[opensuse] Cannot write to USB drives as $USER? - openSUSE12.1/KDE4.8.4

I've been puzzling over this one... it has to be simple/obvious, but I'm having a senior moment and can't seem to find the "right" way to make this work. The situation is, a new Linux user has a new openSUSE 12.1 x86_64 install and has updated it to KDE4.8.4. No other tweaks etc., and a default software lineup (other than the KDE4 update). He has an external 1 TB USB drive. He used YaST > Partioner to reformat the drive as ext4. This all went fine. Unplug the drive and plug it back in and it's automounted as expected... .except, $USER cannot write to the disk, only root has write permissions. Now on my own aged system I don't run into that issue.... but I can't remember if I changed something or what needs to be changed. I could say.. just open up a terminal and change the permissions on the mount point then plug in the drive (but that only works around the problem for that one drive)... or manually mount the drive with a different mask... but neither of these "solutions" should be necessary in a default setup should they? So... is there a configuration issue here? Or something else? What is the correct way for this to be handled? [opensuse] How to set Networkmanager to autoconnect on startup, or when waking up?

Hi, I think it is not very userfriendly to have to connect manualy (wifi) after quiting screensaver or when waking up. Also i am used to get connected when i startup automaticaly, this is also not happening. Is there reason as to why this happens, or a way to set it the way one wants/likes it? I think these apps should just work, and not draw unnecessary attention to themselves. I understand security is important, but why do i have to give my walletpassword if i want to establish a wpa2/tkip connection? I was used to be connected to my inbox, and tabs already loaded, when i was booted up. Now i have to manualy connect via a plasmoid, because ifup does not work anymore the way it did in earlier versions. Or maybe i am spoiled all these things could work automaticly, when once set up right? [opensuse] How do i set FF (already def browser) to open links from TB (instead of conq)?

Hi, (It annoys me to find konqueror to start up to display a link, while FF is already def browser and started up.) (It also annoys me that the way to change this behaviour is not intuitive, it is worse: Nowhere to be found.) (In my opinion it should be enough to default an app to permit it to act on my behalve..) [opensuse] about repositories...

I was reading with interest the thread on the KDE 4.8.4 repo, and one of the things that stuck to me most was that I don't fully understand how the repository system works. So please, begging your pardons, can someone point me in the right direction on where to read about the repository system, so that I can follow this more intelligently? Here is what I think I understand, and please correct me if I am wrong. There are 2 upstream KDE repos - KDE Factory (KDF) and KDE Release (KDR). There was an update put on both KDR and KDF so that we could upgrade to KDE 4.8.4. However, there was something wrong, which caused a lot of crashes, mostly with kmail, akonadi, and nepomuk. As to understanding what exactly went wrong, here is where it gets fuzzy. I read people writing things like: "Someone needs to update kdelibs4 in KDE:Release:48. The fix is already in KDE:Distro:Factory, but not pushed to KR48. And then we have to wait." - so my question is, when a statement like this is posted, who actually updates kdelibs4? Is it only people on the KDE development team, or are there people out here in the community that contribute to that and put it together and then rebuild it? Here is another quote: "Still the question remains why somebody would set the repo to publish but not check whether it actually builds for four days and counting." - My question on this is, who sets up the repo? I do not mean this to point fingers, but rather just so that I understand who in general sets up the repositories. Can anyone do it? Or do only KDE development people do it? - And then also, about building (which I assume mean all the packages and libraries compile and function together), how is a repository checked to see whether it builds? Again, is this something that we as a community are supposed to do? or are there development people that take it upon themselves to do it? -- G.O. [opensuse] lost the 'Other' option on login screen

12.1 network client Hi Under either lxdm or lightdm, clicking on 'Other', to be able to enter your network username, does not work. On other clients it brings up a prompt for Username. We can login fine at the command line however. I've tried reinstalling both display managers but still no go. Any ideas where to start looking?
