[opensuse] OpenSuSE 12.1 shutdown

Hi, I've installed the above version in my Lenovo z60 laptop and none of the commands to shutdown the PC don't work: from KDE, from console, etc. The sustem turns down all the services and unmounts the file system, emits the halt to the console, but doesn't turn off the PC. I also, was the first time, that I made an actualization, from OpenSuSE 11.4, and not a installation from scratch. [opensuse] Uninstalling a package doesn't remove all the traces?

HI, I am not able to understand the uninstallation process of openSUSE, if I uninstall a program, its traces are still remained in the system. Example: I installed Chromium Web Browser from Yast. The package name is: "chromium" (without quotes). After that I uninstalled the same from Yast. Further this option was also checked: "Yast -> Software Management -> Options -> Cleanup when deleting packages", so that it cleans even the traces while uninstallation of a package is done. After uninstalling "chromium" from the Yast, I run the following command "sudo zypper rm --clean-deps chromium" to further clean the traces, now I reboot. Amazingly when I run the command "ls -a", I find the traces of the same uninstalled package ("chromium") in the following hidden directories which are ".cache" and ".config" which are in the users home directory. [opensuse] rc... and systemctl

Hello :-) one of the best trick in openSUSE is the "rc..." links to the init files. Pressing rc [TAB] lists all the services available. right now, on 12.1 this works even if systemd is working. I wonder if this will be kept in the future? I would like it. [opensuse] In search of rpm supplying "gdk_display"

I do have a bridge program (gib) which I used for quite a few years, and which worked well under 11.4. However, I tried to install it under 12.1, but I can't get it to work. Giving the command gib results in ./gib: undefined symbol: gdk_display Anyone a suggestion how to solve this problem, where to find the reference to gdk_display ? " I had tried SUSE on another Desktop system which also had 2 versions of UBUNTU, Fedora and Debian (both 32bit and 64bit software). Suse installs just fine, but assumes it is the only Linux on the system, and replaces the MBR with one of it's own, ignoring the other Linux systems. This mbr action during installation blocked the access to the other Linuxes." [opensuse] Newbie has problems installing 12.1 with LAMP

Hi, I am new to OpenSUSE, but have come from a different Linux Distro. Twice now I have tried installing OpenSuse 12.1 on a clean partition (formatted as part of install, containing both / and /home) Everything goes well, I install nvidia propriety driver and firmware for tv card which kaffine operates well. I do a full update through yast. I am using KDE. The problem happens when I install the Lamp-server packages/patten. This seems to go OK, but the services are not turned, so I go through Yast and activate apache2 and mySql. I can now browse web pages at 127.0.0.1, including a sample php page I created. The problem happens when I next reboot. When I log on I get a dialog box saying: "Warning: Cannot open ConsoleKit session: Unable to open session: Failed to connect to socket /var/run/dbus/system_bus_socket: No such file of directory" I can log on, but functionality is limited, eg network, internet or dvb card. Google suggests I should edit my /etc/rc.conf file, but my system does not have one (I don't think it is part of OpenSuse 12.1) I have had a look through the documentation etc and cannot find anything to help me. Can someone suggest what I should do to restore my system? ~If I have failed in finding some direction on this problem, can you please point me at the article and tell me how my search skills failed! Hello SuSE people, Fairly mew install of 12.1 with KDE3. 99% of the time when I boot up 12.1 it ends up with a log in commaqnd. But it says it has reached runlevel 5 as per the twp lines abobe the login command. They are: Naster Resource Control Run level 5 has been reached. The next line says: Skipped Services Run level 5 Now I can login as a user and do a startx and it brings up KDE but not everything. No sound, etc. But, if I login as root,and do an init 3 and then an init 5 it brings up the greeter login screen and when signed in as a user everything is normal. Is it possible that this has saomething to do with the new booting scheme 12.1 is using? All suggestions, ideas welcome. Of course. But it gets tiring when you want everything to be that way. The .bashrc solution makes for a consistent language change, whether starting a GUI app via a mouse click, or a character app in a GUI console. It also ensures that programs started by other programs get the setting. [opensuse] Poor 12.1 performance

I recently installed 12.1 on a system that has run 11.0 well for years. It's an Asus A8N-E mom board with a Nvidia GeForce 7300 GE video card & 3 GB of memory. The KDE desktop is sluggish, sometimes extremely slow. It might take several seconds from when I click on something to when I can see it change. In top, I see Xorg is taking significant amounts of %MEM (up to about 30%) and %CPU (sometimes over 75%). Sometimes the system isn't too bad, others, almost unusable. I have these packages installed: nvidia-computeG02 - NVIDIA driver for computing with GPGPU nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-desktop - NVIDIA graphics driver kernel module for GeForce 6xxx and newer GPUs x11-video-nvidiaG02 - NVIDIA graphics driver for GeForce 6xxx and newer GPUs xorg-x11-driver-video-nouveau - Accelerated Open Source driver for nVidia cards.
