[opensuse] Dutch Manual or Documentation
Hi all, I have a Dutch friend that I converted from M$Win on his Asus EeePC to openSUSE 11.2 All the years I saw the documentation being installed when I installed the distro, but only used it in the beginning. Now I need a newbie type of handbook for my friend in Dutch, from the very basic to guide the user around the KDE 4.x and how to use and install programmes etc. The first SuSE systems had a nice users manual, and an admin manual in the box. A printable version was also in the installed system. Is it still done? I have not tracked it down yet. Does something like that exist with the newest versions? A PDF will also be OK, then I can print it out. He needs a book at the moment, as he is almost 70 years old and likes to have a paper copy ... he is eager as H-ll to learn openSuSE 11.2. Some Dutch book suggestions will also be welcome. TIA Al -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

The first place to start is probably here: http://nl.opensuse.org/Documentation and this might be of help (although it's rather light on info): http://nl.opensuse.org/How_to_migrate_from_Windows Not a lot of the rest has been translated though (mostly links to pages that say it's not yet been translated). Some of the online shops in the Netherlands that are Linux friendly have a few Nederlands books in their stock... http://shop.mensys.nl/ but.. only a few. A lot of the books that have been translated into Dutch are quite old (eg published in 2002, 2004 etc). BOL has a few Dutch books as well... http://www.bol.com/nl/index.html The Computer Collectief also has a few... a very few Dutch books... http://www.comcol.nl/detail/bicxl__3.htm There is a little info here: http://www.nl.linux.org/ Again.. sparse, and mostly old... quite old.. These guys might be of some help... http://www.nllgg.nl/ The biggest "problem" you're up against is the vast majority of people in the NL speak and read English fluently... so sometimes, particularly in IT, you find that the Dutch translations lag way way way behind if they bother at all with translations (at least in my experience after living in the NL for many years). Hi C & Carlos, As you pointed out "C", I also learnt when I was on my visits to NL, that the people are multilingual there. Admirable! Most can get around fluently with at least 3 languages! My friend is unfortunately of a previous generation. He does speak English as well, but has some difficulties still. I wanted to ease the convert by giving a neat KDE4 Users Manual; older KDE versions are very different. He is completely new to openSuSE (well Linux as a whole). It seems to be a show stopper for non English newbies to convert to openSuSE Linux. I will provide him with the English documents. Another way could be to create two users in different languages, Dutch (Ctrl-Alt-F8) and English (Ctrl-Alt-F7) to translate. Does it work with multiple languages on one system? In the mean time, we will look at some Dutch on-line booksellers - but most do not address KDE4. Thanx for the info so far. :-) Al -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yep, it does. In the case of kde you have to select to install those languages, in Yast. Once you do, several big suites (kde, gnome, yast, openoffic.org, spell check...) get the languages you choose installed. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. I know.. it was really frustrating for me living there until I got to grips with speaking passable Dutch.. I was the odd one out most of the time :-P

Well.. KDE4 specific does have some documentation produced by the L10N KDE team... http://www.kde.nl/doc/ It's not a nice HowTo like the standard openSUSE PDF documentation, but it does cover most of the basics... also, don't forget good old F1.. the Dutch team have translated almost all of the help into Dutch... so on a per app basis, there is Help available in Dutch if the Dutch version of KDE is installed. Yes, it is there, in pdf and html, but it is no longer translated. English (and german) only, AFAIK. Yast package manager, rpm groups, Documentation/S[U|u]SE. Or, you can search for older versions, 9.x perhaps, that were translated. Dutch, I don't know. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Some Dutch book suggestions will also be welcome. I'm afraid you'll be out of luck in the book department for reasons other posters have mentioned, but
http://www.kde.nl has an extensive documentation of KDE4 in Dutch. It's a start. -- Jos van Kan registered Linux user #152704 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
