[opensuse] How do I turn off the modem

I have /usr/sbin/modem-manager started from somewhere. I know not where and I know not why. I don't want it not be - I have no use for this damn winmodem anyway. When I kill it, it restarts. In Yast2 -> Network Devices -> Modem it seems to have recognised my intel card (ICH6 AC97) and I can't delete the modem entry. Yes, its also cluttering up the log files trying to open it and restart. I think its gumming up my sound function too. How can I stop this? Although I've been using 11.0 since it came out on several boxes, I haven't happened to need a print spooler on any of those until yesterday, when I discovered that the yast cups interface is broken, at least for me at least in the curses interface. I also tried variations on the specific config options, like, although I very much should be able to say no local filtering (ie: don't use any kind of printer driver or ppd file) maybe that's not so common and some part of the tool just assumes theres always a driver. etc.. So I also tried with local filtering and selecting an appropriate printer model (HP LaserJet 1320, totally common pcl driver), tried enabling sharing, tried lpd as well as raw tcp, to a known good and accessible lpd server. In all cases I got the same error above when it came time to actually save the config at the end. However, when I copied the printers.conf from the working 10.2 box, it worked. just a straight rsync copy, no edits at all. Then rccups stop, rccups start. And printing to those printers immediately worked. printers.conf just has this, one lpd printer and two jetdirect, no sharing, no filters/drivers. The comment shows a recent write because I had gone into yast-printers on the old box to delete a printer. The 3 remaining printers haven't been touched in around a year. The cups version shows it didn't come from the 11.0 box that's using it. The new box has cups 1.3.7. Both boxes have the same rules in susefirewall and it's active on the old box and disabling the firewall didn't help the new box, nor did reenabling the firewall break it. I reproduced the problem on 4 boxes, but, they are all practically clones of each other. Installed at the same time onto identical hardware from the same install source using the same install recipe. This all works fine in at least 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, not just 10.2. 9.3 and 9.1 the interface is a little different but I don't have any problems there either. I haven't istalled 11.1 anywhere yet. Can anyone else confirm this or know about it and know what the problem is and a work-around other than manually creating & editing printers.conf? Pretend I only have serial console access and that http://localhost:631 can't be operated well enough via lynx. -- Brian K. [opensuse] Ekiga 3.0.1 in openSUSE 11.1

Has anyone managed to get Ekiga 3.0.1 to work with VoIP providers? Ekiga 2.12 in openSUSE 11.0 worked perfectly all the time.. this new version is making me go bald. I can only get it to tell me "User is not available" now when I try to place a call to the regular phone network. I've wiped the Ekiga settings and set it all up again and triple checked my SIP account settings (and it's registering on my VoIP provider)... still nothing works. Any tips or suggestions here? [opensuse] X11 crash and loss of KDE settings in 11.1

Hello, I have a freshly installed opensuse-11.1 with kde4. I was logged in, and the desktop seemed to work fine (AFAICS, I'm still used to kde3). After a while, X11 died. At that time, I was not working at the computer at all, I was just logged into kde and watching some show on TV. Two firefox instances were running at that time: one showing the opensuse build service tutorial, the other showing the kde tutorial. Both launched from the splash screen that is shown the very first time one logs into KDE. After X11 died, kdm was restarted, and I logged in again. But this time, most of the kde settings were lost: - the transparent desktop folder was missing - all the icons in the control panel (including the chameleon button) were missing - the "logout" and "lock" buttons in the control panel disappeared Next, I renamed my original home directory (so I have a backup for investigation), and created a new one. After next login the desktop came back again as it was at the very first login. Now I have two questions: 1. what can I do to find out the reason for the crash? 2. is there any chance to bring my old directory back to live with the old settings? I consider it to be very impractical to loose all settings every time X11 crashes. Dear listmembers, currently I am trying to force openSUSE 11.1 to cooperate again correctly with SCSI-scanners. Therefore my call: whoever is willing and whoever owns a SCSI scanner / is using a SCSI scanner (even better if you own different ones) please: lshal > out and send that to me. Hi, My computer has a motherboard Gigabyte GA-P35 family. In the schematic in manual is showed an Intel ICH9 sound processor, in audio section of product specification is showed a Codec Realtek ALC889A. openSUSE 11.1 detect an Intel ICH9 family soundcard, but, at least, no sound in KDE 4.1.3. After some install and uninstall of the soundcard (yast), I observe that KDE Phonon system refuse Intel ICH9 and put as your default soundcard the Realtek ALC889A. My question is: how Phonon obtain the right information about soundcard and yast not do? Hello, I'm still quite new to OpenSuse. I'm using it on the desktop for a few months now. Before I used Ubuntu for 3 years, before that 2 years of Gentoo, and before that several incarnations of Mandrake. On a hosted server I'm using Debian. I have a question about zypper. I find that it works very similar to apt-get/aptitude in Debian/Ubuntu or emerge in Gentoo, so it wasn't very hard for me to get used to it. But I currently have a question. It's not really a problem, I only want to know how it works and why. In Gentoo, when you do an 'emerge --upgrade --deep world', it updates your system. Same thing happens in Debian&Ubuntu when you do 'aptitude dist-upgrade'. And in OpenSuse it's 'zypper dup'. In Gentoo and Debian, the package managers first get all the packages and only when they have them, they start to install. in OpenSuse the package manager downloads one package, installs, then downloads the next, installs, etc. Why does zypper work that way, in contrast to emerge and aptitude? One of the things I liked about emerge and aptitude was that I could tell them to fetch all new packages, but not install them. I could put that in cron so it would fetch in off-peak hours. The packages would be saved to a local cache. I wouldn't know how to do that in OpenSuse. Also what happens when one package depends on another but one of them fails to download when the other is already installed? It looks like I can skip a package when it fails to download, but perhaps I don't want that, perhaps I want it to abort the entire installation or update? Your reactions, please. [opensuse] Celeron _IDE OS11 to ATOM_SATA OS11 Server Migration

Hi All , we have existing FTP Server with 4 Slices(/ , swap , /ftp_1, /ftp_2) running under OS 11 32 bit OS . This machine is Celeron 2.X Ghz with IDE Disk of 80GB . Now i have bought one another machine with Following Specs : Intel ATOM , 160GB sata , 2 GB Ram . Now i am planning to move this Entire Disk as it is on this New Intel ATOM machine . can any one let me know what all problems i may faces and any solution or hints so that i can plan my migration . Should I use g4l , rsync , dd or any thing else ????? may i get error once i installed GRUB on sata , will my initrd will complaint about Sata Drivers . do i need to to make any changes using Live CD or knoppix . please suggest . [opensuse] kaffine stopped working

Is there a way to get Kaffine to play videos again? It just stopped working. Right now it will only play .mpeg. I have replace or upgraded all files I find, installed all new codec's got it back to the point where can get thumb nail pic of the video. when I go to play I just get a black screen.
