[opensuse] No sound on new HP laptop; touch-switch may be the culprit.

I get no sound using OpenSuse 10.3 on an HP Pavillion DV9825 laptop. The sound works under Vista. There is a touch switch above the keyboard that mutes the sound output. When muted, it turns orange; otherwise it is blue. When SuSe is loading, the switch starts out blue, then turns orange. Touching it thereafter does not change it back to blue. Any suggestions? Further information: 1. [opensuse] openSUSE 11 Beta2 on T42p = no boot

Just went through the installation here - the installer looks really nice. Unfortunately, after the installation finishes, the result is a simple black screen (no splash or kernel loading happens at all) with the error "Error loading operating system". This is a standard T42p system. I restarted and ran the rescue system, and it didn't detect any significant errors (some of the thinkpad utility packages weren't installed). I told it to fix the boot loader, and that failed, so I tried manually fixing the boot loader. The failure I received was first in running mkinitrd - the filesystems needed weren't mounted by the rescue system (I have swap as /dev/sda1, / as /dev/sda2, and /home as /dev/sda3 - same as my 10.3 system, which is also a T42p). I mounted /dev/sda2 under /media/floppy (since it existed), chrooted to /media/floppy and mounted sysfs and procfs. Ran mkinitrd, and that ran fine then. I also then ran grub-install and it seemed to run OK, but after a reboot, that still hasn't resolved the issue. When given to me, the system had a Windows installation on it (not sure which, XP is most likely - I didn't boot it to find out), but I've wiped that out. I've also tried forcing installation (with grub-install) to the MBR of /dev/sda and that didn't work either. I'm kinda at a loss now as to how to proceed. Anyone have any suggestions? [opensuse] root password in shadow?

Hi all, In SuSE Linux 9.x I used to be able to reset the root password in the /etc/shadow file to nul, and could reboot without password and give a new one. I have read somewhere that this loophole was removed in later OpenSUSE versions. I actually tried to do the same trick in OpenSUSE 10.3; no go. [opensuse] resurrecting a dead Gnome

Howdy.. [openSuSE 10.3 - 32bit - Gnome] Monitor died while the system was up (the physical monitor itself died). Upon rebooting with a temporary monitor, I find Gnome windows manager has broken for the user account that was logged in when the other monitor failed. Among other things, all windows are missing their title bars, minimize-maximize-close buttons are missing, Panels are in the wrong places (and can't be moved), keyboard shortcuts don't work, CLI window can be opened from a panel but doesn't accept any typed input, yada yada yada. Question: how do I restore the Gnome settings for this user account? Just the user account Gnome is zapped. Root boots into a normal Gnome, as configured. So does the zapped user account if "failsafe Gnome" is chosen as the Session type at the login screen. Since the "failsafe Gnome" session settings work fine for the user account, I'd be content to just transfer those "failsafe Gnome" settings to the user account, if that's possible and easiest. How? [opensuse] making krdc behave like "screen" (attach/detach)?

I use krdc in opensuse 10.3 to connect to remote machines. I'd like to detach a krdc session and reattach to it from another computer just like I can do with /usr/bin/screen. How can I do this?
