[opensuse] Bugs while playing swf files???

[opensuse] selecting atlantis screen saver on 11.2 box locks it up

Folks: Just installed 11.2 on an AMD box with a gigabyte motherboard and built in ATI video card - specifics below. Anyway, after I went into Control Center -> Screen Saver and then selected Atlantis I lost my keyboard and only had some mouse control - buttons no longer worked so I couldn't select another screen saver. Also, cntrl-alt-backspace didn't kill the X server and cntrl-alt-delte didn't kill the box. I tried to ssh into the box and after taking my password that shell locked. [opensuse] Garbled virtualbox install

Hi all, I am afraid I managed to mess up Virtualbox installation. I tred the installation of the rpm from the virtualbox homepage, and also Virtualbox-ose from the distribution (oS 11.2, KDE 4.3.4). Of course, now I have a big mess, and I cannot get rid of it. Zypper rm says vbox is not installed Zypper in says vbox is already installed. How can I remove all the files from previous vbox install, and do a "clean" install? [opensuse] TCP port usage question - possibly uTorrent specific

All, I researching a intrusion and I have netflows that show activity that I can relate back to a rogue install of uTorrent. Many of the netflows show an outside client connecting to the server via the bound service port. (A non-standard one in this case.) But many of the netflows show uTorrent initiating outbound connections from that same port. Is that normal? Does it indicate anything unusual? I'm familiar with FTP have both active and passive opens for the data socket. Is this just the same thing but for torrents? Hi, I'm sure I ticked the box for my user to receive system mail when I installed this system (11.2 & KDE 4.3) but nothing arrives in the mailbox folder I've created in Kmail. This is set to collect mail from /var/spool/mail/bob. How do I get root's mail forwarded to this account? [opensuse] How to sync (un)installed packages between two machines.

Hi I've got two machines, both the same OS (opensuse 11.2), arch (x86_64), and set of repositories/priorities. I'd like to sync the (un)installed packages between the two machines. I.e., I want Machine#2 to be 'upgraded' to have "all & only" the packages that are installed on Machine#1, adding, removing, or modifying as required. Starting as different installations, the two boxes should end up with a fully sync'd set of packages. What's the right/efficient way to go about this? Hi all, I'm thinking about getting a color laser printer. It has 4 toners, ie black, red, yellow, and blue. I've never had a color one before, so my question is do all the toners run low at the same time? They are about 150€ each and if I had to replace them all at once it would hurt. Anyway, I'm looking at a very good deal on a Samsung CLX-6210FX. Does anyone know anything about this printer and Linux? [opensuse] 11.2: can't add SSL-exception to Firefox

Hi, I'm running oS 11.2 with KDE 4.3. I installed webmin 1.500 and try to access it via Firefox (3.5.6-5.1.x86_64). I get this incredibly nonsensely "dangerous site" warning. Of course I proceed "I know the risk", "Add Exception". But nothing happens. >From other sites, I know that there used a window to pop up and the unknown certificate was shown and could be added. Now nothing happens - no popup window, no adding possible. BTW, when the respective buttons are labeled with other texts, I am sorry, I re-translated them from the german UI... With Opera, everything works fine. Even when I generate another certificate and even certificate authority via Opera, no popup window appears, no certificate can be imported. Export via Opera and Import in FF work, but still "dangerous site", no popup, the login page is not displayed in FF. I wonder if anyone else saw this... [opensuse] is it generally recommended to write software that NOT store temporary files in home directory?

Dear all I was wondering is there a best practice or conventional suggestion that software should not write temporary files in user's home directory, but do it on /tmp/ or /var/tmp? I ask this because when I want to backup a live user profile usually it fails thanks to file size change during backup. Most of them are temporary files. In my case it is a bit difficult to back it up by asking the user to log out, because I can only access their computers in working hour, and they are working in working our, especially backup takes perhaps 1 hour, and I don't want to interrupt them by 1 hour. After working hour they took back their notebooks. I start to think, that is it by design backup should be when user not logged in, or is there exist a convention of not using ~/.app as temp but software designers tends to ignore that? Hello :-) I try to protect some online images. I have some ideas I would like to know if they have any chance of being usefull. most simply, I have a photo collection that lay online. public photos are on open folders, private one are hidden behind <directory> apache passwd restrictions. This seems to work. http://dodin.org/wiki/index.php?n=Photo.GaleriesPhoto However, I would like to have some more functions (for example slideshows) using a gallery software. right now I try to use piwigo. The software allows using permissions on images so only the needed ones are public. However most photo in the collections have trivial names (mostly the name given by the photocamera), so it's pretty simple to mind most names from knowing one. For example if I have one public image in the repository, all private names can be gessed and private image viewed. If I add apache restriction, the gallery software dont work. I try to fix this. I don't know any way to allow downloading of public images without giving publicly they URL :-( so I wonder if I could add somewere in the image name a random part making the name guess much more dificult. for example, I could change the name img_2015.jpg to img_2015_489745.jpg, 489745 being random. Do you think this will be enough? is there any better way to have the same result? do you have ideas? [opensuse] openSuSE Kernel Change that effects Wireless Install ??? (Atheros AR242x will not work)

Guys, I need a miracle! I have probably installed the madwifi driver at least 10 time on my laptop on SuSE 10.2 through 11.2, but after a new 11.0 install, I am unable to find a madwifi driver that will install and "stay" installed. The funny thing is that the madwifi driver has no problems on the same box when installed on Arch Linux. Even more perplexing, I still have the 11.0 rpms that 'I WAS USING ON THIS BOX' that no longer no longer work, so I know the difficulty is something openSuSE specific with the latest kernel or two. I say that, because the existing drivers I have -- have always worked when I installed them with the original kernel and then updated through each successive kernel. Now, jumping from 2.6.25.5-1.1 to 2.6.25.20-0.5 in one step has left 11.0 in a condition where it will not load the driver properly. I have built and installed from the driver for the following sources all of which worked on this box in the past: madwifi-0.9.4-1.src.rpm # The standard 0.9.4-1 driver madwifi-0.9.4-1-current.src.rpm # The standard 0.9.4-1 driver with the madwifi-project suggested snapshot for 2.6.25+ kernels. madwifi-svn-122109 # this module worked briefly (limited to 1M/s), but then died and despite a number of reinstalls will not configure properly. madwifi-ng_r3366+ar5007-1.4.src.rpm # always worked in the past madwifi-ng_r3366+ar5007-1.9.src.rpm # always worked... madwifi-r3725+AR5007EG-2.2.src.rpm # what I was running on before the 11.2 install madwifi-trunk+r3717-1.2.src.rpm # worked in the past... and I have one or two more around... I even got to the point I was making sure the kernel was 'properly prepared' and that 'all' remnants of the prior installs were removed from the module tree and unloaded by reboot. I would: make mrproper make cloneconfig make modules_prepare make clean in between the package installs. Two notes of interest. (1) the packages are never consistent between where they put the modules in the module tree under /lib/modules/2.6.25.20-0.5-default/.. Sometimes the modules go under ../net, sometimes under ../updates, sometimes under ../weak-updates, but until now it always worked. Second, under openSuSE, I have always had to use the 'ath_pci' module. No matter what, the ath5k driver has never worked -- period. That always seemed strange. Well I confirmed it was strange, because when I checked the module used by Arch Linux on this box, low-and-behold, it was using ath5k??? How does that happen? The errors are pretty much of the same flavor. I have probably uninstalled, confirmed the uninstall was complete, built, rebuilt, reinstalled until I'm blue in the face. My shortcoming here is that I know not what suse is doing with the module tree and how it is assigning modules/devices. From what I can tell the modules.alias handling of ath5k versus ath_pci may be an issue. In the past, I have always just blacklisted ath5k in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist to prevent it from loading, but that doesn't work any more. I have attempted to insure that ath_pci is loaded before ath5k with MODULES_LOADED_ON_BOOT`as shown in http://en.opensuse.org/Kernel_module_configuration. Still doesn't help. I need the collective wisdom of the brain-trust to point out where I'm doing the stupid thing that I'm apparently doing repeatedly... Hi, I've successfully resized (grow & decrease) LVMs within a given Volume Group numerous times. Now I'd like to resize a Volume Group AND its parent partition, and am unclear as to the right/safe method. I have: /dev/sda 500 GB "/boot" /dev/sda1 200 MB LinuxNative, Ext4 (unallocated space) 100 GB /dev/sda3 200 GB LinuxLVM VG0 200 GB "/" (root) LV_A 50 GB Ext4 "/home" LV_B 100 GB Ext4 I'd like to (1) grow /dev/sda3 at the "front end" to use up the available 100 GB (2) grow the VG0 to use 100% of the now-larger /dev/sda3 Since "/" is ON the target partition, I've tried booting from the Opensuse 11.2 Live KDE CD and using its Partition Manager, but it tells me that /dev/sda4 is "in use", and unavailable for edit/resize. Before I go trying more brute-force methods, and subsequently losing my data, I thought I'd ask -- what's the RIGHT way to get this expansion done? [opensuse] headset and loudspeakers at the same time

hi I have loudspeakers plugged into the rear of my Desktop computer. If I plug my headset mic and speakers into these rear outputs everything works fine. If I want to use the headset, I have to unplug the loudspeakers and then plug in the headset. I have the same sockets on the front of the computer. Nothing is output from the front sockets. Is there any way I can have both without having to plug and unplug each time? I know I can get a swich for around €10 but I think I may have this already. Has this been solved by anyone? Hi all! I really really really HATE jDownloader! If it was not for me not being able to find files in formats other than dlc I would not even bother with this program. Anyway I installed jDownloader and tried to d/l a file from rapidshare. I got this error: JDownloader not responding on http://localhost:9666/flashgot! Please check your firewall settings. We had a generator test at work over the weekend that exceeded the UPS time limits so machines shut down. They've all come back but I'm seeing a lot of messages in /var/log/messages of one of them (every few minutes). I strongly suspect they're telling me to buy a new disk but I need to find and read the friendly manual to be sure. Can anybody confirm my suspicion and/or point me at the correct manual? I have a small block of bad RAM in a DDR2-800 dual channel pair, @930.6MB, that's causing me lockups when I try to use K3B to copy a DVD. I looked at: http://badmem.sourceforge.net/docu/BadMEM-HOWTO.html http://sourceforge.net/projects/badmem/ Then I tried to find a kernel with it already compiled in on http://software.opensuse.org/search but no luck. Has anyone tried using this in a recent openSUSE kernel? I'm using 11.0, but with a 2.6.27 kernel from http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/ilya_41/openSUSE_11.0/i586/ to get around a CIFS bug in the stock 11.0 kernels. Hi, I just ran 'zypper up' on an openSUSE 11.1 machine. This pulled in a new kernel: kernel-pae-2.6.27.39-0.2.1 kernel-pae-extra-2.6.27.39-0.2.1.i586 The installation of the kernel packages brought with it a warning message (repeated multiple times for each package): 2009-12-26 07:28:01 WARNING: GRUB::GrubDev2UnixDev: No partition found for /dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST3300831A_3NF0VTGS with 1. I am a bit gun shy at this point to reboot the new system, being afraid the machine will not find the kernel or other important stuff at boot time and turn into a brick. Hi there, I've recently installed the packages from the mozilla repository; this resulted in a new package "mozilla-nss-certs" which I guess deals with checking certificates. Due to my - potentially - strange setup (I use a 32-bit Firefox on a 64-bit openSUSE-11.1 system), this resulted in Firefox not being able to access any https://... site anymore. Trying to replace the 64-bit version of mozilla-nss-certs with its 32-bit version will probably make Firefox work again, but I'm afraid, it will kill all the rest of the 64-bit applications which need the nss/ssl functionality. Unfortunately I cannot install the 32-bit version in parallel either: # rpm -ivh mozilla-nss-certs-3.12.4-4.1.i586.rpm Preparing... ########################################### [100%] package mozilla-nss-certs-3.12.4-4.1.i586 is already installed Extracting it manually using # rpm2cpio mozilla-nss-certs-3.12.4-4.1.i586.rpm | { cd /; cpio -idvm; } results in a fully functional Firefox again. So, what is needed AFAICS is a mozilla-nss-certs-32bit package, which, for what is worth, is already provided for the base package: mozilla-nss-32bit. Wolfgang, can you please create such a mozilla-nss-certs-32bit package? [opensuse] Installation of wireless driver in notebook

Until now, I have been using my notebook machine with a wired connection to a router. Today I tried to use its wireless controller (Intel 5300), but failed. The controller is recognized by openSuSE, and I was able to configure it (I don't swear that I configured it correctly). Since it was seen without any action from me, apparently its driver is also in the kernel. But I was surprised that I didn't have to apply the firmware to it; I don't see how YaST could have managed that; perhaps that's why I have not been able to reach the network through this interface. The configuration screen contained many more options than what I see in the Network Services screens, and I don't know how to find those configuration screens so I could post here what I did at that stage, the details of which I do not remember entirely. Hello all-- This is intended to be a tutorial, not a spanking. Many folks have spelling troubles, especially foreigners. There are two words in the English language that are similar in spelling, but different in meaning. Many writers to the 'net seem to have a problem with these words. (Not just here!) "Loose" means not tied up, like a woman's hair without a ribbon, or a dog without a chain, or a horse in a paddock. The "s" is sibilant, like "ss." "Lose" means to not have anymore, due to some accident. You could lose your keys, your change, or, for a computer glitch, your code. In this case, the "s" is pronounced like a "z." The vowel(s) must be pronounced like a long double-o sound, in either case.
