[opensuse] How to switch NetManager back to ifup

Hi, I am using NetManager by default but it has small problem with my ADSL modem and Firefox is offline everytime started. Someone suggest to use ifup instead. How can I do this? [opensuse] DHCP with update of 2 DNS servers?

Hi, I need to configure a DHCP server in order to update not only the DNS on the same host but also a secondary DNS on a different host of the same subnet (yes, paranoia is at work ... ) . Problem is that only the DNS on the same host is updated. This is the relevant portion of dhcpd.conf: ddns-update-style interim; include "/etc/rndc.key"; zone od.loc. { primary 127.0.0.1; key rndckey; secondary 192.168.0.33; key rndckey; } zone 0.168.192.in-addr.arpa. { primary 127.0.0.1; key rndckey; secondary 192.168.0.33; key rndckey; } A manual nsupdate from the terminal works correctly. Can anyone tell me what options I need to add or change, please? Hi, I have VirtualBox 1.6 ose, OpenSuse 10.3. There are 2 physical network cards - eth0 and eth1. eth0 is connected with a wire to ADSL-modem, gets its address dhcp - 192.168.1.2 eth1 is not connected to anywhere. I want configure a bridge on it for VirtualBox, so guest OS (ALT Linux Server) would become part of local network (so I could ping it from my host suse, and my host could be pinged from guest os) and also they all should have inet, connected though eth0 I was following different instructions - http://en.opensuse.org/Virtualbox_Network_Bridging , http://dotlinux.blogspot.com/2007/12/virtualbox.html , and also some other - all without success. Startup log on the "Starting Network" stage has rather long pause, then [Done]. Login with root, ifconfig shows network device eth0 without ip assigned. Make ifconfig eth0 192.168.1.102 netmask 255.255.255.0 Nothing pings except itself. On what step did I miss something? *************** Also, if I make bridge on eth0 instead of eth1 (BRIDGE_PORTS='eth0' ), then with 'network restart' I have a bit different message: ... br0 br0 Ports: [eth0] br0 forwarddelay (see man ifcfg-bridge) .... ready br0 IP address: 192.168.1.101/24 ... Then I all the same. ifconfig looks the same, but the host stops pinging modem 192.168.1.1) and so there is no inet on the host suse. But the guest OS has 192.168.1.3 assigned to eth0 just after loading, pings model and has inet. [opensuse] 10.3 boxed sets

We buy openSUSE boxed sets (we have a Novel site license for all Novell products that I think allows us to use SLED, but we like openSUSE). We have noted something unexpected in these sets: the latest ones we have gotten have slightly different contents than the earlier ones. For example, a few RPMS that were missing on the earlier DVD are now present on the later DVDs. I say 'earlier' and 'later' relative to when we obtained them. Is this expected? If so, where can I find out what the differences in the DVDs are? I recall that it was claimed on this list that the recovery system on the original DVDs (or at least the released GM DVD) was broken and could damage a system. [opensuse] RAID 1 10.3 install doesn't boot

Just got a new box with 2 identical SATA drives. Followed (as best as my poor eyes could see the screenshots) the advice given at http://en.opensuse.org/How_to_install_openSUSE_on_software_RAID (first time trying the RAID thing) Everything pretty much went as expected, but the system would not reboot from the HD(s) at the midpoint of the install. I then discovered the moment in "install" where one has the opportunity to do "select mode: other" and boot from installed system, and the installer picked up again just fine. (booting from /dev/md2) So, all seems well until I try rebooting normally. The thing hangs just where you would expect grub to take over. Repeatedly. [opensuse] hwclock problem: "select() to /dev/rtc to wait for clock tick timed out"

Sorry in advance if this has been answered previously, but I haven't found an answer which works for me to this point. The problem is this: under openSUSE 10.3 (2.6.22.17-0.1-default) 'hwclock' used to work for reading and setting my Dell Latitude 830's hardware clock via /dev/rtc, but it seems to have stopped functioning at some point and I hadn't realized it till now. I've already tried using the '--directisa' alternative to /dev/rtc, but that doesn't seem to work either. I can set the HW clock OK manually via the BIOS on startup, so it seems to be functioning at that level. I've attached some output below which may be of assistance in diagnosing the problem. [opensuse] Multifunction printer suggestions

I hate to ask this and run the risk of starting a long drawn-out exchange of this printers good, this one sucks, like that. But with that fear on the table...I have an Epson Stylus Photo RX600, several years old now, but dying: the info/preview screen has quit. I have no idea what it may cost to fix/replace it. I am looking to consider a new printer. Linux compatibility is highest requirement as my current model has some issues. Biggest complaint, prior to withdrawal of the preview/info screen from the land of the well-functioning: paper handling. Very picky about number of sheets and precise loading. 100 sheet capacity listed was a goal I think, not a fact. Unless carefully loaded and bowed to with humble obeisance it will run multiple sheets together until corrected with a smaller load amount, not really close to 100. For me this results in lots of re-loads after having to listen to the printer complain about running out. Multi-function with fax, copy, scan, print would be nice. I print few photos of my own, but some for others just because I can and it does well. Would consider other brands but have been desirous in the past of supporting HP and Epson because of their purported linux support. At least as compared to Canon. Ink-jet is good as I am not in laserjet cost territory. Suggestions? Even general guidance is good. I don't mind doing my homework here, but am finding the plethora of options a little daunting right off. Thanks for steering. [opensuse] Opening same application on different desktops

Hi all, Opening the same application, like OpenOffice.org or Firefox on 4 different desktops causes confusion when a new link is started in e.g. Firefox or a new document or spreadsheet is opened from Konqueror. When a new link is opened in a new window, sometimes it opens in one of the other Desktops. I have to search all desktops to find the newly opened window. Similarly, if a new document is opened with a right click and the "Open with ..." is selected for the appropriate application, it seems to open where the last active session of the application was used. It is sometimes quite annoying when U forget that it may be opened somewhere else, and U click a second time. [opensuse] Problems with Xen-installation resp. configuration

Hi all, i've installed Xen as package right from scratch with a fresh installation of openSuSE 10.3 on my computer system. I can boot the system into the Xen-Kernel Now I'm running into problems with setting up DomUs: I'm using the "Create Virtual Machine"-program, for the setup, which is installed along with the Xen-package. It asks for the config of the new VM resp. DomU. At "Operating System Installation" I'm asked to provide an installation source. Therefor I wanted ot use a local iso-image on the desktop. I used the same for installing VMware-VMs. Unfortunately I get teh error message: "installation source is unusable". The same when using the physical CD via the physical CD-ROM-drive. If I choose Full Virtualization instead of Paravirtualization, I get no error message. A VNC-window opens, which indicates, that a process is being started, but the process seems to stuck when loading the iso-image. I have 3 programs available in YaST2 under "Virtualization": 1.) Create Virtual Machines -> doesn't work, like explained. 2.) Install Hypervisor and Tools -> States, that the hypervisor and the tools are properly installed. 3.) Virtual Machine Manager -> Doesn't start and gives the following error message on console: xend [ERROR] Config file does not exist: /etc/xen/xend-config.sxp But that file exists. I've changed the permission, but the Virtual Machine Manager doesn't start nevertheless. Besides I recognize, that the physical hasn't got a NW-link after the booting the xen-kernel. Under "Network Settings" I see, that the normal device isn't connected. When leaving the NW-setting, the link works (although I didn't edit anything). The Xen-daemon is running, as I checked via sudo /etc/init.d/xend start Can anybody tell me whats wrong with my installation?? May there any configuration be missing. [opensuse] Broken Gnome Files?

OpenSuSE 10.3, Gnome 2.20.0, OpenOffice.org 2.4.0. For some reason gnome has stopped recognizing some of my ODT files, specifically OpenOffice.org writer. I'm not even sure how to describe the problem. All I know is that when I click on some of the icons, I get the message "run in terminal or display or cancel or run". And it tells me that this file is an executable text file, just like you'd get if you try to click on a gedit file for example.To make matters more confusing, some of the files will open properly. This looks suspiciously like a corrupted file, but I have no idea which file it might be. if you execute OpenOffice.org first, and then use OpenOffice.org to open the file, then the file will open normally. This is not a major problem, but it is an irritant. If anyone has any ideas on this problem, I would be most pleased to hear them. Thanks in advance.
