource hog. https://www.lesbonscomptes.com/recoll/ Under Leap the Recoll package was provided by the KDE:Extra repository. Now I have a few questions. 1) If I want to use Recoll under Tumbleweed, what's the recommended way to install it ? 2) Can you guys recommend a similar desktop search application ? Recoll is great for finding the proverbial needle in the haystack, like for example a single sentence in gigabytes of mail archives, or even a character string in a PDF or even a Word document. But maybe there are other applications out there that do the job well ? Tensorflow

Is anyone using tensorflow/tensorflow2 on Leap 15.3? I can only find tensorflow-lite, which is a scaled down version for things like mobile devices. Has it dropped off the radar? In OBS, it seems to be locked for all targets, and I don't see any previous builds anywhere. I thought maybe it was only available for SLE15. But I don't see those packages. Perhaps I don't know where to look for SLE15 packages that might be compatible with 15.3. IIRC, on a recent Leap release (15.0?), tensorflow and such tools were listed as a big part of what the release added. Is that no longer the case? I have looked at contacting the maintainer (https://build.opensuse.org/package/users/openSUSE:Leap:15.3/tensorflow) but last time I contacted someone listed as a maintainer, I got a surprisingly rude response that they were in fact not the maintainer. Tumbleweed: prevent SSH client from sending environment variables

Hi, Up until a few weeks ago, I ran OpenSUSE Leap as my daily driver. I only recently moved to Tumbleweed, which seems to get more attention by the OpenSUSE developers. One of the things I did on my Leap system was reconfigure the SSH client in order to *not* send any environment variables. To do this, I opened /etc/ssh/ssh_config and found the relevant stanza: SendEnv LANG LC_CTYPE LC_NUMERIC LC_TIME LC_COLLATE LC_MONETARY LC_MESSAGES SendEnv LC_PAPER LC_NAME LC_ADDRESS LC_TELEPHONE LC_MEASUREMENT SendEnv LC_IDENTIFICATION LC_ALL I simply commented this out and reloaded SSH: # systemctl reload sshd I tried to do this with Tumbleweed, but I don't have an /etc/ssh/ssh_config file. Instead, I only have an empty /etc/ssh/ssh_config.d directory. So I guess my SSH client has all default values defined at build time. What would be an orthodox approach to prevent it from sending any environment variables ? TW: boot problem kernel 5.18.9-2 and higher

Hardware: Dell XPS 8940 11th Gen Intel i7-11700 (16) @ 4.800GHz NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti I'm using latest TW-release with kernel 5.19.0-1-default and NVIDIA driver 515.65.01 installed the hard way. kernel 5.18.9-2 or higher seems to give a (plymouth) problem. The problem doesn't occur with kernel 5.18.9-1-default or lower. Booting up with one of these kernels the plymouth boot screen stops displaying after this line: I915 0000:00:02.0: enabling device (0006 -> 0007) Eventually I get to the KDE login screen. The problem is that I'm using the hard way to install NVIDIA. This makes I can't boot when a new kernel is installed as the boot process ends up with a black screen. VirtualBox Puel Crashes After Latest Updates on 15.4 Qt related.

All, I am running Virtualbox 6.1.36 PUEL version (I need the USB). It has run fine for years and years (since version 3.X). Today I went to start it and it would not load. Starting from the command line as my user, I get: VirtualBox Qt FATAL: FATAL: The application binary appears to be running setuid, this is a security hole. Aborted Huh? WTF? Obviously it is unhappy with Qt or vice versa. This worked fine a couple of weeks ago. What to check to narrow down the issue? I can su and then VirtualBox runs, but since it is running under root, none of my VM's are found. Running with sudo -E I receive: No protocol specified No protocol specified Qt CRITICAL: This application failed to start because no Qt platform plugin could be initialized. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem. Available platform plugins are: eglfs, linuxfb, minimal, minimalegl, offscreen, vnc, xcb. Now running su'ed to root, Virtualbox starts and the dialog appears, but no vms are shown. The following warning is shown on the command line: Qt WARNING: QStandardPaths: runtime directory '/run/user/1000' is not owned by UID 0, but a directory permissions 0700 owned by UID 1000 GID 1060 What has changed with Qt these past two weeks that is causing VirtualBox to freak out? -- David C. Permissions of /usr/local/bin

/usr/local/bin is owned by root with permissions 755, so as a user I cannot put a script in there. I can change the ownership, but every time after a reboot it is owned by root again, with permissions 755. Does anyone know where this is set, and/or how I can make /usr/local/bin permanently make writable for a user?

NetworkManager

I have to computers, - "hewpac" with Leap 15.2 installed and - "azure" with Leap 15.4, both working under KDE and connected to the router via WiFi. For a long time, both worked under the so-called Wicked connection. But yesterday in the morning, this type of connection failed. Consequently I had to select NetworkManager for having them connected. After an hour, the NetworkManager connection of "azure" (Leap 15.4) failed, and since then it cannot be re-established any more. When i click the "Networks" mini-icon in the panel, four routers in the neighborhood are listed under "Available connections", but mine is not. What can I do for making it find my router again? Build libheif to support heif-convert of Apple .heic files to .jpg/.png (and enable open by Gimp)

All, If you have ever been stuck with a native iPhone .heic file on Linux it is a pain in the .... However, you can simply rebuild the current source package for 15.4 (or 15.3, etc..): http://download.opensuse.org/source/distribution/leap/15.4/repo/oss/src/lib… using rpmbuild and the "--with x265" option to enable building with libde265-0 and libx265-199 (both from packman) which will build the heif-examples package that provides: /usr/bin/heif-convert /usr/bin/heif-enc /usr/bin/heif-info /usr/bin/heif-thumbnailer You will also need to install the corresponding -devel packages as well along with librav1e0 and rav1e-devel, and libaom3 and libaom-devel. The list of subpackages created using the x265 option are: gdk-pixbuf-loader-libheif heif-examples libheif-devel libheif1 The available gimp-plugin-heif, allows Gimp to open .heic files directly after you have build and installed the updated version. You will also need to create a *.heic *.HEIC file association for whatever desktop you are using in order to enable the rt-click context menu "Open with Gimp". Primary use I have is simply to convert the same .heic files I get sent. After the updated package is installed, it's as simple as: $ heif-convert file.heic file.jpg I hacked a spec together which worked swimmingly, to ask on the packaging list about handing a couple of conflicts only to find the conditional build in the current openSUSE srpm already provided a path. Leap 15.3. Some time back got logrotate working to rotate fetchmail logs. Found that it seems to be no longer rotating that file. I noticed the logrotate.conf file is empty. Before delving any further I wanted to assure or disabuse myself of the notion that it matters not, as long as the proper configurations are in /etc/logrotate.d/def_for_my_log.

Hi, This I don't know. I'm not sure what is the problem, but I think I've had similar thing few years ago when we had Skype. The solution was to use the web version with Google Chrome. You *may* get some additional diagnostic info what is going on if you try to launch it from command line and see what is printed there. - Adam PS. viewing local shtml pages in browser

Once upon a time, in a land not far away, I created an Intranet site for my former company. This was back in the 2000s. It was a relatively simple static HTML site but certain page elements were pulled via Server Side Includes. I keep copies of that and other static HTML sites I created in local directories on my PC, not in a local server like /srv/www, there's no need, just in my home directory. I can still view all my other sites from there no problem in Firefox. I haven't looked at that Intranet site for a year or two, but now it doesn't work. Only the initial index.html page is plain HTML with no SSI, and fully viewable. All the other pages have an .shtml extension, so in the past I would have to forgo seeing certain non-loaded page elements in menus and title bars, and just navigate using the links in the main part of the view, which was good enough to still access all the main content. Now, clicking a link in Firefox from the index to any other page brings up a dialog box requesting which program I want to use to open the file. Firefox itself is the only suggestion and hence default option, so if I click OK it opens a new blank tab and throws up the dialog box again, and again, for eternity, without showing the page. The only two browsers I have installed on 15.4 are Firefox and Konqueror. I tried copying and pasting the URL into Konqueror, but when I hit Enter it just switches back to Firefox and presents the same dialog box. Indeed, I note that now Konqueror will only show pages on the web and doesn't want to show any local page, always directing me back to Firefox. This wasn't the case in the past. I've looked in Konqueror's settings and tried using the different view modes, e.g. KHTML, WebKit, but can't find a workaround there. I assume there's some security-based rationale for not showing these pages but I don't know at what level and whether I can override it. I've checked in Dolphin that shtml files are associated by default to open with Firefox. Anybody know a config option or other way to view such pages, or a browser which definitely still displays them? gumb

To test a website on my PC before uploading it to the webhoster, I can simply open the html files with a browser. But if the site contains PHP code, a local web server is needed. So I installed apache2 and php8. But what do I need to do further? The browser cannot find 'localhost' yet, and /var/www does not exist yet.

File system check question

Hi, As some of you may recognize, I have been calling on the fine gurus that lurk on this newsgroup for help with issues that come up with my attempts to upgrade/install OpenSuSE15.4 on one of my systems. I was in the middle of doing some detective work on a problem I am having, when the computer I was working on, froze up and forced me to reboot the system. Upon rebooting, the system decided to run a file system check on one of my drives. Unfortunately, this file system check has now been running for over 3 days and the message on the screen only shows 2 bits of information, one the UUID of the disk drive being checked, and second, the amount of time that has passed since the file system check started. Both of these tidbits of information are rather useless IMHO. Without stopping the check I have no idea which drive corresponds to that UUID and would need something like the YaST partitioner on a Live USB stick to identify which drive it is (by comparing disk labels, names of partitions, disk sizes, with UUIDs). But that is not my main concern, the other really important bit of info needed is an estimate of how long it will take to complete the file system check! I have 6 drives on this system (mostly used for backing up other systems on my SOHO network) and these drives range in size from 500Gb to 8Tb. My conundrum is this - do I continue to wait for the file system check to complete, not knowing how much longer it will take, or do I bag it, put in a new drive and install a new OpenSuSE 15.4 system? If I install a new OS on a new drive, I could get my backup services and other services I need running on this system, back up and running in 2 to 5 days (based on my previous experiences with installing a new system). I could then also run the file system check on the drive, which apparently has a problem, as a background task. Any suggestions on how to proceed or make a choice? Since this missed/needed user requirement, that of providing an estimated time till completion for doing file system checks, is a new feature request now, would it be worth it to submit a bug report (knowing from past experience that bug fixes and feature updates often take years to resolve) or is this simply some unmaintained old low-priority software that no one really supports anymore? As always, an educated guess will be much appreciated, I don't have the kind of experience with the file system checking software, or understand what it does exactly, to make a good guess myself. Is it safe to abort, by reboot or power cycle, a file system check that is in process? Hi list, I wonder if someone has seen similar problems, and/or has an idea what might be causing it. Since many weeks my Tumbleweed laptop shows an embarassing behavior: If I shade a window, and unshade again, the window height is reduced to 1 character height for text windows, or one pixel for graphical ones. It's the same whether I use the mouse wheel or the window menu for shading. The irritating part is: My desktop at home, also running TW, does not show this. So I assume it is some setting - I just don't have the foggiest idea where to look. I've tried to recursively grep for 'shade' in ~/.config, but that didn't reveal anything. I had opened a bugreport (boo#1200007), but without any response, so I thought I ask here, maybe someone knows where to look... :( I'm running plasma/kwin

ax25 package files missing.

I am in the process of installing the ax25.tools package on my OpenSuSE 15.4 x64 system and am discovering a few files that seem to be missing. /usr/local/etc was missing wl3k.conf and wl2k.conf.dist /usr/local/etc/ax25/ entire directory is missing which includes ax25-down, ax25-up, and links for axports and Lanparms. /etc/ax25/Lanparms file missing I know this is an obscure package used by crazy ham radio operators wanting to communicate via packet radio. Was there a reason these files were removed, nothing in the release note mention these files AFAIK, or maybe a packaging screw up? KDE NetworkManager

I have been using NetworkManager in KDE for a long time. It has been working great. Until now. I was helping a friend so I disabled NetworkManager in yast. All went fine. I could do what I needed to do in the network to sort out his thing. I then selected NetworkManager in yast again. I get nothing. I cannot even get the plasma widget back. Nada. I know about KDE's rather fragile state when it comes to plasmoid widgets. I just cannot see what is confusing things. I don't even see NetworkManager as a widget I can add. Shouldn't I be able to do so if it is no longer showing up automatically? I've googled this and see lots from a while back when this was all less stable- I don't see much recently. Wicked works. But I don't want to use yast to control wireless. I'm rather mobile with this computer. Pointers and suggestions welcome. It's a Tumbleweed system that is rather up-to-date. -- Roger Oberholtzer

How to set default window manager for auto login?

I have Tumbleweed with the MATE desktop and autologin enabled, and also installed the Openbox WM. Now how could I autologin into Openbox instead of MATE? In YaST's /etc/sysconfig editor, in Desktop > Window manager > DEFAULT_WM, the possible values are: default, gnome, plasma5, lxde, xfce, twm, icewm, enlightenment or 'any value'. So openbox is not among the options, and if I enter 'openbox', it has no effect. I also tried 'update-alternatives --config default-xsession.desktop' as suggested in the sysconfig editor, but then I can only opt for mate.desktop or icewm-session.desktop.

Updating glibc and filesystem on Tumbleweed

I have a server running Tumbleweed. It is a bit behind in terms of updates for reasons that are not relevant to my question (a Python 2-based server I don't dare mess up). I want to update a library with a package from OBS. That package has been built with a newer version of glibc. So zypper wants to update glibc as well. And a couple others like filesystem. My Tumbleweed is before the lib move. I guess glibc usually contains support for older versions. I have 2.30, it wants to update to 2.35. An update such as this seems plausible. But the filesystem update seems odd in that I would have expected many more things to need to be updated when the move happened. I know that there are links in place that should help. Still... I have snapper enabled. So maybe I can try and see what happens. But I'm not sure about this one. Any thoughts? -- Roger Oberholtzer

The future of OpenSUSE Leap (rant)

Hi, I'm the manager of a small IT firm with a focus on Linux and Open Source software. On my servers I'm running a mix of various RHEL clones like CentOS, Oracle Linux and Rocky Linux. On the desktop side, I've been using OpenSUSE Leap with KDE since version 15.0. Leap is powering all the desktop clients in our local school, and everybody (school staff, teachers, students) is very happy with it. I just finished polishing up my bone-headed post-install configuration script for Leap 15.4: https://gitlab.com/kikinovak/opensuse-lp154/-/blob/main/setup.sh And I just learned that SUSE will phase out Leap after the 15.5 release. So here's a few thoughts I want to share with the distribution maintainers. 1. Perennity anyone ? Duh ? 2. After the CentOS debacle in 2020, it looks like distribution maintainers love pissing off their userbase by pulling the rug from under their feet. Hint: we hate it. 3. Some official SUSE guy on Twitter who shall remain unnamed likes to explain on a regular basis that rolling releases are the future and folks who rely on releases are utterly clueless. As someone who tried to maintain a dozen production client desktops based on Arch Linux as far back as 2006 and failed miserably after a udev update broke everything, here's a thought from my professional experience. My Number One Fight Club rule: YOU DO NOT USE ROLLING RELEASES IN A PRODUCTION ENVIRONMENT. Yes, I shouted that out loud. 4. Yes, I have Tumbleweed running on a spare sandbox PC. Yes, it works nicely. No, I will never (ever) use it in production. 5. Stop reinventing the wheel please. Hi - I recently ported my x11vnc.service file from my OpenSuSE15.3 system to my new OpenSuSE15.4 system. It ran fine under 15.3 but now in the 15.4 system the x11vnc service fails to start. 15.4 Gimp - Howto Open .heic files? Installed heif plugin -- still won't work?

All, How do I open .heic files with gimp? The heif plugin is supposed to do it, but after installing, gimp doesn't recognize the format. All I really need to do is convert the damn things to .jpg, but openSUSE doesn't offer libheif-examples which contains heif-convert that does the job. I am using NetworkManager. When my laptop is opened after being suspended, it takes several minutes for the WiFi interface to come up. laptop battery charging stategy (Plasma)

I've heard and read many a time over recent years that the way batteries should be charged has changed. I've always been someone who lets devices run right down as low as I can before charging them back up to 100%. With one or two exceptions, this strategy still seems to work remarkably well for me, regardless of what others say. My previous Nokia phone would run for days under each charge, my current Android one goes five days or more between charges (I'm a light phone user), but conscious of this continual hounding from random people who may or may not be tech-inclined, and having both a laptop and a phone that offer flexi-charging options, I decided maybe I should change that strategy. So following a similar setting I just made on the Android phone, I set the Flexi-charging option in my Clevo laptop BIOS. It only allows adjustments in increments of 10%, so I set the lower Start point to 50% and the upper Stop point to 90%. Though I have a laptop, I almost always use it sat at my desk with it plugged in and hooked up to a bigger monitor and other peripherals. I like the versatility of taking my main PC with me on the odd occasion I go and stay with friends or family, but I don't frequent cafés with wifi because I'm not a hipster, and I'm terribly uncomfortable having the laptop on my lap or anywhere else. So for most of its life, it is plugged in being constantly topped up to 100%. Once or month or so I try to unplug it and use it on battery to let the battery drain and refill. When I do that, the laptop invariably throws a fit and suddenly warns about critical battery level even though it's still at about 45%, and switches off within a few seconds. Message from syslogd@linux at Jul 3 15:34:04 ... kernel:[ 87.166500][ C0] Dazed and confused, but trying to continue I don't think there's anything strange about my power-saving settings, it seems more likely the continual charging fools something in the subsystem as regards the actual charge level. Using flexi-charging is supposed to make battery reporting LESS accurate, but it's clearly already problematic. And usually, once I plug the laptop back in, the charge level shows back at 45%. So now having changed the BIOS setting, I see in Plasma (5.24) that the battery icon shows permanently in the system tray, because it's being constantly topped up... to 90%. I thought maybe what would happen is that it would decharge to 50% and then the charging would kick in and bring it back to 90%. I don't know if that would be better or worse, I can't see as hundreds of charge cycles will help, and in any case there's no options to set it to behave any differently, that would require additional software. Some of you must have a similar setup. What have your results been like with whatever charging strategy you use? I've had this laptop three years now and according to the Plasma Info Centre the battery health is at 94%, so it hasn't weathered badly. Should I abandon this experiment and disable the flexi-charging? The battery is replaceable anyway so if I really needed maximum battery life one day on this machine I could get another one. gumb

Anydesk not working on Tumbleweed

Hi, I'm currently experimenting extensively with Tumbleweed on a few VMs and a sandbox PC. So far, everything looks good, and I have a few details to work out. Anydesk works perfectly under Leap, but fails to install correctly under Tumbleweed, since it depends on some obscure legacy library which I don't happen to recall right now. So I decided to go for the Flatpak version. I configured the Flathub repository and installed com.anydesk.Anydesk. I restarted the PC (since it's my first use of a Flatpak app here), clicked on Anydesk in the main menu, clicked again on the Anydesk icon in the notification area, but unfortunately, the application doesn't seem to work. Has anyone had more luck with Anydesk under Tumbleweed ? Hello, since two days (may since last updates?) I have strange problems with my mouse: it doesn't move smoothly, it's as it makes little pauses and then jumps to a next position. Or, when I resize a window dragging a corner, focus suddenly jumps to the window below. I changed the battery of my logitech wireless mouse, no change. So I changed mouse and USB-receiver for another mouse/receiver of the same model - same problems. All worked perfect until yesterday or the day before. It is not all the time, it started after some hours uptime, using gimp and digikam at the same time. I logged out and in again, but no change now. There is not much processor nor memory use according to gkrellm. temperatures are low. It's an intel i9 with 64mb memory. Kernel Security Update - RETBLEED - Can we turn mitigation On/Off?

All, The kernel security update described on the announce-list listed the following, among other, problems addressed: The RETBLEED potential leak of info had been in the news the past week or so and a patch was anticipated. However, in discussing the fix, it can affect performance from 9 - 30%. Also discussed was it's "theoretical" use as an exploit to manipulate CPU branch prediction to glean information about kernel security details. - CVE-2022-29900, CVE-2022-29901: Fixed the RETBLEED attack, a new Spectre like Branch Target Buffer attack, that can leak arbitrary kernel information (bsc#1199657). My question here is depending on the impact to performance on any given setup, is there a kernel parameter we can pass at boot to turn it On/Off if the performance impact is severe? Custom default configuration for KDE : Taskbar vs. Kickoff

Hi, I'm currently experimenting with an OpenSUSE Tumbleweed VM. I'd like to slightly customize the default KDE configuration to eventually install it in our local school. So far so good. 2. Customize the Kickoff menu ----------------------------- Now I'm trying to do the same with the Kickoff menu, which sports a whole series of icons in the favorite apps section. The default Kickoff menu is defined in /usr/share/plasma/plasmoids/org.kde.plasma.kickoff/contents/config/main.xml. Where do I create a bugzilla feature request?

In order to allow a virtual machine guest exclusive access to a device (e.g. a GPU card), there is a long, involved process for configuring the system to exempt it from being connected to the kernel. I would like to create a feature request for something like a YaST module to do this, but what part of the system would it belong to? Two possibilities come to mind: YaST Boot Loader Which of these would be the right place to make the request? All, One annoying wrinkle with gtk apps in 15.4 is the default file-chooser does not sort directories first leaving an alphabetical sorting with directories and files jumbled together. There is a fix (regardless of the desktop you use), install dconf-editor and then set: org->gtk->settings->file-chooser sort-directories-first True Now things look normal in the gtk file-chooser. -- David C. Hi, I just noticed that the ibus panel applet isn't autostarting anymore - even though the're is a valid(?) desktop file in /etc/xdg/autostart. and of course - nothing obvious in the logs or the journal , and manually starting "ibus-autostart" from a commandline works without errors... Hello, I've jut been hit by an avidemux problem, may be worth a bugreport if not already fixed :-) however openSUSE Leap 15.3 seems to use the same 2.8.0 version as the appimage available on the avidemux side. The problem is pretty odd: the sound is shifted some seconds late. When the singer stop singing and drop the mic, one can still hear his voice. Of course not on the source (not an echo :-(). This seems to happen only on special situation. I'm cutting videos from a Canon HF G30 camcorder. Full HD, 28Mb/s 50fps. When loading, avidemux write it's own index file, then ask for something to fix (This video contains B-frames, but presentation time stamps (PTS) are either missing or monotonically increasing. Avidemux can try to reconstruct correct PTS by decoding the entire video. This may take a lot of time. Proceed?), I always say "yes", and have to wait around 3 mn (20 minutes video, 4Gb MTS file). no problem there. I select a part of the video (say a song, cut to i-frame), write it as raw copy mkv file, delete the part already done and go for the next. At a moment I have a song half on the present file and half on the next, so I append the next one, and so on. The shift may appear after several append It's not easy to see, cause my video is not a closeup. The resulting file is much too big to be shared, and the problem is not immediately visible, so I don't know what to do to help debugging (but right now I'm obliged to redo one day work :-() any clue? worth a bugzilla? thanks jdd -- http://dodin.org http://valeriedodin.com

Zypper vs. package caching : solution needed

Hi, Our local school has a painfully slow Internet connection, and there's no way to get a faster one. We have about two dozen desktop clients, and before starting the dist-upgrade from Leap 15.3 to Leap 15.4, I'm looking for a simple solution to avoid repeated downloads which would take ages. In the past I've fiddled with Apt-Cacher-NG, which sometimes works (sort of) for some repositories, but in daily practice it's unfortunately too buggy to be really usable. I've taken some notes about Apt-Cacher-NG and published them on my blog: https://blog.microlinux.fr/apt-cacher-ng-centos-7-opensuse/ Next, I went for a bone-headed solution consisting in sharing /var/cache/zypp/packages over NFS. On my local server (running Rocky Linux 8) I exported /srv/packages to the local network, and then all OpenSUSE clients are mounting this export on /var/cache/zypp/packages. Repositories are configured with the --keep-packages option, so the cache is not erased after each download/installation. Well, in theory. In practice, here's how it works (or not). All my desktop clients have a shared /var/cache/zypp/packages mounted over NFS. I perform my first upgrade on the first client, and things go smoothly. The cache is filled with almost 1 GB of downloaded RPMS and the corresponding metadata. So far so good. Now when I move on to the second desktop client, first thing I do is setup the official repos for Leap 15.4 before doing the upgrade with 'zypper addrepo --keep-packages etc.' And here's the thing: this operation WIPES THE CACHE. Which, as far as I can tell, is Zypper being particularly stupid. "Hey Zypper, please add these repositories but also please keep all the packages in the cache." "OK I'm setting up the repositories but I'm wiping the cache NOW. Duh." I spent some time reading and re-reading 'man zypper' but apparently there seem to be no more options to tell zypper to *never* *ever* wipe the cache in /var/cache/zypp/packages. Any suggestions ? Hi, My question is not really specific to OpenSUSE, but here goes. On the latest count, I'm managing about a hundred installations: root servers, local servers, desktop PCs and laptops. Some of these are in our local school, some for a handful of companies all over France and even some in Belgium and Switzerland. Root servers are mostly Scaleway rentals in France. And then the inevitable desktops managed for friends and families. Over the years I've been using various methods to keep track of all these installations, notably specificities like BIOS configuration details, exotic hardware, extra applications besides those I usually install, etc. In the beginning it was just a simple text file per machine, then I moved on to the CherryTree note-taking application, but I'm still not satisfied with the current solution. Usually computer estate management software like GLPI or OSTicket can be relatively complex. I prefer to stick to the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) principle. So I'm curious: what methods do you use to keep an overview over your installations ? In a nutshell, the sort of file or series of files where you can get all the relevant information about an installation in a quick glance ? hi, my scanner was gone today. I mean it's literally here besides me, but my Tumbleweed had forgotten about it. Maybe because I don't use it that frequently. I had to add the line "genesys" (no quotes!) in /etc/sane.d/dll, which was empty, then Yast could configure it. Without that, Yast would complain: failed to configure genesys. This seems like an old mistake popping up again. 15.4 Install/Remove java-11-openjdk-javadoc leaves dangling symlinks??

All, Is this a bug that needs reporting? On 15.4 I installed (zypper in) and removed (zypper rm) java-11-openjdk-javadoc. After removal dangling links were left at: # l /etc/alternatives/javadocdir lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 38 Jul 2 19:23 /etc/alternatives/javadocdir -> /usr/share/javadoc/java-11-openjdk/api and # l /usr/share/javadoc/java lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 28 Jul 2 19:23 /usr/share/javadoc/java -> /etc/alternatives/javadocdir Is it a bug? 15.4 - Thunderbird 90.10 - filters sorting mail into arbitrary folders

All, I just got a shock today with Thunderbird 91.10 on 15.4. First indication something was whacked was 1/2 the mail from the linux-kernel list was in junk. Then checking the linux-raid folder I found all the messages from Simon on the factory list there. Has anyone else seen filter oddness or corruption on the current Thunderbird? -- David C. sharp multifunction mx3060n printer

Hi, not a specific opensuse question, but i try to ask first here: anybody using a sharp mx3060n (network) printer? i bought one used machine, printing fine, with the ppd file from sharp. (throwing away my more than 20 year old qms-minolta desklaser(s) 6100 - anybody need spare-parts or color toner?) but what is a good way to use the scanner and maybe the fax functionality? as i understood, scanner is able to scan to a network drive or the internal harddisk, and the internal harddisk could somehow used as a network drive. maybe its also possible to fax something if copy to that drive. but i have not understand how to set it up (printerside) or if there is a better way, so that i could use xane to scan direct from opensuse. [oS-EN] New sound problem

Hi, I have a new sound problem. The machine is my previous desktop machine, maybe 10 year old, running a relatively new system with Leap 15.3, and XFCE desktop. I watch movies on it, and the headphones do not work. Sound taken from the line.out output of the sound card goes to the loud speakers, and they work. If I connect the headphones on the front, I hear a very low hiss on them; the loudspeakers go silent, but no actual sound on the headphones. I see on the "audio mixer" gadget that output changes from "line out (plugged in)" to "headphones (plugged in)", so they are detected. But if I take out the jack just slightly, I can get sound on both devices. The mixer tool says that I have just line out. So I get working headphones if I tune down the external volume control on the external speakers. This means that the hardware front jack is actually connected and works, but the software is not working, once it detects the headphones are connected and does something about it. Hallo, hat noch jemand Probleme mit dem Drucken von PDFs? Ich finde mehr und mehr PDFs von Webseiten, die nicht sauber unter Cups drucken lassen. Fehlermeldunge beziehen sich beispielsweise auf fehlende Color Profiles, Cups client zählt die Seiten hoch, kommt aber nie zum Abschluss, das PDF hängt in der Queue und blockiert auch folgende Druckaufträge. SIM/smart card reader

I've bought a generic USB-based SIM/smart card reader to see if I can read a SIM. It came without any useful instructions or software. I have no idea about the infrastructure of such software/hardware on linux. Hello everybody I have a 6 years old still powerful enough pc. I tried many times to install open suse leap 15.3 but failed. What happened is that the installation media send me to something like yast on terminal to choose media, an action always failing whatever i choose. I send you my hardware list. Synaptics Touchpad - Not Optimally Configured with xinput, xf86-input-synaptics needed

All, After the 15.4 update, my touchpad was slow and I couldn't program a 0.5 second disabling of the touchpad when a key was pressed resulting in problems typing and my palm contacting the touchpad. I have always used syndaemon to disable the touchpad while typing, but it was nowhere to be found. synclient also provides a number of features not available with xinput. Both syndaemon and synclient are in xf86-input-synaptics. Installed, and copied the 70-synaptics.conf to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and restarted X and presto, my touchpad is zinging away again and syndaemon disables the touchpad while typing (but not for control or control+key combos). If your touchpad is a synaptics device, installing xf86-input-synaptics provides a great deal more in configuration. pan parameters windows

All, Since my crappy ISP started blocking mail from opensuse to my suddenlinkmail.com account I have had to switch my account to gmail. The problem is I never see the mails I send, not my original post or my replies to the list. Anybody else using gmail know how to fix this? I also can't use the hyperkitty mail interface because my account still has the suddenlinkmail.com address as my e-mail and when I attempt login, it "sends a verification e-mail..." to my suddenlink address which of course bounces and I never get it. Hi, I'm running the Vagrant/libvirt combination on an OpenSUSE Leap 15.4 box. It's running nicely and performs way better than the Vagrant/VirtualBox setup I've used before. The end of pop3 on gmail?

Hello, I've searched on google for a solution but from what I've read, it seems like thunderbird will no longer be able to access gmail accounts using pop3. I received a notice from google, that after May 30 I will no longer be ale to retrieve mail using username/password. Oauth 2.0 apparently is only available for imap and not pop3 and 2sv with app passwords is not possible with thunderbird. Is there an alternative way to keep using thunderbird with pop3, so as to not have to leave mail on google's servers?

15.4 minicom can't connect to ttyACM0 as user -- only root (after connection setup as root)

All, Something has changed in 15.4 related to access serial devices over USB in 15.4 and I can't figure out what? Here is the setup. I have several microcontrollers I connect to my laptop over USB. (TI MSP432 and RM46). In 15.0 after saving the connection parameters as root, I could connect to the devices on ttyACM0 as my normal user. However in 15.4, minicom refuses to connect saying can't get a lock on ttyACM0. (if I run minicom as root, then it works just fine) This has other implications as well. I use TI Code Composer Studio as the IDE for the microcontroller code. It provides arm versions of gcc, clang and the TI compiler. It also needs to connect over ttyACM0 to update the XDS110 debug probe firmware and to flash new programs to the microcontroller's flash memory. This worked seamlessly as user in 15.0. It now cannot update the firmware or flash new programs to the microcontrollers (see error at end) I suspect this may be a group issue. In 15.0 there was the adm group GID 485, that I made myself a member of. (I'm not positive this is the group at issue, but...) The adm group is not present in 15.4. Is this the culprit? All other groups seem to be common between 15.0 and 15.4. If not the adm group -- what else could it be? I had no issues using ttyACM0 as my user in 15.0 and now in 15.4 it seems I lack some type of permission to use it. The error thrown by CCS is: CS_DAP_0: Error initializing emulator: (Error -260 @ 0x0) An attempt to connect to the XDS110 failed. The cause may be one or more of: no XDS110 is connected, invalid firmware update, invalid XDS110 serial number, or faulty USB cable. The firmware and serial number may be updated using the xdsdfu utility found in the .../ccs_base/common/uscif/xds110 directory of your installation. View the XDS110SupportReadMe.pdf file there for instructions. (Emulation package 9.7.0.00213) I'm connected to it in an xterm watching the output of a MPU9850 update at 100 HZ right now -- it's connected and working (this rules out a faulty USB cable as well). The firmware update is also fine. So it looks like the same permission issue with can't get a lock on ttyACM0 that minicom complains of. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

Tumbleweed with 5.18.1 : Problem with NVidia driver

Using NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-390.151.run for an older GTX 570 to create the NVidia modules worked up to now with Suse Tumbleweed. Updated today to 5.18.1-1-default #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC and this stopped working. No X11, no graphical system. :-( It seems to be a NVidia issue,see here for the problems on ARCH: https://github.com/NVIDIA/open-gpu-kernel-modules/issues/256 Is there some good description for going back to nouveau driver for Suse Tumbleweed? I have an openSuSE 15.3 x64 system which received a few updates and one of them - *patch:openSUSE-2022-124-1.noarch***has a dependencies problem that I don't know how to resolve. nothing provides 'libstdc++.so.6(GLIBCXX_3.4.29)(64bit)' needed by the to be installed libre2-9-20220401-bp153.5.12.1.x86_64 The version of libstdc++ installed on my system is 10.3.0+git1587 The actions Yast2 updater wants to take, to resolve this issue, is to delete a whole lot of important packages, or not install the patch, or to break a whole lot of packages. Amarok stops

Since installing 15.4, I've noticed Amarok frequently stops. With 15.3, it would play for hours without issue. Anyone else notice this? Looking that the title line right now, I don't see a next song listed. I do see the previous song, which it stopped after. I then had to click on play again. It's Amarok v 2.9.71

Hi, i have a new computer with ssd (nvme0n1) 1tb and 3tb hdd (hda) old system have had hda 1tb hdb 2tb both hdd's are bootable (hda tumbleweed graphic kde, hdb old tumbleweed only shell, for backup + problem sovling +..) both systems amd main processor amd graphics format of both disks is ext4 both computers are switched to old style bios (uefi switched off) systems use "hardware name" (free translation from german) in fstab (hda1... nvme0n1p1 ...) copied everything to the new system (using dd) now of course the new hda1 is 2tb and have a 1tb unused. because i did not like to have a second partition on it, i have to change to gpt. hdd boot ok ssd boot after changing initramfs, fstab grub commandline and maybe some other small things. now to my question (for ssd (to be more modern) and hdd (because of the 3tb)): 1) what would be the best way to change mbr to gpt -> maybe using gdisk? https://superuser.com/questions/1250895/converting-between-gpt-and-mbr-hard… https://www.rodsbooks.com/gdisk/mbr2gpt.html -> i do not understand clearly, will it then still be bootable / and 100% correct gpt or is this only a "it will work (with or even unusable for me without booting)" solution? 2) i found in /etc/default/grub_installdevice one line: generic_mbr i guess that this info has to be changed, what must be insert here instead of "generic_mbr" regards, simoN -- www.becherer.de

my upgrade goof

Just upped 15.3 to 15.4 but I think I made a mistake. Looking at the auto selected packages I thought 'let's upgrade almost everything' and ended up with a 1-hour run. Then to make things worse (and maybe because og my goof) the subsequent on-line update with yast took anothe hour. Later today I'm going to upgrade the Leap partition on my g73 laptop but think I should only upgrade the auto-selected packages. Would this upgrade everything that needs upgrading to become 15.4?

Tumbleweed: Can’t login, loops me back to login screen

Hello, After an update yesterday I found that I’m stuck at the login screen. After typing my password the screen goes black for a few seconds then I’m back at the login again. The same applies for root. I'm using latest Tumbleweed (20220613) with X11. Wayland doesn't help either. I can login using IceWM though. Any idea how I can solve this? All, I am totally bewildered at the behavior of setting basic file permissions and ownership on 15.4. I cannot change the group on files I own. (WTF?). I cannot set or unset setgid on directories on directories I own with octets (I can with the g+s syntax) Is this apparmor or some other security setting? It wasn't this way with 15.0. Take for example a directory I own and have full write capability to: 00:02 wizard:~/tmp> l -d ./ drwxr-xr-x 10 david david 4096 Jun 15 23:01 ./ Now let's create a new directory named "foo": $ md foo $ l -d ./foo/ drwxr-xr-x 2 david david 4096 Jun 16 00:03 ./foo/ So far so good. Over 30 years of computing and it's in Leap-15.3 that for a first time I see something done the right way: with a guitar fx-board output plugged into my soundcard's 1/4" Line-In jack I can actually HEAR it *even before logging-in* (pulse is used). Interestingly enough this feature is not there in bleeding-edge Tumbleweed :-))) QUESTION: Is it detactable if some instrument is actually plugged into the sound card? If it is then this is the way to go, I mean if I plug something in it's because I want to hear it and it should be default, no? Would be nice to see this in TW as well all the same, even if it's an unintended bug! -- Artificial Stupidity will never be competitive.

tcsh does not work

Today at 13:00 my other computer suddenly became dark in KDE under Leap 15.4, recently installed. Then I opened a console and found out that tcsh does not work any more. When I invoke one of them specifying "tcsh", i.e. tcsh-prompt> tcsh script.tcsh the script hangs and has to be dropped with CTRL C. The same for tcsh-prompt> sh script.sh and tcsh-prompt> bash script.bash. The only way to make the scripts work is invoking them in a bash session. Now bash-prompt> tcsh script.tcsh hangs again, but bash-prompt> sh script.sh and bash-prompt> bash script.bash work correctly, producing the output Hi, world But even in a bash session, it is not possible to invoke the scripts directly. Leap 15.4 Darktable doesn't start

Hi, Updated from Leap 15.3 to Leap 15.4 today. No problems so far, except(!) Darktable doesn't work anymore. I have been using Darktable 3.8 with Leap 15.3. After the upgrade there was Darktable 3.6, which is standard in leap 15.4. SAMBA open is very slow

I have a 15.3 system that uses SAMBA to share file systems between a couple systems. I have used that in 15.1 and it has worked very well. On 15.3 clients, I see that file open calls can be extremely slow, like taking a minute to complete. Later access is ok. It is the open that takes so long. Or so it appears. I have not changed the share or mount options from 15.1 when it was working okay. The systems were upgraded recently via zypper dup, so I expect that my original settings are the same. I see that it is the open call via strace on the programs that are accessing the files. They are doing a simple open() call. Nothing specific to SAMBA. Just a simple open. I'm not sure where to look. Google didn't provide much help. Maybe my search keys were bad. Anyone see this behavior on openSUSE? I'm running the default (I hope): 4.13.4+git -- Roger Oberholtzer

15.4 - When I switch drives, what is rewriting the grub menu? os-prober? How to turn it off? (remove it?)

All, One annoying quirk of 15.4 is it rewrites the grub boot menu when I change drives. I don't want it to do that. I just stuck the windows drive in, and it wiped out the 15.0 chainload and boot. How do I stop this from happening? Remove os-prober (if that is what is doing it?) Or does 15.4 use something else to rewrite the grub menu when disks change? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

I tried to install the Network Manager in the following way: Yast > System > Network Settings > Global Options > Network Setup Method > ( Wicked Service | Network Manager | Network Services Disabled ) After selecting "Network Manager" and clicking "ok", the following warning message appeared in a small pop-up window: Applet needed NetworkManager is controlled by desktop applet (KDE plasma widget and nm-applet for GNOME). Be sure it's running and if not, start it manually. How and where can I get the KDE plasma widget mentioned in the previous message and how do I install and start it? For years, I have been copying the full ISO to a USB stick for installation. I just realized I should now be using the NET install image, because my Internet speed is faster than USB 2! Until a couple of years ago, my download bandwidth was 75 Mb or less. It's now officially 500 Mb, but actually around 900 Mb. USB 2 tops out 480, assuming appropriate hardware.

Zypper DL hang

It often happens that some package download hangs at some % which forces the user into retry/abort/ignore. Sometimes the same file(s) will hang for a day or two, or weeks. Why do they make the list at all if they don't download proper? Retry seldom fixes the problem, aborting was not the purpose behind launching zypper, and ignore just skips the download. Then comes the misleading message "Installation has completed with error" which SHOULD be "Installation aborted due to incomplete download". Maybe the options should include "abort, skip, redo-depends and keep truckin'"? Right now it's these 2: @ 64%: libx264-161-32bit-0.161+git20200912.d198931a-2.34.x86_64.rpm @ 65%: transcode-1.1.7-11.46.x86_64.rpm

External hard drive failing?

I have a Verbatim external USB 3.0 hard drive. For the second time in a month, my laptop running Leap 15.3, fails to recognize when it's plugged in. The light on the drive lights up when it's plugged in, sothe drive recognizes the laptop. The laptop is a Lenovo T520. The ports are USB 2.0. Rebooting the laptop does not help. Shutting the laptop for an hour does help. Any of this sound familiar? Is USB port failing? Probably not, same thing happens regardless of which port the hard drive is plugged into. Hard drive failing or something in the kernel messing up? TIA, Jeffrey

Has anyone successfully setup ProtonVPN with openSUSE? If so, can they point me to an idiot's guide, please? Proton supply a desktop app for Fedora and other RPM based distributions, but not for openSUSE. My system is a fully up-to-date Leap 15.4. openvpn is installed. I've tried installing the CLI NetworkManager scripts (eg. ch-uk-01.protonvpn.com.udp) with the following settings Gateway: 185.159.157.12 Connection type: Password CA Certificate: ~/.local/share/networkmanagement/certificates/ch-uk-01.protonvpn.com.udp/ca.crt Username: my proton username copied from my Proton account settings Password: my proton password copied from my Proton account settings IPv4 Method: Automatic IPv6 Method: Automatic However, nothing happens when I click on Connect in NetworkManager. Connection refused

Yesterday I upgraded one of my computers to Leap 15.4. Everything works fine except for problems with the network. When I try to connect to it from outside by ssh, it answers: ssh: connect to host az port 22: Connection refused At first I thought it was a firewall problem. So, I stopped firewalld and changed the start mode to "manual" in yast. But that did not help. How can I allow connections from outside again? Thank you in advance, Wolfgang

localhost inaccessible to browsers

Having installed Leap 15.4 with KDE on one of my computers, I have a strange problem with browsing, being localhost inaccessible to Firefox (version 101.0) as well as to Chromium and Google Chrome (both version 102.0.5005.xxx). This is very boring for developing a web page. Replacing localhost by "az", the computer's name, or "192.168.2.17", its internal IP address, does not help; these specifications are likewise rejected. But "ping localhost", "ping az" and "ping 192.168.2.17" work fine. There is no problem with accessing any other internal or external address. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, Wolfgang

All, As part of https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1772023 I tested with Thunderbird 102 Beta. There are a number of changes between 91 and 102 (for the good, new address book format -- no more Mork!, etc.) that will make irreversible changes to your thunderbird profile. If you are considering "checking out" a new version of tbird, make a backup of your current profile before trying the new version (thunderbird wisely creates a new profile, but for testing CPU use, I needed to use the same account setup). The downside of the new profile creation is if you have a number of mail and calendar accounts to integrate, creating a new profile from scratch will be tedious and the sync of all mail headers, indexing, etc.. can be extensive if you have a large mail-store. So after backup, you can point thunderbird to your existing profile with the '-profile /path/to/your/profile' option and it will use and convert your existing profile to the new format. (but without a back, you will be unable to use the old version of thunderbird with that profile) The good new is High CPU use is gone in 102 beta... -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

After installing Leap 15.4, I updated Firefox to v101. It appears to be a lot faster and more responsive than the v95 I had been running with 15.3. BTW, why is v91 still provided with 15.4? Shouldn't something more current be offered?

Leap-15.4 vanilla kernel "make install" broken

I did an upgrade today using a DVD. I built and run vanilla kernels. All was going well until I did a "make install". What I got was this: harley:/usr/src/linux-5.15.46# make install arch/x86/Makefile:142: CONFIG_X86_X32 enabled but no binutils support sh ./arch/x86/boot/install.sh 5.15.46 \ arch/x86/boot/bzImage System.map "/boot" Cannot find LILO. harley:/usr/src/linux-5.15.46# On 15.3 the kernel install scripts call /sbin/installkernel from the dracut package. Hi, I reported a bug to bugzilla and noticed that my mail address is no longer valid. "Preferences" point to "Account Information" but wants too much information. Alternatively I could cancel my account and open a new one. But where? Peter

Final zypper dup done for 15.4 - Working Fantastic - It's a keeper.

All, Final zypper dup done, laptop, with proprietary nvidia drivers, working wonderfully. Hats off to the openSUSE devs. Fluxbox and KDE3 tweaked and configured to perfection. Wonderful dark themes for both, all 10,000 (guess) apps that are normally installed, plus gcc11 working fine. Fresh install to ext4, and I really have no complaints to report (we did have to pull the 15.3 desktop-data-openSUSE-15.0.20171024-lp153.1.53.noarch.rpm To restore menu categories that were stripped out by Gnome (okay, that's a complaint, but there is also a workaround, so nice tidy xdg menu categorization restored) Tbird CPU usage is also a complaint -- but openSUSE has nothing to due with that one, bug filed with Mozilla and confirmed it is fixed in Tbird 102 (so that's a wash too) That's small potatoes "complaints". Desktops in best shape I've ever seen (that's saying a lot considering I've use KDE since long before 3.5.10), Libreoffice, imagemagick, gimp, inkscape (it has made the gtk transition - finally), pdftk, pngquant, etc... all the "tools of creation" working fine. Mariadb and Postgresql up running no issue. Samba makes my $HOME files available on my phone, all is good. Here is to 15.4 going down in the records with 15.0, 42.3, 11.4, 11.0, 10.3, 9.0Pro, 8.0Pro, 7.0Pro (boxed sets) as being releases that are remembered fondly. -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

All, Probably old news to most who run their own mail servers, but for years I simply used self-signed certs for mail and used Let's Encrypt for my web servers. Turns out it's trivial to use the same certs for both. The key is you need to have both an A and MX record for your mail host and then add that fqdn (Expand) your Let's Encrypt certificate to include the mail host fqdn. While most mail clients would simply allow you to add an exception for your annual change for self-signed certs, leave it to apple to make things difficult and complain. So tired of fighting with IOS, it was time to simply use a legitimate cert. (makes apple instantly happy, not reboots to clear cache or 3 forced mail checks is rapid succession to have it add a new exception) If you are interested, here are three links that tie it altogether. Note that different web-servers will have difference setups/processes for requesting your original or expended cert. Leap vs Tumbleweed a few questions

I know I should have done the upgrade long ago but work has been crazy. I have one laptop still 15.2 which apparently needs to upgrade to 15.3 and then to 15.4 . I also have a neighbors old Gateway which is 64 bit which could go the 15.4 route directly or Tumbleweed. What I am wondering with all this complexity should I just switch to Tumbleweed rolling release and skip all the extra work. What is your experience with either??? I know kde3 is going away unless that one guy takes control of it but I find Trinity aka kde 3.5.12 is available for both the 15.x series and Tumbleweed. I just wish Evolution could be repaired to use mbox for the filters I have created. I do not need M$ exchange comparability. CWSIV

2 questions about Leap 15.4 release

Build 243.2 dated 28 May is now available on my closest mirror. Is this the actual Gold Master, and if so, are there any issues which would suggest against an early update to 15.4? Server loads are likely to be heavy next Wednesday, and I would like to avoid that if at all possible. Second question: I note there are no .torrent files for 15.4 (in fact, all such files have been removed for all 15.x releases). Are these gone forever? It's a shame if that is so, since torrent sharing is the fastest way to distribute the ISO files, and significantly reduces the load on the mirrors once everyone starts downloading them.

Recover/open/run/whatever Visual Basic?

I've just downloaded what I believe to be a game coded in Visual Basic. I'd like to recover the source of it, or at least be able to read it, and I'd like to be able to translate the associated data tables to something useful (it's an adventure style game called Quest), but I don't know how. It arrived as a zip file and when unzipped I see a bunch of files. [oS-EN] Resizing a window in XFCE

Hi, On some of my computers I have a problem: the thresold for picking an edge of the window to resize it (using XFCE) is so narrow that I have to keep moving the mouse for 20 seconds till I manage to get hold of it. Thunderbird (and now Firefox) intermittently causing high CPU load

I'm on Leap 15.3. Held off the update from Thunderbird 78esr to 91esr for quite a long time because I'd read of one or two issues and knew it might be best to wait a while. Now, let me state that I've been using Thunderbird since pre-1.0 days about twenty years ago. It's always been rock solid stable, sometimes a bit old and clunky but absolutely reliable, more so than just about any other software I use. I also understand that open source developers don't get enthused by criticism and they give their free time and energy and we should all do our best to show appreciation and be constructive in our conversations and hug trees. With that said, all current Thunderbird developers must die! Okay, I'll back off a bit. After twenty years of rock solid stability I upgraded to 91esr and have run into a catalogue of irritations, some of which I should have actually catalogued because I've now forgotten for a moment what they are, but I'm sure they'll come back to haunt me some more. In the v91 release notes I see lots of happy-clapping for spangly new features that are of no relevance to me. I just want the continued stability. Somebody already remarked on here some time ago that scrolling in the TB message preview pane is now horked. I either have to click or move the mouse about erratically in the pane to get it to scroll. Sometimes it scrolls immediately, other times not, and seems worse when there's images in the mail but no consistency or logic to it. Tried turning on hardware acceleration and for an hour or so thought that had cured it, only for the problem to return many times since. One or two other smaller annoyances I'll just have to put up with for the time being, but I'd like to know if anybody else has witnessed high CPU usage, specifically in Thunderbird 91esr on Leap 15.3? I wondered if it was continually reindexing my twenty years' archive of folders, and at first it seemed to do it fairly routinely once a day in early evening. But then it became more frequent, and now it spins up several times a day. This laptop has been ultra quiet for three years. 8 cores, 32gb of RAM, all of which I barely use. Bought it secondhand-like-new and it's way overspec'd for the mostly mundane tasks I require of it. Only very rarely does a CPU intensive task spin up the fan and make any noise noticeable, briefly. But now Thunderbird is doing this consistently. At this rate, it's going to wipe two years off the lifetime of this machine. I do NOT have the global search and indexer feature enabled. I tried deselecting and reselecting it as OFF just to make sure. If I look in Plasma's System Activity when the high load occurs, I see Thunderbird showing typically between 6 and 22% CPU load whilst most other processes are rarely pushing more than 1 or 2%. There may be subprocesses amongst the bazillion other kworker and whatever garbage things further down the list, but I can't pick out anything for sure. Nothing that nudges more than a percent or two. It's also not the Compact Folders process, because I still only do that manually after a prompt. It just prompted me for the first time in a long while (I have it set to only act with over ~200mb wasted space), and after that ran for a few seconds, my system just went into some kind of hyperdrive like never before witnessed, whilst Baloo reindexed for a few minutes and half the neighbourhood lost power to the centrale nucléaire whilst Mr Linux plays with his email client. And now Firefox has decided to join in the fun and games. Again, the standard latest ESR version for 15.3. Most particularly when I start playing anything in YouTube, but not uniquely that. System Activity usually shows a process 'RDD' consuming one core, and my fan starts going into warp speed again. Never happened before this last week or two. In both Thunderbird and Firefox I've turned off all studies, data collection, error reporting and whatnot to eliminate that. It could be that others have these symptoms but don't notice on their desktop fanless or soundproofed machines. What could be the cause? No I haven't yet filed any bug reports. I'm unsure if it could be openSUSE-specific, perhaps some other dependency like a graphics update that has nothing to do with Mozilla. Too many vague things to know where to even start. And no I haven't tried creating a blank profile because I can be almost certain nothing will go goofy in such an empty profile, and I don't want the inconvenience of setting up and receiving pop mail in a fresh instance and then having to merge it all back into my main mail at a later date. gumb

Why all the fear?

Hey Geekos, First of all, sorry for this cross-post, but it is relevant to all of the lists specified. I am just wondering if my experience is so much different, or if I use the distro differently than other users, that it seems so much stable for me. Often i see people recommending against "zypper dup", recommending "tumbleweed-cli" instead of "zypper dup", using "opi" for codecs install instead of 1-click install on opensuse-community, and so on, because the system "could" or "will for sure" break at some time. Why there is a need for all this fancy and new stuff and is it possible that these combinations and diversity increases possibility for issues? Given all of these, I should have had my home machines broken already a million times and burned to death. - I am using Tumbleweed - I have all these repositories enabled: [1] (yes, no priorities currently) - I have "zypper dup", "zypper inr", "zypper ve" in my daily cron job - I have enabled vendor changes in zypper conf - I have disabled multiversion.kernel in zypper conf (keeps kernel packages with their dependencies and/or DKMS clean and working) - I have disabled snapper as a whole - I have installed some VMWare software from their crappy .run packages, which means some parts are compiled from source During my over-15 years-long experience with *SUSE, i never experienced an unbootable system or a serious issue, except: - Nvidia driver issues before they were packaged for *SUSE and you had to use the .run installation ( ancient SaX2 times, before Xorg autoconfiguration ). On my gaming system i have just enabled nvidia repos and forgot about it. - Akonadi issues because of my experiments with bleeding edge mariadb in combination with my mailbox containing few million e-mails, also many years back - Btrfs issues (total system crash) when it was unstable and i had enabled snapper an ran out of space - which was resolved by reinstall and re-mounting my /home/ (i am not using snapper since then) So my question is - have the RPM dependencies gone weaker than they were "before" or something? Could that combination of all the emergency safe features, like btrfs snapshots in combination with multiversion kernel and/or packages, tumbleweed-cli, opi, etc...? Why are RPM deps not enough to keep the system solid anymore? My experience with *SUSE has always been rock-solid-stable and one of the very few things i do manually from time to time is firing up yast2 sw_single, removing unmaintained packages and checking change-logs of some packages i am interested/care of. Take this as a congrats and thanks for all the maintainers, developers and everyone taking care. And most importantly, the OBS, which does pretty neat job with automatic package dependencies and all that stuff. Alternatives to kwin?

Hi list, are there any real alternatives to kwin when using plasma/KDE? That piece of ***** really drives me away from plasma more and more. It has always been a PITA that, e.g. when running some SDL1 game in ful screen, it went shuffling ALL windows in ALL desktops wildly around and not restoring positions when resolution is changed back. Now it also starts RESIZING them. Got an idea what that means on a work machine with a 5k screen and 6 virtual desktops? Has anyone used openbox with KDE? Is it usable?

leap 15.3 - cups web-interface hanging up ?

I have just upgraded our printserver to Leap 15.3 and the cups web interface appears to hang up, often taking 20-30 seconds to load. Why No gcc-arm-none-eabi package for Leap?

All, Having installed to /opt on 15.0, I was hoping we might find a gcc-arm-none-eabi package for 15.4 given the increasing popularity (and dependence) on microcontrollers. There is a build service package available, but this seems like something openSUSE would want to package? Any thoughts on this? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

You know only Google, I like Yandex. I am not as smart as you ok so I stopped. I do care for Lenin and I respect others. I am not the best typer but I can try. Lenin will always be with Monoprice and others of the state and even Stasi. Don't need to pick on me when I use an OS but slam the libbies.

I have received a number of messages from various sources with a video attached, but across the face of what must be the first screen, is the message, "This video cannot be played." I'm curious--what kind of video is being sent that cannot be player, and why? --doug
