Previously, in 13.2 and Leap the su command did not need the "-" to get the full --login PATH env variable. I forget when this changed. Good evening from Singapore! The foremost question which I want to ask is, what is the universal (world wide) understanding behind degaussing hard drives? I work for No Secrets Agency (NSA) Pte Ltd (fictitious company name used). My sales manager Edward Joseph Snowden (fictitious individual name used) had *promised* our customer Leave Me in the Lurch (S) Pte Ltd (fictitious company name used) that we would "DEGAUSS" their hard disks after the PC replacement and data migration exercise for 15 trillion PCs (fictitious number used). PC = Personal Computer, which includes desktops and laptops Last Friday, I had already reflected to my sales manager Edward Snowden that since we are definitely NOT going to wipe our customer's data by using strong and powerful magnets (physical means), should I send an email to the IT Administrator of our customer Lady Gaga (fictitious individual name used) asking her which data sanitization method (by software means) I should use? My sales manager Edward Snowden had quickly deflected my concerns (that is, wanting to send an email to our customer Lady Gaga asking her which data sanitization method I should use). I had brought up to the sales manager Edward Snowden a number of data wiping methods by software means last Friday. (1) Very very simple 1-pass data wiping, quickest a. Using "sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda", overwriting harddisks from beginning to end with zeroes, where /dev/sda refers to the 500 GB harddisk, not /dev/loop0 and not /dev/sdb which refers to the bootable live operating system on thumb drive b. Using "sudo dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/sda", overwriting harddisks from beginning to end with random data, where /dev/sda refers to the 500 GB harddisk, not /dev/loop0 and not /dev/sdb which refers to the bootable live operating system on thumb drive Any bootable Live CD/DVD/flash media could do it. (2) 3-pass U.S. Government/Department of Defense (DoD) standard (DoD 5220.22-M) Certified commercial software required (3) 7-pass U.S. Government/Department of Defense (DoD) standard (DoD 5220.22-M) Certified commercial software required (4) 35-pass Gutmann method, slowest Certified commercial software required All these was last Friday. In the midst of our argument over the cellular network "just now", my sales manager Edward Snowden tried to cover up himself by suddenly and unexpectedly making an excuse that he had told me last Friday I was supposed to wipe user data only, not the operating system! If he had wanted me to wipe user data and retain/keep the Windows operating system, he should simply have told me to Reset the PC (for Windows 10 only) or use a =secure File Shredder=! For Windows 7, you can still wipe user data and preserve the operating system by using the Recovery Partition. On Lenovo desktops, press and hold F11 when Windows 7 is starting and reset to factory defaults. I had advised my sales manager Edward Snowden not to use BIG WORDS like "degaussing the harddisk" and market to the customer using these big words. Any person who sees the word "degauss" would have understood it to mean sanitize *ALL* data on the harddisk straight away and without question. Please refer to Figure 1. [opensuse] Please help with enscript and fonts

I currently use enscript to print my text files. For a long time I have used the font description "-fCourier7". I wished to change this to a larger font, and perhaps bold. But I cannot determine how I discovered the -fCourier7. I have tried listing fonts without success: xfontsel xlsfonts fc-list and looked in the directory /usr/share/fonts. I do not understand how Courier7 gets translated into a filename, and what fonts are available. There is probably some way to view available fonts using LibreOffice Writer, but I do not know how to do it. I also looked under Yast at configuring fonts, but saw no help there. My major questions are, 1. What fonts can I use under enscript and what do I call them? 2. What fonts are on my machine? I am afraid this is probably a stupid question for those of you in the know, but I have spent many hours under Google without success. [opensuse] Printing emails from Kontact/Kmail

Hi, I'm using openSuse 42.3 with the kmail version supplied and starting today when I want to print a email message the box with the message that kmail is going to open an external browser appears, I click yes for chrome browser and it doesn't render the message to print, just shows the plain html text. But ... if I open the file produced by kmail to the browser (with the format kontact.raSPiE) with firefox, it renders to print. But ... if I alter the name of the file to kontact.raSPiE.html, Chrome renders it to print. I've tried to change the default browser to firefox, but kmail always call Chrome. [opensuse] Wicked 30s Timeout on boot of 42.3 - how to fix?

All, As I sort out the 42.3 install, I'm down my checklist to "Why does wicked create a 30s delay in the boot process?" Basically, after systemd-analyze plot > opensuse_42.3_boot_delay.svg there is no question who/what the culprit is: Apr 18 17:15:24 wizard systemd[1]: Starting wicked managed network interfaces... Apr 18 17:15:54 wizard wicked[1159]: lo up Apr 18 17:15:54 wizard wicked[1159]: wlan0 up Apr 18 17:15:54 wizard wicked[1159]: eth0 setup-in-progress Apr 18 17:15:54 wizard systemd[1]: Started wicked managed network interfaces. >From 17:15:24 - to - 17:15:54, wicked is just sitting there spinning its wheels. [opensuse] booting into openSUSE (degraded btrfs raid-root)

Hello, web search without X11 is difficult.. Anyone knows how I can boot into openSUSE (Leap 42.3) on a btrfs root filesystem, which got degraded. I wanted to exchange a defective harddisk. [opensuse] Grey Streets: a Good Idea?

Hi Folks, Just to stir things up, I'll forward a quote from Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti: "Climate change is a fact of life that people in Los Angeles and cities around the world live with every day. It is a grave threat to our health, our environment, and our economy — and it is not debatable or negotiable," I wonder what exactly this "fact of life" is? Not debatable? Sounds like an article of faith, doesn't it? So to fight the evil of climate change, Los Angeles has embarked on a program to paint all their city streets grey. http://www.foxnews.com/us/2018/04/10/los-angeles-painting-city-streets-whit… I'm sure that grey streets will lower their surface temperature a bit, won't it just bounce the sun's heat up into the air again? Only to be trapped and redirected down again by the CO2? Oh, don't worry, it's not too expensive. LA has about 6,500-miles of non-freeway streets, and at $40,000/mile for the coating, will only cost $260,000,000-US. It's a real deal and only needs to be reapplied every seven years. That would mean that you'd have to apply 77.3-miles of coating per month, or assuming a standard work-year, about .5-miles per hour, to keep the coating fresh and functional on all 6,500-miles of streets. Note that the cost doesn't include installation labor, I wonder how many men would be fully employed and at what cost to keep this going? All that being said, it looks like a cool product. The photos on the company's website look nice, I wonder how long it really lasts before flaking off and running down the storm drains, then to pollute the oceans?
