Hi, I am receiving this message when passing:journalctl -b -1 -r Hint: You are currently not seeing messages from other users and the system. Users in the 'systemd-journal' group can see all messages. Pass -q to turn off this notice. The issue is that I am in the "systemd-journal" group. Thinkcentre-M57p:/usr/bin> groups paul paul : paul audio cdrom systemd-journal Thinkcentre-M57p:/usr/bin> What is going on here? What am I doing wrong and not understanding about this "Hint" above? Ok, powercycling fixed the issue. Do you recommend adding admin user to "systemd-journal" group typically?

How to change Apache's DocumentRoot

Is there a way to change Apache's DocumentRoot? In /etc/apache2/default-server.conf there is this line: DocumentRoot "/srv/www/htdocs" I changed it to another directory and restarted Apache. systemctl restart apache2 But http://localhost shows this text: Access forbidden! You don't have permission to access the requested directory. There is either no index document or the directory is read-protected. But there IS an index document in the new directory and nothing is read-protected. What has to be done more than this?

KDE - Wayland - NVidia -> load

Just a heads up. After updating my Tumbleweed to day, KDE on Wayland is not longer possible. CPU load goes max and everything slows to crawl. Luckily I still had X-org installed so I was able to switch back. Problem with connecting KMail to dovecot server both in Tumbleweed

Suddenly, probably caused by a recent update, my KMail is unable to connect to the dovecot imap server on the same system. The server has a listening port on 127.0.0.1:143 and support STARTTLS. KMail is configured to connect to that port. On that system "telnet localhost 143" shows: Trying ::1... telnet: connect to address ::1: Connection refused Trying 127.0.0.1... Connected to localhost. Escape character is '^]'. * OK [CAPABILITY IMAP4rev1 SASL-IR LOGIN-REFERRALS ID ENABLE IDLE LITERAL+ STARTTLS AUTH=PLAIN] Dovecot ready. Using "openssl s_client -connect localhost:143 -quiet" I get: 40F756DECB7F0000:error:0A00010B:SSL routines:ssl3_get_record:wrong version number:ssl/record/ssl3_record.c:354: Using "openssl s_client -connect localhost:143 -starttls imap -quiet" I can enter "tag login <username> <password>" and I get: tag NO [AUTHENTICATIONFAILED] Authentication failed. TW won't let me mount by device-name

After "fdisk -l" to validate that my booting drive is in fact /dev/sda mount /dev/sda8 /0/sa08 because I want to work in partition 8 What I get in response is ========================================================== # mount /dev/sda7 /0/sa07 mount: /0/sa07: /dev/sda7 already mounted or mount point busy. dmesg(1) may have more information after failed mount system call. ========================================================== Why is TW not letting me mount by confirmed device-name? It seem to me that I once removed some package that fixed the issue but I don't remember what that package was, and now it's back to square one. Any other fix? I used disk-labels for a while too but got into trouble with those being used together with uuids :-(

Yikes! Looks like an update has screwed up my laptop

I am running OpenSuSE 15.5 with KDE/Plasma on my laptop and I, this morning, gave it permission to install the latest set of updates that I was told were waiting. It included a kernel update and as usual those want me to reboot after being installed. So I did and now I can no longer get my desktop up and running. The visual log, seen by using the Esc key during the system startup process, gives the following clues. During a regular (init 5) startup, I see two "start jobs" that seem to run forever - (1 of 2) A start job is running for User Login Management (xxmin xxs / ymin) (2 of 2) A start job is running for Hold until boot process finishes up (xxmin xxsec / no limit) Start job (1 of 2) keeps upping the ymin limit for about 15 to 20 minutes and then the following messages are logged - FAILED] Failed to start User Login Management. See 'systemctl status systemd-logind services' for details. [ OK ] Stopped User Login Management. Starting Load Kernel Module drm... [ OK ] Finished Load Kernel Module drm. Starting User Login Management... Starting Cleanup of Temporary Directories... [ OK ] Finished Cleanup of Temporary Directories. and then this cycle repeats forever. I next tried to start up OpenSuSE to init 3 and only the following error message was simply reported - FAILED to start Command Scheduler I am then allowed to login as root but I don't know what to do or how to proceed. While logged in, I do get repeating message interrupts telling me - kernel:[ nnn.nnnnnnn C0] BUG:workqueue lockup - pool cpus=14 node=0 flags=0x0 nice=0 stuck for xxxs! Strangeness in defining "protocols" in dovecot/pigeonhole/mamagesieve

Well, a strangeness to my view. Since this is an opensuse package and not the "lastest and greatest", not sure if I should post this here or "over there". It is a given that I may have, through some noobiness have bungled something early on that is causing this. I am prepared to accept the semi-public ritual shaming that may follow. All references to results mean per "dovecot -n". One can be assured that dovecot.conf was edited followed by "dovecot -n", then 20-managesieve.conf edited followed by "dovecot -n", for each "set". What happens is, it appears, that if one specifies or alters the "default" protocols in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf, any protocols subsequently defined, at least in /etc/dovecot/conf.d/20-managesieve.conf, are not honored. It does not seem to matter if it is specified as "protocols = sieve" or "protocols = $protocols sieve". Further, in /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf, if one comments out "protocols", one finds protocols is not listed at all, unless there is a protocol defined later such as "sieve" in 20-managesieve.conf. if one lists "protocols = " then "protocols = " is listed even if a protocol is defined later such as "sieve" in 20-managesieve.conf of one lists "protocols = $protocols", nothing is listed, unless if: "protocols = sieve" is defined in 20-managesieve.conf, "protocols = sieve" is listed "protocols = $protocols sieve" is defined in 20-managesieve.conf - then "protocols = imap pop3 lmtp sieve" is listed. Again, all as shown by "dovecot -n" after editing each file(s). I hope this is useful in determining if there is a problem, and helps lead to a solution if one is warranted. I'll send this also to the docecotlist as a distinct email.

Dovecot/Pigeonhole, Leap 15.5

Installed Dovecot23 package via YAST. Dovecot configured and working for some months now. Added Roundcube along the way. Attempting to configure Sieve/Manageseive, found Roundcube could not contact managesieve. Reason being the port, 4190, managesieve is configured to listen on, is not bound. Cannot telnet to it, on the local box, nor does it show via socklist or other port listing means. Does not appear to be a misconfiguration of dovecot. Anyone have such a thing working?

EFI bootable gpt disk made in Legacy-boot Tumbleweed?

Is this possible? I tried with the TW installer to make such a disk to be used on another computer but when I set "grub2-efi" for boot it was rejected because "the current system was Legacy boot" or words to that effect.

T470-w10+Tumbleweed/Slowroll

I got me a used Lenovo T470 with w10 preinstalled and using uefi or whatecver they call that fancy boot crap. In order to stay on the safe side of the alley I just installed Tumbleweed on a 1tb usb-ssd prepartitioned the same as the 1tb ssd of my desktop to eventually just host a copy of it. This way I can make a 'dd' copy of the entire laptop ssd for a backup of the entire on-board built-in hsithouse with windows included. I 'think' in case of a mishap I would just dd that file back to that or another same size ssd and be done with it. 3 questions - is the above a workable arrangement? - can I plug the linux ssd into the thunderbolt port and get better speed than with just a usb port (reason, I need all the usb ports)? - is there another and simple way of doing it all on an internal 1tb+ ssd with grub and not run the risk of windows screwing it all up? TIA

Disable IPv6?

While chasing other issues, noticed that listing ports in use (open) using socklist shows some services have tcp6 and udp6 listed. This puzzles me as IPv6 is disabled, not checked as enabled, in network config via YAST. I thought that disabled IPv6 entirely? Not so?

Tumbleweed new users:

I notice that a new user creation (YaST), automatically adds the new user to the users group. I created another user here about a month ago and this is not the case (groups username outputs username username, i.e. deb : deb). The su/sysadmin account I just noticed is also a member of the users group. YaST2 > User and Group Administration > Defaults for New Users > Default Group > /users/ , is stuck on anything but the desired here. Example creating a new user, Hyn the only group I wish Hyn to be in is Hyn and does not exist. Am I going to have to somehow use groupadd to add a group for user paul since there is no group paul existing? x11vnc/vncviewer guru wanted for help

Hi, I am not sure where to turn for help with x11vnc and (Tiger) vncviewer that I got from the OpenSuSE 15.4 and 15.5 repositories. Google search does not show any forums dedicated to x11vnc, so I thought I would take a stab at it here. If anyone knows of a better forum or a better place to find documentation that would help be with my issue, I would greatly appreciate links! What documentation I can find just sucks and is incomplete in describing HOW x11vnc actually works... I have been a happy camper using x11vnc and vncviewer for years now to bounce around between computers and desktops on my own SOHO network. (Not always easy to configure, but I have managed...) Recently I bought a new laptop with a high res screen 3456x2160 to add to my network mix, running OpenSuSE15.5. Most of the other computers are older (OpenSuSE15.4) and running using 1920x1080 screens. All systems are running the KDE with Plasma desktops. What I want to do is to be able to VNC from my laptop (client) to display :0 on my other systems, and get a full screen display of the desktop from my remote VNC server systems. I haven't been able to figure out how to do this successfully, God only knows how many hours I have spent trying! The closest I have come is to configuring the x11vnc server and vncviewer client as follows - Remote VNC server - /usr/bin/x11vnc -display :0 -auth /run/user/1000/xauth_DFOoYd -forever -loop -noxdamage -repeat -rfbauth /etc/vncpasswd -o /var/log/x11vnc.log -rfbport 5900 -noipv6 -shared -scale 3456x2160 -quiet; Local VNC client - vncviewer -geometry 3456x2160 -DesktopSize 3456x2160 remote.mydomain.com::5900 This gives me a brief glimpse of a full screen desktop, like I want, but vncviewer immediately crashes. Vncviewer reports the following error messages - Mon Jan 8 10:05:24 2024 CMsgReader: Rect too big: 3223x2102 at 0,65535 exceeds 3456x2160 CConn: Rect too big I feel like I am starting to get above my pay grade now, there is not a lot of helpful information about "Rect" or how to configure, encode, or work with them. It seems that only an x11vnc guru can really deal with this part of the VNC model. Is there anyone on this mail list who can tackle this problem for me and help shed some light on what is going on? Yes. Meanwhile I got me a new used Lenovo T470 and clean-installed TW on one of a 1gb Samsung e860 ssd partitions (identical to what I have in my desktop). I do have a backup image of the old TW made about a month ago so if my life depended on it I 'could' revert to that and do more trouble-shooting. Hi, I am curious. What is the currently preferred CD ripping software? Years ago I used "grip", a gnome tool. Then it died, and I asked here. I tried the suggestions, and I finally used "audex". Problem with audex is, it is kde 3. I also know about asunder, abcde. Even k3b can do it, I hear. asunder does not do MusicBrain searches, only cddb. k3b can not configure the ripping, but cddb search works. audex fails to find the tracks in cddb (actually gnudb.gnudb.org) Some other nice and modern GUI tool for ripping CDs? -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. Ssh Xforwarding works for app but not for help

I'm using Opensuse Leap 15.5 in a Proxmox lxc container to run the gnucash app. I can ssh into the container and, with Xforwarding, I can use the app remotely on my KDE desktop. Great. However, in the Help menu, if I click on either "Tutorial and Concepts Guide" or "Contents", those windows don't open on my KDE desktop but on the container console. Doesn't seem like an app problem but maybe some detail of forwarding or odd behaviour of yelp, the gnome help viewer. Any thoughts, please?

Hi, I have a small nuisance with the led on the caps lock key of this laptop: on wakeup from hibernation it is on, while typing produces lowercase letters. What I do is hit the key twice. Is there something I could do? Is this a bug to be reported, for instance? Could I run something to read the led and switch it off if it is on? maybe automatically on return from hibernation. Some YouTube videos don't play in Chrome after recent update

I updated my Leap 15.5 installation a few days ago. Trying to play https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RtmW2ek7WkQ gives this error message: "An error occurred. Please try again later." I played the same video yesterday and it played fine. Firefox plays fine. My repo list is below and messages for update. These messages are because I have some OpenSuSE packages that Packman has updates for. I prefer to use Chrome. Hi, I seem to have a 'this-is-only-for-build-envs'. Tumbleweed. I am unable to delete it as zypper cannot find it and neither can the repositories. Cannot do a zypper dup as it complains it needs an upgrade. I have a machine displaying the following after POST 'TrustedGrub32 No TPM found error'. Trying to get the output of ./bootinfoscript . but unable to find an openSUSE live rescue cd either 32 or 64 bit from here (as I have a 32 bit machine here also): https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Tumbleweed_installation#LiveCDs/Rescue_CD link does not allow for 32 bit KDE Live or 64 bit KDE Live rescue .iso downloads. If I use the 32 bit openSUSE Tumbleweed offline image (I got elsewhere) boots up but am a bit lost on how to proceed to getting bootinfoscript results from the machine. Where can I find the 32 bit KDE live rescue cd .iso? If not available where to locate the 64 bit KDE live rescue cd .iso? 1. To include in this message, what is best way to mount a separate usb with bootinfo script in a folder; if choose to proceed with the openSUSE offline image and work from a TTY (CLI)? Also how to copy the bootinfoscript results file (once executed) to the separate usb drive for further review? -Thanks

Thunderbird - news feeds updating sporadically

Leap 15.5, latest TB 115.6.0 Anybody else? Over twenty years been using Thunderbird with an ever-increasing number of blogs and news feeds. Never a problem until a couple of weeks ago. Now the feeds are updating unreliably. Some seem to update frequently as before, others sporadically, others not at all. No particular pattern I can spot. For example I have about twenty or more feeds for YouTube channels. Some update and others don't. If I right-click one showing as empty that I know normally has several new items each day, and click 'Get Messages' from the context menu, the new messages will instantly come through. There's also no configuration changes I've made that should have affected things. I've double checked the main config and the individual feed settings, tried toggling one or two settings back and forth in case the config was accidentally changed, but still the same inconsistency. They are not 'paused', and the network is always up. Tried restarting TB and rebooting. I'm pretty sure this didn't start after a version update either. I'd already been on 115.5.0 a while, and the recent update to 115.6.0 hasn't helped. Could there be some other dependency recently updated, like something that pulls things from the network, that has a bug, or do I have a corrupted feed database? If so, how to reset? gumb

openSUSE:slowroll:

Any more word on openSUSE slowroll? Everything seems easy enough as far as swapping the repositories out. My concern would be doing that on a fully patched Tumbleweed machine right now. I do have a backup solution tested and ready to be implemented if need be. Would it be better off to just start from scratch and implement slowroll repositories instead of on a current updated Tumbleweed? Would it cause problems with the nvidia G05 driver currently in use here? Thanks

OT- semi and demi - Old and Older hardware - iso DVD active partition not found

ASUS A7V733-c. Created DVD's from ISO images (Tumbleweed, a few days old) and get "active partition not found". Round and round . . . tried some older Knoppix, Mint, Windows rescue DVD's (R) and they boot fine. Thinking "These new DVD, Staples labled, are, umm, less than good", burned another on an older SONY blank. Same error. Seems no ISO images of recent vintage want to boot. Tried USB bootables, but the BIOS only knows USB FDD and USB ZIP, so, no boot either, just blinking cursor upper left corner.

The "Input Cursor" (I don't know what it is called) is being shown at a wrong location. Initially it is shown at a position that is quit a ways from the end of the line's title (the stuff before the '>' prompt. As I type in characters on a line the "Input Cursor" gets further an further out front at away from where characters are actually inserted in the line. I will try to show what is happening visually below where 'I' is the location of the "Input Cursor" - marc@wa7pxw:~/bin> I marc@wa7pxw:~/bin> a I marc@wa7pxw:~/bin> aaaaa I I hope this survives the text reformatting that is done after sending this to the group via email. All, I'm trying to bring up an RNDIS network interface for a milkV-duo (RaspberryPi Pico look-alike with 64M of RAM and risc processor). This is on 15.4 (yes, still there haven't had time to update). The device works fine on Win10 after installing the RNDIS driver and the network is created on 192.168.42.1. Hello, I have a script that does some imageMagick stuff in a for-loop and save the results in sub-directories. Normally it works perfect, but in a certain condition it produces a strange result I cannot explain. I start the script in my /home/daniel/digikam folder with ./scriptname.sh It cd's to the directory containing the files that should be transformed and the for-loop searches for all *.png files, like: cd to png-directory for bild in *.png do resize $bild, add text, save ${bild%.png}.jpg as JPEG-image in sub-directory ./4000 add color profile to ./4000/"${bild%.png}.jpg" done (The original script resizes to 2 sizes into 2 sub-directories, adds a color-profile and then converts to new color-profile to both versions, it is here: https://www.daniel-bauer.com/div/strange_script.txt) Now when I have NO png-files (but jpg-files) in the "png-directory", in my opinion the script should do just nothing, because there is nothing to process in the for-loop. But what happens is: All files that already have been in the sub-directories before are copied to a file with the name of the last file that already was in that sub-directory, plus a number. [to explain: there are already 3 files A.jpg, B.jpg, C.jpg in the sub-directory before I start the script. After the script executed I have there addditional: C-0.jpg, C-1.jpg, C-3.jpg ... ... C-32.jpg ... ... where those C-n-files are copies of A, B and C.jpg ] Where is my error? Why does the script do anything, when the condition for the for-loop isn't met (there are no *.png-files to process)? Thanks for your help! Trying to salvage/repurpose former VMware host, to see if a useful iSCSI target can be built on LEAP 15.5. Dr. Frankenstein has granted me license to use some of his techniques. Call me Igor. Creeping along, gathering bits from various Cyber crypts in the "Laboratory", I find the beastie will not boot from DVD or the Floppy, but willingly boots the former VMware drive. The HD's are all "SATA" type, the DVD is IDE and the Floppy is, well, floppy. Well, the cable is anyway. The boot priority is DVD first, FD second, HD third. Upon boot, it acts as if the DVD and FD are not installed. I tried another physical DVD, and cables for DVD and FD. Not a hint of activity on the drives, except during power on and POST. If I remove the HD's from the boot sequence, leaving only the DVD and FD, there is still no observable activity on the drives (seeking sounds, LED blinks, NADA) and the process halts with F1, no boot found, press a key. This used to work fine, I know, as I installed VMWARE via DVD, oh, so long ago. Gasp, I wax nostalgic. Which is quite different than waxing Brazilian. So I'm told TIA. In advance. joe a.

Hi *, for a few snapshots now the contents of "recent files" are missing from the plasma "applications menu", same for recent applications. There are a few folders and files in my home directory: /.local/share/recently-used.xbel ./.local/share/RecentDocuments but no entries from these fiolders/files are showing up in the menu. Can a bad connection in HDMI cable lock a computer? Machine runs Leap 15.5 at the moment. Video is old nvidia card. I had a hard lock after some hours or running, and then it was impossible to boot, it crashed (locked) at several places. After disconnect/reconnect hdmi cable both ends, it booted as is working. Hi, I have lots of files named like 07X55c_IMG_0155.png where 07X55c is a random text of varable lengths which I want to cut so that the file will be renamed to IMG_0155.png In my simple-mindedness I just opened mc, selected all the files and typed in the rename dialog replace *IMG* by IMG* The result though, as you for sure knew (but me only now) were files named like IMG07X55c_ - not what I expected :-( No need to say, but anyway: I have not the slightest idea of regular expressions and such sophisticated things, so that I kindly ask you for your help: how can I rename all files in a directory, cutting off the variable length part before "IMG" and keeping all the rest on the right side of IMG unchanged. Backup/restore question

Internet search is going nowhere on this: I have a backup of my home dir from OS 15.0 and am going to do a fresh install of 15.5, with the idea that I can restore the home backup. Not having done this before, what issues do you see me having? I have a crapload of stuff on this system that, although dated, is working. I would hate to break it. Obviously all the documents are no prob, ditto the pictures (I started to say images but that would conjure up a different "image"). The shared dir with VirtualBox is ok but I think that I would have to install the latest VB, which has its own problem with finding the product codes of the win systems there. I seem to remember looking in the registry for that info. Maybe things like browser history or bookmarks or saved passwords (not sure where they are stored, maybe not in /home) I am not sure what else is going to blindside me, which is the reason for the shout out. Hi all, I am exploring using a Google image database ( https://storage.googleapis.com/openimages/web/index.html) to train a local YOLO/Darknet neural network. As it contains 1.9 million images, I obviously need to be selective about the things I want to train for. So I was looking at the suggested FiftyOne application (https://docs.voxel51.com/index.html) Looks promising. Except I cannot run it. I get an error that mongod (which I guess is a MongoDB access daemon) cannot be found. I recognize the name. But I have not used it. I searched on OBS to see if it is available. All I see are some user packages that are all failing. This surprised me as I would have thought MongoDB was a big thing in the Python world. And SUSE do support Python. My questions are: Is anyone using MongoDB on openSUSE, especially Tumbleweed? If so, where did you find it? I looked at building MongoDB and saw this odd requirement ( https://github.com/mongodb/mongo/blob/master/docs/building.md) "About 13 GB of free disk space for the core binaries (mongod, mongos, and mongo) and about 600 GB for the install-all target." A typo? They meant MB instead of GB? BTW, it is specifically mongod that FiftyOne complains about. There is no populated database when building and installing it. So what on earth can require 600GB? As an aside, I was just introduced to the Python 3.11 feature that does not like one to mix using zypper and pip. I prefer zypper as it maintains things as part of my regular updating. And so that method is enabled by default. The complaint is about an 'externally-managed-environment'. To be honest it makes sense. I have always wondered how mixing zypper and pip would work. My solution was to make a Python virtual environment for this. And that uses pip because FiftyOne seems only available via pip. TIA for any pointers. -- Roger Oberholtzer

How can openSUSE udev rule for /dev/ttyACM0 impact communication with the device?

All, This is way in the weeds of a udev question -- something I know little about, but I've pulled my hair out trying to find out why when connected to openSUSE the device simply doesn't provide I/O responses from the Pico after high-activity on the Pico? Simply rebooting into windows, same Pico, same USB same everything -- all works. Unplug the Pico, carry 8-foot to Arch box, plug-in, everything works, reboot openSUSE, carry Pico back from Arch box, plug into same USB as before and no output after high-activity on the Pico on openSUSE. The card isn't locked, simply pressing Enter restores shell prompt, so it is just something happening on the USB port that is preventing *some* I/O from coming through. minicom, picocom, tip, doesn't matter. 9600 baud or 115200 baud, doesn't matter, there is just something about how /dev/ttyACM0 is configured or accessed on openSUSE that is causing the issue. stty settings are exactly the same between Arch and openSUSE. When hooked to the Arch box, access is from openSUSE via ssh using the same terminal. Peering through udevadm info output there are subtle difference in how the udev rule sets up the device which has me wondering if those small differences in setup is what is responsible for the behavior I see. I don't know enough about it to know so I need help. Extra NTP server address

I run my own NTP server, which can be reached with both IPv4 and IPv6. However, when I check with Wireshark, I see NTP requests going not only to my server, but also to an IPv4 address on the Internet. This happens with both my desktop system and ThinkPad, but they have different external addresses, in addition to my server. I use the host name for the server address in NTP Configuration. Any idea where that other address comes from?

how does file encrypt work?

For you maybe a strange question, but I don't understand... I want to encrypt a folder so that it can only be opened using a password. I use dolphin (in KDE) right click on a folder and chose actions->pack and encrypt folder ("Ordner packen und verschlüsseln) In the following dialog I deselect "encrypt for others" and select "encrypt with Password", enter the password, click ok. A "foldername.tar.pgp" is created. It is encrypted. Then I right-click that file, select actions->decrypt and the decrypted folder is created immediately without asking me the password. So what's the use of this encryption when it can be decrypted without the password??? How do I encrypt a folder so that it actually can only be decrypted using a password? Thanks for clarification! I know there is the original bitcoin wallet, but that cannot handle ETH. So I am looking for a free, if possible open-source, wallet that does not depend on some online company and that can handle both currencies (or, in the worst case, a wallet for ETH only, and handle bitcoin in its original wallet). Hello, After I did an update of my tumbleweed pc yesterday the pc refused to restart. I couldn't even go to console to execute the shutdown restart command. The only way was to hit the powerbuttom. openSuse 15.5 KDE & Virtualbox Windows 10 can't log in

I have a Windows 10 VM (previously Windows 7), which has run well in the past several versions of openSuse. However now, when I try to run it, it opens to the point where I have to hit enter to get the password box, but as soon as I do that, the screen briefly shows the login screen and then reverts back to where it was. Also, I don't see Virtual Box on the taskbar. Any ideas? tnx jk

Copy and Paste does not work while installing programs

Hello all! I have four machines here, all with openSUSE Leap 15.4. With three of them there are no particular problems, but with the one I am using now there is a consistent, reproducible error: When I am installing a number of programs, I normally copy my password when installing the first in the row. Then, it is easy to paste in the same password for each successive installation. However, with this machine that is impossible. I copy the password, but after I have exited the dialog box the copied password is erased from memory and I have to type the password each time when doing the subsequent installations. Further; as long as I have the dialog box open the password copied is kept in memory and can be pasted into a document I made to test this, but when I close the dialog box in order to go to Yast2 the password is evidently erased since it then cannot be pasted into the document. It is gone, but on my other machines it is kept in memory and can be pasted into the dialog box. See the attached screen shot; that is where it happens. What configuration error have I inadvertently made, since the password is not kept in memory on this one machine? Sincerely, Per Inge Oestmoen, Norway

mdraid scrubbing collides with iscsi

I have a new storage server running LIO as an iscsi target. Disk space is a RAID6 array, 12 x 2Tb drives under mdraid, managed under LVM. Since we moved to this config, a couple of months back, I have had issues roughly every Monday, continuing on to middle of the week. iscsi volumes are unmounted, or go read-only. It turns out to be the Sunday run of mdcheck "MD array scrubbing". It is supposedly limited to 6 hours, which is fine, but my client systems have died long before that. Every day an mdcheck_continue runs at 0105, to resume the scrubbing. Has anyone else experienced this and if so, what did you do? is there maybe a way of running the scrubbing "in the background", letting iscsi services take priority? Thanks to the David C.R. post about KDE help from a 'practical' time, and without wanting to dilute THAT article, I decided to test my luck betting on significant KDE seniority lurking here in the shadows. If anyone remembers the NAME of that once great little KDE utility, it would help someone else maybe interested in resurrecting it. I am back in the fold. With this laptop. I had installed Netrunner 21.01 on it about a year ago and everything just worked. Awesome, never had that happen before so I kept it. Fast forward to Saturday and I decided to install v.23 and get some newer software. Bad idea. It didn't pick up the wifi, which made it careen into the ditch. After trying several times to get it to work, I installed OS 15.5 and it just worked. Everything seems to be working so far except for the %$#@! system going into screensaver after a period of time ( 5 mins, I think). I have not been able to find the setting and it is about on my last nerve. Other than that, it is a full blown desktop running on this I7-8550 hardware with 256GB SSD and 16GB ram. So far, so good.

With fully updated OpenSuSE 15.5 I an having problems with my system shutting itself off suddenly in the middle of simple broswer tasks regardless of Rirefox, opera or Seamonkey or the program manager used MATE or TDE. It used to be just one site appearing to overwork the system now even gmail triggers the shut off. CWSIV

Leap 15.5 KDE - Shaky video

I did a fresh install of 15.5 on my computer a few days ago and since then I've noticed something strange with some YouTube videos. The people in the video sometimes appear to "shake". I have never seen anything like this before. This is on a Gigabyte H77M-DH3 motherboard, with built in video. Any ideas? BTW, didn't there used to be something in Yast that displayed hardware info? I was planning on using it to provide more info about my system.

Hi, My testing of KDE/Plasma/X11 has been terminated. I noticed some weird behaviour. Firefox not loading a page, then ctrl-alt-tab displaying a black rectangle, and finally, KDE stopped reacting to mouse and keyboard. The mouse moved, but I could do nothing with it. I had to ctrl-alt-backspace it. And this has happened twice. After some days with the same session, it dies. I can not work with this, so I'm back to XFCE. Samsung Flip5 no USB Tethering

I tried this on Tumbleweed, it may or may not be a Suse or`even a Linux issue. For USB tethering there is a switch to turn ON, once ON the comnputer is supposed to recognize it and net browsing may begin (the way I understand it no other action being required). I don't know if NetworkManager would show the usb cable or what? It shows nothing, and there is NO internet given to the computer (wifi hotspotting DOES work). However, when I next turn the USB Thethering switch OFF then I get a popup asking if I want to allow the phone to share data with the computer. Clicking yes opens a file manager & data transfer becomes possible. The first procedure is documented but doesn't work, the second one isn't but does. Any ideas?

Hi, on one of my Tumbleweed machines Firefox opens pdf files differently depending on pdf version: - PDF document, version 1.4 opens in ocular - PDF document, version 1.6 (zip deflate encoded) opens in gvim I didn't find any file, where gVim is associated with any pdf mime type. how to clear dolphin password after failed sftp login?

Good morning! I use dolphin to manage my files on my web-server and connect with sftp://... Then (only the first time after boot) a dialog appears to enter my password. Dolphin remembers the password until I reboot my machine and when ever I go to that sftp://user@url again I don't have to enter the password again. So far perfect. The problem occurs when I enter a wrong password. Then dolphin shows a red line "connection failed", but there is no way (...I found no way...) to make dolphin show me the password dialog again to enter the correct password. Even worse: it seems that dolphin tries several times with the wrong password, so many times, that my server blocks the ssh login for some hours. I tried to log out/log in here on the local machine, but dolphin still tries with that wrong password. It seems I'd have to shutdown and boot again so that dolphin forgets. How can I clear dolphins password memory so that it shows me the password dialog again, without rebooting? Can you help me? Hi *, for some time now Recent Files / Applications in the Application Menu are not updated any longer. The appropriate desktop files exist in ./.local/share/RecentDocuments, but Recent Files in the menu stays empty. Multiple open windows, click on task bar app. - Leap 15.5 KDE

Previously, when I had multiple windows of an app, such as Firefox open, there would be one item on the task bar for it and when I clicked on it, I would get a list of the open windows, so I could select one. Now, when I click on the task bar item, it cycles through the open windows, one at a time. Is there any way to restore this to the way it used to be? tnx jk

keyboard becomes extremely slow

Hi *, for some time now I have a problem with the keyboard on my notebook. It becomes extremely slow, i.e. only one or two keypresses are shown every 10 seconds. Special keyboard shortcuts like Alt-F4 or Ctrl-F5 are working as expected. Switching to a Linux console with Ctrl-Alt-[0-9] is still working, too. In the Linux console typing works without any problems then. Switching back to KDE again/still shows the problem. The only "solution" I found is to logout and login. For a while the keyboard then works as expected, until the same problem reoccurs. The intervals the problem shows up vary between once an evening to every 10 minutes. It happens in all programs one can type anything, i.e. OO Writer, graphical terminals or even dialog boxes of any kind. It happens with the internal notebook keyboard and also with an external USB keyboard. App to check out - broot (interface like MC - lite, but configurable and capable)

All, I stumbled upon broot, a MC type app for the shell (written in Rust) that I first dismissed, but then gave a try. The interface is clean and simple, many many commands, the ability to operate on search results (with, e.g. find..) as a directory itself, so you have full broot options/commands available for each file in the results. A handy file preview [ctrl + rt-arrow] (even graphics formats [very low res]). Hi, I have a curious problem with Firefox. I use several profiles with Firefox, for different purposes. For example, my default profile denies Amazon cookies, so I use a different profile for Amazon. Thus, Amazon can not track my normal activities. I even use another profile for doing Amazon searches, without login, so that I'm not pestered with emails later about the products I searched for, or what they think might interest me. Now, notice those two profiles: https://paste.opensuse.org/pastes/0ea7011d46dd Top is the Amazon Firefox window, bottom is the Amazon search. Do you notice the difference? The Amazon Search window doesn't have a tittle, and the buttons on the right for minimize, maximize, etc, are different. In fact, it has one less. And it has rounded corners. How come? I have no idea how to make this Firefox Window appear like the rest. This is in XFCE (Leap 15.5), but AFAIR, it also happened in KDE. Can't confirm at the moment. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Odd Leap 15.5 behavior after zypper up

Hi Folks, I performed a "zypper up" today, there's a new kernel bug. After zypper's successful completion I did a "shutdown -r now". After the reboot I logged in as myself to kde and as the various programs started to load the machine froze. This was a complete freeze where even the numlock keyboard key wouldn't toggle. I could log in as a different user though. Looking through /var/log/messages I found a block of hundreds of ^@ characters at the crash time. So I started to search around and found an old ~/.kde4 directory. I moved it to .kde4.save and that fixed the problem! No more freezes. This smells a bit like something funny in an old config file that caused a buffer overrun or something. Possibly a security threat? Think it's worth reporting? Regards, Lew

cups 2 printersetup for one printer

Hi, since years i use 2 (or more) printer setups in cups to use one printer. -> for different "standard" settings lets say its a color printer, but to save money often i like to print black and white. so i define a printer with the a ppd file and same printer adress twice, one with color settings one with settings black and white. so i have not to click and search all the printer settings to set up this 2 main settings. instead if i like to print color, i use the "color printer, or the foto-setting-printer or the black-and-white printer. since years i have used this with different printers "hp" and "qms" was working. since about a year i own a "sharp mx3060" i do not know if cups has changed anything or if its the printer. but it did not work any more. i have 2 stored ppd's inside etc/cups/ppd/... I am making an OEM installable image of Leap 15.5. One part is where you tell it what packages/patterns to install. Generally, this works fine. But I seem always to be missing a few things. One that drives me crazy is: Who defines the alias 'll' (ls -L) for bash? I see this for zfs (/etc/zshrc). But I do not see this for bash. At least it seems not to be defined anywhere in /etc. Anyone know which package contains this? -- Roger Oberholtzer

Hello SuSE universe - I am running OpenSuSE 15.4 x64 with the KDE/Plasma desktop - Operating System: openSUSE Leap 15.4 KDE Plasma Version: 5.24.4 KDE Frameworks Version: 5.90.0 Qt Version: 5.15.2 Kernel Version: 5.14.21-150400.24.88-default (64-bit) Graphics Platform: X11 Processors: 8 ×? Intel®? Core?? i7-6820HK CPU @ 2.70GHz Memory: 31.3 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor: llvmpipe The font size of the Emacs menus is way to small for this old man to read, so I thought to try and figure out how to increase it. Internet searching led me to believe that the font size for the Emacs editor is controlled by QT. When I attempt to launch the Qt5 configuration tool, I get the following error message - "The QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME environment variable is not set (required value: qt5ct)." Digging further into the realms of the internet, most suggestions I found, on how to solve this problem, was to edit the environment file /etc/environment and set the following - QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=qt5ct However, doing so leads to yet another problem, upon rebooting my laptop, somewhere in the process of setting up the KDE/Plasma desktop the system hangs and becomes completely unresponsive. I have to then reboot to init 3, and edit out this environment variable setting, and reboot again to init 5 to get my desktop back and working again. So, my question dear SuSEites, what do I do now to get the Qt5 configuration tool to work, or more importantly how to I increase the size of the menu fonts in Emacs? SuSE must have it's own way to set up the Qt5 tool and/or set the size of the Emacs toolbar/menu fonts. Can some kind guru shed so light on this dark hole? Thanks as always, in advance... Marc --

how to clear dolphin password after failed sftp login?

Hi, I use dolphin to manage my files on my web-server and connect with sftp://user@url Then (only the first time after boot) a dialog appears to enter my password. Dolphin remembers the password until I reboot my machine. So far perfect. The problem occurs when I enter a wrong password. Then dolphin shows a red line "connection failed", but there is no way (...I found no way...) to make dolphin show me the password dialog again to enter the correct password. Even worse: it seems that dolphin tries several times with the wrong password, so many times, that my server blocks the ssh login for some hours. I tried to log out/log in here on the local machine, but dolphin still tries with that wrong password. It seems I'd have to shutdown and boot again so that dolphin forgets. How can I clear dolphins password memory so that it shows me the password dialog again, without rebooting? Can you help me? Dell N5110 shutting off

With fully updated OpenSuSE 15.5 I an having problems with my system shutting itself off suddenly in the middle of simple broswer tasks regardless of Rirefox, opera or Seamonkey or the program manager used MATE or TDE. It used to be just one site appearing to overwork the system now even gmail triggers the shut off. CWSIV

Hi, I wonder if there are tools to help clean the display. I explain. I just want to wipe the display of my laptop with a wet towel (display cleaning liquid to remove stains and special towel). Problem: it is a touch screen, it reacts. I can of course power off the machine, but that takes time and is not convenient "now". iso download drops dead at 98%

I have at times a very slow connection these days, so a TW iso download ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/tumbleweed/iso/openSUSE-Tumbleweed-DVD-x86_64-Snapshot20231107-Media.iso I started yesterday evening with filezilla got as far as 98% by this morning. Then it just stopped, as if the file had been removed while still being asked for. How does this work? What's going on?

I decided to try in on top of my Leap system, just like that, to escape the need for all the tweaking. There was a lot of "chose one of the following" but in the end it coughed up a 9000 package proposal which I declided only because of my presently limping internet connection. My son is bringing me a TW iso, I might do an upgrade with that before trying again.

btrfs deduplication and rsync to other file system... Hello, I'm looking on btrfs deduplication system, because I have *data* (not system) in archives with many duplicates texts. The total is now around 1Tb large and growing and I would like to keep it on 1Tb disks (I have several copies). Often old text work or mail archives. I tried fdup or similar deduplication application, but then I got a scattered archive. I still have the data, but the files that are together are now on various folders. I had to stop doing so. If I understand well, btrfs deduplication works with links (the removed files are replaced by a symlink). duperemove: https://btrfs.readthedocs.io/en/latest/Deduplication.html this needs btrfs file system (or similar high end one, I will stay with btrfs) question: what happen if I rsync the data to and ext4 file system (on an other disk? Is deduplication lost or kept? same question is I sync this to the cloud. Why? because I wonder if my archives may be readable by an other (linux) system in the future, not every one support btrfs when ext4 is global. by the way, I don't find up to date documentation about btrfs backup (the wiki is flagged "obsolete"). If I correctly explained my problem, one may understand that I want to *archive data*. No incremental backup needed. I keep on total 4Tb of data (but the 3 more Tb data are photos, videos and iso files kept unique and already compressed, no chance to gain size). and in fine, obviously, if one have any better solution to what I try to do, I'll take it :-) thanks jdd -- https://artdagio.fr

But seriously . . . Back to the crux of my issue. Attempting to compile "dovecot-pigeonhole" fails, due to inability to find "dovecot-config". Yes, that is the file it is looking for. According to the compiler statement. This is not astonishing as that file does not exist on this system. Apparently that is because dovecot (2.3) was installed via YAST, thus, never compiled on this system. Apparently all the additional packaged installed in preparation for the compile party did not supply that file. Using the YAST search feature, in Software Management, that file name is not found. Therefore I am not persuaded to install additional packages hoping for oil to be poured on my head. The system has been updated to 15.5, and required packages installed without further fuss. Who might be inclined to assist in my quest?

Hi, As you know, I'm trying out switching to KDE, having being an XFCE user for many years. I have bumped into a major (for me) hurdle. Foxit reader doesn't work in Plasma-X11 After it loads the PDF, it stops reacting. It can not redraw, no reaction to menu keys or mouse. Doesn't work. I have version 2.4.5.0727 > -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 88672789 Jul 27 2022 FoxitReader.enu.setup.2.4.5.0727(rb70e8df).x64.run > -rw-r--r-- 1 cer users 73812318 Sep 15 17:52 FoxitReader.enu.setup.2.4.5.0727.x64.run.tar.gz And after starting it maybe six times, and trying under another user with XFCE, it works. Go figure. But not completely: I can not take snapshots (graphical photos). I can select all, and that does work (as photo). But draw a rectangle, doesn't work if Foxit is under KDE. It is ridiculous, but I don't see how to log out. In the application launcher, click at bottom left of the desktop, it says: Sleep, Hibernate, Restart, Shut down, Applications and Places. Ah, found it. There is a tiny arrow "<" at the right of the list, that I thought would hide the list, but pops up a tiny menu: "log out, lock, switch user". Hi, Trying KDE after at least a decade with XFCE. I use many virtual workspaces, or virtual desktops in KDE parlance. I have 6 in this laptop. In XFCE, you can move around using [Ctrl][Alt][Cursor-Key]. In KDE that doesn't work. There is [Ctrl][F1], [Ctrl][F2], etc. It works up to F4, but F5 and F6 don't work. Why, is this a bug? Something else? There is another method, which is moving the mouse to the edge and insisting, in my case 250mS (setup in "Screen Edges"). -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Hi, I'm trying out Plasma. I'm used to XFCE. There I have defined the compose key to be the left-win key. Press left-win, then 'oo' and I get the degree character. And many more combinations. In KDE, left win produces the global menu. I have gone to Settings, Keyboard, Advanced, [X] configure keyboard options. I go to "position of Compose key". Past 24 hours or so there is a marked increase in SASL login attempts to postfix with most originating from LATNIC and Brazil in particular (with the normal smattering of RIPE critters) Or am I just lucky today? -- David C. Can network manager change MTU?

I've been trying to experiment with jumbo frames. On my ThinkPad, with MTU set to Automatic, the MTU does not follow what the DHCP server provides. I have even tried manually setting the value, but that doesn't work either, even when set to something smaller, such as 1492. Is this an issue with the Network Manager? Or perhaps a hardware limitation? I can change MTU in Yast Network Setting on my desktop system. I'm running openSUSE 15.4 & KDE. tnx jk

PC hard crash regularly: need some help to pinpoint the problem

Hello, Since a week ot two I've severe problems with the stability of my desktop pc (Dell XPS 8940). For some reason the pc hard crash several times a day. Sometimes it take 4 hours before the system crashes but there are times (like today) the pc crashes 3 times within 2 hours. One crash occured when I wakened up he pc, the other two crashes happened when I opened a programm (Zotero, Firefox) Most of the time I had only Amarok,Libreoffice, Firefoxa and Zotero running. With hard crash I mean that the system completley stops. No keyboard action, I can't remotely access the pc. If at the time of the crash music was playing I hear an endeless loop of the last second or so. I need to press the powerbuttom to stop the pc. The logfiles doesn't say much. Now and them I see something about the GPU is fallen of the socket. NVRM: Xid (PCI:0000:02:00): 79, pid='<unknown>', name=<unknown>, GPU has fallen off the bus. The error code Xid 79 indicates that it can be a hardware problem but also a driver problem. It's a dual boot system windows 10 and Tumbleweed. Strange enough so far I haven't encounter the crash problem under W10. I suppose if it's a hardware problem I should happens under W10 too, isn't it? Any thought about this? Tumbleweed Doesn't Always Shut Down

Hi, I've had a problem with my desktop computer for some months, in that it doesn't always shut down completely with opensuse. That is, it's an intermittent problem. The computer is set up as a multiboot, and does always shut down when I shut down Windows. Here are the specs for opensuse and the computer. I'm running: opensuse Tumbleweed 20230819 KDE Plasma Version 5.27.7 KDE Frameworks Version 5.109.0 Qt Version 5.15.10 Kernel Version 6.4.11-1-default (64-bit) Graphics Platform X11 Hardware Processors 8 x Intel Core i7-7700 CPU @ 3.60GHz Memory 62.7 GiB of RAM Graphics Processor Nvidia GeForce GT 1030/PCIe/SSE2 Manufacturer Gigabyte Technology Co. It runs just fine under wine. I'm not quite sure but I believe when I save my work the program renames a previous version of the doc as whatever.bak and then save the current work under whatever.cdk Until recently dolphin displayed both whatever.cdk and whatever.bak. But now I noticed whatever.bak became invisible. It's marked as backup file. I wonder if this is a normal behaviour? Under Leap 15.4 and 15.5 this doesn't happen. Both files remains visible. Hello! Yesterday I installed and configured a new machine. This time I chose openSUSE 15.5, which may have been a not so wise choice. - Let us see. - Normally, the first thing I do before applying any update from the repositories is to configure the system so that the downloaded packages are kept, in /var/cache/zypp/packages. From there, I can copy and download them for future installations with no need for a connectivity. This is my normal procedure. However, after having configured the repositories the way I have always done, I got the message for each and everyone of them: "Repository X is managed by service 'Y' Your manual changes might be reset by the next service refresh!" Upon looking into /var/cache/zypp/packages it turned out that there was nothing there - the system had not kept my downloads. I have never asked a "service" to manage the repositories and reset my chosen changes! Why does this suddenly happen? What do I have to do in order to delete these infamous "services" once and for all so that they do not reset my changes - something I absolutely do not want. See the messages below. Sound under Tumbletweed

On Monday last week, I have installed Tumbletweed with KDE Plasma. In the first two days, the sound worked fine, but then it stopped working and a red diagonal stroke appeared across the speaker icon on the panel. When I click on it, a window pops up, entitled "Audio volume" and saying: "No output or input devices found", but not giving me any chance of specifying such a device. Since under Tumbletweed, Yast does not contain any possibility of sound configuration, I don't know what to do for making the two sound cards, or at least one of them, work. Any help is welcome. Xorg failure, I need help

I am running OpenSuSE Leap 15.4 x64 along with the x11vnc server version 0.9.16 and TigerVNC/vncviewer version 1.10.1 Until relatively recently I have been able to make VNC connections between my systems, but recently one system got sick and no longer allows a vnc session to be created. glibc version in Leap 15.1

Leap 15.5 uses glibc 2.31. I have a binary SDK from a LiDAR sensor supplier that seems to have been linked with glibc 2.34. So when I try to link with it on a Leap 15.5 system, I get: ./libscanifc-mt.so: /lib64/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.34' not found (required by ./libscanifc-mt.so) ./libscanifc-mt.so: /lib64/libc.so.6: version `GLIBC_2.32' not found (required by ./libscanifc-mt.so) I am trying to see if the supplier has a version of their SDK linked with an older glibc. I hope one that is not older (in their SDK versions) than the one I have for 2.34 (which they claim is built with gcc 11). That one works fine on Tumbleweed. So I caught this when trying to do a build of our software for a different target platform (Leap 15.5). While I wait for that info, I am exploring my options. I know that glibc is a fragile and key component, so mucking about with it is generally to be avoided. Having said that, is it possible to update glibc on Leap 15.5? If so, how obtrusive is that update? As it should provide the earlier glibc interfaces as well, maybe it is rather self-contained? Just the glibc needs to be updated? Leap 15.5 network not fully functional

I just installed Leap 15.5 on my home server computer. The install seemed to go ok and the system is up and running, sort of. online updates hang and then finally timeout. Yast package manager won't load. Firefox cannot navigate to opensuse.org but I am able to surf elsewhere and even play a Youtube video. On my Windows PC I am able to navigate to opensuse.org which is how I downloaded the installation media but for reason I don't understand the Leap 15.5 PC just doesn't like opensuse. Any idea why only opensuse is a problem with this PC? I have a bad feeling like that guy from from the movie "Airplane" that my timing is bad. I remember talk about possible demise of Leap but I don't know if that has anything to do with my problem. Damon Register

I know Suse is a big supporter of LibreOffice. As soon as I switched to Wayland LibreOffice menu item for "window" quit working properly. For several months now I have been struggling to use it with more than one document/spreadsheet open but it's quite annoying. Having separate windows that can be placed on different virtual desktops is nice but it would be nicer if the windowing menu worked. Does anyone from Suse on this list know if there is a plan to make windowing work properly on Wayland in the near future?? Thanks for any info.

Devs, all, With the CVE reports on fire about curl / libcurl, when should we be looking for updates? Even the maintainer is mum about the exact versions subject to the exploit for fear of identifying the broken component, so it must be pretty bad... Just checking. Hi, every once in a while I have boot issues with my dual boot laptop where Windows 11 and Tumbleweed are installed. Just today I booted Windows (which does not happen very often but sometimes I need to) and had to install a bunch of updates. Now I cannot boot to TW anymore. So something must have destroyed the boot. When I open the BIOS during boot I still have the entry opensuse-secureboot available but selecting it just brings me back to the same selection so apparently something is broken there. No sound output through HDMI

I have laptop running Leap 15.5, which I occasionally connect to my Samsung smart TV and Samsung Soundbar. The video works fine, with the desktop being mirrored on the TV screen. But sound only comes out of the laptop speakers. The TV has its own speakers, or it can use the Soundbar. Likewise, the laptop can link directly to the soundbar via bluetooth. But whichever combination I try, I cannot get sound out of either the TV speakers or the Soundbar. It has worked OK in the past, so I know it is possible. My impression is that the problem is in some configuration within the laptop which should redirect sound from the internal speakers to the HDMI output. Any suggestions, please? Hi List, I just DUPed my Tumbleweed to 20231001, which obvioiusly force-switched me from mlocate to plocate. Recommended docker tutorial for working with large web packages?

All, Does anyone have a favorite link that explains the "midlevel" management of large web projects with docker. I have searched and read, but I seem to be just getting disjointed bits of basic how to or being stuck in the full docker.com reference. I have the basics, I can pull, attach, detach, exec, restart, manage IDs, for normal single apps, etc..., but I'm flummoxed trying to sort out and get eGroupware configured and running in docker with docker-compose and the 10 other apps it pulls in, collabra, rocketchat, swoolepush, etc... docker compose pulls everything and sets it up and running, but all I can get back from nginx over :8080 is "I'm working, but the page has permanently moved..." Nothing on the other exported port of :4443. So far I've ended up with 5 source trees of eGroupware in /var/lib/docker/... in 4 volumes and 1 overlay for the various configs I've tried with intervening 'docker compose up' and 'docker compose down'. Worth a chance to ask if someone has a favorite link or howto that discusses docker at that level that not on page 227 of the full manual. (yes, I would use the opensuse package, but the server I'm working with is running Arch, and all the egroupware folks cater to in their howto's is Ubuntu -- though why it matters for a container is odd, but it does, and unfortunately the traditional egroupware web-install is no longer actively supported - while it still works it quite flaky due to push-notifications replacing normal Ajax or js page update and the push implemented only works within the container.) Leap 15.5 and busybox gzip

I have a strange situation on Leap 15.5 I am trying to install a number of packages (rpmbuild, yast2-installation) and have a problem with gzip. Or more accurately how is seems to be installed. I have installed kmod, which in turn installs suse-module-tools. So far ok. The problem is that kmod/suse-module-tools seems to want to install busybox-gzip instead of the standard gzip package. All, I finally took the plunge and installed pipewire on 15.4. Works just fine. Just install per https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Pipewire and you don't have to enable the systemd unit -- it will be done. Anyway, one strange side-effect is that on boot/login (like after today's kernel update), the volume is always set at 92%. Way too loud. I always set the volume to 57% or 62% which is about right on this laptop. What tool or what config file do I use to tell pipewire to either set the volume at 62% or just not touch the volume setting altogether? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.

All, Just a good example of why SUSE/openSUSE is as good as it is. I built pgloader naively on Arch and the package was 23MiB. Digging into the spec, the SUSE packager had noticed that the SBCL elf files contained gaps and no debug sections and so an objcopy of the executable would reduce the size by over 20M!!! Absolutely brilliant, and quite space efficient. Hi, I am trying to collect some data about the use of security measures used in an email server in your home or with a provider where you do your own configuration. Apart from doing malware checking on incoming messages, there are more measures you can take to protect the email with your own email server. The first measure is SPF checking, which means that you check that an incoming email really comes from the server it should come from. The owner of that server entered a so-called SPF TXT record in the DNS to indicate which server(s) are allowed to send messages with that domain name in the From address. You can do the same by having such a TXT record in the DNS with your domain. Obviously you rely on others to check this SPF TXT record. There might come some time that email that cannot be checked this way will be refused or at least goes into the spam folder. A second measure is DKIM checking and signing. When you inspect message from gmail.com you will see that these messages contain a DKIM signatures. The measure you take is that you check if the incoming signed message is really coming with a proper signature and is not tampered with (the content, including headers, is signed). But you can do the same. You can sign outgoing message with your DKIM signature. This means that you sign your messages with your private key and the public key is in the DNS of your domain. Signing messages this way makes it more likely that your messages are accepted. I did receive returned messages because they did not have a DKIM signature or could not be checked using SPF. The third measure is DMARC. This also twofold, checking and providing a DMARC TXT record in the DNS of your domain. A DMARC record indicates what receiving servers should do with SPF and DKIM checks. So you have some control over what will be done when checks fail or partly fail (when the From-address contains a subdomain of your domain). LEAP AArch64 ISO images won't boot on Apple Silicon running VMWare Fusion

I've just downloaded the full LEAP ISO as well as the network ISO and neither of them will boot on a Mac Studio running VMWare Fusion Pro. The error message says that x86_64 is required. I have no idea why this is happening as I have just installed Fedora 38 (AArch64) in exactly the same way and everything was fine. Any ideas what might be happening?

Hi, since I upgraded on OS 15.5 pulseaudio equalizer has a different user interface, and unfortunately has no effect anymore. I can change all sliders, click the on/off button... no matter what I do, it has absolutely no effect. What could be the reason? Or is there another equalizer that works? (I often listen to a radio station that obviously has a bass fetish that makes my loudspeakers vibrate on the table, and since years I used pulseaudio equalizer up to OS 15.3 to normalize that radio sound...) All, One distinct downside to moving to keepassxc is there is no mobile app for it. For the old keepassx version, there were a number of free apps that would do the same thing. On the keepassxc site they recommend strongbox or keepassium for IOS as substitutes -- but there is a rub -- the free versions are not full-featured. All, Github is forcing 2FA (two factor authentication) beginning Oct 12 for accounts that make contributions to other repositories or otherwise contribute. Why a goofy algorithm from my computer is better than my 2048 byte RSA key doesn't make much sense. (though likely a way to dupe users into providing a mobile phone number that can be monetized) If you find yourself having to come up with 2FA codes, then there are a few apps that do it without involving your phone. Commandline: The "oath-toolkit" package provides the oathtool command line utility to generate the timed one time passwords given the secret key you are assigned from the site: $ oathtool --totp --base32 KEY (the options needed depend on the key format) where KEY is the secret key you were given. If you have a number of sites, you can create a short script to read the key from a file which is fairly convenient. With a little thought you can have the function accept a filename or key. GUI App: keepassxc has a totp function and allows assigning the secret key to each entry in your password database. (rather odd interface done though the context menu - Right-click -> TOTP -> Set up TOTP, add your key, then you can open a window to see the timed one time password to use) After you configure it, you can just double-click the little timer icon next to the entry to copy to the clipboard (nice touch, somebody had their thinking cap on...) Phone: It kills me, but the google-authenticator is about a well recommended as anything else. You can use it without a google-account. Just add your key and it spits out the timed one time password. Hi, new laptop here, and I decided to install Leap 15.4 with full disk encryption, no LVM (a feature I wanted to have for years, so I'm happy). It asks for the password twice (contrary to my customs, I'm using plymouth). It asks once before grub loads. Well, ok, there is no separate /boot, so it has to read "/" which is encrypted. Nice. But after selecting the boot entry in grub, it asks again. Once, despite being 3 partitions ("/", "/boot" and swap). Ok. Is there some way to make it ask only once? bluetooth audio only connects after several tries

Hi there, am I the only one with problems getting bluetooth to work in a 1:1 setup? My Ryzen 7 machine should always autoconnect on boot to its dedicated stereo. Both turn on at the same time, no other machine connects to the BT reciever I am running Tumbleweed with KDE, plasma and pulseaudio 16.1 on a kernel 6.4.11-1-default, the CPU is an AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 5850U Here's a script that I have to run - sometimes several times, and often I still have to power on bluetooth and connect to the stereo manually, in the KDE widget (strangely, bluetoothctl won't do the trick, most of the times). Once connected, Bluetooth works as desired, until the next reboot. I am still digging in the logfiles, but maybe these commands here are helpful for someone... Feel free to PM me if you have similar problems and / or send me links, any help is much appreciated. Hi, I get a bunch of commercial email that pollutes one of my inboxes, as does everybody. I found a new trick: Create a filter that matches on the From address and "age > 3 days", with an action that can be delete, but I simply move to a folder in the same imap server, so that the mail is still accessible in any of my computers. Hi, because here is some diskussion about thunderbird, i have also a thunderbird question: since about end of last year tumbleweed update, i notice, if i move an attachment from one mail to another SOMETIMES i see for a short time on my desktop something like: qegbhjj.html.part. on my machine it's automatically removed. on another machine, i did not personally use, from thunderbird, or maybe from firefox after a day of work one or two of this files are still on the desktop. so my question is, did anybody know why this happens and where i could switch the behavior to do the temporary file not on desktop, better place would be tmp file directory? simoN -- www.becherer.de

Hi, I upgraded successfully from 15.3 (via 15.4) to 15.5 - thanks for the input in the other thread! It went easy and it seems it worked :-) There is a little problem with seamonkey. On a radio page it crashes with /usr/bin/seamonkey: Zeile 140: 18389 Speicherzugriffsfehler (Speicherabzug geschrieben) $MOZ_PROGRAM "$@" Other pages seem to work. It is the page https://www.srf.ch/audio/radio-srf-3-live-hoeren that causes this crash. This page works in firefox, and it worked before in seamonkey on OS 15.3. NAS with a USB interface?

Hi Folks, I've got an odd requirement that would be satisfied if I could find a NAS device that supported TCP/IP connections over a regular Ethernet port while also offering a USB connection to make the NAS appear as a USB external disk. So multiple computers on the Ethernet side would load up files on the NAS which would be available to a USB-connected computer where it could pull the files off. I've googled a bit and it seems that many people think this won't work, but I'm looking at a QNAP NAS that looks like it might. https://files.qnap.com/news/pressresource/datasheet/TS-x51A_P8_(EN)_51000-0… Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I set in Yast-Software-Repositories "Switch system packages to the versions in this repository (Packman Repository)" Once the ritual is complete the link changes to "Cancel switching..." Fine, but a few upgrades later the constraint is GONE and the first annunciation is back again. This certainly isn't what one would expect, as opposed to an alert to anything that wants to change the constraint or better yet an automatic and total denial of same (consistent with user intent!).

Very annoying when I delete a mail in thunderbird, for example, but also in taskbar when I want to open an application in an other desktop it opens then close immediately. All, With the goofball 2FA the evil-empire is imposing on github, I have to actually commit to using keepassxc instead of my old favorite. In keepassxc, there is both browser and ssh_agent integration. Browser integration is easy enough to understand, keepassxc is simply used as the backend for password storage and the browser stores and retrieves passwords from an unlocked keepassxc instance. But what does ssh_agent integration do that ssh_agent doesn't already do? That's where I'm confused. ssh_agent is happily running and doing its job on Leap -- what does enabling integration in keepassxc buy you? https://keepassxc.org/docs/KeePassXC_UserGuide#_setting_up_ssh_agent_integr… doesn't really explain any benefit you gain other than having the key names in keepassxc.... Why are packman package names not consistent?

All, Doing maintenance on the Leap 154 --keep files from packman, duplicate removal is almost impossible as the file naming convention for packman rpms is all over the place. For example, in the past year I have filenames of: pdftk-3.3.2-pm154.10.4.noarch.rpm pdftk-3.3.3-150400.10.pm.6.noarch.rpm pdftk-3.3.3-pm150400.10.4.noarch.rpm pdftk-3.3.3-pm154.10.2.noarch.rpm Where pdftk-3.3.3-150400.10.pm.6.noarch.rpm is the current. However, trying to either sort, or iterate in awk is impossible with some filenames containing "pm154" some just containing "150400" and still others containing "pm150400". That before we get to some with ".pm." and others not. How do you handle parsing duplicates from filenames such as this? also Will the ".. 150400.10.pm.X .." filenames be consistent going forward? -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
