[opensuse] Discard vs. dm-crypt

Hi, On multiple of my machines I have the root filesystem on a dm-crypt device placed on an SSD. Now, I would like to use `fstrim /`. Now, I know about the security implications. But, as encryption for me primarily is a way to be able to throw out disks without further effort, I don't consider those a problem for me. Sadly, on any system I installed directly with Leap 15.0 I cannot get this to work. Any hints on what might be causing the different behavior? [opensuse] Annoying bug / incompatibility with temperature plasmoid in TW.

Hello everybody. I am struggling to understand the following bug/ incompatibility when running temperature monitor plasmoid with TW. https://paste.opensuse.org/view//51764536 Is how it looks like. The monitors for sdd, hdds are working. GPU and CPU no values. Now, when I do a "reload temperature sources it looks like this: https://paste.opensuse.org/view//24347012 The CPU value is low, when under normal usage it is 20 and idle 6 because it is very well cooled. So the values are right, no problem. I tried to shorten refresh times but now luck. Now, strangely enough, there is no way apparently to have it work right from the start. You always have manually to reload the data, once the system runs and then, even only seconds after the boot up, it will run well until shutdown. Hours or days it does not matter. It is surely a minor annoyance, but in precedent version it had the issue with all temp sources. Now "just" with two. I would really like to understand why this is so and if I can fix it. [opensuse] securing home network

I've been thinking about security a bit. Most of my home security depends on my ADSL router and especially on the NAT it provides. Now I could try to harden every machine on my network, which I admit would be best practice, but (a) I'm lazy and (b) I've got little control over some of the devices on the network. So I've been wondering about putting another dedicated machine in between my router and my network to make it harder to penetrate. My router also provides my WAN, FWIW. Is this at all sane? Would openSUSE make a good basis for the machine? What software would I need to run on it? What hardware power would I need? [opensuse] Problem with libpam.so

Hi - I am wanting to track down and grok a really bad error message in vsftpd which I and a lot of other folks (as reported by Google) are having troubles with. So I decided to try and compile it from source but I ran into a snag, the loader is complaining about the symbols in libpam.so.0 I have verified that the x32 and x64 bit versions of libpam are installed as well as the developer packages. Any gurus around who know why I am getting this belly ache? For reference - OpenSuSE Leap 15.0 x64 bit system. I downloaded the source files for vsftpd as follows - First I determined the package info - marc@bigbang:~/vsftpd> rpm -q --qf '%{disturl}\n' vsftpd obs://build.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Maintenance:8566/openSUSE_Leap_15.0_Updat… Then use this info with osc to get the source code - marc@bigbang:~/vsftpd> osc co -r 89aacae22103943e0d60bcb0d3c2b665 openSUSE:Maintenance:8566 vsftpd.openSUSE_Leap_15.0_Update I made a #define change in one of the header files to include SSL support (as directed in the documentation) which is the area I am having troubles with. [opensuse] gcc 4.8 needed?

Seamonkey does not compile properly with gcc 7. Although it works superficially, it crashes on a website. Leap 15 does not have 4.8. Hello, I've seen a weird behaviour that seems to be related to the GPU driver on a EliteBook 8470w. Chrome and Firefox randomly crash (sometimes a tab, sometimes full application instance) and saw some kind of funkiness with VirtualBox + Windows 10 guest. [opensuse] Porting uuids and guids

A recent thread about uuids prompts me to ask a question that I have been meaning to ask for a number of years now and never got around to it. (I have always just gritted my teeth and fixed this issue manually) When I upgrade my systems from one version of OpenSuSE to the next, I often remount partitions from an older system onto the new system (/home and /srv in particular) And this leads to problems with uuids and guids as the new system will often reassign the values associated with each of the standard uuids/guids to different values. Also I sometimes create new uuids and guids which the new system does not know anything about. My question is this, is there any way to export/import the uuids and guids assigned in one version of OpenSuSE to another newer version? I know this would also entail having to reprocess the entire file system to change all the assigned values of uuids and guids as appropriate. Sure would make life easier if this could be done in an automated fashion.... How to others managed this issue? If there is an existing tool for doing this, Google is not finding it for me....
