[opensuse] Building a mid-range desktop PC - lower cost MB/CPU/video solution?

All, By chance, I've built a couple high-end tower PCs in the last year. $1500-$2500 each Now I want to build one closer to $500, but I want to have as much commonality as makes sense. Definitely the same case for cosmetic reasons. I'm hoping I can save a lot of money in the CPU/video selection, and also I will use a lot less RAM this time. == The $500 desire doesn't include a HDD/SDD. (I've got spare SSDs I can use, and I just ordered a small NVMe SSD to experiment with, so I won't count it in this budget if this is where it ends up permanently.) I don't need screaming speed, etc. and I'm happy with the cheapest graphics solution I can get. These are the core components I bought last time: Termaltake V51 case - $100 (mandatory for this build. I want it to look the same.) AsRock X99 MB - $175 (It would be very nice to use again, but not mandatory.) i7-5820K 3.3GHz - $370 (don't need) Asus Radeon RT 360 - $120 (don't need) === Is there a reasonable cost CPU w/integrated graphics that I can use with the X99? Or is there a different MB/CPU/Video solution I should consider that might be closer to $200 combined? [opensuse] Packet update dependencies

Once more, I get a message that an update is available, and among it a security update. When I click on it, it says "a package depencency failed". This happens quite frequently, and recently I had to wait about 3 weeks, before I could update properly, as KDE 5.6 kmail was broken, to the point of being unusable. [opensuse] appending date to a file name

It is really sad to get old. I use to know how to do this. I want to append a date (m-d-y) to a file. The command should be something like the following using touch as and example: touch temp[command involving date] so the result is similar to "temp_07-15-16". Thanks for any suggestions. [opensuse] Collision between GUI sessions if program from another user run under first user GUI session.

Originally, after finding out that kdesu, followed by dolphin, did not work, I had posted to the openSUSE forum in the section on openSUSE 13.2 at https://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/510414-Running-Dolphin-under-use… asking how I could open up a file manager window under a user other than the one the full GUI session belonged to. For example, if I have the computer booted into a full KDE GUI desktop session under user [joe], I had posted on the openSUSE forum asking how I could open up in [joe]'s KDE desktop session a file manager window running under user [john] and with the privileges of user [john] (instead of [joe]). Ultimately, I got that first question answered, but then encountered another problem. If I have the computer booted into a full KDE GUI desktop session (on vt7) under user [joe] and open up a file manager window under user [john] in [joe]'s KDE desktop session, and then open up a full KDE GUI desktop session (on vt8) under user [john] as shown in the screenshot at http://techccu.com/users/compwiz/pictures/opensuse-forums/thread1/snapshot4…, the two KDE GUI desktop sessions will collide. Specifically, [john]'s desktop screen and keyboard input will show up on vt7 and will hide [joe]'s desktop screen and keyboard input. However, some of john]'s windows (e.g. the logout confirmation screen) will still show up on vt8 and will only accept input on vt8. This collision will occur even if I close out the file manager window for [john] in [joe]'s KDE desktop session before opening up a full KDE GUI desktop session under user [john]. If I already have a full KDE GUI desktop session under user [john] open before I open up a file manager window under [john] in [joe]'s KDE desktop session, the collision will occur if I close out [john]'s KDE desktop session and then open another KDE desktop session under [john]. This collision also occurs with user [root]. If I open up a file manager window under [root] using the command as setup by the openSUSE 13.2 install program and then open up a full KDE desktop session under [root], the same collision between [joe] and [root] will occur. The only way to prevent the collision is to log [joe] out and then log [joe] back in again after having closed out the file manager window under [john] (or [root]) and before opening up any full KDE GUI desktop sessions under any other users. Since the following sockets get replaced when [joe] logs out and then back in again: /run/user/<UID joe>/ksocket-joe/kdeinit4__0 /run/user/<UID joe>/ksocket-joe/kdesud_:0 I had asked on the forum for the names of the programs that are responsible for creating and removing those sockets, and the names of the RPM files those programs belong to. A moderator on the forum had referred me to this mailing list and suggested that I pose my questions here. My questions are: (1) has this collision problem already been fixed and is it just a matter of upgrading some RPMs in order to get rid of this collision problem? If that is the case, could you please give me the full filenames for those RPMs so that I can manually upgrade them. The computer on which I have the openSUSE 13.2 installed does not connect to the internet so I will need to download and install those RPMs manually. Tuesday was Groundhog-Da^Flash-Update-Day again[99] ... the usual flash security update is out, get version 11.2.202.632! ... for oS 13.1/13.2 via the official update repos, you should have them active already ... for oS versions since 12.1 that are unsupported (12.x) or where flash is unsupported (Leap, TW), i.e. all but 13.x (but I build for those anyway), from my home repo: <http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/dnh/>. [I'll probably add Leap 42.2 soonish, Dave Plater is apparently already testing my build for Leap 42.2.] Oh, BTW: I recommend you add my repo only with a low priority, i.e. a high number (say 199), as other packages of my repo might mess up your system. Then, switch ONLY the "flash-player*" packages you want by manually selecting the "home:dnh" .632 version in the version-tab in Yast to my repo. You'll then get that packages and only those from "me", and also future updates thanks to "vendor pinning". Feel free to ask for more details about the repo-handling (esp. for this case of one-out-of-lots packages from some home:* repo ;) ==== -de Kurzversion ==== ... und "täglich" grüßt das Murmelt^Flash-Update ... I recommend you get the prefbar FF/Seamonkey extension[1] with which it is one click in a checkbox for Flash to be (en-/dis-)abled and then keep Flash disabled unless you really need it. Or find some similar extension for Chrom* or whatever. Also, disabling JS (via NoScript etc.) is good too. I have a friend that wants to setup thunderbird to have a light blue background highlight to show which column is being sorted by. [opensuse] Leap: Download of wallpapers seems broken? Or better something is broken with the network? Puzzled.

Try the following: go on the desktop, choose settings, download new backgrounds. The result is here: a) on a Leap system with normal file settings, this fails with "network error (4)" b) on a Leap system (other PC) with secure file systems this fails with the message: that the xml file in question does not have any entry. Now after resetting privoxy after some time it loads. The behaviour seems to be quite random, however it may have to do also with network problems I have when using privoxy, network manager and wlan. In this setup I have the impossibility to get network on browsers as long as I do not reset privoxy with su - systemctl restart privoxy.service Only then my systems becomes functional. I did file a bug report about half a year ago but got now response. But that should not be connected because privoxy is not set systemwide. Does anybody else experiences these issues? Any idea what could be the cause of this? On the first leap system however there is no privoxy installed and everything is standard working there via wicked.
