[opensuse] Support for Intel and Crucial SSDs

I have two servers that have failed hard drives. They are each about 3 years old. I am considering replacing the drives, and their controllers by SATA controllers and SSDs. However, I have been told by a number of local experts that often times the SSDs are not properly recognised, and also that at least some require special drivers. If I restrict consideration to the best SSDs on the market (as far as I can tell, that would be Intel and Crucial), do I need to worry about locating special drivers for the drive for use on the latest Suse distribution. And, if the controller is SATA, do I need to worry about the drive being recognised, at least for models produced in the last year or so? What does you collective experience indicate? [opensuse] Command line interface to Service Manager settings?

I would like to change some Service Manager settings in KDE 4.x on openSUSE 12.x. For example, I would like to disable certain services like Apper or BlueDevil from running. I know how to do this via the Desktop configuration GUI, but I would like to make these changes via a software installation script. Is there a command line interface to this sort of thing? [opensuse] nfsserver not starting

Hi. I´m trying to run the nfsserver daemon on two hosts and it won´t start. [opensuse] Question re filesystem reserved block percent

Advice, please . . . The default filesystem reserved blocks is 5%. IIRC that goes back a long time to when much smaller drives were in use. Is there a formula or rule-of-thumb now for today's large drives/partitions? I have quite a few 100-300GB partitions which I have tuned down to 3%, but it still seems I'm wasting a lot of space. [opensuse] Opensuse 12.2 - console screen blank after YOU

Hi, I have mounted OpenSuse 12.2 on a DELL Optiplx 960 from scratch. After the installation, all seems to be working fine. I then applied YOU to update all components, and rebooted. The system starts up to the point that says starting up ramdisk, the console screen then goes blank (black). I can log on over the network afterwards. The Xorg.log says: x server for display 0 cannot be started - session disabled. No screen is specified. Looks like the console start up screen is somehow corrupted. There is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf, but a set of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ files. A new scheme that I am not familiar with now. Does anyone have any idea what happens? Hello: I am (more accurately, my openSUSE 11.2 and 12.1 systems are) affected by this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/612292 Briefly, the symptoms are (copied from the link above): "When I mount a FAT32 partition, many files appear to have wrong timestamps. Specifically, during the winter months (Standard Time) all files modified in summer appear having their timestamps shifted by +1 hour. During the summer months (when Daylight Savings is in effect) these files have correct timestamps, but all the winter files have their timestamps shifted by -1 hour! When observing the same files under WinXP or Win98, timestamps always appear the same." As it seems that this bug has not been fixed yet, I try to solve the problem differently: I want to copy the files to the hard disk, and shift the time stamps after the copy. Is there a linux command that can do this (to shift the time stamp of multiple files by -1 hour in batch, or copy them with time shift)? I also would appreciate if someone could explain why the time stamps are handled differently according to winter/summer time. [opensuse] Another question about apache's httpd, but involving DNS and WordPress

I have been studying WordPress' multi-site install, which basically involves multiple IP address and domain names on a single server. Apparently, Wordpress has code that keeps the content of different wordpress sites separate, based on the domain name, even though wordpress is installed in a single htdocs directory. Based on that study, I started to look at how I might simulate a server with multiple domains and ip addresses, using a local DNS server on one of my Suse virtual boxes. Alas, I have yet to find a good resource that explains the details of how DNS works and best practices for running a DNS server, or how or even if what I want to try is even possible. I do know how to configure Apache's httpd for multiple virtual hosts, but the DNS, and the domains I'd use for testing, are the sticking points. When I configured a server to have multiple virtual hosts, the domain names were real, and the internal IP addresses were mapped one to one to the external IP addresses for each domain name. In the case of the experiments I want to try, the domain names I'd use are entirely fiticious, but I want to make sure that they do not escape into the cloud (see, my level of ignorance on this matter is that I do not know if that is possible). The DNS question arises in another context, also, in that one of the resources I have been studying to learn how to set up NFS says that a DNS is required since NFS software uses a reverse lookup and may hang if a DNS is not available (though, for that, I want to map the private IP addresses to the machine names rather than to some fictisious domain name). I guess, to maximize my learning about these things, what I am looking for is more a combination of a tutorial and a howto or cookbook document than a reference manual (in the same sense that if I were to teach C++ programming, I'd use one of Stroustrups' books, or that by Koenig and Moo, instead of the latest ANSI C++ standard). [opensuse] MTP argh....

Hi, Who ever came up with the idea that one needs a protocol to copy a file..... Anyway, my son recently got a Motorola Razr M and silly me I did not do any research ahead of time. Thus I am now stuck with a device that does not function as a mass storage device and only has the stupid MTP option. I've sent a patch upstream and have a pending SR to add the device ID to libmtp in OBD. WIth this the mtp tools recognize the device and things appear to be working. While this would be an excellent opportunity to teach my son something about the command line ;) I am wondering if there is no GUI way to make MTP devices work? I know there is mtpfs but do not know how to connect the dots to maybe get the device to reveal it's secrets in the file browser. Also the dumb phone automounts as a CD, does anyone have any idea how to disable this. Running XFCE, but that the phone identifies itself as a CD is IMHO not related to the desktop environment ;) . The phone is running Android 4.1.1. The machine the phone gets connected to runs openSUSE 12.2. Thanks for any help. [opensuse] Click-able URL, howto

If I email an interesting URL to an interesting party they sometimes seem to have a problem with the URL because it is not click-able. Ctrl C, Ctrl V works of course in order to copy and paste, even in Win as I found out on my wife’s computer. But there must be a more elegant way to provide an URL.
