[opensuse] Partitioning Recommendations on New Install

Hi guys, I know this has been asked many times, and probably by me more than once, but here goes again. I finally got an SSD which I'd like to install on my Linux box. Yea! Starting off with a new drive I have the luxury to start fresh, i.e. place grub where I want. But, I liked to maintain my existing installs as bootable at least for a while while I get the new install set up properly. But new install on a new drive gives me that chance to re-think my past partitioning setup and bring it up to current thinking. I'm on Leap 42.3 and I'd like to stay with Leap (not TW), 42.3 has been very stable and to my liking. Currently I have 2 physical drives, sda with Grub in MBR (I think), sda1 is swap, sda5 and sda6 are installation drives (extended), and sda7 is basically storage. sdb is music, nothing else. What I've done in the past is to do / installs of new releases in the older of the two sda6 or sda7, alternating between keeping the newest, and installing the new release on the older of the two. No separate /home, all each in /. That way I could keep my most current release working and install the new one to play with and migrate to when ready, basically copy /home over the the new install. I have had problems with Grub finding the older install from time to time, but mostly this worked. But, openSuse has moved forward and seems there's a better way to upgrade now. My new SSD is a 120GB Kingston. I don't think I could do the 2 separate partition installs on this as my current partition is 100GB with about 50GB free. I don't want to limit my working space too much. The 120GB drive would give me about 50 or 55GB space for each of the two and I feel that's too limiting. I do plan on keeping teh current sda for large files and other storage to save space on the SSD. So to get down to it, what is the recommended way to install Leap 15 on this new drive? I'd like to keep boot access to at least 42.3. I'm not sure how that will work with Grub on MBR on sda. Should Grub go on the new SSD, and in MBR or other? And what's the recommended partitioning scheme so that I can upgrade or clean install new releases going forward? Install is for a basic desktop, no email server or web server. Not major use anyway. Intel i5 4GB ram Currently have Leap 42.3 and oS 13.2 but don't' need that. Not sure you need this but here's my current partitioning setup. [opensuse] OT: Accessing Web Interface

Hi all. I have a new network device. An Extron DVS 304 to be precise. I want to access the web page by IP. The IP address is 192.168.254.254 255.255.0.0 my network is 192.168.0.* 255.255.255.0 When I type in the IP 192.168.254.254 firefox takes about 5 mins then never loads the page and says The connection has timed out. I tried resetting the unit. I tried setting my PC to 192.168.254.1 255.255.0.0 Can anyone give me a pointer as to what I am doing wrong? I am kinda racking my brains on this and know it is probably either duck soup easy or impossible... I have a SOHO network at home configured with one system using SuSEFirewall2 (yeah I know it is deprecated now...) running OpenSuSE Leap 15, with 2 NICs. SuSEFirewall2 provides NAT (masquerading) between my external NIC (which has a static IP address assigned to it) and my internal private LAN on the other NIC. My ISP just upgraded my internet connection with fiber optics cable and as a super bonus gave me a block of public static IP addresses to enjoy. So what I would like to do with these is to assign them so that I can get a couple of my internal machines to be directly available from the internet using these new static IP addresses. (I have been doing the things I want with a lot of FW_FORWARD_MASQ definitions in SuSEFirewall2 and playing fast and loose with port assignments) And I have a number of overlapping and duplicated services, like VNC, Web, SSH, Email etc that I have had to juggle running on two or more different systems. I know that with YaST I can assign all these new static IP addresses to the NIC card that I use to connect me to the fiber optics cable, what I don't know/understand is how to connect/route/forward (whatever the terminology is) these static IP addresses and assign them to different computers on my network, while at the same time maintaining the topology of my private LAN. Do I need separate cabling or can I do this over my existing cables? Without getting Martian errors? Can I assign both an internal DHCP assigned IP address and one of these static IP addresses to the same NIC card? And can any and all port connection requests, made on one of these static IP addresses, be routed to the appropriate "internal" machine by default? (yeah I will run a firewall on it also since it will become directly exposed to the internet if this is possible.) This is new territory for me, never had to do anything like this before! So appreciate any and all kind words of advice... Marc... On a fresh TW install and clean zypper dup (installation completely up to date), I use update alternatives to switch the displaymanager/windowmanager to wdm/windowmaker. Upon doing so, systemctl start displaymanager does not complete and session will time-out after a few minutes. Devs, Why on earth are the following packages automatically pulled in on zypper up? [opensuse] zypper dup fails on tumbleweed update

So, I am trying to do zypper dup on tumbleweed, and it failed at this package: btrfsmaintenance-0.4.2-1.1.noarch The way it failed was that it was doing the install, and stalled at installing this package when it was 92% installed. It sat there for a looooong time... I noticed the partition was full up to its reserve requirement, so I increased it with tune2fs -m 1 /dev/sda2 This freed up space, but the installation of this would not proceed. So I finally hit ctrl-c to kill it (maybe that was a bad idea?)... and it killed it, but most of the distribution upgrade is already installed, so I cannot reboot on this partition... BTW, I am not even using btrfs; I am using ext4, so I don't know why TW wants me to have this package in the first place, but that is another issue... back to the issue at hand... I am stuck with a partially installed distribution upgrade, and so I cannot reboot, but I also cannot complete the upgrade. When I try to reinstall it, I get this: after many package checks... [opensuse] Leap 15 / Plasma issue

Don't know why but somehow my plasma desktop dropped all but one of the icons. It is like I have switched to another desktop with only one icon on it.... the ~HOME/Desktop directory shows all are there EXCEPT the one being displayed. This has to be some stupidly easy fix but as yet I have not found it. Maybe someone more fluent in Plasma can point me the way. To all those who replied and offered help, I thank you but as you will see, everyone's ideas were wide of the mark. To sum up the problem, when I bypassed my router and connected the ethernet output of the broadband equipment direct to my computer, I could no longer access most https sites. The matter was further complicated by my limited amount of troubleshooting time available. I followed several dead ends but this morning, after a really long sleep, I plugged the cable into the Win7 box and it did the same. Since this action wasn't normal, I finally smelled a giant rat in the form of an ISP and called tech support and the %$#!! first tier tech support dude had a process for that!!! Go figure ... they only authenticate to the first known MAC address in their list, in this case the old router. Well, by the time we were done, my new Asus gigabit router (which hadn't worked when I first tried to use it - HAH!) worked just fine, everything was up and running and my download speed was still sucky but not by as much. Damn their screwy system but at least the problem was solved.
