[opensuse] Microsof is considering switching to rust. What about Linux? [possibly OT]

Apparently Microsoft is considering switching to Rust instead of C or C++, because it apparently avoids many memory related bugs that plague C/C++ programs. Firefox switched or is switching since 2016. I wonder if Linux at large will do a similar move. [opensuse] Force dhcp client to request new address - Network Manager 15.0

Is there any way to force the DHCP client to do a full DHCP request, that is discover, offer, request, ack sequence? Currently, if the client runs within the existing lease time, then it just does a request, ack. I have tried dhclient -r, but that doesn't do it. [opensuse] strange ntfs problem

Hello, I have a strange problem, I can probably fix it with windows, but I would like to make it with openSUSE :-) I use an IODD2541 device - the one that allows to load various dvd as dvd (virtual dvd reader). The isos have to be copied in a special folder _iso. yesterday, I tried to download the 15.1 iso, and may be it was not a good idea, I dl it right into the _iso folder. This device works only with ntfs file system :-( it was late, and I had to leave so shut down the computer. The download was obviously finished, said Firefox. BUT... today, from 15.0, I can write to the _iso folder, but the 15.1 iso file is broken. For what I understand, when I stopped the computer the file was dowloaded, but not copied to the final place. As you may know FF dl to a "part" file, then move it to the real one. Now I have a XX.iso.part file (3.8Gb), and I can do nothing with it, nor remove it nor rename it? I also have a dummy file (the iso without .part), 3.6Gb, not seen in dolphin but seen in an xterm with ?? in the attribute part I can do nothing with either file. [opensuse] kio-gdrive not working

I'm not able to get working kio-gdrive (version 1.2.5). I installed kio-gdrive, wrote GD account and password and went to Dolphin - Network - Google Drive - my account. Afther a click on my account, an "unknown error" appears in Dolphin. I'm doing well or should I do something more? I had not used kio-gdrive before. [opensuse] Display too large Plasma leap 15.0

Hi A new installation of leap 15.0 on a Dell Optiplex with Intel on board graphics, problem is that KDE desktop (which I favour) is too large to be useable, other DE's like XFCE and Icewm which I've tried both ok. 15.1 is worse on this box, the intaller screen being too large by default and attempting to log in to plasma just gets a blank screen, hence trying 15.0 for now. [opensuse] Creating a software RAID 1 with one device? mdadm: option -t not valid in create mode.

Scope: I have two discs with 4 TB. One is used as home. I wish to run home on a RAID1. But I have no means to do a backup of all data. Solution: trying to create a "broken" RAID1 with mdadm on sdb1 and copy over the data. Mount the RAID 1 as /home to see if all works. Format sda1 (current /home) and join then the disk to the RAID1. Currently I am stuck already at the first step: With reference to: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/63928/can-i-create-a-software-raid… I tried the proposed solution. The RAID1 should be EXT4. So: mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=mirror --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb1 missing mkfs -text4 /dev/md0 But, when I try I get a (for me) surprising response from mdadm: mdadm: option -t not valid in create mode I am not aware that I am using an option -t in the command. So it is possible that I am commiting a syntax error. Can anybody help me out about what I am doing wrong? (All this is of course in su -) P.S. I tried with: no partition, partition sdb1 not formatted, partition sdb1 formatted already in EXT4. The answer is always the same. [opensuse] VirtuaBox on Tumbleweed

I have a 32-bit openSUSE 13.1 VirtualBox image that I run on 64-bit openSUSE 42.3. That works fine. I would like to run this image on 64-bit Tumbleweed (up-to-date). So I exported/imported it. No complaints in those two steps. When I try to start the image, I get the boot screen and it then wants to start the kernel. Initially, it prints the stuff like the following. FATAL: Module ohci_hcd not found. FATAL: Module uhci_hcd not found. This is expected. Or at least I recall seeing these message all the time. Then the boot stops for a long time (more than a minute). Then the geeko on a branch is shown. If I press ESC to see what is happening, I see it prints things like: Trying manual resume from /dev/disk/by-id/ata-VBOX_HARDDISK/VBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ-part2 But it then complains it cannot be found. After trying a few other partition names, it asks: Want me to fall back to /dev/disk/by-id/ata-VBOX_HARDDISK/VBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ-part1 (Y/n) Pressing Y does nothing. The machine is stopped. The same happened when I just copied the image files. But then I suspected it was because I just copied the files. I thought that export/import should do the right thing. Since I exported the machine, I would expect the partition stuff to be correct. Have I missed the obvious? [opensuse] Mailinglist outage yesterday

Hello, (sorry for the massive cross-post - if you answer, please reply only on one mailinglist) TL;DR: If you sent a mail to one of the openSUSE mailinglists yesterday and it didn't arrive, please re-send it. Please also re-send any mail you sent to admin(a)o.o or board(a)o.o yesterday. Longer version: As you probably noticed by observing the silence in your inbox, the mailinglists were down yesterday. This downtime which had two reasons: a) postfix not starting on our outgoing mailserver after a kernel update and reboot - one of the server's IPs wasn't configured fast enough on boot and prevented starting postfix b) our mailinglist software needing additional AppArmor permissions after a kernel update. This is a known change for newer kernel versions, but shouldn't happen as part of a kernel update, therefore I opened https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1142120 The downtime started around 7:00 UTC (9:00 CEST). I noticed it in the evening, and around 21:50 UTC (23:50 CEST) everything worked again. a) wouldn't be too bad - the sending mailservers queues the mails, and they "just" get delayed. Unfortunately issue b) is more problematic - it seems the mailinglist software failed with $? = 0 so postfix thought the mails were successfully delivered, but in fact they are more or less lost. (Our mailinglist admin found them in the incoming/ directory, but he's on vacation with terrible internet access and probably can't do much about this in the next days. Sending out the then-old mails when he's back doesn't really make sense IMHO.) Therefore: If you sent a mail to one of our mailinglists yesterday and it didn't arrive, please re-send it. [opensuse] Network Manager KDE 15.0 - Difference between "disabled" and "ignored" method

In Network Manager, it's possible to choose a "method" for IPv4 and IPv6. With IPv4, there's a "disabled" method, which prevents the interface from getting an IPv4 address. On IPv6, however, there is no disabled, but there is "ignored". With ignored, the interface still gets an IPv6 address from my network, which is not quite what I'm looking for. Is there any way to disable an IPv6 address, without disabling it entirely for all connections? This is for testing with Wireshark, when I don't want anything from this computer contaminating the capture.
