- Boot your machine on a Live distro / rescue disk
- mount your local root filesystem RW
- edit /mnt/etc/shadow and copy the hash of a known password (leaving
the field empty didn't seem to work for me)
- reboot on the local hard drive and change the password the usual way

How is this a loop hole? If you can edit /etc/file, or even read it, you're already root You are aware I hope that root can run "passwd" and set a new password without having to give the old one So if you're root you can set the password.
