[opensuse] Patch management for OpenSUSE

Hello, I am wondering since some time how others cope with patch management on OpenSUSE Clients, when you have a bunch of PCs in a network. Somebody who can recommend a open source tool to cover the basics (e.g. a tool automating updates with zypper over ssh or something similar)? Thanks! [opensuse] Text entry trouble

SuSE 11.2, KDE 4.3.5 I did a fresh install of SuSE 11.2 a few weeks ago and have been banging my head against walls since. I am experiencing text entry problems. 1. TAB key acts strange sometimes. - In konsole (2.3.1), sometimes tabbing to complete a command does nothing, other times it works like I am used to (displaying a list of possible completions). When tab completion works, the typed characters are displayed as normal black characters on white background. When it doesn't work, the character colors are reversed. When not working properly, if I type and extra space ' ' character, and then backspace one character, then tab completion works. One really odd thing is that I can run several instances of konsole, and tab completion will work on some and not on others. - In gnumeric (1.9.13), tab sometimes will not go to the next field unless an extra space is typed at the end of the field data. Having to type an extra ' ' space character is a recurring theme here. - In gnucash (2.2.9) tab acts the same as in gnucash. In both cases, this never happened in 11.1. - In firefox (3.5.9) tab "sometimes" acts the same as gnucash and gnumeric (above). Also, getting firefox to list possible URL connections from history sometimes requires hitting the ' ' space key. At other times, firefox will display possible completions, but will not tab select them until a space key is pressed. The same behaviors occur in common drop box screens, such as google's search text entry; again a seemingly random behavior. These problems show in many other app's. 2. Spell check and text entry is strange: - In abiword (2.6.8), thunderbird (3.0.4) and emacs (23.1.1) there are several strange things "SOMETIMES" strings are not echoed from the app, but are instead displayed in a small text box that pops up somewhere on the monitor. The text box appears for each string and goes away after the string is completed. "As you type" spell checking is not performed. This problem is really annoying. "SOMETIMES" the strings are displayed on the app while typing, but spell check is not performed until after the string is completed. SOMETIMES "as you type" spell checking works as in previous versions of the OS. The string is underlined as soon as it doesn't match anything in the dictionary. I've tried to google these problems, but the search strings are so common that there are way too hits to be of use. I'm sure these aren't really random happenings, but I haven't been able to see a pattern yet. Any help? [opensuse] zypper and multiversion(kernel)

Since four version of kernels I run it in zypp.conf with "multiversion=provides:multiversion(kernel). That gives me a full functioning kernel with updates which will have a look at all kernels. At this moment I have for kernels from which to choose and I think it is time to delete some of them. [opensuse] KDE4.5 good impression...But

Hello listmembers, Recently I installed KDE4.5 onto my 11.2, by following opensSUSE guidance and I've been very well impressed of this new DE release. Now if I try a zypper ref; zypper up, then I notice several KDE packages available but since they come from different vendor (OBS instead of openSUSE) they went no installed. In these cases I know, I should limit the repos to "dup" with --repo, or --from switch, but wonder if doing so then I risk to broke something. [opensuse] ACPI regression from 11.2 -> 11.3 on GA-MA770T-UD3P

Hello, I'm hoping that some kind soul can help me diagnose what's going on here, or at least point me to another resource. Several weeks ago, I upgraded (first via zypper dup, then with a re-install) from 11.2 to 11.3 on a system with the above mobo. Since then, I've encountered all kinds of difficulties that I now believe to all be ACPI related. Note the the system had been very stable running 11.2, but I wanted the new Xorg driver for my ATI 4350 card so that I could take advantage of the accelerated driver and associated eye candy. Initially, I noticed network problems, and kernel messages in /var/log/messages with CPU#n suck messages. I've attached a snippet below. Aug 13 13:30:02 faramir kernel: [ 4331.903317] BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 139s! [swapper:0] I eventually noticed that *most* these included the rtl8169 in the call stack. After some Googling, with no luck, I picked up a used Intel 82545GM from eBay to replace the built-in RealTek - it's a better chipset anyway, right? Well, after this, the above error traces went away, but not all of the bad behaviors. Remaining were the very long boot times (10 minutes) and random system hangs (5-30 seconds). I discovered that any keypress (i.e Num-Lock) would "unstick" the system, I surmised by generating an interrupt. Since then, I've been trying to play with combinations of ACPI=xx APM=xxx and pci=noacpi. After many experiments, I've the only combination that I could find that would make my system run well is "apm=off pci=noacpi acpi=off" -- in particular, "acpi=off". I've tried other ACPI options, but, at least so far, to no avail. The main downside that I've discovered to "acpi=off" is that my 4 CPU cores (AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 925 Processor) are pegged at 2812.342 MHz, with my CPU fan running full-tilt to keep 'em cool. I've also attached the output of 'lspci' and 'dmidecode'. Let me know if there's anything else that I can provide, as well. Just for the record, I'm certainly *not* a newbie, and I'm willing to experiment and/or debug. Thanks in advance, -Nick

[opensuse] I want SCPM back!

I am disappointed to discover that SCPM is not anymore on OpenSUSE. Networkmanager is NOT a replacement. I need to do heavy changes to configurations as I change networks. I am using the packages from 11.2, but I really WANT SCPM back. I hope that if we are many, scpm packages will be released again. [opensuse] Lost touchpad/trackpad

Hi, While trying to get display to a projector to work in openSUSE 11.3 I ended up having to shutdown the laptop (improper shutdown via power button). Ever since I've lost the trackpad, i.e. mouse pointer no longer moves when using the trackpad. How do I get it working again? Help is appreciated. [opensuse] My thunderbird has stopped working

Hi, My Thunderbird has stopped working. I see a white empty left and right panel. Both empty. Many menues do not work. Log out, log in of the session doesn't help. However, it works alright, it seems, if I use -safe-mode. I do not see errors in an xterm, except: cer@Elessar:~> thunderbird -safe-mode *** nss-shared-helper: Shared database disabled (set NSS_USE_SHARED_DB to enable). which I think is not related.
