[opensuse] Does gnome 3 really suck that bad?
It's Friday, I haven't tortured myself in a while so I thought I would start gnome and see if it had improved any in 3.0 -- bad mistake... How in the hell do you use this thing?? It took me a while to figure out how to "log off" (under the cute little "MS Messenger" looking icon with your name on it). I'm sure gnome 3 is great and all, but it just blows me away at how all the recent desktop development is supposed to be an "improvement", yet not even be able to find the darn dialog to change the theme anymore. I take it gnome 3 is "not yet ready for use?" -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

My understanding is that it is no longer possible to change the theme in gnome 3. I read an article where a gnome developer was alleged to have said they removed it because they had spent so much time and effort on the default look, and they wanted to have a unified look on all gnome installations everywhere, Could have been a misquote I suppose, but it fits my understanding of the gnome development mindset Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Indeed. The main difference is that KDE developers say "wait for it, it will come", while gnome developers say "nah, you don't really want that, trust us". It has been the main difference between gnome and KDE ever since gnome got the HIG in early 2.x versions. Do not even think about comparing it with KDE. There are far more features in KDE now than there ever was Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Anders Hi You can install the gnome-shell user theme extension... themes available at present are minimal.

Yes, it's Firday. Let's not start the "kde not ready for use" extravaganza again. Please. Argue good points, bad points and suggest improvements using bugzilla and openfate wo the derogatory comments and slurs. I looked in vain for any mention of KDE, but it seems to me Patrick's is the first. So what is he prattling on about? It should be CLEAR that David is asking a legitimate question here. If you right click the Gnome desktop, you get a minimum of options. You will note that my message came 4 minutes after the message you claim was in reply to me. You will also hopefully note that Patricks email is in a different branch of the thread. You will also, I hope, note that my response was to an email from James Knott, two minutes after a previous email from James Knott in which he tried to pretend that the gnome changes had anything at all to do with KDE, and to this I pointed out that there is no comparison. If you need help with learning to read email headers, feel free to ask. Anders -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

So you have no memory of the endless quibble when kde 4 arrived? And what would cause you to look for memtion of kde? I mentioned it in context.

very clear, in a helpful non-demeaning mode. you have a point? -- (paka)Patrick Shanahan Plainfield, Indiana, USA HOG # US1244711 http://wahoo.no-ip.org Photo Album: http://wahoo.no-ip.org/gallery2 http://en.opensuse.org openSUSE Community Member Registered Linux User #207535 @ http://counter.li.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If I'm correct he just means the type of conversation and it does not matter whether you put a KDE/Gnome or whatever new application into that "xy not ready for use" or "does xy really such that bad?" bit. It's always the same people that bring this kind of topic to the mailinglist and it's always the same people that take part in that conversation with the same attitude towards new things and development they don't regard as sensible.
It should be CLEAR that David is asking a legitimate question here.
IS IT? (rethoric question) It would have been legitimate if he did not (again) mix negative opinion with a legitimate question. Something like "Gnome 3, some question" would have been sensible, asking how to change themes etc. not "does it really suck that bad". Just think about how you would react if somebody came to you and started a conversation about a/your project with the question whether your project really sucks that bad. You would certainly assume that he is just interested in some sensible criticism and only intends to ask sensible questions… IMHO emails with that kind of beginning/subject belong on a personal blog and not on a mailinglist whose purpose is to answer questions and not to start flamewars, blame projects etc. instead of asking wheter xy sucks. That's not a sensible question. I guess that's clear, isn't it! Sven -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Gnome #3 is rather nice - and heaps easier to use than Unity. How did you install it? From this URL: http://www.gnome3.org/tryit.html ? This is a LIVE DVD of 11.4 with Gnome #3 (Note *DVD* 'cause it is just a bit too large for a CD) and you install it in YaST2 where the Installer is located.
