[opensuse] Do we need a dedicated update notification icon in the systray?

Hey everybody! Forget about apper or PackageKit or whatever, just the simple question, completely detached from the code that makes it work – or not: Do you want a dedicated icon in the system try (panel) of your desktop that shows you whether updates are available? [opensuse] Opensuse 12.1 apps can't be run on newer suse? Why not? Why are they tied to 1 version now?

This used to be possible -- load newer glibs they'd still be compat with older ones, and then could load apps you needed newer versions of. My deal breaker was perl 5.16.[012] had some unicode fixes in it that I needed, but if you check the logs on here I was complaining about not being able to build perl5.16.1 last summer --- was told I needed to use a clean system to build.... Well tried that but that didn't work either and no one seemed willing to fix the problem that I was told had messed up my home directory so I couldn't log in. It was a short lived problem where trying to signup and login only console registration, and not from the web, resulted in an incomplete or misconfigured directory setup. Anyway, long story, still not solved -> lead me to needing to install from 12.2, Around then I started asking why all the packages were tightly tided to gether now so you couldnl't update something like perl without all of yast breaking -- it's all tied to features in 5.14. Asked about that and similar issues with glibc, -- was told that older apps should run on newer systems as long as they versions aren't too far apart, but new stuff on old machines was a definite no go. That's how I've always understood it...but someone built all of the yast rpm's with specific older versions of things -- ALOT of packages claim they will only work with 1 version of software -- that didn't used to be the case. But that's why I've had all theseproblems ... no way to get from here to there... ARGGGG!!!! [opensuse] Device Manager

Hi All I've just ripped "Pink Floyd - Wish you were here" to my hard disk in one login session using the device manager selection to rip via K3b. That all worked well and i closed k3b. I logged out of that user session, pressed the DVD release button manually and removed the disk. I then logged in as a different user and the device manager popped up in this new user showing all the options i had on the previous login to do something with the Pink Floyd CD as if it was still in the machine. I didn't do anything and logged out. I then logged in as a 3rd different user and the same thing happened so this time i selected to rip with k3b again and it correctly said it couldn't find /dev/sr0. I logged out. I then re-logged into the 1st user and the device manger didn't pop up this time. Anyone know why device manager didn;t realise there was nothing in the DVD tray to access? [opensuse] Remove XEN from boot options

12.2 Hi I installed XEN using yast. I now have no use for it. I've deleted the xen related stuff but still have it as a boot option on startup. I've looked at yast boot loader in attempts to remove the boot entry from the menu but without any luck. How do I remove an entry from the boot list? [opensuse] [PRINTER] Samsung CLX-3185 won't print

Hi ! Simon123 said me last night "Write the mailing-list" ! :-) I do ! I bought it for a customer and after discuss with Samsung Pro help-desk. I had explained their the computer works with OpenSUSE 12.1 (now .2 up to date) and I wanted to be sure it would work. But it doesn't. I put some helpful files there : http://cups.18informatique.com First attempt, on a fresh install, It does. After 5 days, the customer call me to ask help cause she wasn't able to print or scan. The scanner is now ok : I create a job to mount usbfs (see "cron" on my site) The printer always gives me two different errors : - (/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertosamsungsplc) crashed on signal 11. or - "/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertosamsungsplc failed" I checked the driver's files rights and I try it as user and root. I had to modify the SmartPanel install script cause variable $DESKTOP_OWNER was not properly declared. I set it with the user name. I did not sleep much, but I hope I have said enough for you to help me because I really need, I'm at the end of the solutions I could find myself. [opensuse] purging records from Quasar Accounting DB...............

I am running Quasar Accounting and it uses Postgresql for its database. I need a utility to purge accounting data (say from 2006). Natively, Quasar does NOT have a utility do to this. So, I'm looking for some help. P.S. There are way too many records to do it directly with a SQL dump. [opensuse] Again problems with systemd

Hello all, Some problems here with snmpd and systemd on OpenSuSE 12.2. systemctl start snmpd.service systemctl status snmpd.service snmpd.service - snmpd Loaded: loaded (/lib/systemd/system/snmpd.service; linked) Active: inactive (dead) since Fri, 15 Feb 2013 18:15:39 +0100; 1s ago Process: 20099 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/snmpd (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS) CGroup: name=systemd:/system/snmpd.service No trace in the logs of what happening. The same config on an OpenSuSE pre-systemd (11.4), works perfectly. And, if i try to start it manually, it works. Question: how to debug that problem? Other Question: generally, how to debug systemd startup problems? Any info about this is welcome.
