[opensuse] Is it possible to install QT 3?

I'm testing 11.4, but I have a problem. I still use a recto-verso Kodak scanner, and it's software requires QT 3. I don't seem to be able to find anything else than documentation about QT 3 There will be other requirements (lique mono elements) but for the time being QT 3 is the show stopper. [opensuse] 11.4 BASH - tilde expansion - isn't expanding when used in variable? Help?

Guys, Here is a strange bashism. I want to check that ~/tde/tgz exists or I want to create the directory. So I do: # set tgzdir for output of tarballs tgzdir="${2:-~/tde/tgz}" [[ -d "$tgzdir" ]] || mkdir -p "$tgzdir" To my surprise, it created a directory named '~' in the pwd: scr/~/ scr/~/tde/ scr/~/tde/tgz/ Huh?? I know I could use $HOME instead, but I want to understand what rule I'm violating. Seems like I've successfully used this in the past. What say the gurus? -- David C. [opensuse] incomplete shutdown

Hi, My desktop PC (with openSUSE 11.4) does not shutdown completely at times. This is very worrying as one of the steps missed is the unmounting of file systems. Then of course on the next boot-up the file systems are found unclean. Unfortunately I have also lost data because of this. I started collecting evidence about the problem by making video recordings of shutdown messages. I compared a complete shutdown with an incomplete one and found that the messages up to "Running /etc/init.d/halt.local" were present in both videos (in a different order). Then the following messages were missing from the incomplete shutdown: Turning off swap files Set Hardware Clock to the current System Time Unmounting file systems none has been unmounted /dev/md6 has been unmounted /dev/md7 has been unmounted Shutting down MD Raid Stopping udevd: After that both videos finished with the same messages: Sending all processes the TERM signal... Sending all processes the KILL signal... The system will be halted immediately. The above two videos were recorded about 2 hours apart, first the complete then the incomplete one. I did nothing special in between - used digiKam, checked my e-mail etc. I did not update my system or changed any system files. Any ideas how to track down / fix this problem? [opensuse] CD/DVD spin-up and file manager?

Is there any way to stop the spin-up of the CD/DVD drive unless I explicitly access/mount that drive? I've got a DVD "parked" (not mounted) in a DVD drive. Every time I open my file manager, the DVD drive has to spin up before I can use the file manager. This adds a huge delay to the file manager startup time. As well, if I have the file manager open, but in the background, and the DVD spins down (stops), I have to wait for it to spin up again it I happen to try to do anything in the open file manager. Yes, I could simply remove the DVD from the drive, but... this is not always easy since the computer case is somewhat inaccessible at times, and periodically I will need to mount the DVD. System is openSUSE 11.4 with KDE 4.6.3. It's not a terribly big deal.. just a minor annoyance that I'd like to "fix" if possible. [opensuse] Xorg crashes randomly

Hi, I have several problems with X11 on Opensuse 11.4. There were several problems from the beginning but last week Xorg started to crash randomly and the system got unusable. I have an ThinkPad T43 with the following graphics card: Chipset: "ATI Radeon Mobility X300 (M22) 5460 (PCIE)" (ChipID = 0x5460) The problems were: 1. I have a display attached with 1920x1200 pixels. However Opensuse always starts with 1400x1050 even if I start in a docking station with closed lcd display. To switch to 1920x1200 I have to switch off the LCD with the following command: xrandr --output LVDS --off; xrandr --size 1920x1200 2. After switching to 1920x1200 motif application show strange artifacts when they are big enough. I do not know when the problems start but I see problems with windows that are smaller than 1400x1050. The new problem is: 3. The Xorg server crashes randomly. It happens for example when I press Alt+F2, or when I start an application from a remote site, or when I open a drop down menu in amaraok. I see no pattern here. I think this is a software problem with Opensuse 11.4 because: - Opensuse 11.3 showed no problem on the same hardware - I borrowed a T43 from my coworker, switched the hard disks and got the same crashes on his hardware. Does anyone have an idea what is going wrong and what I could do to resolve the problems? [opensuse] encrypted partitions: aes kernel module not loaded on boot

Hey! I am using 11.4 and an encrypted home partition that gets mountend on boot. It is encrypted with aes. My Intel Core i5 supports the AES instructions set. However, on boot, no aes kernel module is loaded at all. Thus, only the built-in aes is used. The "detection" for the correct aes module works: karl:~ # modprobe -v aes insmod /lib/modules/2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop/kernel/arch/x86/crypto/aesni- intel.ko insmod /lib/modules/2.6.37.6-0.5-desktop/kernel/drivers/crypto/padlock- aes.ko WARNING: Error inserting padlock_aes (/lib/modules/2.6.37.6-0.5- desktop/kernel/drivers/crypto/padlock-aes.ko): No such device IIRC, with previous openSUSE verions, the WARNING above was shown on each boot, too. Now, it is not anymore. Thus, I assume that the "modprobe aes" command was completely removed from an init script or something like that. However, I am not quite sure whether this is a bug or feature request. [opensuse] Does gnome 3 really suck that bad?

It's Friday, I haven't tortured myself in a while so I thought I would start gnome and see if it had improved any in 3.0 -- bad mistake... How in the hell do you use this thing?? It took me a while to figure out how to "log off" (under the cute little "MS Messenger" looking icon with your name on it). I'm sure gnome 3 is great and all, but it just blows me away at how all the recent desktop development is supposed to be an "improvement", yet not even be able to find the darn dialog to change the theme anymore. I take it gnome 3 is "not yet ready for use?" -- David C. Hi folks, I need help in mapping the escape key to a new key or key combination on my wife's laptop. The escape key stopped working completely, but the rest of the keyboard is fine. Using opensuse 11.2 - 64bit, KDE 4.3.5 I went to Desktop Settings, ---> system settings -> input actions I added a new action and selected the new input key combination. But that's as far as I get, I can't figure out how to designate the ESC key in the "action" tab. I googled, but can not find out how to designate the ESC key. Pointers would be appreciated.
