[opensuse] 10.3 upgrade, mostly success, new questions

Hi all, Well, my upgrade to 10.3 was fantastically successful. Video is rock solid and I can logout/shutdown without trouble (used to crash). The system seems much faster than it was before, and wireless worked out of the box without having to get that third party driver we used to need. I do have a couple of questions though: 1) Firefox doesn't do flash anymore, even though rpm reports that the flash plugin is installed. 2) Nothing seems to play any kind of video any more. I'm used to having a fairly limited set of codecs, but I thought I should have things like mpeg out of the box. What's the deal with this these days? Where do I go for extras, how do I turn it all on (also DVD, I was using xine/libcss before, but xine seems to be gone). BTW, I installed from the single Gnome CD (x86_64) on a dual core system. I let it have wired networking, and it went online to get all the extras it needed. I restored my home directory from the backup, and even that worked without any apparent glitch, my desktop, my mail, everything seems to be back. And just coz I feel like it, may I say again, this was an amazingly complete, and trouble-free install. I'm _loving_ it. [opensuse] cups help needed

Hello SuSE people, I installed 10.3 on my son's computeerr today. He finally got sick of windoze. All is well except for his printer. It is an MFC3420C. One of those all in one things and is a couple of years old. Went to brother site and downloaded the driver and a cupswrapper and installed them successfully. Followed the install instructions carefully and can see the printer in localhost:631. cups is not seeing the printer I guess because it is not printing. However, the install instructions say I must add the user and password to cups. Here is part of the install instruction and am not sure that is required to make it work. ----------------------- Note for SuSE Users: If you are using a later version of SuSE than version 9.0, set the password for CUPS using the lppasswd command:#lppasswd -g sys -a root This requires you to enter a password that is used specifically for CUPS administration. -------------------------- I cannot see or find where to do that. [opensuse] Printing (size) problem in Firefox

The following problem does not occur when printing from Opera, Konqueror, or other applicatons, and is associated only with Firefox. There is only one printer here, and it uses A4 size paper. Firefox seems to think the paper size is Letter, because it breaks pages at such a point that the upper portion of the printed page is empty, and only enough of the page to occupy Letter-size paper is printed. I do not see a setting for this in Firefox's Preference notebook. In About:config, I find one mention of "Letter", at: <print.postscript.paper_size>, and have changed that to "A4", but this does not solve the problem. There is a LARGE number of printer-related lines in About:config, some of them even mentioning "size", e.g.: <print.printer_CUPS/Brother.print.paper_size>, which has the value of "0" (which I find hard to interpret because there are several other lines that also mention size). There is a line <print.print_printer> which has the value "CUPS/Brother", so I am assuming that Firefox does print through CUPS, and CUPS does not seem to be the offender. I think this problem arose at about the time that there was an automatic update to Firefox v2.0.0.14, but I cannot be certain of that. [opensuse] 10.3 CD question

I'm about to start an install for my laptop to upgrade it to 10.3. I've discovered that in the weeks since the warranty has expired, my CD/DVD drive has lost the ability to read burned DVDs, so I'm going to have to do the install from CDs. However, it looks like there's only 1 CD in the distro for this? How can that be? We were at 5 with 10.2. What am I missing--or--how do I get the extra stuff that isn't there? Thanks! [opensuse] kdesu bug when path includes spaces (openSUSE 11.0 Beta3 KDE4 LiveCD x86_64)

Hi, I have a directory (/home/michael/openSuSE x64 Packages/) with a package (truecrypt-5.1a-0.x86_64.rpm) in it. When I click on the RPM in Dolphin, KDE su launches with the following command "/sbin/yast2 --install /home/michael/openSuSE x64 Packages/truecrypt-5.1a-0.x86_64.rpm". After I enter my root password, I get three separate errors: 1) Package Packages/truecrypt-5.1a-0.x86_64.rpm was not found on the medium. 2) Package x64 was not found on the medium. 3) Package /home/michael/openSuSE was not found on the medium. After the three errors, YaST quits. The errors are obviously related to the spaces. But I am not sure if this is openSuSE's problem or KDE's problem. I am inclined to believe that the error lies with openSuSE because kdesu has no way of knowing the last part is a path. I think there is a bug in one of the openSuSE scripts. Should I create a bug for this at bugzilla.novell.com? Also, I could use some help picking a better description since this is not really a kdesu bug in my opinion. Can anyone tell me what those "scripts" are called? Thanks in advance. [opensuse] GNOME doesn't start baobab when set with s-bit

Hi, I would like to start some utils easely from GNOME desktop (openSUSE 10.3). But some utils don't work correctly if they don't run as root - e.g. baobab. When I set the s-bit to let them always run with owner rights GNOME doesn't start them anymore. Starting baobab from a root shell works well. Is there a setting anywhere was allows this? Thanks. With k9copy it doesn't take very long at all on my dual-core 64-bit AMD system. Much longer to download 700 MB over my DSL line (not to mention exposing myself to the MPAA police, even though I already own the DVD). [opensuse] Upgrade from 11.0 beta3 to beta3 plus?

I have just installed oS11.0b3 and I would like to upgrade to beta3plus, how can I do it? As far as I know, if I just select all the packages to upgrade in YastGtk, I will upgrade to factory, right? [opensuse] Xen DomU installation problems

I'm attempting to install Fedora 9 as a DomU on my laptop which runs OpenSuse 10.3 but I'm running into a slight problem that I can't see to work around. I'm running the regular xen kernel and have virtualization support enabled for my processor (Duo Core 2 on a Dell Lat D520). When I start the installation procedure the tightVNC window opens up and I get to see the first load screen for Fedora for just a brief second, then the window changes size and it goes completely black. Regardless of how long I wait nothing again becomes viewable and I have to close the window and end up getting an installation error from Xen. I've done some poking around and haven't been able to come up with any reason why this is happening or any solution.
