I've been having fun and games at home. Short story first.
I have a fairly old system and one of the SATA drives is failing so I
bought a replacement. The system didn't see it at all so I rushed out
and bought another drive (Xmas!) but it wasn't seen either. Google told
me it was a problem with the SATA chip on the motherboard, so I borrowed
a SATA adapter. It kind of worked but gave lots of bus errors. I tried a
couple of other adapters with similar results. I tested the drives and
they're perfect. I read about power issues with SATA so I disconnected
everything I could but that made no difference. So I started looking for
a new system.
Then comes the weird part. I've been running openSUSE 11.2 and have also
tested Ubuntu 10.04 with similar results. Last night I tried Knoppix
6.4.3 and apparently everything worked perfectly. I still need to do
more testing but maybe my old system can live a while longer.
I'd be interested in any views people have about the prognosis.
OK, now here's the details:
The mobo is an MSI K8M Neo-V, which has two SATA 1.5 Gbps ports
controlled by a VIA VT6420 chip (it has a broken design that can't see
more recent drives).
The failing drive is a Seagate 1.5 Gbps. The new drives are both Samsung
3 Gbps SATA drives; a 1 TB HD103SJ and a 320 GB. The smaller drive has a
jumper to force 1.5 Gbps speed, while the larger one uses a software
utility.
I borrowed a PCI adapter based on the Sil 3512 and I've bought one based
on the VIA VT6421A. Like all PCI SATA adapters, they're limited to 1.5 Gbps.
The output from lspci (with the Sil controller) looked like this:

Oh and the kernel versions are:

knoppix 6.4.3 2.6.36
Has some kernel or driver update improved SATA handling significantly?
Cheers, Dave

Sorry to bring this one up again, but my addressbook in Kontact has
disappeared again.
Googling for opensuse 11.3 KDE 4.5 kontact missing address book failed to turn
up anything useful, but I remember there was a thread about six months ago on
the same topic.
I'm using 11.3 with KDE 4.5 from the Release repo. Looking in System Settings
I see that Nepomuk (akonadi?) is running, but not Strigi. The mysql server is
running.
I have had some problems with forgotten passwords in mysql recently, which
necessitated a few starts and stops (and shooting it in the head) of the mysql
server (see another thread in this list), and it may be that which made my
addressbook evaporate. When I try to add an addressbook from the File menu,
there is a bewildering array of choices, and with the most obvious local ones,
you are asked to select a file or folder in which to find the addressbook.
I've also tried stopping and restarting Kontact, but that didn't help.
Can anyone help, before I install Thunderbird (which I don't want to do, as I
quite like Kontact and its family)
Bob

In a current thread, the OP says that when his laptop machine returns from
Suspend, his Wi-Fi connection is restored automatically in a few seconds.
Mine doesn't behave that way, and I wish it would. If the difference
between the two behaviors is not something beyond my control, what causes
it?
The laptop is Dell Vostro with Intel 5300AGN wireless chip. It is running
oS v11.2.

Thanks a lot for all your replies. I'm going to install openSUSE on

In the light of the Egyptian Inet turn off and the threats that other govs
either have or are lokking into such abilities do we have something along the
lines of Daihinia or can we setup our boxes to behave like that ie a
mesh network .
Could be usefull

Can OpenSUSE get the NTP server address via NTP? I don't see any option
for enabling this and I also have a public server configured in the NTP
settings. If possible, I'd prefer to use the DHCP provided server when
available. I have looked at the DHCP offer, with Wireshark, and can see
the NTP server address is included.

OSE 11.2 with K3B 2.0.1
I was attempting to create an audio CD from a MP3 file usiing K3B and
received the following error:
MP3 Audio Decoder plugin not found.
K3b could not load or find the MP3 decoder plugin. This means that you
will not be able to create Audio CDs from MP3 files. Many Linux
distributions do not include MP3 support for legal reasons.
Solution: To enable MP3 support, please install the MAD MP3 decoding
library as well as the K3b MAD MP3 decoder plugin (the latter may already
be installed but not functional due to the missing libmad). Some
distributions allow installation of MP3 support via an online update tool.
The other popup indicated another alternative, namely converting MP3 to
WAV or some other format K3B understands:
Unable to handle the following files due to an unsupported format:
You may manually convert these audio files to wave using another
application supporting the audio format and then add the wave files to the
K3b project.
I have the following K3B modules installed:
k3b
k3b-codecs
k3b-lang
kde3-k3b <== Do I need these if I am using KDE4?
kde3-codecs
kde3-lang
Do I need other modules? Repositories?
If there are any articles or threads in the forums covering this, please
post the links.

ello,
I have just installed Suse on a computer and I would like to paste
into Open Office, the "autocorr" files that I use on another computer
so that my automated corrections are taken into account by the new
system.
Would anyone be able to tell me where the autocorr directory is in
Suse? Or would anyone be able to tell me how to find such a directory
in Suse?
Thank you in advance,

I have a 16GB usb stick running 11.3 on my laptop after the hard drive failed.
It works fine with the latest kde and openoffice. Remarkable.
A replacement hard drive is not possible.
My question is about how long the stick will last. It looks as if the limit is
around 10 000 writes. How long is that at eg. 24/7 for opensuse?
