[opensuse] What is the "official" way to mount floppy in openSUSE 12.x?

Hello: The subject says the question. [In pre 12 suse versions I had a /media/floppy directory where the floppy could be mounted at (by using the floppy icon on KDE3's desktop). In 12.x there is no such directory, and if created it will be removed at next boot, as I know correctly. Of course I could make a floppy dir under / or somewhere else, but I'd prefer its location to be in /media, since floppy is a media. Why should it be then outside of media dir?] What is the official way of mounting floppy in 12.x.? I have openSUSE 12.1 with KDE3 currently. [opensuse] opensuse12.3 - cannot make ext drive available to all users

We recently upgraded our office desktop to opensuse 12.3, and have run into a problem with external drives. Our office desktop is used by several people during the day; each user has her/his own account, and users switch between them with the usual ctrl+alt+Fn combination. Most of our data is stored on an external drive. The first user plugs it in, and the last user of the day ejects it and stores it away securely. At least, that's what used to happen with opensuse 12.2. Since moving to 12.3, we find we can't do that. The first user has sole use of the drive in /var/run/media/<username1>, and other users have no access, which means they cannot access or update our data. Is there any (fairly straightforward) way we can restore the previous behaviour, and allow multiple users to access the external drive? [opensuse] Drive, space and usage

I am upgrading from 500GB to 1TB drives. The 500GB drives are 99% full. After I do the initial upgrade, how is the data spread across the drive ? Contiguous from front to back like Windows FS ? Or evenly spread (but contiguously) across the drive ? Ultimately, I'm trying to figure out - is the front of the drive going to get the brunt of the work or is the data going to be scattered across the drive. [opensuse] On switching from runlevel 3 to 5, two partitions are umounted (by systemd??)

Then I switch to runlevel 5, and log in. Eventually, I noticed that those two partitions were not mounted. I thought that perhaps I did not mount them. So this time I checked. I mounted them, and verified that the content was available. I then started level 5 (init 5). I typed ctrl-alt-f1, and listed the content of those partitions: not mounted. [opensuse] KDE WM appears to have died

Caveat: I am not a programmer and will likely not understand programmer- speak. Recently, running 11.4, happily for quite some time I might add, the login failed and I could not re-start it. Switched to another terminal but found nothing useful to me. Using startx in another terminal the return message said to remove the /tmp/.X0-lock file and try again, which I did, to no happiness. Not wanting to venture too far into areas I do not know or understand, I decided to upgrade to 12.3 with the thought that that might fix things along the way. Has not. I now see messages suggesting issues with plastic(?) and fatal errors. I have, however, been able to log in and work using the IceWM. I also tried adding many files for Gnome to see if that would become an available WM. Only got an error message for that. Would like to get back to KDE, but would not be against a Gnome experience. Is there something simple I am missing (almost certainly so)? I will try to write down more of error messages as I assume someome will want that. Thanks for your attention and any assistance. [opensuse] legacy device support on modern motherboard and linux

Hello: Most modern motherboards do not have serial, parallel, IDE, floppy, and even PCI ports. I guess there exist PCI-E expansion cards for serial, parallel, and IDE connection. The question is whether they are usable in linux. Will e.g. a serial card work in linux with my serial modem or other old device with serial port? The same question applies to parallel and IDE connections. Previously on this forum someone wrote that floppy PCI/PCI-E cards are not working in linux. Do USB floppy work? [opensuse] mounting wrong partition after upgrade

I just finished a painful upgrade to 12.3 (zypper dup dropped me to emergency console) things now seem to be restored, but the system is mounting /dev/sda7 as /usr rather than what is in fstab I created a copy in this partition when the ext3 partitions were not being found, so it's still working, but it's not as big as I'd like. Could my switching fstab to device rather than ID be the cause?
