[opensuse] vmware and keyboard layout

i have a strange thing happening these days. when i start vmware, my keyboard layout gets messed up. for example, i am typing this message in evolution. i do not get caps, or various other characters as the shift key seems to have been disabled. this happens when i start vmware. oddly, the apps in vmware windows xp do get proper characters. i see this problem in kde. i cannot check the system console because alt-ctrl-fx also no longer work. stopping vmware does not correct the problem. i need to reboot. ok, i guess there is a command that could probably reset the keyboard. but why is this now happening the last statement was a question, but i can't type a question mark. this happens every time i run vmware. i think it started at some time when kde was updated. i am not certain. except that it was not when vmware was updated. anyone else have this odd behavior i have a swedish keyboard. adding the keyboard layout selector to the kde system tray does not help. some keys change as expected. but the shift key ans alt-ctrl seem gone until i reboot. -- Roger Oberholtzer OPQ Systems / Ramböll RST Ramböll Sverige AB Krukmakargatan 21 P.O. [opensuse] openSUSE on SSD?

Has anyone started seriously testing and tinkering with openSUSE on SSD drives? The prices are dropping and I'm thinking it's time to move over to SSD for my main drive - I'm thinking I'll do this around the release of 11.3. I've been doing some reading, and see a lot of conflicting info... in one place I see notes that you must set noatime and you cannot(should not) put the swap on the SSD drive.... among many others... like running a cron job to clear or write memory on a regular basis (something to that effect was discussed here, but without any clear reason why you'd need to so this or what was actually being doen.... at least not that I saw. Most of the rest of the information is at least 2 years old and mostly focuses on panic over the limited read/write cycles on SSDs... one camp says no problems, just install as usual... the other says no way.. disable this and that, and put home on a reg drive, and and and. So.. what's the concensus here? Just install as normal now? Treat the drives as a reg drive? Or handle with care and assume I'm venturing into fail country? Do they play nice with Linux? [opensuse] sftp-server problem on OpenSUSE 11?

Hi all, I have a few systems here that are OpenSUSE 11.1 and 11.2 machines. For some reason, while SSH into them works just fine SFTP does not work at all. Looks like the SFTP subsystem in the SSH server (/usr/lib64/ssh/sftp-server) never gets activated properly. Has anybody run into this? How do I fix it? Thanks. [opensuse] BASH prompt - change prompt on the fly -> shorter -> longer -> shorter

Guys, I keep my prompt set so I always have the time and can simply copy/paste the prompt as an rsync or scp or sftp source/destination. example: 21:43 nirvana:~/dt/e17/themes> So if I need to transfer something to/from any host it is just a simple copy & middle-mouse paste for: rsync -uav nirvana:~/dt/e17/themes . One issue that arises is that prompt length grows quickly as you drill down a directory tree, especially if you are su'ed root: eg: [21:55 alchemy:/usr/share/enlightenment/data/themes] # So a solution was to create a small function in .bashrc and short alias to accomplish what I needed. Since in the path statement, '\w' displays the full path while '\W' will display only the current directory, toggling the path required nothing more than re-exporting the path with the 'w' or 'W' set as needed. The function that worked - (note all case statements are on a single line): SetPrompt() { case $1 in w) export PS1="\[\e[0;37m\]\A\[\e[1;34m\] \[\e[1;34m\]\h:\w> \[\e[0m\]";; W) export PS1="\[\e[0;37m\]\A\[\e[1;34m\] \[\e[1;34m\]\h:\W> \[\e[0m\]";; *) echo -e "\n ${0##*/} [w,W] for 'full' or 'current' directory shown in prompt -- try again.\n" >&2 return 1;; esac return 0 } Then the efficient aliases used for 'SetPrompt w' or 'SetPrompt W': alias spw='SetPrompt w' alias spW='SetPrompt W' If you use different prompts for root and regular users, then just adding a test for the $UID allows you to set the appropriate prompt. Does anybody else recall something like a 'beautify path' option that would shorten the path to no more than 3 directory depth displayed starting at the current dir and working back up the tree? As long as we are on prompts, here is another super time-saver that takes you back to the prior directory with a short alias that your fingers are already over: alias cdl='cd $OLDPWD' Next time you change directories and need to change back, just 'cdl' Enjoy :p -- David C. [opensuse] Suspend to RAM doesn't work

Hello, I have opensuse 11.2 on Thinkpad R60 with latest KDE 4.4.3 packages... Few days ago suspend to ram stopped work. It locks screen and nothing else when I click to sleep (in KDE power management plugin)... var/log/messages contains only: Entering suspend. [opensuse] Novell Client for Linux 2.0 sp2 sle11 i586 on openSUSE 11.2

I have installed the RPMs in novell-client-2.0-sp2-sle11-i586.iso (downloaded from Novell), as well as CASA and libbfd on an openSUSYE 11.2 system. When I log in to KDE, I get a NCL icon in the system tray. When I try to do something with it, I get this in a popup window: Description : Cannot scan Connection References. Error:NWCCScanConnRefs: Code : FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFB Build : 1.0.0 File : ncpConnectionRefScanner.cpp Line : 79 Repository Version : $Revision: 2371 $ Then I can proceed to the NCL menu. However, login does not work. I fill in all the usual details and I get this message: "The system could not log you into the network. Make sure your name and connection information are correct, then type your password again." I use this exact same information in the same machine from Windows XP running on VMWare, and that works fine. So I know that the values are correct and that the machines are available. [opensuse] building rpm packages and automatic dependencies.

Hello, I need build some packages but I'm unable to understand how to override automatic dependencies. For a package like haproxy which depends of libpcreposix0 I specify a requires tag containing libpcreposix0. However find-requires adds libpcreposix.so.0()(64bit) as a dependency and finally the installation halts to request the library instead of showing the required package.
