Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? Hi, I am trying to set up a simple repo, I read on the opensuse site about a binary called genIS_PLAINcache, because I can't see to find it or the package yast2-packmanager either. Can someone help. [opensuse] DenyHosts daemon mode on openSUSE 11.3

Hi, I am trying to run DenyHosts on OS 11.3. I can get it to sync and update the hosts.deny file, but with "rcdenyhosts status" it reports as being "unused" just after I started it with "rcdenyhosts start". I tried also with yast, setting up as a service (daemon) and starting it. It also stops immediately. In the denyhosts.log file there is no error info, just what it used to set it up at start. I've gone through the configs several times, no joy. Guys, With the iphone we were able to configure good print function via CUPS/Avahi, is there anything similar that can be done with an Android tablet? Looking, it doesn't appear that there is any basic print capability provided by Android (3.2 Honeycomb). I would like to print to by openSuSE server in the same manner I do from iOS. Anybody found a good solution? I have found PrintBot, but that isn't a solution because it cannot be used legally where confidentiality is required. (data is transferred to a 3rd party server before printing). I need to find a direct print solution. What says the braintrust? -- David C. I get Mozilla Firefox 16.0.2 some days ago and Thunderbird 16.0.2 today for my Windows machines but nothing yet for openSUSE 12.2. Thanks. Hello list, I've a question related to cron on SuSE. I like to set global environment variables for all cron jobs. I see, that per default the cron runs a /bin/sh (link to /bin/bash). But in this mode of bash, the profile file will not included. So my questions are: 1) Is there a possibility to set global environment variables with using /bin/sh? 2) Or if not, how do I configure the /bin/bash as default for all crontabs? I know, that I can set environment variables in the crontabs (cron.d, cron.daily, ...) itself, but that is not the requested solution. I tried to set the SHELL=/bin/bash in the /etc/crontab, but that is not working! Wouldn't it behoove MS, to implement the /home concept (separating the OS from the users' data in different partitions) ? Once I got "into" Linux, I never understood why MS did not implement this. [opensuse] samba-3.6.9-130.1.i586 breaks AD auth?

I have opensuse machines (12.2 on tumbleweed, 12.2 not on tumbleweed, and 12.1 not on tumbleweed) that run Samba configured as member servers in an AD domain. Windows clients and other machines (linux running samba etc) can map (or mount) samba exports. Everything was working fine until samba got updated on the machines to version 3.6.9-130.1 from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/network:/samba:/STABLE/. Now all attempts to map (or mount) fail with access denied. Is anyone else seeing this problem? [opensuse] Logitech h390 USB headset troubles

I needed a headset that doesn't use the standard headphone jack which has worn to the point where it is intermittent and will soon need pretty expensive service to work. So, I bought a Logitech h390 USB headset hoping that it would work on my openSuse 12.2 laptop (HP G72-B60US). I have all updates installed as of today. I had a little trouble getting it working, and net searches made it look pretty much hopeless, but I finally found a configuration that has both earphones and microphone working. So far so good, until I rebooted and it wouldn't work. I experimented and the following behaviors occur: 1. Booting with the h390 plugged in results in the headset not working. 2. Booting with the h390 plugged I can login to a user, but then the keyboard is totally unresponsive. The mouse still works. 3. Booting with the h390 unplugged and then logging into a user, and THEN plugging the h390 in allows the h390 and keyboard to function properly. 4. After step 3, locking the computer, or going into the sleep mode, and then returning to the user still allows the h390 and keyboard to function. 5. After step 3, switching to another user disables the h390 and the keyboard. 6. After step 5, switching back to the original user enables the h390 and keyboard. In any case where the h390 and keyboard do not function, I have found no combination of unplugging and plugging in the h390 that will re-enable the h390 and keyboard until the laptop is rebooted with the h390 unplugged. Obviously I can work around this, albeit in an ugly manner. Also, the other user is not computer savvy enough to be able to understand how to make it work, and I am basically trying to make her happy by getting video chat working for her. Please read Chapter 13 on Startup and Shutdown of the 5th edition of the Windows Internals book to get straightened out. Perhaps someone can explain to me why Windows doesn't need a pre-boot ramdisk in order to boot, while Linux does? I know Windows doesn't have all the drivers for all the hardware linked in with it's kernel -- it's dynamically loaded out of it's "/bin (windows/sytem32)" dir. So why does the linux kernel have this extra complication while windows does not? It's a bit embarrassing, I would think to see the wide range of HW supported by Windows **without** a special 'initrd' for drivers, while linux still doesn't support the range of HW that Windows does (some, but not ALL of that being due to short-sited HW providers who can't provide open specs or drivers). So what is Windows doing 'right', that Linux is unable to do? I have a laptop with a Gobi 2000 wireless modem. The qcserial module is automatically loaded at boot but the device appears to be inoperative [no response to commands via minicom and /dev/ttyUSB0].
