All,
Intentional top post / new thread because the main question seems to
have been lost in the clutter.
Is there a way, via zypper, I can easily see which repo yast2-mail is
currently using, and which one has the updated version?
ie. It seems a vendor change is needed and zypper up is therefore
simply telling me it is skipping that package. Now I want to dig into
that a little more.
fyi: I assume I could launch yast and look at the versions tab, but
I'd like to handle this via zypper since it seems to be getting better
and better.

I did an update of a 10.3 system to openSUSE 11.2. I used the 11.2 DVD
to do this (not zypper). As part of the update, I let the updater add
the on-line 11.2 updates. No KDE repos are added. Just the 11.2 update
that the install adds.
For the most part all went well. Except that the desktop looks crappy,
even for a user created after the update was completed. The most obvious
problem is that the panel at the bottom is black, and the text on it
black. Or, when leaving the desktop, the window is black with black
text. ICONS are OK. There is something that is obviously not to plan.
I also tried deleting the $HOME/.kde and $HOME/.kde4 directories, hoping
that they would be better when the user logs in again. Nope. Same
badness. Maybe this is not enough to remove to force regeneration of the
user settings?
Oddly, the root user has a correct appearance. No other user.
I am guessing that when the system was updated, the default settings
that a KDE user should get have not been properly updated. I do not know
where to look for this, if that is even what it is.
I am guessing that I could fiddle with a user's settings and get it
looking good again. However, this is not really an option for this
machine. We are trying to see how well it works to let users log with
Windows Active Directory verification (which works so very nicely!). I
would have to do this for each user after they create their login. Umm,
no...
I did follow many of the discussions about settings problems in kde 4.
Most of those seemed to be about messing up old settings, and seemed to
be more of an issue in older KDE 4 releases. I sort of thought the KDE
in the 11.2 update directory had most of this sorted out. I use it on my
11.2-from-the-beginning system and have no complaints.
I am guessing the damage was done in the initial KDE install in the 11.2
upgrade. But I might be wrong.
Where to start?

Guys,
Doing a quick backup of config files (like .bashrc) from within bashrc and I
need to find a better way to find the total number of files matching a glob in a
directory. Currently I'm using:
total=$(ls $budir/bashrc-* | wc -l)
to determine how many copies I have in my bashrc.tar.bz2 backup + the new one I
just copied to the backup location so I can determine the number to delete to
just save the last 3 when I tar it up again.
The ls | wc combination works fine, but I don't like the fact that there is a
pipe in the middle of it. If there is a cleaner way to do it, let me know.
P.S. Yes, I've added an alias too many times by doing "alias xzy='whatever'
>~/.bashrc" -- thus the quick backup from within bashrc :p Of course if I would
just remember >> I'd be just fine....

Heard somewhere enthusiastic comments about the web browser Midori.
Went to Yast and found it there. Installed it and wanted to have a look
at this small web browser. Found it back in the menu and started it.
And now I need help :)
First info I received was:
-----------
gcjwebplugin error: Failed to run/etc/alternatives/../../bin/java.
For more detail rerun "firefox -g" in a terminal window
-----------
Looked in /etc/alternatives/../../bin/java which did not help me much.
Running firefox -g gave me Firefox and following message:
-----------
nss-shared-helper NSS_USE_SHARED_DB enable
-----------
Could not find nss-shared-helper. No idea where that would be hidden.
Finally I ran midori in konsole which gave me following output.
----------

Anyone had any luck getting "Kindle for PC" to run on OpenSuse via
WINE ?
There are several internet posts that reference a minor "tweak" to wine
(essentially changing the winecfg to windows98 ) and "Kindle for PC"
supposedly works fine. I've done the the winecfg tweak on both my
OpenSuse 11.2 desktop and my Ubuntu laptop with similar results.
The "Kindle for PC" program appears to install, an Icon shows up on the
desktop, but when the icon is clicked - it tries to launch but crashes.

i have a strange thing happening these days. when i start vmware, my
keyboard layout gets messed up. for example, i am typing this message in
evolution. i do not get caps, or various other characters as the shift
key seems to have been disabled. this happens when i start vmware.
oddly, the apps in vmware windows xp do get proper characters. i see
this problem in kde. i cannot check the system console because
alt-ctrl-fx also no longer work. stopping vmware does not correct the
problem. i need to reboot. ok, i guess there is a command that could
probably reset the keyboard. but why is this now happening
the last statement was a question, but i can't type a question mark.
this happens every time i run vmware. i think it started at some time
when kde was updated. i am not certain. except that it was not when
vmware was updated.
anyone else have this odd behavior
i have a swedish keyboard. adding the keyboard layout selector to the
kde system tray does not help. some keys change as expected. but the
shift key ans alt-ctrl seem gone until i reboot.

Has anyone started seriously testing and tinkering with openSUSE on
SSD drives?
The prices are dropping and I'm thinking it's time to move over to SSD
for my main drive - I'm thinking I'll do this around the release of
11.3. I've been doing some reading, and see a lot of conflicting
info... in one place I see notes that you must set noatime and you
cannot(should not) put the swap on the SSD drive.... among many
others... like running a cron job to clear or write memory on a
regular basis (something to that effect was discussed here, but
without any clear reason why you'd need to so this or what was
actually being doen.... at least not that I saw.
Most of the rest of the information is at least 2 years old and mostly
focuses on panic over the limited read/write cycles on SSDs... one
camp says no problems, just install as usual... the other says no
way.. disable this and that, and put home on a reg drive, and and and.
So.. what's the concensus here? Just install as normal now? Treat
the drives as a reg drive? Or handle with care and assume I'm
venturing into fail country?

Hi all,
I'm thinking about buying a HP computer (Pavilion P6310de). It comes with
Windows 7 and I want to add SuSE to it. Can anyone tell me good or bad
things about HP computers? Do they play nice with Linux?
Thanks,

Hi all,
I have a few systems here that are OpenSUSE 11.1 and 11.2 machines.
For some reason, while SSH into them works just fine SFTP does not
work at all. Looks like the SFTP subsystem in the SSH server
(/usr/lib64/ssh/sftp-server) never gets activated properly. Has
anybody run into this? How do I fix it?
Thanks.
Boris.
