[opensuse] Dazed and confused (kernel)

I get this funny error message in both my laptops running Leap 15 some times after they wake up from hibernation: Message from syslogd@ronaldinho at Nov 13 19:59:17 ... kernel:[766544.994402] Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason 2c on CPU 0. kernel:[766544.994404] Do you have a strange power saving mode enabled? kernel:[766544.994405] Dazed and confused, but trying to continue I don't know what qualifies as strange power saving mode. I use hybrid suspend, when closing the lid, but this error also happens when I hibernate manually and it does not happen every time. The kernel behaves perfectly well otherwise, despite being dazed and confused. Has anyone seen this and should I worry about it or report a bug? [opensuse] using a caddy on dvd port

Hello, I buy a second ssd, to put it in a caddy using the unuseful dvd port of my ASUS laptop. [opensuse] 'mv' a read-only directory doesn't work...why not?

I had two items in dir 'a', file1 and dir1 (empty) I have full rwx access to 'a' (and am owner): dir a: drwxrwxrwx 3 law lawgroup 29 Nov 9 07:59 ./ dr-xr-xr-x 2 law lawgroup 6 Nov 9 07:25 dir1/ -r--r--r-- 1 law lawgroup 0 Nov 9 07:25 file1 dir b: drwxrwxrwx 2 law lawgroup 6 Nov 9 07:59 ./ try to move everything in 'a' to 'b': > mv a/* b/ mv: cannot move 'a/dir1' to 'b/dir1': Permission denied I know this is basic unix/linux 101, but I need some review: Permissions of parent allow things to transfer in and out of the parent, right? The settings on file1 and dir1 for 'read-only' should affect the file and the directory, right? So why is moving 'dir1' from 'a' to 'b' disallowed? Shouldn't the move only look at the rw permissions on 'a' and 'b'? To "emphasize the point": 1) I can do a 'cp -a a/dir1 b/' which works. Since they are on the same device, even hardlinks will be duplicated. 2) I can then follow-up with 'rmdir a/dir1', which also works (no warning like when removing a file): > rm a/file1 rm: remove write-protected regular empty file 'a/file1'? I.e. the exact same actions 'mv' would do if I was copying between devices. So could someone explain why move doesn't use the parent directory permissions? I don't remember this being standard unix behavior...?? [opensuse] Wine Error : /usr/bin/../lib64/libc.so.6: invalid ELF header

Hi, Aplogies if this has already been asked. I have a machine running openSUSE Leap 15.0, and I have installed wine via 'yast2 sw_single'. However when I try to execute wincfg I get the following winecfg /usr/bin/wineserver: error while loading shared libraries: /usr/bin/../lib64/libc.so.6: invalid ELF header I have the following wine installed wine-3.7-lp150.1.7.x86_64 Wed 14 Nov 2018 11:19:55 AM EST wine-gecko-2.47-lp150.1.3.noarch Wed 14 Nov 2018 11:19:51 AM EST wine-32bit-3.7-lp150.1.7.x86_64 Wed 14 Nov 2018 11:19:47 AM EST Has anyone else seen this? Can anyone point me in the direction of a fix if there is one. [opensuse] Can not send email using postfix on Bell, probably port 25 blocked.

Hi, I can no longer send email "normally", I get: status=deferred (connect to mail.gmx.es[212.227.17.174]:25: Connection timed out) on all mail accounts. My guess that suddenly Bell figured out it should block me or port 25 outgoing. Stupid! :-( So I told Thunderbird to send without using postfix, and that apparently works (if you see this, it works), but I want to keep using postfix. TH is using port 465, SSL/TLS, and password. [opensuse] A start job is running for dev-sda9.device

Hello: I have the following problem in my openSUSE Leap 42.3 system. I have an old IDE drive but I don't have IDE connector on my motherboard. I have inserted a PCI-IDE card into the motherboard. The card is recognized when I turn on the computer and the IDE drive attached to the card is also recognized. Grub is started correctly and it starts booting the OS. But soon booting stops with the following few lines at the end of message stream: [OK] Reached target Remote File Systems (Pre). [OK] Reached target Remote File Systems. [OK] Reached target System Initialization. [OK] Reached target Basic System. [..] A start job is running for dev-sda9.device (...min ..s / no limit) sda9 is the root partition of the OS and it seems the boot cannot find it and stops. In my fstab sda9 is defined as: UUID=97b17a79-12e8-4222-8702-972d121b9c9b / ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 1 I suppose the culprit might be the initrd, maybe sda9 is hard coded into it, but I am not sure. Anyway, how could I trace what the problem is and fix it? If I remove the IDE hard drive attached to the PCI-IDE card, the system boots normal. Some additional questions regarding the boot message stream: How can I read the lines scrolled up, that is scrolling the screen? Which is the point (what message) in the message stream where the booted OS takes the job from initrd? Another queston regarding initrd/initramsfs: How can I uncompress the initramfs to a temporary directory in Leap 42.3? None of the answers I found for linux general worked (gzip -dc, cpio -i). I was reviewing the weekly DMARC digest for my domain, and over the course of the past week some 600+ messages were sent from openSUSE/SUSE servers as my domain. [opensuse] Login weirdness

Leap 42.3 Haven't encountered this on previous installations, nor prior to a few weeks ago on this box. On a reboot, where it wold normally prompt for login, login: <typing anything here is not echoed back to the screen> Give Root Password for Maintenance (or press Control-D to continue) trying to log in normally just keeps having the terminal behave strangely, re-outputing some version of the above. hitting CTRL-D just sends it into a shutdown sequence. Hitting ENTER many times eventually produces "Welcome To OpenSuse".... and a login prompt which works normally. I find the following in journalctl: Oct 30 15:19:42 blinkenlights login[946]: gkr-pam: error looking up user information Oct 30 15:19:43 blinkenlights login[946]: pam_unix(login:auth): check pass; user unknown which I think comes from the botched efforts while it was saying """ Give Root Password for Maintenance (or press Control-D to continue) """ I recall seeing an error message about tty1 on the screen when I was in the midst of the failed logins and reboots, but I do not find it in journalctl. Suggestions for fixing/debugging, etc.?? journalctl _does_ show: Oct 30 16:50:25 blinkenlights smartd[929]: Device: /dev/sda [SAT], 16 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors Oct 30 16:50:25 blinkenlights smartd[929]: Device: /dev/sda [SAT], 16 Offline uncorrectable sectors Not sure if that is pertainent. [opensuse] 3D PDF

Has anyone played with viewing 3D PDF's on Linux? A sample file is http://www.3dpdfmaker.com/index.php/download_file/force/339/ Okular opens the file. But it does not support the 3D parts. There is a claim that Acroread on all platforms supports 3D. I have not used that in ages.
