[opensuse] How to install behind a proxy?

Hello, I tried to install opensuse11.3 behind a firewall. The installer for older releases used to offer the possibility to deactivate automatic configuration (directly after accepting the license). When this option was checked, it was possible to configure the proxy (and hostname and more things) before the online-update was run. This "deactivate automatic configuration" button seems no longer to exist. So, how am I supposed to configure the proxy before running the online update without this option? BTW: Older releases used to offer a shell on virtual terminals. This was convenient in the case of problems. This also don't seem to be available any longer. [opensuse] Opensuse 11.3 KDE not running anymore

Hi, I have OpenSUSE 11.3 with a system that hangs when run in Normal Kernel mode; does not hang in Failsafe mode. In trying to fix that problem I booted with the Kernel with the option nomodeset. As of that boot and another KDE will not run from the KDM4 display manager. I am really stuck with this machine and openSUSE. Help will be greatly appreciated. [opensuse] How to align for 4kb sectors?

I've installed a new RAID array in my home server and the disks are using 4KB sectors instead of the traditional 512 byte sectors. How do I properly align the partitions to this disk? YaST partitioner shows "cylinders" and I can not come up with a formula to convert cylinders to sectors. My understanding is since 8 x 512 = 4096 (4kb) all I need to do is ensure that my partitions are aligned to multiples of 8 sectors. -- Med Vennlig Hilsen, A. [opensuse] Is ntfs-3g safe?

I've installed suse and Windows xp on my wife's new computer; she's not very confident of her ability to deal with computers, and she has to use xp for work, so she insists on her xp at home. I find that ext2fs doesn't work any more because suse, like most (all?) other distributions has gone to 256-byte inodes rather than the original 128-byte inodes, and to get back to the old structure means backing up my entire 150G home partition and reformatting it. But ntfs-3g, which ships with suse, claims to read and write to ntfs partitions, but writing is disabled by default because it's "unsafe". I've installed ntfs-config, but haven't had the courage to use it because in the course of finding out why I could no longer use ext2fs (which I've used in the past), I ran across several statements that writing under ntfs-3g could corrupt ntfs partitions, and that's why it's disabled by default. But the most recent of these statements is two years old in an ubuntu forum archive. Is ntfs-3g still risky? I'd really like to use it to put information into my xp account so when my wife preempts her computer (struggling with xen, unfortunately), and when I need engineering resources not available under linux, I don't have to juggle flashdrives and such. I'm about to buy a Lenovo Thinkpad T510 w/ the switchable graphics (Optimus). Any hardware I should avoid (e.g., WiFi adapters, fingerprint reader, Bluetooth)? Any advice on make switching between the Intel integrated graphics and Nvidia discrete graphics easy? [opensuse] Display just broke on me after an update

OK, I think nVidia just broke my laptop on me. I had noted that the openGL screen savers had stopped running so decided to look into why. Googling and poking around I came across an nvidia configuration tool so thought I would give it a try... nvidia-xconfig Didn't give me any kind of feedback so who knows if it worked ok or not... I also happened to do an update on all packages from the repositories, that are newer than the ones I have, hoping for a fixed driver or something. So who knows if the update broke something... sigh.. Anywise, after rebooting, I can no longer get past the init 3 level. The GUI desktop at init 5 fails to come alive. So can some kind guru help me get my poor laptop back up on it's feet? Appreciate it.. Marc.. Hi, When "Starting the Software Manager" during the 'Load Configured Repositories' stage the following message appears. Warning There was an error in the repository initialization. The software Manager window then loads. Doing a 'Refresh all Repositories' is successful. After any kind of a change and selecting 'Accept' the Software Manager window disappears and the following Error message appears. No software is installed. This error message also appears after other Yast2 tasks, 'Network Settings', 'Hostnames' however, with these the changes do take effect. [opensuse] Screen resolution file?

Hi, Running OpenSuSe 11.2 and a 11.3 on separate hardware both with KDE and would like to find out which file I can edit using my trusty Kate or kwrite text editor that would control the screen resolution. I currently need to use krandrtray to set the resolution from the system auto default of 1680x1050 to a more respectable/readable 1024x768. If I logoff or power down the machine, I need to visit krandrtray each time to set the screen resolution as it defaults to the auto setting of 1680x1050 when I logon again. I have already Googled and looked at the mailing list archives and have not seen anything specific other than what I have tried already. What I would like to know is which filename, read by the OS on user logon, decides the screen resolution for that user. Can I edit the contents of this/these file/s using the Kate/Kwrite text editor? [opensuse] Wi-Fi after suspend

In a current thread, the OP says that when his laptop machine returns from Suspend, his Wi-Fi connection is restored automatically in a few seconds. Mine doesn't behave that way, and I wish it would. If the difference between the two behaviors is not something beyond my control, what causes it? The laptop is Dell Vostro with Intel 5300AGN wireless chip.
