[opensuse] Default install creates /etc/.pwd.lock in 11.1

Hello, I have noticed huge delays in many operations (e.g. "ls -l"). After some investigation it turned out that the delays are caused by nscd when user/group name lookup is done. Even worse: it is not possible to change passwords or modify user accounts. The problem is caused because the installation procedure creates a file named /etc/.pwd.lock dated from 2008-12-09 22:41. When installing with "Installation from Images" activated, this file is created by the installation of the "KDE[base]" Image. Then I tried to install with "Installation from images" deactivated, but the file was created anyway (with a different timestamp this time), thus I assume some package is broken. Unfortunately, I could not figure out which package was the cause. A simple "rm /etc/.pwd.lock" cured the problem for me. [opensuse] HOWTO Import /var/mail/hylton email to MailDir?

Hi, I am using openSuSE 11.0 and I had an issue with my Postfix setup that didn't identify the email data store correctly. As a result some email received by fetchmail has been processed into the /var/mail/hylton folder. I have solved the Postfix error, but would now like to move the email from its incorrect location(/var/mail/hylton) and add trh messages into my Maildir store(/home/hylton/Maildir/), without bollocksing that. That way I will be able to view the messages in the Maildir location using Thunderbird, possibly via a new account. I figured I should create another account and then when the messages are displayed in that account's Inbox, simply drag and drop them into the Maildir store Inbox. What am I missing or what server details and other settings should I use if I am not actually connecting to an ISP but rather my own local filesystem ie /var/mail/hylton? (Linux Earth-svr 2.6.27.7-9-pae #1 SMP 2008-12-04 18:10:04 +0100 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux) (SAMBA 3.2.4-5.2) (MS Windows xp home/pro) My SOHO system consists of two Linux workstations, each with some network functions, a Windows XP pro laptop, and a Windows XP Home notebook. All are connected via a local net using cat 5 cable or wifi. I have a ton of tech data on Samba, from how to get it to how to administer a large network using Samba. (I think my problem is too much data.) All I want is to publish a folder on any of the machines that can be opened by any other machine. Can anyone give me a simple step-by-step procedure for doing that? Any help appreciated. -- Don Henson

[opensuse] DNS configuration question

Hi all, I just moved my internal DNS services from SuSE 9.3 to 11.1. In the process I found a couple of issues. First, and the one I'd rather like to fix is that although everything is working from a client perspective, I get a stream of errors in the logfile (so it'll fill up pretty fast, and presumably isn't working as cleanly/efficiently as it should be). The errors are of the form: Date... host... named[pid]: too many timeouts resolving 'address.somewhere.com/A' (in '.'?): disabling EDNS As I say, despite this, the client's perspective is that everything is working (it's not even slow). Any suggestions? Also, for info, the 11.1 install appeared to create all the necessary parts for this, but set up the named process to run in a jail, but gave ownership of the jail and everything in it to root, such that the named process was complaining that it couldn't write to it's own directories. (named had group-level privileges on these directories, but they were 755, so that didn't help much). This error appeared to prevent named working, but after I chown -R named /var/lib/named it started working. Cheers, Simon "You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. Hi all, I'm trying to configure a friend's laptop (OpenSuSE 11.1/Gnome) to auto mount a windoze share. I have a line in the /etc/fstab file like this: //192.168.2.3/Export /home/user/mnt cifs user=user,password=secret,uid=user,soft 0 0 Now, this works just fine and dandy if I issue a call to "sudo mount -all" but I'd like to find a way to have the system create the mount automatically as soon as it determines that it is able. I had hoped that the "soft" element in the options might persuade it to do something on those lines, but no luck. Anyway, any suggestions how I should do that? Also, I've noticed that the mount takes quite a time to start up (and using smbclient with heavy debug enabled, I noticed that the system was trying all kinds of things before it finally settled on a way to connect successfully) Any suggestions how I tune it to try only the "successful" approach? [opensuse] fglrx 8-12 driver released and builds and Installs Fine - Performance Terrible

Listmates, ATI, cc:Stefan: I have downloaded, built and installed the 8-12 release (version 8.561) of the fglrx driver on my Toshiba P205D laptop running openSuSE 11.0. The driver packages builds and installs just fine from the ati-installer: ati-driver-installer-8-12-x86.x86_64.run Also, the driver now supports 11.1, so I presume it will build fine there too. Building results in the rpm: fglrx64_7_1_0_SUSE110-8.561-1.x86_64.rpm which builds the fglrx.ko module against the kernel source just fine and installs with no errors. That is where the good news ends. For my laptop with the radeon 1200/1300 mobile card, the performance of the 8-10, 8-11, and the 8-12 drivers is just terrible compared to the 8-8 and 8-9 drivers. Immediately before installing the 8-12 driver I was running the 8-9 driver and dumped glxgears frame rates to compare, again, against the new 8-12 driver. With the 8-9 driver: 23:43 alchemy:~> glxgears 4889 frames in 5.0 seconds = 977.692 FPS 4870 frames in 5.0 seconds = 973.831 FPS With the 8-12 driver: 23:59 alchemy:~> glxgears 3021 frames in 5.0 seconds = 604.191 FPS 2613 frames in 5.0 seconds = 522.544 FPS 2614 frames in 5.0 seconds = 522.795 FPS WTF? Applications are "visibly" slower as well. That is nearly a 50% decrease in performance. I don't know what has happened to the fglrx driver, but it hasn't been right since the 8-9 release. Back to the 8-9 release and all is well. Stefan, if you still have a contact at AMD, would you pass this along? Hi, I'm trying to setup KDE 4.2 on my PC @ work. I could not activating the desktop effect. I have a checked 3D acceleration on Sax2 but I always got error message while activating KDE 4 Desktop Effect : "Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. Settings will be reverted to their previous values. Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advanced options, especially changing the compositing type."
