Maybe it needs a different command line. zypper list-updates does list repos, that's why I would never issue a zypper up without having seen the according list-updates first. Actually, I have a nightly cron job that does both zypper refresh (I have autorefresh set to false) and zypper list-updates. It proceeds to download the available to-be-installed packages. An email is sent only if output is not identical to the one that appears without any updates available, i.e., only if some error occurs or if updates are available. That establishes a notification of available updates, from which repositories, and uses our Internet bandwidth during the night when nobody else wants to use it. > It is easier for me to fire up YOU, go to selected repos, and tell it to install newer versions if > available. I have to update roughly 8 workstations and 2 servers. Not really that much, but it's not practicable to do that manually on each system. Maybe some words on my process are of interest: I share zypper configuration and packages cache via NFS to all SUSE systems. (That list-updates-and-download cron job is run only on one system, of course.) I wrote a script that does the announced update without questions on all systems; I can trigger that command via menu or keystroke directly from my mail client when I receive the email mentioned above -- which includes repository information. I won't do that if some critical package like kernel or X server is updated that has to be checked first; e.g., if VMware is still working afterwards. Those packages typically get locked, until I or somebody of my staff has time to do the check. There is also an automatic check that compares rpm packages and their versions over all systems and notifies us if some system differ from a reference system. (A list of all installed rpms is made as part of our nightly backups for each system, so that's very easy to do.) Yet another check determines that there exist neither .rpmnew nor .rpmsave files on any system. All in all a process where very few manual work is involved, but not too much automatism happens that could destroy our working systems. One gets an email at available updates (and only then) and one klicks the "do install" button if they're OK. Finished, maybe 5-10 secs for each update. Well, almost, maybe once per 4-6 weeks one has to lock a package and check its functionality or that it doesn't destroy other things before updating it. (Btw, on Debian that works even better, because apt has a hold feature that zypper is missing.) If something goes wrong, Nagios reminds me later due to failed checks. No manual checks either. My process is build around my opinion that humans are good for pattern matching ("is this list of updates one that we can probably install without problems?") and bad at issuing repetitive commands (calling "zypper up on all systems" or "list-updates once per day"). >> Very interesting. It's probably not the bandwidth, as long as delta rpms are used, so I suspect it's more a kind of policy thing. What I don't know is the policy difference between those two update methods: Do they carry the same amount of updates? Anybody can shed some light on this? [opensuse] Latest OpenOffice missing text in bottom status bar

When editing document, the status bar at the bottom has places for text to be located, but the various places are empty. A few of them will get text when I click on them, but most stay empty. Both boxes are similar enough and I haven't yet fetched anything machine or device specific. I have YAST set to keep all downloaded files in the zypper cache directories. I intend to copy that cache to the second box after installing 11.2 and then doing an online update. This might be the easiest way to get box #2 updated. I have only one high-cost link to use for updates. It's also by far the fastest link. The total disk space used for the updates is about 1.2Gb. Takes 7+ hours to download & install updates. I don't want to spend more time and money on downloading identical files a second time. In 9.3, if a file existed, YAST would not overwrite the files when doing an online update. In 10.2, it did overwrite already downloaded files. Or at least appeared to. Has anyone using 11.2 successfully tried to copy the zypper cache directory from one box to another? Does anyone know whether or not the existing files will be overwritten or deleted? Also, is there a way to download all updates _before_ installing them? [opensuse] boot time slowed by COMRESET errors on unconnected sata connectors

When I power up my desktop, it takes a while to boot. Upon hitting the ESC key, I see COMRESET messages on the screen for SATA ports that have no devices connected on them. The system eventually boots. Google search suggested some solutions like turning off ACPI, which I have tried to no avail. Today, I attached an external 1TB hard via the e-sata port on the motherboard and observed the similar error but then it eventually accepted the hard disk. fdisk -l shows /dev/sdc. Any idea what could be wrong and how to solve the problem? I have a Microdia webcam which finally works without much ado. I have tried out xawtv and luvcview and am not impressed by the quality of the images. When running Skype the picture is sharp and quit good. [opensuse] IPv6 DNS in OpenSUSE 11.0

I'm starting to experiment with IPv6 and need to set up DNS for IPv6. As I understand it, current bind versions support IPv6, but I'm not sure if it's enabled in 11.0. Is there anything I have to do to enable this? [opensuse] Problem with Sound

Hello List, i've got an new (for me new) PC and he is perfect. The only one thing, that don't really run is the Sound. I have the N68-S from ASRock and use the Onboard Sound. If i hear Music with Amarok, or watch a movie with vlc, and a Systemsound comes up, the Sound from Amarok or vlc is broken. If i go into Amarok and reclick the last File, i can hear it. By watching Movies, i must stop the movie restart it, and move in the timeline forward. Now i have experimented. The Problem comes if the Soundfile is ogg and by wav, too. I've runned alsa.info.sh http://www.alsa- project.org/db/?f=1452d284523178cdeb274f8aa3bbfb0079549ffb I'm using alsa as my Sounddaemon, and inside KDE i have Phonon with the xine Backend. Pulseaudio isn't installed. Has anyone an Idea? Hello listmates, In KDE if I started two instances of the same application (let's say, two instances of Digikam) even with the windows grouped I would see them labeled as "Digikam 1" and "Digikam 2". Not so with Gnome. Any way to make it the same under Gnome? Thanks. [opensuse] alt+f2 run dialog

I have run into a issue(s) with alt+f2 (the run dialog) When you type stuff into alt+f2, it search(s) as you type and of course suggest links, programs etc. 2 things 1) the run dialog becomes unresponsive, as you type stuff in. If you click on a suggestion, press enter or click on the x (to close run dialog) nothing happens. After a pause it will respond 2) After typing in a command and pressing enter, the command seems to not respond, until I do a alt+f2 again, for example type in yast press enter, nothing happens. Press alt+f2 again, the dialog box for root password shows up. The issue(s) above appear to be random, I've not been able to establish a pattern when it occurs, in most cases a logout / login will fix it, in some cases only rebooting will fix it as well. This started since I updated to 11.2 with kde 4.4.x, anyone run into this and have fix / workaround ? [opensuse] Using a Vodaphone UMTS stick with Linux/openSUSE

I've got a Vodaphone UMTS USB stick, model K3565-Z that I'm trying to get working with openSUSE and KDE4. I've done some digging, and figured out how to get the USB stick correctly identified as a Broadband device. Plug it in, wait for it to be identified as a ZEROCD device. Open Dolphin and Eject the device. Then it's picked up as a GSM Modem. dmesg reports it as a ZTE CDMA Technologies MSM >From there, I've been able to set up the device in the Network Manager... but that's about as far as I get... I'm not really sure what info is required in the NetworkManager... I can enter: - Number (known if I assume this is the SIM phone number) - Username (not used) - Password (not used) - APN (known, and set to web.vodaphone.de) - Type (set to Any, but can set to 3G UTMS) - PIN (known, provided with the SIM card) - PUK (known, provided with the SIM card) I've connected it in Windows... and it works there, so the device works. Hi all, Wonder why also root can't modify the server.conf file of this openvpn Gtk-Gui: whenever I attempt to execute modifications, both from interface or even directly into the conf file, by vi editor, then rebooting the gadmin-openvpn results in preserving the previous configuration. Same configuration changes unavailability is perceived also from the server.conf tab of gadmin: if you change some fields from Yes to No or vice versa, then these fields back to previous status. Ever since updating to >= 3.0 Firefox, I get some variation of the following: rcc@Athelon:~> firefox returned PAC proxy string: direct *** nss-shared-helper: Shared database disabled (set NSS_USE_SHARED_DB to enable). ** (firefox:10537): WARNING **: AT-SPI: Accessibility bus not found - Using session bus. /usr/bin/firefox: line 128: 10537 Segmentation fault $MOZ_PROGRAM "$@" rcc@Athelon:~> Of course, this is from a command line, From the 'kicker', I just get the 'bouncing ball" with no error message, after 30 seconds, it just disappears with no firefox, no message, no nothing. To restore Firefox, I have to reinstall, 2.5.9 or earlier, then, it works again. Installing any version later than that results in failure to start. This is with 11.3 factory. uname -a Linux Athelon 2.6.34-rc5-6-default #1 SMP 2010-04-22 21:18:20 +0200 i686 athlon i386 GNU/Linux Updated 6 May Processor is an AMD 64 running 32bit Dual core mode 2 2G memory, LVM AND RAID 5 (4 drive x 1Tb) + 3 1Tb drives in the / and /home LVM. This all worked in 11.2 and 11.3 M4 and earlier until Firefox was updated beyond 2.5.9. Reverting Firefox causes the segfault to disappear, reinstalling the 3.+ (latest) restores the segfault. Now the squirrel...I have a virtually identical machine int the other room with similar hardware and also running factory, that works! ... but NFS won't run on it!!! The MBd is MSI but the CPU is an AMD...the MBD on this one is an ASUS. I have another one (ASUS) that I haven't upgraded yet...production machine, but another ASUS running 11.2 with no problems. So, far, I'm not sure whether it is the kernel interacting with Firefox or Firefox itself. Any Ideas? [opensuse] Scanner help

Hi, I have an Epson Perfection 2450 Photo scanner. It's connected via firewire. It used to work fine with older Suses using xsane. Recently I installed OS 11.2 64bit. I had to install xsane 32 bit, because the "driver" is 32bit. When I setup the scanner via yast, all seems OK. But xsane can't detect the scanner. When I do scanimage from the command-line (probably with some parameters) I do get something on the screen (a huge number of garbage-charachters) and the scanner moves it's scanning head. What can I do to get xsane working ? Thanks for any pointers. Hello, I have a laptop here, opensuse 11.2, original install (not updated), KDE 4.33 I want to connect via WLAN I can connect to the modem (http://192.168.1.1) via WLAN, ping to the modem works as it should. But ping to other IP's outside don't work, it says "Network is unreachable". Where do I have do look for what to find out what's the problem? thanks for hints! [opensuse] Thunderbird 3.0.4 - Deleting Large No. of Messages leaves Tbird indexing and eating 87% of CPU for hours...

Guys, I'm so frustrated with Thunderbird I'm about to ditch it. I guess the problem has to do with the new indexing of messages. In the past I always like tbird because it was lightning fast and I was never left waiting on a sluggish email client to finish doing something I didn't tell it to do in the first place (like kmail). In the past few 3.x releases, tbird has gotten slower, and slower, and slower.... Tonight, I went to clean out my vbox folder since the mailing list has changed to a new sourceforge list. That left me deleting ~2500 messages. I scanned the subjects on the unread ones and would generally delete ~100 messages at a time. I finished the deletes in ~ 15 minutes. That was about 2 hours ago and tbird is still indexing and lying its ass off telling me it is 99% complete with message XXXX of YYYY -- just before it just increases both numbers and in reality tells you it has thousands more to do. Does anybody have a fix for this slow indexing problem (other than turning it off). Wolfgang, do you know if Mozilla is working on anything to fix this problem? So far it looks like ever bit of software that tries some new latest-greatest indexing tools makes a complete mess of their product and ends up with a fiasco on their hands. Can you say "beagle" again, or stringi/nepomuk/avahi? Has anyone who has turned the indexing off tried to use search in tbird 3.x? If the only difference from getting rid of indexing is longer searches, that's fine. I don't do that many searches anyway and I would gladly trade a 5 minute delay in searching ever couple of days or so to get rid of hours of indexing, a "HOT" laptop due to running with the CPU pegged for hours and gigabyte index files scattered all over my box. Hello: Several web sites offer their pages for viewing them in the browser and for printing. Eg. at "http://www.mno.hu/portal/711171" clicking "Nyomtatható verzió" at the end of the article opens a new tab/window with the print version of the article. What is important for me that I can save this page as an html page using the browser's save function. Other sites direct the content to the printer when you click the print version. Eg. at "http://nol.hu/belfold/13_1__mit_titkol_borokai_gabor_" clicking on the printer icon opens the printer dialog. But I would like to save the print version as an html page in such cases as well. [opensuse] why desktop does copy instead of rename?

Hi, Using Linux 2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop i686, KDE: 4.3.5 (KDE 4.3.5) "release 3", desktop as "folder view" when I rename a folder that I have placed on the desktop (right-cklick on icon, rename) the folder gets copied into a new folder with the new name and in the end the old folder is deleted. Why? This is really strange, isn't it? To rename large folders (a camera card with some GB's for example) takes quite a while because of the useless copy, instead of just the time of a click. I followed all your steps one by one, and finally at the end, by commenting out only the smtps line in master.cf, postfix started and I've got a flood of emails coming in from my backupmx. That did the trick. Perhaps it is because I seldom set these up. I think it is because I do not use subnets in this context. I was too quick to change the oft used .0 at the end into a specific machine's address. Geesh. I have a few networks on which I want to provide dhcp services. These are instrumentation networks for networked transducers. I am guessing I am just brain-dead this morning, but I can't see what I am doing wrong. I have two networks, that are configured as follows: inet 192.168.99.99/24 brd 192.168.99.255 inet 10.2.10.41/28 brd 10.2.10.47 So, I enter the following in my dhcpd.conf file: subnet 10.2.10.41 netmask 255.255.255.240 { default-lease-time 345600; } subnet 192.168.99.99 netmask 255.255.255.0 { default-lease-time 345600; } The netmasks are indeed the ones I have configured for the networks. Hi all, I updated my 10.3 server to 11.0 (using retail purchased DVD) and that seems to have broken my postfix install. Postfix is/was set up to send/receive to/from my own domain and has been working mostly fine for a few years. After the update I can send, but receive is not working. I THINK inbound emails are getting in, but no new emails are showing in the inbox. (I had to temporarily subscribe to the opensuse list to see any replies). AFAICT inbound emails are not bouncing, at least not until the queue gets full. The upgrade seemed to go fine, the machine boots OK, but the new install is not the default in grub. I can fix that. I do get the following in messages: ------ May 3 07:54:24 cammee postfix/master[5788]: fatal: 0.0.0.0:smtps: Servname not supported for ai_socktype May 3 12:55:26 cammee postfix/postqueue[5924]: fatal: Cannot flush mail queue - mail system is down ------ I note that the time for postfix shows to be off by 5 hours. Not sure how to set the timezone for that, and unsure if this is the sole problem. My clock is not set to UTC, but this has not been a problem until now. I googled " fatal: 0.0.0.0:smtps: Servname not supported for ai_socktype" and found only one thread related to that, but its in German which I can't read. The google translator wasn't too accurate...... On initial reboot I did see some screen message about postfix error, something related to either main.cf.SuSEConfig, or maybe master.cf.SuSEConfig being present, but can't find that in the logs. It should be in there somewhere. Postfix did not start on first boot, but it does start manually, and now on reboot. ClamAV and freshclam are updating themselves, according to the logs, which is not completely pertinent, but it tells me the system is MAINLY working OK. Apache is up too. I did have to change /etc/imapd to allow plaintext passwords. That's the only change I've made so far. Any pointers most welcome. Thanks. On OpenSuSE10.3, with Truecrypt 6.3, when a truecrypt volume is mounted and the system is going to hibernate, it hangs at or immediately after "suspending tasks...". This only occurs when I forget to unmount any truecrypt volume before hibernating the system. There doesn't seem to be any scripts associated with suspend/hibernate. Is there another way to automatically get truecrypt volumes unmounted before suspend/hibernate? [opensuse] Dutch Manual or Documentation

Hi all, I have a Dutch friend that I converted from M$Win on his Asus EeePC to openSUSE 11.2 All the years I saw the documentation being installed when I installed the distro, but only used it in the beginning. Now I need a newbie type of handbook for my friend in Dutch, from the very basic to guide the user around the KDE 4.x and how to use and install programmes etc. The first SuSE systems had a nice users manual, and an admin manual in the box. A printable version was also in the installed system. Is it still done? I have not tracked it down yet. Does something like that exist with the newest versions? A PDF will also be OK, then I can print it out. He needs a book at the moment, as he is almost 70 years old and likes to have a paper copy ... he is eager as H-ll to learn openSuSE 11.2. [opensuse] Firefox 3.6.3 add-on manager not running

Dear all, I have Firefox 3.6.3-1.2 from buildservice installed including as I suspect the correct version of xulrunner: 1.9.2.3. I keep getting the following error: "A script on this page may be busy, or it may have stopped responding. You can stop the script now, or you can continue to see if the script will complete. Script: file:///usr/lib/xulrunner-1.9.2.3/components/nsExtensionManager.js:623" If I try to stop the script the error shows up again. [opensuse] WiFi and KDE4 - systray icon

I recently tried out the latest PCLinuxOS release, and noticed something... in their KDE4 build, the systray icon for the WiFi is the familiar graduated bargraph style... it's very readable, easy to see signal strength on etc. Back to the openSUSE KDE4 builds, and we've got that useless circle thing that's basically unusable as a visual reference to see WiFi signal strength etc... it's just a white and blue circle... and the microscopic signal strength bar on the right is... well.. microscopic. What's the trick to enable or use a more "normal" and readable WiFi systray icon in KDE4/KNetworkManager? I've been poking Google and various forums, but haven't turned up anything useful yet. Hi all, This is maybe out of topics but I want to ask if someone here uses open source authoring tools and can share the experience. My friend use CourseLab (which is free but not open source) to produce SCORM content for LMS. It has very good function but only run on Windows. Is there any Linux based alternatives to it? My first thought would be to find out the name of te package that gives the bar graph. Find te source code for it and build it on opensuse. Linux code in PCLinuxOS should be able to be used in any other distro. [opensuse] Thunderbird config and content file: openSUSE vs Ubuntu

Hi all, It appears that while under openSUSE the Thunderbird's files go into $HOME/.thunderbird in Ubuntu the are stored in $HOME/.mozilla-thunderbird . Not only that but the content appears somehow different - linking or copying content to the correct folder does not work. So, does anybody have any idea what all of this is about? What I am trying to accomplish is manage things in such a way as to allow users to use Thunderbird the same way whether they log into their account from a SUSE machine or an Ubuntu one.
