[opensuse] Upgrade of server with UEFI to 12.2

Hi, I maintain IBM x3200M3 Tower server running openSUSE 12.1. It serves mainly as small LAMP and SFTP. I'd like to upgrade it to 12.2, but I'm little afraid. It has UEFI instead of "normal" BIOS, HW RAID10 and ELILO. It was not possible to install GRUB there. I usually upgrade from running system using "zypper dup". Do You have any experience with such HW? Should I be aware of anything special when upgrading HW with UEFI, ELILO and HW RAID? Any hints and experiences appreciated. :-) Have a nice day! [opensuse] opensuse 12.2 32-bit on DL380 G3 and ethtool bug ?

Good afternoon, on HP DL380 G3 server I installed opensuse 12.2, all is functioning including network. But when I run "yast2 lan" (and on "yast lan" too) command I got a messages below this email. After a moment all passes and I could manage my network cards, system do not make a kernel panic or so. System is updated today, rebooted, no progress. Any ideas ? Thanks and best regards J.Karliak. [opensuse] update on12.2 went wrong

Hi all, I had to reinstall one of my systems, as it didn't get up any more. After reinstalling from dvd, i powered cycled to test grub. Then powered down, reconnected data-didks, and powered up again. Did an online update, i presume there were kernel packages, as yast wouldn't let me activate nfs-server: it complained i had to reboot again. So i did, and got no further then just: "grub" ;-( Unfortunately, the dvd does not contain the "repair" option, which might be handy with the new grub2. Disconnecting the data-drives and reboot doesn't help either. After restarting in "rescue-mode" from the dvd, it looks like the fs is ok, after mounting it manually i caninspect parts like /boot/grub2/grub.cfg. Question remains why it went wrong after the update? The manual just says: ""Bootloader Configuration after a Kernel Update Every time a new kernel is installed, the perl bootloader writes a new bootloader configuration file using the defaults specified in /etc/sysconfig/bootloader. If you are using a customized set of kernel parameters, make sure to adjust the relevant defaults in /etc/sysconfig/bootloader according to your needs. "" But i requested nothing fancy from grub2, just let yast2 do the installation. Any suggestions (to repair and to avoid it the next time) are welcome... [opensuse] SuSE-12.2 amarok problem

When using amarok to play an audio CD, the first track plays and then it stops. Under the Amarok tab there is a "stop after current track" option, but it can't be turned off for some reason. How do you play an entire audio CD without stopping between tracks with amarok on SuSE-12.2? [opensuse] evernote in POL won't play embedded sound clips

Howdy, I am trying to get evernote to work fully using PlayOnLinux. (I tried nixnote and will still use it, but it tends to delete my notes, so I am limited in its use until that is fixed.) I am on an ASUS laptop, U46E, with a core i7 processor. I have installed openSUSE 12.2 and am able to play regular sound files in the linux environment with out any problem, either Amarok, or whatever is necessary. Video works as well. I am running Evernote 4.5.8 using PlayOnLinux version 4.1.8, with an embedded wine installation version 1.4 inside POL, which was necessary to get the networking to work. When I copy a sound file to a note in Evernote, and then click on it to play, there is no sound. The activity log gives this error: 20:47:19 [12] Could not start audio playback: cannot play file exception, file: C:\users\george\Temp\enaudio\111021_006 taliyasi.mp3 The path to that file from outside the wine environment is /home/george/.PlayOnLinux/wineprefix/Evernote/drive_c/users/george/Temp/enaudio/111021_006 taliyasi.mp3 What it's supposed to do is this - the program should open up Amarok and play the sound file. A hyperlink to the web works - it opens up fireofx and gets right to the web. However, the sound configuration is messed up, so it won't open Amarok or something else, and neither will it play embedded. Also, when I right click on that sound file and hit "open with", on my windows machine (virtual box) it gives me a list of media options to play it with, like windows media player or itunes. In the wine version, the list is unpopulated. The command line does not give any clues. Any ideas? Thanks in advance, G.O. -- G.O. [opensuse] failed to start network manager but not using it anyway

Howdy, When I boot up my desktop (box #1 below), right before it goes into kdm, as I am watching all the services startup, one of the last ones that comes up is this: Failed to start Network Manager ...................[[1;31mFAILED[0m] See 'systemctl status NetworkManager.service' for details. Dependency failed. Aborted start of Network Manager Wait Online .....[[1;31m ABORT[0m] That is copied from the boot log (I added in the dots for clarity). I am not using network manger on this pc, as I just use ifup and configure it in yast. What sort of thing should I do in order to not have one of the startup scripts fail? -- G.O. [opensuse] Lightspark and library settings

Lightspark is compiled within the CMAKE framework. Notorious are the setting where you want to have the results put (directory) in. The 12.2 distribution store libraries where you would expect them to be from OpenSUSE. However, whatever I do, whatever file I tweak, most libraries end up in the /usr/lib directory instead of the the /usr/lib directories. Also, the browser plugins end-up in the ../mozilla/plugins directory instead of the ../browser-plugins directory. yes, I hate CMAKE because of the bewildering number of possible settings and their cross influences. However, have to live with it, but how do I setup parameters that libraries end up up where "I" want them to be? OpenSUSE has things in the right place, maybe the developers have the right setting and/or an script to alter various (source) files. [opensuse] Odd speed issues with a clean install of openSUSE 12.2

This is a weird one. This weekend I reinstalled openSUSE 12.2 on my computer (Zotac GIGA ID70, Intel i3 2600, 4GB RAM, Nvidia 430, 300GB HD, 120GB SSD). The previous install worked fine, but after all the fiddling I had done it was messy, and I also wanted to set up dual boot with Win7. I partitioned the SSD into 2, and installed Windows on one part (which works fine). I partitioned the mechanical drive into 2 and formatted it as NTFS. I installed openSUSE onto the second partition on the SSD and set up the second partition on the mechanical drive as storage. Now the problem. Booting openSUSE, which should be very fast is actually very slow. It boots in spurts. The Plymouth loading animation is very fast, and then there is a long period 15 seconds or more of black screen before KDE4.9.2 loads. Loading YAST Software Installer can take up to 15 or 20 minutes, and installing apps is equally slow. While loading the Repositories, YAST will sit there doing next to nothing and than flash, it loads one Repo... then nothing for a while and so on. Downloading apps during install is the same. YAST sits there doing nothign and then bam, the RPM is downloaded at the max for my ISP,... then nothing for a minute or two. I'm trying to copy a 35 Gig directory from a NAS drive to the openSUSE storage drive, and it's taking literally days to complete the copy where it should only take an hour or so (ran the copy for 6 hours and it only copied over 1.1Gb). [opensuse] Broken raid with 12.2 upgrade

I have 3 simple arrays, each with 2 partitions - sda1/sdb1, sda2/sdb2, sda3/sdb3. The first pair is for /boot, the second root, the third /home. After upgrading to 12.2 from DVD, at boot the stock 3.4.6 kernel throws this message, once for each partition: failed to executed /sbin/mdadm --incremental /dev/sda1 --offroot The arrays are still mountable and accessible after the system comes up. However, when I attempt to boot into the arrays (I have more than one instance of suse on the machine, the production instance uses the arrays), the root cannot be mounted and the boot fails. In this case the kernel throws this message, again for each of the 6 partitions: Invalid raid superblock magic on sda1 sda1 does not have a valid v0.90 superblock, not importing Anyone have a suggestion as to what is the problem? Previously I was using a 3.0.3 kernel with 11.4, and it still works fine with the arrays. I have used xine to watch digital TV (dvb) for years - until I installed 12.2. While xine plays DVDs it will not provide TV viewing. When I start xine I get an error message stating, "There is no MRL" and then, if I continue by clicking on the DVB tab I get an additional message, "Sorry, no valid channels.conf found" - which I *know* exists as I have been using them in 12.1 and they are also used in VLC (which I use successfully). Anyone have xine working for TV viewing or have any idea what the problem may be to cause the above error messages? I have searched around but only found some info which goes back to 2010 and concerns Fedora and Red Hat (and the files these refer to are not installed or belong in openSUSE). [opensuse] 11.2/KDE significantly faster than 12.2/KDE

As described in another thread, I recently upgraded a laptop to 12.2 only to receive massive complaints from the user that it had become slow to the point of being unworkable. I received various suggestions here on the list and tried them without achieving much improvement. Yesterday I installed 11.2 on exactly the same hardware, and it is _noticeably_ faster, even with the default settings. Looking at memory usage etc., there doesn't appear to be any significant differences between the two systems. Here is an example of the difference: 11.2 - screensaver is on, screen is blank. I hit a key, and have the login window *snap*! in less than 1 second. 12.2 - screensaver is on, screen is blank. I hit a key, and have the login window in, wait for it..., about 2 seconds, some times even 5. I can't really point a finger at anything in particular - the machine isn't overloaded, doesn't do much swapping, eye candy has been switched off, yet 12.2 seems particularly slower when switching tasks, including the time it takes for the switched-to window to become "ready". (I picked 11.2 by accident, it was the nearest NET install CD within reach). Hi all, does anybody knows from the top of his/her head if the utility "photorec" is included on any live-image? It seems one of my friends did something silly.... I used it before to recover files from an accidentilly wiped sd-card by means of my suse-laptop, but now i have to do the same trick for an entire, unknown pc (that very likely didn't have photorec installed) and as i don't want to change the filesystem anyfurther, i don't want to install it on the HD either. I've got a Zotac Giga ID70 (Intel i3 2100T, 4GB RAM, Nvidia GT430, RTL8111/8168B NIC, and RT3290 WiFi). Everything works out of the box except WiFi. I downloaded the WiFi driver (either from Zotac direct or from RT, they are the same), and did a make, make install, modprobe rt3290sta. WiFi came alive immediately, I was able to connect to my router, and everything seemed to be working properly. I tried downloading a file, and got a hard lock. Could not ssh in, keyboard and mouse were unresponsive. The only way to recover was a hard reset. I rebooted and tried again, this time by streaming a random YouTube video. Again a complete lock-up with only a hard reset. The lock-up only happens if I start downloading any stream of data. Normal use (eg web searches that don't result in a large stream of data are fine, but as soon as the data stream is large enough or continuous... lock-up). I've recently upgraded a laptop from 11.4 to 12.2 - the upgrade went very well, no issues at all. However, the machine is clearly not "big" enough to run 12.2+KDE, and the user is now complaining about it being slow and difficult to work with. [opensuse] Dolphin, smb and vlc

I have a mythtv box at home which has the videos folder shared via smb. If I browse to this folder via dolphin using smb://mythtv/videos/ I get a difference between what happens in Kubuntu 12.04 (KDE 4.9.2) and what happens in openSUSE (12.2, KDE 4.9.2). In Kubuntu if I click on a video, vlc opens and the video starts to play. In openSUSE if I click on a video vlc opens but it doesn't play it - instead the notification widget in the system tray shows me it's downloading the video. How do I change this to work the same way that Kubuntu does. I've checked all the VLC settings I can think of, as well as the video file associations and there does not appear to be any differences between Kubuntu and openSUSE. The first pair is for /boot, the second root, the third /home. After upgrading to 12.2 from DVD, at boot the stock 3.4.6 kernel throws this message, once for each partition: failed to executed /sbin/mdadm --incremental /dev/sda1 --offroot The arrays are still mountable and accessible after the system comes up. However, when I attempt to boot into the arrays (I have more than one instance of suse on the machine, the production instance uses the arrays), the root cannot be mounted and the boot fails. In this case the kernel throws this message, again for each of the 6 partitions: Invalid raid superblock magic on sda1 sda1 does not have a valid v0.90 superblock, not importing Anyone have a suggestion as to what is the problem? Previously I was using a 3.0.3 kernel with 11.4, and it still works fine with the arrays. Users who had upgraded to version 16 were advised to downgrade to the previous safe release until Firefox developers released a fix. FWIW, the subject line is true. I have several machines that fail when memtest is selected from the SuSE-12.2 DVD. The failure occurs at about 43% into the test where it starts random numbers. Just downloaded the 4.20 version (same version as on the 12.2 DVD) from the official site and it works fine. How could one screw that up? Two days lost on this one. [opensuse] incorrect xorg setup in openSUSE 12.1

Hello: I had to replace my nvidia card to an older ATI radeon 7000. Since I use xorg.conf for configuring X, the X window system could not be started with the new card. In openSUSE 11.2 this was not a problem at all: I started sax2 in a terminal and it configured X properly according to my display's native resolution, 1600x1200. In openSUSE 12.1, as it does not have sax2, I removed the old xorg.conf, and expected that the system configures X correctly. But instead of the native 1600x1200 resolution the result was 1280x960. You can imagine how 1280x960 looks on a 1600x1200 display: ugly. Obiously openSUSE 12.1 can not automatically configure X correctly, while in 11.2 the correct configuration could be done easily. Next I copied the xorg.conf file from 11.2 to 12.1 but this did not make any change on resolution, it is still 1280x960. Now I am stucked, what should be the next step to correct this? [opensuse] How to handle samsung /dev/mfp for scx-3400 printer/scanner

Today I bought a Samsung SCX-3400 printer/scanner, and tried to install it with Samsungs UnifiedLinuxDriver. This driver tries - by default - to install the printer/scanner under /dev/mfp4. However, my system doesn't have a /dev/mfp, and therefor attempts to print or scan have no result. I suppose printer and scanner should be directed to a printer- and/or a scanner device, but I wouldn't know how to handle this. Anyone a hint? Hi everyone, Ok, I have been scouring the lists and the forums to try and make sure I get this right, but something weird has come up, and I haven't seen the same problem. This is on my laptop only. I did not do a clean install, but an upgrade from 12.1 (I know this is inadvisable, but I tend to fiddle around). The upgrade actually went pretty well, and of course it kept grub legacy. The only thing that was hard was that when I would do "suspend to disk" on closing the lid, when I would go to power back up, sometimes the screen would hang and not boot up. I would end up hitting the reset button. It never did this in 12.1, and since I have 12.1 still running on another partition, I checked the graphics driver to see if the hang and blank screen were due to a bad graphics driver. It was exactly the same as on 12.2. Grub2 installed, and when I went to reboot, I got the black grub2 screen with the menu options, etc. On boot to 12.2, the first thing that pops up after the grub menu is this: Loading Linux 3.4.6-2.10-desktop ... Loading initial ramdisk ... Then it hangs right there whenever I go to boot up. I have to hit the reset button on my laptop and reboot. Sometimes I go through the cycle of hitting the reset button 2 or 3 times before it will go past loading the initial ramdisk. Sometimes 10 or 15 times. Sometimes not at all. If I boot into Windows 7, and then restart, it usually does not hang after grub. Any ideas on what to do next? It is a pain to have to always hit the reset button when I am booting up. -- G.O. I'm trying to configure my two monitors correctly with the nvidia driver. The card is a GT520 which drives the monitors correctly using the nouveau driver: Display-1: DVI-I-1 1280x1024@60Hz Display-2: VGA-1 1280x720@75Hz Unfortunately, when using the nvidia driver (from the nvidia OBS repo version 304.43) although the DVI connected monitor is configured correctly, the VGA connected monitor is configured to run at 50Hz which results in the desktop extending beyond the physical screen. The nvidia-settings application only gives 50Hz as an option for that display. I would be grateful for any help or suggestions... [opensuse] Desktop mime rules for a directory

I doubt this is possible. But I have to ask: I would like to add a MIME type / application link for a directory based on the possible existence of files with a certain extension in that directory. Or even the existence of a specific named file in that directory. The reason is that these directories contain data from a measurement session of one of our applications. At the command line (where I live), the directory name can be given to access various files in the directory. One need not enter the directory or use the directory/filename. When one needs to operate on hundreds of such directories, this is a real bonus. I would like a similar feature on the desktop. Right-click on the folder, and the various app options are presented. But these should only be presented if the directory is 'one of ours'. The directory name itself is not something I can play with. So I cannot make a rule based on that. I know that some other OS detect, say, a folder if MP3s. If you open the folder, it instead starts the MP3 player. Not exactly what I would want personally. Hello, I installed the 3.6 Kernel update from download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/stable/standard/. I'd like to check, if the symlink protection of Kernel 3.6 is working. The symlink protection seems to be enabled by default. Anyway, I can use symlinks in /tmp like before without much limitations. [opensuse] How to repair Grub2 after upgrading Windows?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop, which used to dual boot Windows Vista and openSUSE. Windows is on sda1 openSUSE / is on sda2 OpenSUSE was upgraded (new installation over pre-existing 12.1) to 12.2 abot 2 weeks ago, which installed grub2 as the bootloader. All was well, both openSUSE and Windows Vista were offered in the boot menu. Today I went through the same process with Wndows, from Vista to Windows 7. The upgrade option didn't run, so I chose the new installation, which did. Now, of course, the machine boots straight into Windows 7, with no boot menu choices. I have used the openSUSE 12.2 installation disc to boot to 'Rescue System', and followed the instructions given here http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2012-04/msg00690.html namely: 1. Boot to rescue system 2. mount /dev/sda1 /mnt (suppose /dev/sda1 is your / partition) 3. mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev 4. mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys 5. mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc 6. chroot /mnt 7. /usr/sbin/grub2-install --force --skip-fs-probe /dev/sda1 8. reboot Obviously, I changed sda1 to sda2, and confirmed with ls -l that I had mounted my openSUSE root partition. Step 7 resulted on the following warning: File system 'ext2' doesn't support embedding. Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged.. Installation finished. No error reported. The reference to the 'ext2' filesystem is a hangover from grub legacy days when I formatted /boot as ext2 (no need for journalling in /boot, I'd read somewhere). Can anyone suggest a solution to this dilemma? I'm not averse to typing stuff in to the command line, but I don't know much about grub legacy, and even less about grub2, so I'd appreciate a step by step guide. When I open up a konsole, the prompt looks like this: george@linux-ix5h:~> It used to look like this before I upgraded: george@linux-aw90:~> I missed the section during the install of where you assigned the name thing of your computer, so my installation program automatically picked "linux-ix5h", which is fine. I have no objection to it doing so. The problem, though, is, how do I change it now? I think it would be nice to change it to something that looks a little less random. I went into yast and user maintenance, but I could only find where to change the "george" part, not the "linux-ix5h". By the way, what do you call that part anyway, the part that is after the @ symbol? -- G.O. I no longer have sound on my computer, since upgrading to openSUSE 12.2. According to Yast Sound Configuration, I have the sound built in on my Asus motherboard and it uses the snd-intel8x0 driver. However, according to the mixer Sound and Video Configuration, there is no sound card. Lsmod shows "snd_pcm 109282 3 snd_intel8x0,snd_ac97_codec,snd_pcm_oss". Any idea how I can get sound going? I was just looking in /proc/<process> as 'self' non-root. I was looking at the schedtool and the scheduling algorithm in place for each process: cd /proc for i in [0-9]*;do schedtool $i done --- Which ran fine except it didn't tell me what processes .. and numbers weren't really what I wanted, so I thought why not list the exe. I thought to add "ls -L $i" in the above to each line -- but get permission probs: ls: cannot read symbolic link 1/exe: Permission denied Running as root, of course, no prob. This is 'normal' behavior as I have come to expect, BUT, in paying attention to the permissions on the symlink: lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Oct 2 09:10 exe The permissions don't agree with what the kernel is doing. I'd expect to see something similar to the permissions on the dir itself like: dr-xr-xr-x 8 root root 0 Oct 2 03:43 ./ But if hiding the executable name was really wanted, then I'd expect to see something like lrwx------ 1 root root 0 Oct 2 09:10 exe or lrwxr-x--- 1 root root 0 Oct 2 09:10 exe or lrwxrwx--- 1 root root 0 Oct 2 09:10 exe (of course I find it unlikely that root could actually write to this var... maybe it can and immediately that process would start a new program, but I sorta doubt it. Now just to be clear -- 'exe' is pointing (in my case) to lrwxrwxrwx 1 0 Oct 2 09:22 1/exe -> /sbin/sysvinit and as a normal user I can do an "ls" on that file: -rwxr-xr-x 1 47200 Jun 21 00:49 /sbin/sysvinit So it is not the permissions on the target file that are causing the access denied message -- it's the ability to read the link which claims I should be able to do so: *** Shouldn't the permissions in the link reflect the permissions being given? *** I'd surmise there is special code that ignores the listed permissions and creates it's own permission/access code to that information and it's hard coded to only allow root or the process owner. But WHY? Why not use the permissions on the links in /proc to achieve the same effect?? Is the special code *Needed*? Wouldn't relying on the general access mechanism work just as well? Also, it would be easier if access was controlled in the DACL, or umask, to allow diverse security policies -- like enabling someone to look at what executable someone is running without having to have root access -- which would seem like a good thing. So I'm guessing this is a bug in the kernel and that suse didn't add code to create this inconsistency -- but thought i'd ask if 1) anyone knew if opensuse changed the defaults in this area 2) anyone knew why it was this way (why inconsistent -- why 2 separate access mechanisms, one of which (the standard perms DACL) is ignored 3) why this particular bit of information was protected this way when things like 'cmdline' is not? Or why mountinfo+mounts but not mountstats??? Why should memory, scheduler cgroup, limits latency (and a bunch of others) be readable but not io statistics and mount statistics??? (as well as the links 'cwd,exe,root').. It looks a bit random? Does someone know why or how these things got this way? Should they stay? Why should top be able to give memory &cpu stats to normal users, but not io stats? (for example). Hi all, Today I backed up some data on my external Lacie drive containing a Toshiba MK1059GSM disk. In order to avoid repeated load cycles, I used the "hdparm -B 255 /dev/sdc" command as I ever did. For the first time I obtained a strange message from SG_IO: orodruin:/home/ori # hdparm -B 255 /dev/sdc /dev/sdc: setting Advanced Power Management level to disabled SG_IO: bad/missing sense data, sb[]: 72 00 00 1d 00 00 00 0a 09 0c 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 APM_level = off Note that on oS 12.1 I never seen this message when using this disk, message that is appeared now with oS 12.2. Then, in order to spin down the disk before unplugging it, no message from SG_IO when I ran "hdparm -S 2 /dev/sdc". Should I file a bug against kernel for this? I have used Wireshark for several years and often used filtiers to limit what is caputered. However, I don't see how to get filters to work in Wireshark 1.8.2. In earlier versions, I'd select options and choose the filter there. With 1.8.2, there's a separate area for selecting filters, but it doesn't seem to work. The options panel no longer has a place to select filters. As I mentioned in the thread on "No sound in 12.2", for historical reasons I'd avoided using pulseaudio and had fallen back to alsa. This works well in 12.1 and 12.2, except that I couldn't get the gstreamer backend in Phonon to work properly; only VLC. Desktop is KDE 4.9.x; sound card is a PCI-e X-Fi Titanium. Having followed the other thread I've now installed pulseaudio in 12.2. And it works very well with the gstreamer backend (though not the VLC backend) - except for one thing. I simply cannot persuade ann .mp3 sound track to play in the "Advanced Slideshow" in either Digikam or Gwenview. It does play with alsa sans pulseaudio using the VLC backend, but not with pulseaudio using either the gstreamer backend or the VLC backend. And the oddest thing is that it does play if I hit "Preview" on the soundtrack page of the advanced slideshow setup - but not when I start the slideshow itself. Obviously there is something I'm not doing right, but I don't know what it is and it's driving me nuts. I've looked all over the place for plugins or other modules I might have missed, and I've asked elsewhere including a Digikam mailing list, but without result. So now I'm asking here.... Hi All, Having just upgraded to openSUSE 12.2, I have gotten most of it to work well so far. There is one application I use which is important to my work, called Evernote, and I run it in wine. In 12.1, it would synchronize with the server; in 12.2, it does not synchronize. I posted this on the forums and was directed to this bug report: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30598 In the bug report there is a lot about adding packages and attachments, or installing an earlier version of openssl. Apparently openssl needs to be .98 or earlier, or there is a particular patch to install. The problem I am facing now is, how do I install a patch for a windows application run in wine? If so, do I need to make a whole new package and build it, and then install it as a patch for wine using zypper install? I don't know yet how to make packages using rpmbuild, but I had a 15 minute crash course the other day in the beginnings of how to do that. So I am ready to rise to the challenge, but I want to make sure I am on the right path. I don't need step by step instructions here - I can try and figure that out through searching and reading. However, I would like to know if I am on the right track - to use the .diff attachment and build a patch for wine using rpmbuild, then install that patch and see if it solves the problem. I am running wine-1.5.6-2.1.2.x86_64 in openSUSE 12.2 on my laptop (see below). -- G.O. Hello all, I am trying to connect to a streaming internet radio on this website, http://febc.ph/ and firefox says a plugin is needed to display this content. It is the 702 DZAS radio on the right hand side. I searched all over and cannot find anywhere how to get firefox to tell me which plugin is needed. I suspect it is some kind of windows audio but I don't know for sure. When I click the firefox prompt to install the missing plugins, it can't find them and can't tell me what to install. Since we switched to cronie in openSUSE 11.4, cron has been writing logmessages with the name of the executable in upper case, where as the previous cron daemon wrote in lower case. I opened: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=780237 Vojtech (the maintainer) doesn't think this regression should be fixed, and closed it as WONTFIX. I think this regression should be fixed, even if nobody else has noticed it in 11.4 and 12.1. Does anyone here have any thoughts on the matter? Hi All, Please accept my apologies for asking a generic BIND/rsyslog question here, but I've searched on and off for months, now, how to solve this problem to no avail. I have a server that was writing around 300 MB a day to /var/log/messages in just these types of entries: TCP: Peer 0000:0000:0000:0000:0000:ffff:b4b5:3097:55344/80 unexpectedly shrunk window 1944967302:1944991761 (repaired) The log entries went away and /var/log/messages' size dropped to normal after named was configured to stop listening on IPv6 port 53 thus(*): - - - - - 8< - - - - - listen-on-v6 port 53 { none; - - - - - 8< - - - - - [*] if IPv6 were implemented at this data center, I'd have simply configured BIND (9.8.2) to utilize IPv6 Per, in another thread several weeks (months?) ago, you predicted this method would have unwanted side effects ... does this look like the problem you were describing? I just recently received a bounced e-mail stating (particulars obfuscated): "The mail system <?????.?????(a)?????.edu>: connect to mx?.??????.edu[????:??:???:???::??]:25: Network is unreachable" I'm gathering the intended recipient's mail system is IPv6 only? What is the core problem here, and, how do I resolve it? Or else how do I suppress all these 'unexpectedly shrunk window' messages so the server doesn't stumble every time the logs are rotated? I noticed that my imap server (dovecot) was not running so I checked with chkconfig and found that it was set to "off". I tried to change the status using chkconfig and got the following error message. insserv: Forward service request to systemctl returned error status : 256 Is chkconfig now obselete? How is it possible to manage services so that they autostart? Is there an alternative to chkconfig for systemd? I am using openSuSE 12.2 and KDE 4.9. Any help would be appreciated. (Please note that I have started the server manually using systemctl, so I'm not asking about that. I am asking about setting the system so that when I restart, the imap server is started automatically without me having to manually start it.) After a big update the VGA mode was automatically changed to 1289x1024, 16 bits. Nice mode (31a) but too small for my eyes. Changed it to my standard mode 1024x768 and because I had the choice, I choose the 16 bits resolution (317). This resulted in some strange effects in e.g. kmail. Instead of one color it showed three to four stripe in strong colors. Changed it on good luck to mode 316 , 1024x768 15 bits and the display is as it should. Started to google on VGA modes and bits but did not learn why the 16 bits at the high resolution was okay and why it gave problems at a lower resolution. Could somebody tell me in plain English what I did and why I had the strange effects. Should I have known the right VGA Mode? Why do I have choices for modes if they give problems? Is there a method to find out what the best bit setting is for my screen? What should have happened if I would choose the 24 bit Mode? After a reboot one of the first messages I get after the booting process starts is: doing fast boot creating devices nodes with udev udevd[97]: Error running install command for bttv_skip_it After this info the booting process is without problems. How and where can I get rid of this udev problem? Hi I can't run java applets. Chromium tells me that IcedTea is out of date and takes me to the IcedTea wiki. I see that 12.2 icedtea-web is the latest version available in the wiki (The Yast changelog is last dated 12 Sept.). Firefox just sits there (Carlos tells me that the error message is in plugins somewhere). The openjdk on 12.2 is also the latest I can find both in 12.2 and Factory. Anyone else? Hello: Sorry, but this is going to be a little bit long. I have the following problem in my openSUSE 11.2 system: I have an ADSL internet connection where I have login name and password for authentication. For the connection I created a DSL device and a provider in yast. The DSL device is configured as: PPP Mode: PPP over Ethernet, Activate device: On hotplug, and Enable device control for non-root users via kineternet option is enabled. The network card is configured in yast as follows: Network Settings/Overview window: name: xxx ethernet controller, IP Address: none device name: eth0 started automatically at boot Network Settings/Global options window: Traditional method with ifup enable IPv6 DHCP Client Identifier: left empty Hostname to send: AUTO Change default route via DHCP: not checked Network Settings/Hostname-DNS and Routing windows: default values Network Card Setup/Address window: No IP Address is (for Bonding Devices) is selected everything else is off/blank Network Card Setup/General window: Activate device: on hotplug Assign interface to firewall zone: External zone Network Card Setup/Hardware window: device name: eth0 After setting everything as above and clicking OK the network is set up, and the ADSL connection is made automatically. Network works well. I can hang up connection and can reconnect using kinternet. In kinternet/check connection everything seems to be OK, own address, name server address etc. But the problem is: When I turn the computer off and boot it again, the network is not getting configured, and I can not make the ADSL connection to the network. Hello list, I want to make a script which builds static html pages from a directory of images. 8 images per page. Using tables. I was thinking that making the import and convert part, in a separate script, using gphoto2 and Image Magick respectively. The current script works with a template that is only the table row (<tr> </tr>) definition. *script* for one in *.JPG; do sed s/image/$one/g gallery.tmplt >> gallery.html done *template* <tr> <a href="image"> <img src="small_image" alt="image"/></a> </tr> What this yields is a page full of the name of the image as a link to the large image. I assume this behavior with the "alt" field being shown is because there is an underscore in the "img src" field. So I would like to correct a few things: + have the template transcription stop at 8 images, to start a new page. + have the sed command able to interpret a template with multiple image locations, so that I can have an entire web-page as a template and not just the table row section (see below for clarification). + have the underscore behavior changed--- although I had this working so this problem is minor. :clarification: The idea of the loop occurred to me because I have a list of images "----for one in *.JPG; do--------" from which I want to pluck images. "--------sed s/image/$one/ gallery.tmplt >> gallery.html---" So that when the script encounters the word (regex) it then replaces it with the next in the list. Where I have the difficulty is when I have multiple "image" instances in the page. I think I may be able to get the desired behavior with another loop, which increments "n", something like this; ------n=0 ------n=n+1 ------sed /n/s/image/$one/ gallery.tmplt >> gallery.html Because I would like to replace all occurrences on a line with the current image. This would be useful for me to understand because I think I could implement the same simple technique to count the images per page. Using 12.1 with KDE3.5. When I start YaST2 it spawns multiple instances of SCIM manager and scim-panel-gtk. I count anywhere from 10 to 80 or so which starts slowing the system down with loads of 30 and higher. Sometimes multiple instances of SCIM are also spawned when starting konqueror, firefox, thunderbird. What is spawning so many instances of SCIM? [opensuse] What's going on with firewall rules in 12.1?!?

Using 12.1. I want to add two, simple, basic firewall rules to deal with an ISP proxy injecting javascript into every web page fetched. I tried doing the usual and customary "service iptables save" after inserting the rules manually which returned the error "service iptables does not exist" or whatever. Looking further, I find that rc.iptables has been removed and substituted with some bizarre sysconfig abstraction that apparently creates firewall rules from scratch from a legion of files every time the system starts. And apparently, the way this thing is set up, I cannot do a simple append to this conglomeration of sundry files to get the rules I require. Further, Yast is completely useless for this purpose. As a bonus this nyoo thang, or whatever it is, is undocumented. Why do we have to do things the hard way? What is the rationale behind making firewall setup more difficult? When saving a file or adding an attachment in Seamonkey, the file list window shows hidden directories, as well as regular ones. Since I rarely have reason to use those directories when transfering files, is there any way to stop showing hidden files and directories? In Konqueror, Alt+. toggles showing hidden files/directories. [opensuse] Dual monitor config (12.2 GeForce GT520)

I am trying to set up dual monitors on my newly installed 12.2. I have a GeForce GT520, using the nvidia driver (x11-video-nvidiaG02 304.43-2.0.1 from obs://build.suse.de/home:sndirsch:drivers) The monitors are attached to VGA-0 and HDMI-0 (output of xrandr below) The monitor on VGA-0 displays correctly, but with the screen on HDMI-0 the desktop extends beyond the top and bottom of the physical screen. Previously, this screen was running correctly at the same resolution (but as a solo monitor on a different graphics card.) I think the problem would be related to the fact that in the previous set up, that screen was running at 60Hz, whereas now it gets automatically set to 50Hz. Any assistance would be gratefully accepted ... Hello all, I have a system with a Smart Array 5i/532 with OpenSuSE 11.3. Now i want to upgrade this to OpenSuSE 12.2, but i have a problem. I have noticied from another system with OpenSuSE 12.2, of a module change, from cciss to hpsa, and a change from /dev/cciss to /dev/sdx. Now, my questions are basically 2: - When i do the upgrade of that system, will be used the hpsa module? It will be used for an Smart Array 5i/532? - If the hpsa module will be used, and the hard disk device change from /dev/cciss to /dev/sdx, what i can do to make the system bootable? I need a detailed list of operations to be done in this case, the last time it is happened the only solution i have found is to re-install all the system... [opensuse] No interaction with Android over bluetooth

Hi folks. I came across the odd behavior of my bluetooth system on 2 laptops -- HP Probook 4330s running Opensue 12.1 x86_64 and Asus x44 with 32 bit Opensuse 12.1. I have 2 Samsung smartphones, Galaxy S GT-I9000 and my wife's Galaxy Mini and any attempts to transfer data over bluetooth in both directions between my laptops and any of these handsets are failng with such error messages: 'Connection reset by peer (104)', but previously these devices were successfully discovered for each other. In other hand with my old Nokias (6220 Classic, N810) the laptops' bluetooth works just fine without any issues. I guess it's not a matter of Android but Suse due the fact that I can normally transfer files from my desktop (Fedora) to the same Samsung handsets over USB bluetooth dongle. Additionally to transfer issue I have a faling tethering with Samsung too. My system logs don't contain any useful info at least I couldn't find it out. Is anyone here who can tell me if it bug and could it be reported previously. Googling it haven't brought any mention for such behavior. I will appreciate any suggestions for solving this trouble. Personally, I've never liked dolphin and preferred konqueror. However, since running an update, konqueror no longer works. I get the following error message. There was an error loading the module Sidebar. The diagnostics is: The plugin 'konq_sidebar' uses an incompatible KDE library (4.9.2 "release 511"). [opensuse] OS 12.2 KDE and reboot options

Hi, I just upgraded my OS 12.1 installation to OS 12.2 on my dual boot (Win 7 and OS) system and everything went smoothly. The bootloader seems to still be GRUB 0.97 while I expected 2.0 but that is really not a big deal. What I have lost (and miss) are the options that I used to get when I clicked long on the "restart computer" button. I used to see the list of the GRUB partitions displayed and had the choice to select what partition I wanted to boot back in (for example reboot in Win7). I have "lost" my Opensuse. I have tried to upgrade from 12.1 to 12.2. After the upgrade was done, I got an error, and that I had to: RPM --rebuilddb. No I can`t log in, it seem that the graphic system are broken. I can log in to consol, but no KDE start up. J have both KDE 4.9.1 and Gnome 3.2.1 in openSUSE 12.1. When I start KDE session Nautilus is also started, sometime as file manager, sometime as process. I must kill Nautilus. [opensuse] sound problem after reboot

After every reboot I end up with all sound volumes reset to zero. Can be solved by using yast but this setting does not remain after a reboot. So I would like to find out where I could remove the resetting of the sound volume or which file I could edit to fix the volume settings. I have this problem since 11.4 and have never been able to find the culprit. [opensuse] Lenovo G470 intermittent Boot problem

Hello openSUSers, First of all this post could be classified as Out-of-topic since it is not related upon operating system issues but just on hardware or possibly system firmware, but I would like to try if somebody could provide useful suggestions regarding a very strange problem I am facing out on my Lenovo G470 notebook. Whenever I try to boot the machine after it was powered off since several hours, it fails repeatedly, I see just the power-on and battery led on, no screen bios information at all nor hdd activity, just a blank screen. By insisting several times to power on, then suddenly it boots showing bios menu and finally the operating system went initialized (Windows 7 in this case). Sometimes happens that after few minutes the system shut-down spontaneously and reboot itself but normally after this random behaviour it stays on stable and working perfectly until I power-off. I already opened a maintenance ticket with Lenovo and I am ready to deliver my notebook to authorized center for repair but I would like to know if somebody could guess which kind of failure may be causing this issue. [opensuse] OpenSuse 11.4 and bad Java installs

Hello, I've have wrecked my Java build on my 11.4 box and I am having a hell of time getting it to work properly. After installing and uninstalling each of the following; jre-6u35-linux-x64-rpm.bin, jre-7u7-linux-i586.rpm, jre-7u7-linux-x64.rpm, ...,I finally installed openjdk and its corresponding plugin to finally get some java capabilities in my browsers, Firefox, etc. However, I still get javascript errors on many webpages and I am almost at wits end. I would like to start from scratch by uninstalling all instances of Java and clean up /etc/alternatives, or whatever needs to be done to get a nice clean, properly linked java install with the browser plugins working properly. Could someone point me to a link or howto that can show me how to accomplish this? [opensuse] OT: Using dd to upgrade a win ssd drive

This is sort of OT: I have a dell Inspiron Mini 9 (910) running Win Xp with a 4GB SSD drive (was Linux) I'm in the process of upgrading it to a 16GB SSD drive (been purchased). Can I use "dd" to go from the SSD drive to a USB drive then to the new SSD drive ? And still boot ?
