[opensuse] Disappearing CD/DVD ROM

Hi list, My CD/DVD drive has recently become only partially visible to applications. I use a Windows program, EAC (Exact Audio Copy) running under wine, to rip audio CDs, but it has recently stopped seeing my CD drive. I installed grip, to see if it was a wine problem, but this also can't read audio CDs in the drive. Well, it does very briefly as the drive gets mounted, in other words I see the list of tracks flash on and then off again. Grip can eject CDs, so the drive isn't completely invisible. On the other hand, smplayer plays an audio CD in the drive without a problem. I'm using openSUSE 11.2 with kernel 2.6.31.14-0.4-desktop, and KDE 4.5.2 release 10. I'm not sure when this problem started, as ripping CDs is only an occasional task, but it was definitely working OK on 5 October. Have the DRM people hacked my machine? Any suggestions, please? [opensuse] wma and vlc

Hi everyone I still can't play a wma file. In vlc the marker moves along as if it's playing but no sound emerges. mp3's play fine on just about everything so I'm sure the sound system os OK. Ive tried deleting the packman vlc and installing the videolan vlc but still the problems persist. Perhaps I'm missing something simple. 11.3 updated today. [opensuse] Cursor freezes at startup

After the last update to 11.3-2.6.34.7-0.5 the cursor freezes directly after the openingstune of the speakers and I have to force a restart up to four times to be able to move the cursor to operate normally. [opensuse] How to staying connected to the network after logging out from session?

Hello: I have openSUSE 11.2 with KDE 3.5.10. I am using kinterent for network connection. My setup in yast for network setting is: traditional method with ifup. The setting for DSL connection in yast are: - activate device on hotplug - enable device control for non-root user via kinternet is turned on After logging in an account kinternet automatically connects to the network, but if the user logs out the computer becomes disconnected. I would like the system to stay connected after the user logs out from his session. How can I achieve it? [opensuse] Mail backup

Hi, At home I have a mailserver running. Right now, however, my internet-connection is broken. I don't know when it will be fixed. How could I have a backup-server until the connection is restored ? I added my domains in my mailserver at work, but I would need to add all users, which is not possible at the moment as I don't have the details here at work. Is it possible to have the mail-server just store the mails and then forward them when the connection is restored ? [opensuse] openSUSE 11.3 doesn't boot up after ram change

Can't find the reason why openSUSE 11.3 (32 bits) doesn't boot up when I change my laptop's ram cards. I changed 2gb 667Mhz (1gb x2) for 4gb 800Mhz (2gb x2). BIOS recognize the 4gb, GRUB comes up and then the black screen stops the load. The weird thing is that the system seems to be working behind but the screen doesn't display anything. I tested the ram running a live CD (100% ram). It works just fine. Someone told me that a re-installation should work but I want to be sure if this is related to an OS or motherboard issue. [opensuse] Can't get Evolution 2.30 to connect to an Exchange Global Address List

I'm just curious if anyone else has had an issues with Evolution 2.30 (from the openSUSE 11.3 release) connecting with to a MS Exchange 2003 GAL. Because I've gone round and round with this one and I can't get it to work. Evolution itself will connect and display the email messages. I can even see the regular contacts stored on the Exchange server. But every time I try to open the GAL, I get this error message: Unable to open address book This address book cannot be opened. This either means that an incorrect URI was entered, or the server is unreachable. Detailed error message: Other error I've checked and my entry in the GAL field is correct. And I have an 11.2 box that has no problems connecting, so I know that the server is available. I've tried connecting with: - a fresh install (evolution-exchange 2.30.1-2.12) - a fully patched install (which has no Evolution updates) - using the Gnome 2.30 repository (evolution-exchange 2.30.3-1.1) None of them work. They all give the same error message. In desperation, I tried Ubuntu 10.10 (which runs Evolution 2.30.3); and it is able to connect to the GAL. It assures that when you build kernel modules, etc.. you actually get a working module for the current kernel. Just let the new rpms that do conflict replace the current 2.6.34 packages. I think you can just look at the dependency conflict and manually uninstall the one that conflicts and then use the 'rpm -ivh *.rpm'. [opensuse] Perennial laptop query - wanting to run openSUSE 11.2+

I am investigating getting a new laptop. For the most part I know what I should expect to work. Unfortunately, the graphics chip seems to be the tricky part. It seems to me that Nvidia is getting less and less common in laptops. At least the ones generally available here in Sweden. Like HP, Sony, and the like. All the laptops that I come across that have all the features I want (reasonable screen size, non-Sherpa weight, nice keyboard) seem to have ATI rather than Nvidia chipsets. Like Radeon HD 5850 or 5860. I know that there has been progress on the ATI driver front. My last use of an ATI card (a firewire GL that was not supported by the ATI driver), as well as general rumbling by other users, indicates that I should steer clear of ATI chips. Is this still the case? It is obviously a YMMV question. But how are others faring with similar ATI chipsets? I don't want a religious war. I know I will probably get one. The result is that I don't get to the GRUB prompt anymore, because the screen goes black after the POST routine. There is no difference when the boot order is set for either HD. [opensuse] MinGW versions of openSUSE libraries

I really like the idea of the MinGW version of libraries and other things on openSUSE that is available in OBS. I am planning on moving some of the Windows libs that I maintain to using the ones in OBS. However, (there had to be a however, right?) I am a bit confused: There are on OBS versions of, say, libtiff, for openSUSE and for Windows. Interestingly, there is a MinGW repository for each release of openSUSE. For example, windows:/mingw:/win32/openSUSE_11.2 I would think that the reason for having different versions of the MinGW repos is that each can contain a version that matches the version installed in the corresponding openSUSE release. Alas, that is not the case. For example, on openSUSE 11.2, libtiff is at version 3.8.2, while the MinGW version is 3.9.4. This is the case for many, perhaps even most, libraries. On my machine I am running xawtv in corner of my screen in order to keep an eye on the program and switch to my TV screen if it starts to become interesting. When using Skype I want to use my webcam. I run xawtv with the instruction to use video1 (xawtv -c /dev/video1) and keep the Skype on video0. In order to achieve that I have to give a "#modprobe bttv" before using xawtv. I assume that there must an easier way to achieve that but did not find out the howto. with reference to this thread http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-help-here/network-internet/448586-nn… several nntp users on the openSUSE forum have discussed an unexpected change in the line preceding the nntp signature from "--" to "- --" when using several different Linux mail/usenet clients and signing the message with OpenPGP.. while it doesn't seem to be a problem with the clients (and i highly doubt it to be an openSUSE problem) i failed in trying to google and learn if: 1. it is a bug in OpenPGP 2. if a bug, if it has been reported 3. the extra "- " just what the nntp/pgp RFC calls for 4. it is a bug in PGP 5. it is a bug in the interaction between nntp and PGP/OpenPGP 6. ??? any event, if anyone can tell me anything about where to ask or report, i'd appreciate it.. sorry if i overlooked an easily found answer, DenverD -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe(a)opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help(a)opensuse.org

Hi all, I'm using xen for quite a while, and personally i'm quite satisfied with it. However, regularly i've got questions about KVM/vmware, so i want to be able to provide it also. But not "instead of xen". >From the latest weekly rapport i understand (correct me if i am wrong) that a system can either host virtual xen-images OR kvm-images, but never both simultaneously. Is this indeed so? And if so is this a choice or something more fundamental.... I mean, with 8 cores and 36G mem, it is a waste to have a dedicated machine for one or two KVM-images.
