No Login, no Graphics after update to Tumbleweed 20230211-0

Hello, after the update the screen only shows a '-'. All the usual other tty screens that you get with e.g. STRG-ALT-F1 are also gone. I can connect to the PC via ssh from my Ubuntu Laptop and check what is going on. I am using an old GTX 570 on that PC. Previously when the G06 stuff was installed instead of updating the needed G04 stuff, I was able to install NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-390.157.run manually and the login and XFCE worked. But now even that fails. :-( Any pointers? Is that the beginning of the things that are named in Subject "Nvidia 390x driver users - glibc 2.37 will bring bad news" ? RFC 6724

I was reading about proposed changes to RFC 6724 which determines the priority for IP address selection. In the original RFC 6724, IPv4 addresses are given preference to IPv6 Unique Local Addresses (ULA). The proposed changes would reverse that. However, in testing with ping, I see ULA is preferred, except for the computer being used for testing from. That is when a computer is pinging itself. Why the difference? Why is the proposed priority used when pinging a different device, but not the same device? Also, if I use the FQDN, instead of just the host name, then ULA is used. WTF??? I'm using the DNS resolver in pfSense. [opensuse] boot32.efi for 64 bits processor and Leap

Hello, We see more and more often very small but powerfull computers, atom multicore 64 bits, but with UEFI 32 bits firmware. I have one now ("It Works TW891" paid 129€ - 32Gb ssd + 2Gb ram, runs almost perfectly windows 10 32bits or Debian 64bits). these computers can be installed with 64 bits distros, but they need absolutely a 32 bits loader. Right now I on ly know of the hybrid debian 32/64bits dvd to be able to install. Notice that *only the loader* have to be 32bits, the generic name being boot32.efi copying a generic loader to the Leap EFI folder allows booting, and probably installing (I couldn't make all the tests), but the generic one gives only a grub prompt, not handy. Hi, I have six virtual bridges in xen host machine and following virtual machine configuration file section defining the vifs: vif = [ 'bridge=br10', 'bridge=br20', 'bridge=br30', 'bridge=br40', 'bridge=br50', 'bridge=br60' ] This means that in the guest(openSUSE Leap 42.1) I have six vNICs(eth0 - eth5). Can I be sure that eth0 is always connected to br10, eth1 to br20, etc? Or should I specify a MAC address for each vNIC created like this: vif = [ 'bridge=br10, mac=00:14:5E:11:C6:F1', 'bridge=br20, mac=00:14:5E:11:C6:F2', 'bridge=br30, mac=00:14:5E:11:C6:F3', 'bridge=br40, mac=00:14:5E:11:C6:F4', 'bridge=br50, mac=00:14:5E:11:C6:F5', 'bridge=br60, mac=00:14:5E:11:C6:F6' ] .. and then configure udev rules which make sure that interface associated with MAC 00:14:5E:11:C6:F1 and br10 is always named eth0, interface associated with MAC 00:14:5E:11:C6:F2 and br20 is always named eth1, etc? Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. kde5/6: recent files/recent applications

Hi *, the problem already existed in kde5, but continued in kde6: The menues for "recent files" and "recent applications" stay empty in the start menu, in dolphin and other apps. In .local/share/RecentDocuments/ all the desktop icons for recent files are still existing. The list is updated whenever I open a new document, but nevertheless the "recent files" menu remains empty. As for "recent applications" I can't even find a folder, where they would be stored. I found a few, mostly very old postings on the net, but no fitting answer. Anyone any idea? TIA. Bye. Michael.

Mozilla's GUI (non)conformity

I use Plasma & XFCE depending on the booted distro and most non-KDE apps konform at least to some extent with the KDE desktop when KDE is used examples being Pan, Sylpheed, gftp and even nedit. The ONE set that is almost always problematic is anything Mozilla, Firefox in this particular case. I cannot change the title bar from black which just makes it impossible to distinguish from darker wallpapers, there being no way to select something with a contrasting window border either. How can I fix this?

[opensuse] Project management software question for project managers

I am looking for project management software I can install on my Suse box. Alas, there are quite a number of prducts that claim to be suitable project management products, but I am hoping to obtain a little help separating the wheat from the chaffe. Basically, when I open the project management software, I want to be able to choose from among a number of projects that are under way, and then see the relation between a client's wish list and the functional requirements specs, and then how these specs relate to the UML diagrams that have been created, and from there, what tasks have been defined for each requirement and the identity of all persons involved, the developers and their managers, and the person who designed the code that supports the requirement. And with that, I want to be able to see the project's timeline, the related bugs, &c. I would even want to be able to open the source code files and examine the code that was actually written. Here is my wish list: 1) a web application that stores data in either PostgreSQL or MySQL. 2) easy integration with UML tool (or has it's own UML tool that supports round trip engineering) 3) resource management (e.g. computers, and development tools, that can be used, personelle assigned to each task) 4) documentation of relation between functional requirements specs to specific tasks and specific unit and integration tests. 5) time/effort tracking 6) bug tracking, including data relating the existance of the bug, and effort required to fix it, to the person who wrote the original code, the person who supervised him or her, and the person who designed the 'feature' in question, the time taken to complete the original task, and the technologies used (to imprrove accountability as well as to determine retraining and continuing education needs (people aren't disposable, so instead of taking a harsh aproach to problems identified, I prefer to use education as a corrective, but I can't design corrective instruction without knowing precisely what the need is). I also need to know if a developer has a higher than normal bug rate simply because he doesn't take enough time to ensure the job is done right, or because I haven't adequately trained him, or because of a poor choice of tools, or somethng else that may be my fault. 7) use of task effort tracking history to generate provisional effort/cost estimates from new project's functional requirements 8) easy integration with open source ERP products like OFBiz (which may make trakcing resources and manpower easier, as well as connect real production data to the enterprise's accounting systems) 9) easy integration with CMS products, like Wordpress (especally for production documentation, includng degin documentation and user guides and reference manuals) 10) easy integration with verion control systems such as subversion. If there is a decent product that supports all of this, great (and language used to implement it doesn't matter), but if I have to write code to add missing requirements, then I am limited to those implemented using Perl or Java (and running on Tomcat). I don't know PHP well enough, and I don't know Ruby at all; and I really don't want to think about implementing this sort of thing in C++ (though I could if absolutely necessary). If you have project management experience, and use tools that are available for Suse Linux, what software product(s) did you use, and with what result? While I await relies, I will continue to review web documentation for those products I have found so far, to see if any of them are a) suitable for use in production and b) to see to what extent they support the features I am after. I have seen a number of products so far in my search, that deserve to be nameless, because they provide no way to relate cost estimates to one's team's track record, or to the details of the design, and seem satisfied with production of a pretty gantt chart (which is why I have formed the view that there is a whole lots of chaffe in the set of applications that call themselves project menement software - I have yet to find anything that really has the potential of being labelled wheat). Unable to start KDE Plasma X11 desktop

I have a misbehaving laptop that no longer can bring up the KDE Plasma X11 desktop. On booting up, it reaches the KDE login prompt but after entering my credentials, it flashes a set of commands (too fast to read) and then goes back to the KDE login prompt. The credentials are correct and this happens no matter whether it is another user or root logging in. In searching through log files (messages, boot.log, warn etc.) the only clue that I found in in the Xorg.0.log file where I observed this very suspicious bit of nonsense. I would be happy to present the entire log but it is rather long, if that would be more helpful. Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

Missing window frames on XFCE after update

Hi, I had to shutdown my machine due to impending power outage. Clever me I figured I'd update before shutdown to pick up whatever was new. Well, whatever is new since my last update on openSUSE Leap 15.5 messed up my XFCE settings. When I start a new application there are no window frames and everything starts in the upper left hand corner. Alt-Tab is not working to switch between apps Since there are no window frames I cannot move windows around. And there is only 1 workspace, albeit the workspace settings dialog shows that there should be 4, which is what I had setup prior to system shutdown. Any ideas? Hi. I'm pretty new using openSUSE Tumbleweed. I want to ask you if the official firefox package is still on the version 124. I know i can use the common tar.bz2 tarball uncompressed into /opt for use firefox 125, but i always prefer use the official packages from the distro repos. Leap 15.5, Plasma 5.27.9, x11 A few weeks since I last did updates. Just applied all the current updates and now upon login to Plasma, the default panel doesn't always appear. Logged out and back in again, it was there. Hoped it was a one-off, buggy config update. After another reboot, it took 4 login attempts until I reached a desktop with the panel showing. All the items in the panel are there as per usual, nothing lost, but a PITA and waste of time to get there. Fortunately I often go a week or more without reboots so it won't happen so often. Anybody else has seen this, or knows of a bug or bugfix? I just applied a glut of updates from the last couple of months and didn't see anything particularly Plasma or KDE-related, so it's difficult to pinpoint which package might be responsible. gumb

This is unsafe, as it disables systemd's process lifecycle management for the service. Please update the service to use a safer KillMode=, such as 'mixed' or 'control-group'. Hi, yesterday i updated one tumbleweed system to plasma 6 graphic: Radeon RX 7900XT 20GB open surce drivers could anybody tell me where i find the settings for the hardware accelleration? (switch on off, change driver) i was looking in systemsettings workspace behavior (and other places but did not find) .. at the moment i also did not find in plasma 5 but i remember somewhere there was this settings... and, i recognized that if i use x11 "glmark2" or "vkmark" will not work. one works the other not (i am on another system now, and i have forgotten which on.) with wayland both work. simoN -- www.becherer.de

Hi, a second tumbleweed system i updated this has graphic: Radeon RX 6900XT open source drivers and with wayland i have a invisible cursor. in x11 cursor is here. there is a logitech mouse connected, but i do not think this is related. Hi, thinking around because of updating the first tumbleweed machines to plasma 6 wayland (not connected to his here:) i have a setup: suse linux 10.1 (I586) as a virtual machine. there is running a proprietary (graphical) software, there is no way to get it at a more modern system running. i have to use this software on several other machines opensuse tumbleweed by accessing it with "ssh -X" (x11 forwarding) i do this since years, works perfect. so my question is, if i update now my tumbleweed systems will this still run if kde-plasma is finally switched to wayland? or how will it be possible to start the software multiple times on the virtual machine from different up to date tumbleweed systems (of course i need the graphical output)? anybody have similar systems/setup's and expirience? simoN -- www.becherer.de

cpupower-gui failing to apply config at boot.

Hi, openSUSE Tumbleweed 20240418 is installed on this machine. I am noticing these messages now relating to cpupower-gui in a journalctl -b log output. https://paste.opensuse.org/pastes/3fa21ae9b076 cpupower-gui has become unable to launch through application menu as well as Konsole now. I reported a bug on cpupower-gui github page yesterday. https://github.com/vagnum08/cpupower-gui/issues/119 Started an ICEWM session (I thought it may be KDE related issue). Attempted start from Konsole by passing: # cpupower-gui -p resulting in a failure and output the same as shown in the log file. Upgrade help

Was running Leap 15.0. Made a backup (rsync) of /home. Tonight installed Leap 15.5. 2 questions: * how do I permanently mount /dev/sda1 as /home? Things have changed a bit since the last time I did that. * I had 2 instances of firefox in 15.0. When I start FF in 15.5, it has no idea about my profile. If I tell it to use what appears to be the correct one, FF argues, says I'm trying to run an old version and it will (maybe) corrupt my data and gives me 2 choices: make a new profile or quit. %$#@! How do I get FF to use my data: tabs, bookmarks, etc from 15.0? Oh, yeah - the 2 instances I had on 15.0? When I start FF it picks up the tabs from one (the wrong one, of course!). Maybe I am just tired but I could not figure it out so I'm reaching out. Thanks, Fred

Kernel updates 6.8.5 and 6.8.6 fail to decrypt root with systemd-boot

Hi everyone, I'm using Tumbleweed with KDE Plasma 6 and full disk encryption with systemd-boot instead of Grub. This worked nicely until the last two kernel updates. Now, there is no password prompt during prompt for disk decryption with 6.8.5-1-default and 6.8.6-1-default. It still works with the older 6.8.4-rc1-default and previous, which are still available in the boot menu along with the btrfs snapshots (but it is not necessary to boot from am older snapshot). In general, I much like the systemd-boot approach for the single password prompt. With Grub, I need to enter the password twice. The boot messages are cluttered and messy, though, but I think this will improve over time. Any help or hint is appreciated. Thanks Daniel

Tumbleweed : Cannot find ksysguard anymore - is it gone? Libraries are all available and installed though.

I have to setup a bug report and have to list multiple instances of kontakt opening for a specific user. Normally this was done comfortably with kysguard. But the fact is, although the libraries are installed, the program itself seems gone from the repos (or(!) the program is not functional, which then would grant a bug report). Is anybody able to start it in Tumbleweed? dolphin and dicom files on nfs mounts

Hi *, using dolphin I'd like to open dicom files from a locally mounted nfs share, but instead of opening the appropriate app (i.e. xmedcon), dolphin presents the "Choose Application" dialog. When opening the properties dialog of such a dicom file, it shows an unknown type, but dicom image as "content". Trying the same on a local filesystem, xmedcon is started directly, and the properties dialog shows DICOM image as "type" and "open with" xmedcon. With thunar for example the behaviour is the same for local or nfs filesystems. In both cases xmedcon is started on double clicking such a file. Any idea, what configuration for dolphin/plasma I am missing here? System is Tumbleweed with the latest snapshot. TIA. Bye. Michael.

SOT: Thunderbird and AOL

My wife uses Thunderbird on Windows 11 for her e-mail. She uses the free AOL mail. For decades. Today, it stopped allowing outgoing mail. She called AOL help line. Some one using a script who didn't really understand whats going on. After she exhausted her script she started a hard sell for a paid plan. It appears to be only $4.99 a month. I'm unclear if subscribing, 3rd party e-mail clients are supported. The $4.99 paid plan, 2-step verification with a 6 digit code in a text message, or an app password. Does anyone have experience with any of these? TIA, Jeffrey

Showfoto crashes

Hello! My Showfoto has suddenly, like a bolt from the blue, started to crash every time I try to start it with an image. See below. What is going on? I can't install openSUSE on a Windows 11 Pro machine

I just bought a computer that came preinstalled with Windows 11 pro. I have set the BIOS to boot to USB so I can install openSUSE. The machine ignores the USB drive. I think this is a security "feature" to prevent the installation of malware, which Microsoft defines as anything you didn't get from Microsoft. OpenSUSE uses a Microsoft signed "shim" for their software. I suspect this means they need to get it signed with the new signing keys. Can anyone confirm if this is the case?? xz security alert and CVE-2024-3094

Hi, If you're using an up-to-date Tumbleweed, please make sure to update as soon as possible your system. The latest versions of "xz" (5.6.0 and 5.6.1) contained malicious code ( refer to CVE-2024-3094 ) and the package in Tumbleweed has been reverted back to version 5.4. After reading this mail, please update your system and ensure you're downgrading xz to the version *5.6.1.revertto5.4. *This version despite**itsname is version 5.4. Last step is reboot your system. KDE6 / Wayland remote desktop.

I know that remote desktops are still a moving target in Wayland. Out of curiosity I tried to access a remote desktop running in an up-to-date Tumbleweed system. I selected to start with what I had been using successfully previously. This message is just a status report on my use. And a request for suggestions as to how best to proceed. I always have this set up so the main desktop is shared. We mainly use this doing support. I use x11vnc on the remote desktop, with this command that starts when I access port 5900 (via an entry in xinetd): /usr/bin/x11vnc -inetd -rfbauth /etc/vncpasswd \ -o /var/log/x11vnc.log -display :0 \ -auth /run/sddm/{*-*-*-*-*} -env FD_XDM=1 \ -shared -forever My client command is: vncviewer -passwd /home/roger/.vncpasswd stingray:0 where stingray is the system sharing the desktop. I use x11vnc -storepasswd on the server, and vncpasswd on the client to manage the password. Prior to the update to KDE6, this had been working. I suspect that the change to Wayland in the update has broken things. I expected that. It is not a total failure. When I connect, the password and other things still work. I get a window that is the expected size (a laptop with an external display sized window). Unfortunately the window contents are fully black. Moving the mouse or pressing a key does not make a change. I suspect that I need to move away from X (x11vnc after all) and start investigating Wayland compatible solutions. Are there any? Especially ones that work as I am - share the existing desktop? Other than this and the odd decision of KDE to no longer disable a touchpad when a mouse is connected, KDE6/Wayland seems to be working fine for my uses. -- Roger Oberholtzer

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. I tried, but ended up having to use the portal that had a very odd interface: https://idp-portal.suse.com/univention/self-service/#page=profiledata I recall that info being modifiable in buildservice before (or am I just senile?) Hi, On the openSUSE package search page, https://search.opensuse.org/packages/ (which has no entry for Leap 15.5 yet) I get a button named [AppStream Install]. Clicking there nothing happens. The URL is: appstream://com.github.louis77.tuner Obviously, FF doesn't know what to do with that, and doesn't even say I don't know what this is. The wiki page on it: https://en.opensuse.org/AppStream Doesn't provide useful information, like how to install such a package on Leap or what to do with FF. I have done this on another computer, but I'm not on that location and don't have my notes on it.
