[opensuse] Why are brltty and qemu automatically pulled in in zypper up when they are not already installed?

Devs, Why on earth are the following packages automatically pulled in on zypper up? The following 34 NEW packages are going to be installed: brltty brltty-driver-at-spi2 brltty-driver-brlapi brltty-driver-xwindow libbrlapi0_6 libcacard0 libcelt051-0 libfdt1 libibverbs libibverbs1 libmlx5-1 librados2 librbd1 librdmacm1 libspice-server1 libusbredirparser1 libvdeplug3 libvirglrenderer0 libvte-2_91-0 qemu qemu-block-curl qemu-block-rbd qemu-ipxe qemu-ksm qemu-kvm qemu-seabios qemu-sgabios qemu-tools qemu-vgabios qemu-x86 rdma-core vte-lang xbrlapi xen-libs That's over 120 meg of junk I'll never use. I'm not blind and I don't have a braille capable terminal. Why would anyone think to make that an auto-install? That probably would only apply to less than 0.01% of the users? -- David C. [opensuse] zypper dup fails on tumbleweed update

So, I am trying to do zypper dup on tumbleweed, and it failed at this package: btrfsmaintenance-0.4.2-1.1.noarch The way it failed was that it was doing the install, and stalled at installing this package when it was 92% installed. It sat there for a looooong time... I noticed the partition was full up to its reserve requirement, so I increased it with tune2fs -m 1 /dev/sda2 This freed up space, but the installation of this would not proceed. So I finally hit ctrl-c to kill it (maybe that was a bad idea?)... and it killed it, but most of the distribution upgrade is already installed, so I cannot reboot on this partition... BTW, I am not even using btrfs; I am using ext4, so I don't know why TW wants me to have this package in the first place, but that is another issue... back to the issue at hand... I am stuck with a partially installed distribution upgrade, and so I cannot reboot, but I also cannot complete the upgrade. When I try to reinstall it, I get this: after many package checks... [a/r/i] (a): r This is where I am stuck. It seems the problem is the exclusive lock. I tried undeleting the /var/lib/rpm/.rpm.lock file, and it still did the same thing. Any help please? [opensuse] Leap 15 / Plasma issue

Don't know why but somehow my plasma desktop dropped all but one of the icons. It is like I have switched to another desktop with only one icon on it.... the ~HOME/Desktop directory shows all are there EXCEPT the one being displayed. This has to be some stupidly easy fix but as yet I have not found it. Maybe someone more fluent in Plasma can point me the way. To all those who replied and offered help, I thank you but as you will see, everyone's ideas were wide of the mark. To sum up the problem, when I bypassed my router and connected the ethernet output of the broadband equipment direct to my computer, I could no longer access most https sites. The matter was further complicated by my limited amount of troubleshooting time available. I followed several dead ends but this morning, after a really long sleep, I plugged the cable into the Win7 box and it did the same. Since this action wasn't normal, I finally smelled a giant rat in the form of an ISP and called tech support and the %$#!! first tier tech support dude had a process for that!!! Go figure ... they only authenticate to the first known MAC address in their list, in this case the old router. Well, by the time we were done, my new Asus gigabit router (which hadn't worked when I first tried to use it - HAH!) worked just fine, everything was up and running and my download speed was still sucky but not by as much. Damn their screwy system but at least the problem was solved. FINALLY! My sff cube (mini-itx) system went belly up last Sept and since then I had been using an Ubuntu server box as my desktop system. What an unstable P.O.S. that combo is. After Christmas wifey had heard enough of my cursing and said, "Buy yourself a new computer for Christmas!". Translation: dip into your savings and build another computer, so I did. Ryzen 7 2900X, 32GB 3200MHz RAM, 500GB M2 SSD, 3TB hdd, GTX1060 3GB video, all on a sff mini-itx board with a sff 600W power supply that all fit in the old enclosure - with an after market low profile cpu cooler. The 500G ssd holds OS, swap and boot, the 3TB hdd is /home. Installed Leap 15. Goodgawdalmighty this system is FAST! Did a video card benchmark, got really crappy frame rates around 350 or so, then went to Nvidia and got their driver and BOOM! frame rates jumped to about 12000. And I don't even play games. I do, however, do video processing occasionally and it is nice to know I won't have to wait forever for jobs to finish. I finished the project with an Asus RT-AC68U router. All together, I spend around $1400 on the project and am hoping that the hardware will last me for a few years. The opensuse group discussions have been invaluable. [opensuse] Spec'ing a 50 TB dedicated storage subsystem and room to grow?

All, I bought a used iSCSI based Drobo in 2016 with 50TB in it. It works great, but it isn't fast by today's standards. (100 MB/sec absolute max). And I never got it to work from openSUSE (Windows and Mac did work). I now need to buy something similar, but with fast I/O and Linux support: 10 Gbit Ethernet and fibre-channel may be my only options? Or are there point-to-point SAS external racks I should consider? Also, I will likely want to put a SSD based cache in the mix at some point. It could be integrated into the storage subsystem, or I could use something like bcache and have the SSD be in the server,. It just needs to be reliable and fast. Recommendations? (I'm thinking used and $10K at the high-end for the subsystem including PCIx cards and switches, if needed.) == details I need to buy a server with 50TB usable disk for a production environment. A high speed disk subsystem is critical. And the project may scale up over time. It doesn't need to be a fail-over cluster, just a single server. I'm looking at used equipment most likely. I was thinking one with 4 CPU sockets would let me start with 2 CPUs and then expand to 4 later on. Lots of RAM capacity would also be great. My first thought was to get a Dell R920 and throw a bunch of disks in it. https://goo.gl/images/x3Rfj2 24 disk slots! But then I looked at what size drives are available for those slots: 2.5 inch. I only see 2TB drives max. I'm hoping to use a Dell server because it's the preferred brand at my (new) job. Unless I'm missing something a standalone rack mount Dell won't work. So, now I'm looking at a used R820 most likely and some sort of disk subsystem to support it. I picked it because it is only a 5-year old design and it has 4 CPU sockets I can expand into as the server demand increases over time. [opensuse] Reboot with DVD

Zypper dup crashed. To install on a USB stick failed because the file is to great. I managed to get the snapshot on a DVD. I tried to boot with the DVD with boot priority: 1 ATAPI CDROM: Slimtype DVD A DA8A6SH 2 opensuse-secureboot WDC WD10 JPVX-22JC3TO 3 Windows Boot Manager It refused to install. What can I do?
