Guys, For those using 11.0, Dominique Leuenberger, the compiz maintainer, has built the brand new compiz 8.6 for 11.0 and put the rpms in repositories/X11:/Compiz/openSUSE_11.0/ It works great. The only current package that hasn't built with 8.6 is the compiz-plugins-unsupported package. Additionally, there is not emerald built in that directory. I'll see if I can find out how to build the emerald packages. In the mean time, go download 8.6 if you are interested, test it, and provide feedback to Dominique (get his email from his Novell user account or mail me privately). [opensuse] 11.0 Screensaver lockup

Hi, Using KDE with oS 11.0 on a home LAN connected thru a KVM Switch. The box is a file/mailserver that is also currently being used as a workstation until I get a LAN connected PC functioning on 11.2. I have Solar Winds (GL) as a screensaver on KDE running oS 11.0 and if I am away from operating the machine and the screensaver kicks in, I very often cannot wake it i.e. the kb and mouse are locked up, not even enabling a change into a vt(Ctrl-Alt-F1). The only solution I have is to warm reboot the machine by depressing the reset button on the case. The filesystems are recovered OK, thanks to ext3, but it is a real pain to have to open the apps I had open before I left the machine i.e. Thunderbird, KWrite, a konsole, Firefox as well as four Openoffice documents I am constantly editing during the day. I would like to find out what is causing this lockup before I go and change screensavers and a whole lot of other settings. The machine has 2GB of RAM and a 1GB swap file which is hardly ever used. I do not think it is the KVM causing the issue as when I do switch back to the machine on the KVM the video type alters between digital and analog for a while before settling. I would like to check if the machine hardware/software is causing the lockup or it is the KVM, as I need to find a solution that allows the continued use of the 8 port KVM. Maybe a new video card or a change in the software via YAST is in order but I would like to find out where the error is first. I thought of looking at /var/log/messages but am unsure when/where i.e. in which file to look. Any ideas of where to look to find the problem, wheter it be hardware or software? Something is wrong with the docs for 11.2 Internet Installation. Starting from <http://en.opensuse.org/Welcome_to_openSUSE.org> I click on Download openSUSE 11.2 and am taken to <http://software.opensuse.org/112/en> where I click on the How to Proceed/Network Installation/Internet Installation link and am taken to <http://en.opensuse.org/INSTALL_Internet> which has some information but says "This article is transferred to the http://wiki.opensuse.org/SDB:Internet_installation . Please use new location for your contributions.". I click on that link and am taken to <http://wiki.opensuse.org/SDB:Internet_installation> which says "This page has been deleted. The deletion log for the page is provided below for reference. * 22:00, 5 May 2010 Spyhawk (Talk | contribs) deleted "SDB:Internet installation" ‎ (content was: '#REDIRECT SDB:Network installation' (and the only contributor was 'Spyhawk'))" So the only information available is marked with text to say not to use it, and the destination is a dead end. I'm not sure where the correct information is but clearly some links at least are broken. I use kmail together with spamassasin and bogofilter. I get this when bogofilter/spamassasin filters my mail: Content analysis details: (5.6 points, 5.0 required) pts rule name description ---- ---------------------- -------------------------------------------------- 2.1 FH_DATE_PAST_20XX The date is grossly in the future. Where do i fix the rule that fouls up? Most mails today are in the range 2000-2099.. So why does it trigger the spam deamon?? /Rikard Johnels

[opensuse] Playing DVD's with two drives

Hi, My recently installed OS11.2 has a problem playing DVD's. I'm using KDE as desktop-environment. When using kaffeine, I only can use one specific drive to play the DVD. When I put it in the other drive the dvd-disk is not found. Also, when I put some disk in a drive, there is a pop-up wich shows the name of the disk (besides the dolphin-icon in the tray). I can select some actions but with a video-dvd, there is no way to activate kaffeine, or another video-player. How can I add such an action ? [opensuse] Can I easily tile a desktop in KDE 4.3 (openSUSE 11.2)?

I sometimes run a number of related applications in a Desktop on KDE. I find myself tiling the desktop with these by hand. Is there a way to tile a desktop with it's windows in some easy manner? I have a vague memory of something in KDE3. But I cannot remember what it was. If it makes any difference, I am not using any desktop effects. So it would have to work without effects. [opensuse] SFTP performance degradation under Dolphin and Konqueror

Hello everyone, Something very curious has just been discovered here. We have a machine running SSH/SFTP server (a Windows XP machine if that matters). The network is a mix of 100 Mbit and 1000 Mbit ports (12.5 and 125 MB/s, respectively). When we use command-line sftp to transfer files we get decent speed (from 7 MB/s and upwards). When we use graphical interfaces on either OpenSuSE or Ubuntu (and it is the same whether it is Konqueror or Dolphin) the transfer speed drops down to no more than 2 MB/s and sometimes even to 500 KB/s. [opensuse] Zypper died suddenly!

I just tried my second "zypper up" after switching from "zypper dup" due to the responses to my "Changing zypper command" message of last week. Oops. zypper: error while loading shared libraries: libzypp.so.619: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Now, yast won't start (dbus error), zypper won't start. I suppose I might manually copy the library, if I knew where to get it and where to put it. Is there anything I can do short of reinstalling suse? I do have the opensuse ISO's on my hard drive, but since I haven't downloaded Krusader since going to 11.2, I don't know how to get into it. Even if the .619 version is there. Keep in mind that I'm a fairly advanced _user_ with no more SA skills than one learns by watching and asking questions on this list (embedded systems engineer -- wasn't even sure what "systems administrator" meant until subscribing here :-). Guys, Latest libtool put out for 11.0 fails to install because it looks for a file that isn't there. On 11.0 I have /bin/tar and no /usr/bin/tar. The libtool package install craters when it doesn't find /usr/bin/tar. I am looking for the correct program to install to allow the mic or line input to be mixed with system audio/sounds. I did try jack but can't get it to do anything. Not sure what to try next. [opensuse] IPv6 access over IPv4 ISP

I've been experimenting with IPv6 recently. Since my ISP does not provide IPv6, I used a gateway, which I tunnel to via IPv4 UDP. Clients for this are available for Linux, Mac, BSD, Solaris etc., even Windows. The service and client are free after you sign up. The Windows client is an executable and requires .NET. The rest have to be compiled for the appropriate platform. I have tried it on both OpenSUSE 11.0 (32 & 64 bit) and XP. It appears to work fine with both. One big issue is flash stuff, when zoomed in or out, does not respond to the mouse pointer location correctly, meaning where mouse is pointing at is not the actual location. Anyone tried chrome ? [opensuse] Problems with Samba and ip_forwarding with 11.2

Guys, Not sure what is going on with my new openSUSE 11.2 install, but I am unable to use my server any more as a router. I have checked and ip_forward is on, but not of my boxes are able to get out. I have searched the opensuse forms and I see that I have all the settings that everyone recommends but still no access. They other thing samba as stopped working altogether. [opensuse] Firefox 3.6 and KDE4.4.3 - looses window decorations

This is a weird one... it's happening on a computer I support (via phone). It's running openSUSE 11.2 with KDE4.4.3 (with compositing turned off) and Firefox 3.6.3. This morning the user started up the computer and opened Firefox... and all window decorations for Firefox are missing. Window decorations on all other apps tested are as they should be... this is only affecting Firefox. So far nothing I've walked the user through has worked to "recover" the lost window decorations (eg pressing F11, restarting Firefox). The only thing I haven't tried yet is renaming their .mozilla directory - not an easy task since this user is not all that experienced and walking through troubleshooting (via phone) at this level is not an easy task. I cannot duplicate it or trigger this on my own systems running virtually identical setups. While poking Google for info I came across this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/firefox/+bug/251617 (I haven't tinkered with localstore.rdf for the same reasons mentioned above.. phone support.. limited knowledge of the end user). The package is: VirtualBox-3.1-3.1.8_6139_openSUSE111-1.x86_64.rpm. According to the VB download page this is suitable for both oS 11.1 and 11.2. The system is 11.2. Installing VirtualBox is very easy, I have done it several times. This time, however, I failed to install the kernel sources first. I installed the sources after being reminded by the installation, and tried again, only to be told that VirtualBox is already installed. The answer to that seemed to be to uninstall it and install afresh, but instead I was told that there was nothing to uninstall. So it both is and isn't. Question: I'm guessing that it's desirable to get $RPM_OPT_FLAGS passed to the compiler, so how does one 'merge' this variable with $CFLAGS from the Makefile? AFAICT the flag that makes the difference is -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64 - which makes the binary use *stat64() rather than *stat() when files are 'large'. On 64bit systems I suppose everything uses *stat64() anyways, which is why the problem only surfaces on 32bit systems... ? Hi, Using oS 11.0 on a file/mailserver that is also currently being used as a workstation until I get a LAN connected PC functioning on 11.2. I have Solar Winds (GL) as a screensaver on KDE running oS 11.0 and if I am away from operating the machine and the screensaver kicks in, I very often cannot wake it ie the kb and mouse are locked up, not even enabling a change into a vt(Ctrl-Alt-F1). The only solution I have is to warm reboot the machine by depressing the reset button on the case. The filesystems are recovered OK, thanks to ext3, but it is a real pain to have to open the apps I had open before I left the machine ie Thunderbird, KWrite, a konsole as well as four Openoffice documents I am constantly editing during the day. I would like to find out what is causing this lockup before I go and change screensavers and a whole lot of other settings. The machine has 2GB of RAM and a 1GB swap file which is hardly ever used. I thought of looking at /var/log/messages but am unsure when/where ie in which file to look. Any ideas of where to look to find the problem? [opensuse] Konqueror & facebook incompatibility

Despite all the wonderful new browsers and dolphin, I still prefer konqueror for most of my browsing and file management. However, recently, I've been having problems with facebook. When I click on anything to do with facebook or just type http://www.facebook.com, an "open with" dialogue window opens up and shows type application/vnd.wap.xhtml+xml and the title for the windows is "m.facebook.com - Konqueror" Of course, I can make a konqueror association, or just select to open with konqueror as this point but if I do webpage look is all wrong. It looks nothing like how it used to or how it looks like in firefox. I'm assuming that it has a "mobile phone" or wap appearance. Does anyone know how to sort this out? Is it a bug? Does anyone else experience this or resolved it? Is it time to give up on konqueror as a web browser? [opensuse] reboot/shutdown occasionally fail

I have a problem that I occasionally see on all my systems, but is particularly nasty on systems which I remotely administer and cannot get to physically, easily. When I tell the system to reboot, something fails and instead of rebooting it effectively does what an init 3 would do, i.e. kills the KDE desktop and drops into the terminal console at a login in prompt. There is waits for input instead of continuing the shutdown process. I have fooled around with it at this point, logging in as root and then trying to issue a reboot or shutdown -r now command and I will see a broadcast message but at that point the system hangs completely and the only thing I can do is to physically reset or power cycle the computer. Thinking that a shutdown process may already be active, I have also tried shutdown -c now to cancel it, but always get a response saying that no shutdown pid could be found... Has anyone else seen this problem and is there a solution to it? I searched bugzilla but could not find any complaints about this issue, and since I am seeing it on several different computers, I find it hard to believe that I am the only one seeing it.. I am running openSuSE 11.2, x86_64 on all my systems. I also looked in /var/log/messages but see nothing that indicates a problem. Marc...

I upgraded to Seamonkey 2.0.2 a while ago and noticed an undesirable change in behaviour. If I'm reading a message and then switch to another folder and return to the message, I cannot delete the message, unless I actually click on the message in the thread pane or press "n" to move to the next message. Previously, I could just click on the open message and then delete. This appears to happen only with the 64 bit version and not 32 bit. It was a problem in oS 11.2, because I installed FF 3.6.x (some weeks ago) and ran into this. The problem was the openjdk Java plugin, what was too old to support FFs new API. I did not know about "update-alternatives --config javaplugin", but knew only "update-alternatives --config java", and this did not change the link for the java plugin. So only de-installation of openjdk seems to help. The packagers took care of the problem and provided a new version of the openjdk plugin, that works with FF 3.6.x now. [opensuse] Firefox v3.6.3 and Java

The machine is running oS v11.1 x86_64. After updating Firefox from v3.5.9 to 3.6.3 I find that the browser no longer supports Java, that there is no longer a button in the Preferences for enabling Java, and there is no Java plugin in About:plugins. About plugins refers me to mozilla.org, where I am advised to use the (non-existent) button to enable Java. This has to be a bug. As Java is important to me, my workaround is to use Konqueror, which is smart enough not to require a plugin for the purpose; Opera doesn't work either. http://linuxfreedom.com/Distros/ has a link to openSUSE 11.1 as the current download. Perhaps this should be updated. I am guessing someone at openSUSE should be the one to linuxfreedom.com as it is openSUSE's decision which version is available here. I've foung this link that can clarify for us what was the problem and how as fixed. [opensuse] Firefox v3.6.3 on 11.2

I am beginning from a fresh install of oS v11.2 (x85_64). The installed Firefox is v3.5.6, I want to update to v3.6.3. As I understand it, is is possible to do this through YsST, but what the repos are offering is 3.5.9. The installed repos are the usual ones plus Packman. Where is the new release to be found? Thing that perhaps my understanding is wrong, and it is not possible to install 3.6.3 in this way, I have also d/l the Linux installation tar.bz file from the Moxilla site, and expanded it.
