[opensuse] A pristine kernel

I am in situation where I have servers that do not use the SLES 9 stock and vetted kernel, they use a later 2.6 kernel from kernel.org. The server exhibits behavior of instability when booting because the kernel crashes mysteriously and there are ext3 boot-up errors as well. Keep in mind this is a production environment that someone put into jeopardy by compiling a pristine kernel without knowing all the facts of what was needed by the OS and it applications. I just would like to know who else practices this in a production environment. And why?? [opensuse] No localhost:901 in v11.0?

I've tried everything I can think of to get Samba working on my 11.0 server (built fresh, on a new empty hard drive). It's serving folders and files okay, but I can't get any users working, including Administrator, so there's no way the Windows machines (or even my Linux workstation) can be joined to my domain, of which this smb server is the PDC. And trying to use one of the smb printers from a Windows machine just results in a permissions problem. My Linux books, if they talk about Samba at all, simply show how to set up the server in YaST. That doesn't help, because everything there looks right. Except that every time I run the Samba server module, it asks me again for an Administrator/root password -- it doesn't seem to be able to create the user account, although no error is reported. I think I could probably get things sorted out using SWAT, but when I try to connect to localhost:901 no connection is possible. Firefox tells me that the site appears to be valid, but but it won't accept a connection. Has anyone else been down this road with 11.0? Things were working great in 10.3, but I really don't want to "upgrade" to that version again, if there's a simpler answer. (Of course, when I upgraded to 11.0 I should have saved a copy of samba.conf, but it's too late for that now.) Surely Samba is an important enough component of a server that it hasn't been overlooked in the move to 11.0. 1. this probably should have worked from this link http://en.opensuse.org/KDE4 but it didnt. tried the one click stable 4.0 install for 11.0, clicked yes a couple times for gpg keys, then yast package selection popped up. am I missing something? 2. whats the equivalent of debian apt-get install -f to fix package dependencies? just noticed in yast a bunch of "!" on a fresh install a few days ago. thanks. The xen install doesn't even boot so there doesn't seem to be any point in installing that. Why am I being offered these security updates when they can't be installed? If there isn't an opportunity to make the solver run accepting 32 bit if needed by default it's pointless offering the updates. [opensuse] Printer problems with 11.0

Hey Group; REF: HP LaserJet 4L /dev/lp0 foomatic printer openSuSE 11.0 RC i586 Since loading openSuSE 11.0 everyone of them has caused my printer to not work. On 11.0 beta 1 I did get it to work by completely by compiling and installing over openSuSE's version of cups. However, now "zypper dup" has again ruined he printer. Running the newest version of Yast2>Hardware>Printer seems not o find any of the foomatic or cups drivers for a HP Laserjet 4L. I have looked at /var/log/cups, "ps ax | grep cup" and any other way to track it down. Every thing seems to be working but the printer doesn't print. HP LJ4L has 2 green LEDs to indicate things are being buffered and working. Normally 1 and come on then 1 starts flashing. Now 1 comes on blinks and back on -> dead. It fails as root, su and as a user. I don't know and don't care right now, to be honest. I know that it SHOULD work as is out of the box with 11.0. It doesn't, and now a large firm will no longer consider SUSE....NOT any flavor. Security IS a big deal. Trojans for Linux ARE an increasing problem. And, any smart sys. admin. knows it and wants to protect against it. The fact that Antivir won't run out of the box IS and WAS a killer for them.
