[opensuse] How do I get my addressbook back?
Sorry to bring this one up again, but my addressbook in Kontact has disappeared again. Googling for opensuse 11.3 KDE 4.5 kontact missing address book failed to turn up anything useful, but I remember there was a thread about six months ago on the same topic. I'm using 11.3 with KDE 4.5 from the Release repo. Looking in System Settings I see that Nepomuk (akonadi?) is running, but not Strigi. The mysql server is running. I have had some problems with forgotten passwords in mysql recently, which necessitated a few starts and stops (and shooting it in the head) of the mysql server (see another thread in this list), and it may be that which made my addressbook evaporate. When I try to add an addressbook from the File menu, there is a bewildering array of choices, and with the most obvious local ones, you are asked to select a file or folder in which to find the addressbook. I've also tried stopping and restarting Kontact, but that didn't help. Can anyone help, before I install Thunderbird (which I don't want to do, as I quite like Kontact and its family) Bob -- Registered Linux User #463880 FSFE Member #1300 GPG-FP: A6C1 457C 6DBA B13E 5524 F703 D12A FB79 926B 994E openSUSE 11.3 64-bit, Kernel 2.6.36.90-desktop, KDE 4.5.3 Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz, 8GB DDR RAM, nVidia GeForce 9600GT -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Does this mean that the Addressbooks list is empty, or that there is an addressbook there but it show no contacts when selected?

The status or any password resets of the system mysql instance has no effect on your KDE addressbook. Uninstalling the packages bodily would, but that would deinstall Kontact too.

The default folder for new addressbooks is the Local Contact type storing data in ~/.local/share/contacts. The default file for old (pre 4.4) addressbooks is ~/.kde4/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf. These should be used with the 'VCard file' type. If you add a new addressbook of either of these types, do your contacts come back? Failing that, are there contact files in ~/.local/share/contacts or a vcard file in ~/.kde4/share/apps/kabc ? Thanks, Will. That was the information I needed. I think I'll delete all those std.vcf files in the other folders to avoid getting confused by them again.

The Personal Address book is repopulating itself as I write :). It's strange that I couldn't get it to find this resource yesterday, but then I've logged out/in since then. Oh well, it's working now.
HTH
Indeed it did.
