[opensuse] 12.3 mkinitrd [MODULES] 'modinfo -k "3.7.10-1.16-default" -F supported' returned with an error

The message in $SUBJ is what I see when I run "mkinitrd -v -f network". openSUSE 12.3 had some problems with iSCSI and authentication, so when I install 12.3, I have to fiddle the iSCSI setup myself (the bug was fixed, but not in the installation system). I thought I had it working, but for some reason the default initrd (made by yast), doesn't include network support. So I rebuilt with network support (on an identical machine). On boot-up, iSCSI still isn't started, and when I tried to build the initrd with "-f iscsi", I am told that feature "iscsi" is not supported ?? It is listed in the man page, and the usage output from "mkinitrd -help", so I don't know quite how to interpret that. Regardless, I suspect $SUBJ is the real problem. Then I tried to look at something on the computer, and I typed "ctrl-alt-right". No response. The mouse responded, but not the keyboard. So it was not the keyboard hardware. I sshed-in from a laptop: I run top, nothing obvious. In the end, I had to reboot the computer. I could see the flow of chars somewhere in the stop sequence. Now things seem normal. What could have been the problem? [opensuse] Long time loading initrd

Hi All, How do I go about finding out what's going on with the initrd? On one of my machines (an 8-core unit with SSD root drive) there is a 5 second wait while loading initrd, and the rest of the boot process takes a further 5 seconds... On the other desktop (dual-core, standard HDs) and an old (3years+) netbook (celeron with old SSD) the initrd is loaded within a second. I'm working on the hypothesis that the main machine's initrd is doing or loading a lot more than on the other two machines, but how do I find out. In fact, since there is no separate /boot partition, I'm wondering if I even need the initrd? If not, how do I disable it? [opensuse] SuSE studio, NFS/httpd/misc appliance, and 4TB drives

Hi, all -- You may remember from earlier this year that I asked about how to not spend a lot of time building and maintaining my disk farm server and was pointed to susestudio. It sounds awesome, and I'm gonna get there -- I promise :-) Actually, it's time, because I've just gotten a pair of 4T drives and find that I can't access them. I only have an older BIOS-based system available, but I'm hopeful that I can find GPT-enabled kernels in the studio images so that I can use these. My plan is to boot from flash drive in order to maintain as many SATA slots as possible for data drives, so I don't expect to have to boot from these guys; I just need to be able to address them. I don't know if that makes my BIOS-based adventures any easier, though. Can anyone provide any pointers on - using >2T drives for data in a BIOS-based system - susestudio appliances and GPT and large drives, oh my - and, since I'm here, getting started with susestudio to get me headed in the right direction? [opensuse] top reporting %mem incorrectly?

This morning when I logged into my computer, I noticed that my system monitor was saying that I was using up ~6GB of memory, so I decided to fire up top and see what was using it. And I noticed something - the %mem fields look really off. For example, Chrome is using ~1G, and it says that's 10.7% of memory. But, Virtualbox is using ~1.3G, and it says that it's only using 0.5% of memory? I thought, well, maybe it's just showing the percentage used by that individual process but the amount of all of the processes with the same name, but nope, there's only one VirtualBox process running. Is this a bug, or is something else going on? I'm running 32-bit oS 12.3 with 8GB of memory. ...when the boot process reaches the stage 'Starting Login Service'? I have noticed this for quite some time but hadn't bothered about this until now. When the system is booting there is a pause of 21.7 seconds when the kernel messages on the screen show 'Starting Login Service'. After this pause the login screen is reached in about 3 seconds. Anybody know why there is this long pause, please? I really don't remember when this started but if it is of any relevance this delay is present even in the just-upgraded kernel 3.11.1-2. It would be great to have those files sorted by name or create-date first before the names get thrown at the second script. [opensuse] Any chance of convincing Gimp to consider a .png as a valid saved image?

If I scan a dozen images, I have to keep track of what I save to PNG or JPG, because GIMP insists that none are saved and that I'm going to lose my data. It wants me to save as XCF and I will not. Is there a working updated gimp version. The version I have, aside from just being aweful, is broken when saving pngs from xfc and when I upgraded it complained of a wrong libgimp version.
