Make sure you reply to the list, not just to me. GMail is not "mailing list aware", so you have to fix the To: address before you send. If you don't know your WiFi card model (assuming it is a built in WiFi card, and not a PCMCIA WiFi card), one easy way is to look up your laptop model at the manufacturers website. For example if you have an Acer Aspire 7720Z, you can go to the Acer website and you will find that this laptop has an Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG. Once we know that, someone here can go about giving you the right information about setting up your wireless. Telling us your laptop model will also help... sometimes there are tricks for specific laptop models that people have discovered and documented somewhere on the internet. Essentially there are three possibilities with wireless in Linux (I'm being very general here): - there is a native Linux driver, and you can simply use YAST to set it up - there is no native Linux driver, but you can get it working with ndiswrapper and the Windows drivers - there is no native Linux driver, and ndiswrapper does not work either, and you're stuck with tinkering and likely no WiFi until you go with an external WiFi solution (PCMCIA, USB etc) Almost all current laptops can be setup using the first or second solution. [opensuse] ext3 check forced = frustration

Anyone else getting annoyed by the periodic check forced in ext3 partitions? I started using ext3 in my large /home partitions, as recommended by openSUSE (still using Reiser for my smaller RAID1 root partition, because of this strange bug: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=350992 ) and today I passed again the 60 days limit without checking ext3 and I had to wait 10 minutes for the 200GB partition to be checked. It is bad enough that we don't get any decent feedback in the splash screen ( https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=344271 ), which I can imagine is unsettling to many new users, who will have no clue about what is happening. What I really question is if these lengthy checks are really needed. My Reiser partition was cleared with a simple journal check (isn't that what journaling systems are about?). Add to that the fact that hard disks are becoming bigger and these forced check times can mean one might need to wait 20 minutes or 1/2 hour to get access to the machine again? Obviously this will happen when you have to leave in 10 minutes and you are just about to print out that vital document and your foot hits the reset switch... What is the use of investing a lot of effort into reducing the boot time by precious seconds to give users a better Linux experience, if you have to wait 10 minutes for fsck every time you boot (since Linux allows you to run several months without reboot, until the next kernel patch comes by). [opensuse] mounting usb pendriver - openSUSE10.3 / vmware - dmesg doesn't show /dev/<what>

Hi experts. I have an OpenSUSE 10.3 distro runnung on vmware workstation 4.5.1 I recently enabled vmware to "Automatically connect new USB devices to this virtual machine when it has focus" Upon plugging in my 2GB Transcend Jetflash pendrive, dmesg does not give me a /dev/<what> device id for me to mount the device. Neither does the memory stick get automatically mounted. [opensuse] laptop recommendation again

Hi List! I need your advice more than ever :-) Finally I saved some money for a laptop. The main thing is that I'm windows free almost two years now, so I really want/need to run Linux (openSuSE) on it. I was thinking between Lenovo ThinkPad T61 (which was discussed earlier here in the list and seems to have good compatibility with opensuse) and Sony Vaio VGN-FZ4000. Sony looks much fancier, and actually cheaper than lenovo, but there is no much info about linux friendliness. It's on the NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT and WLAN 802.11 a/b/g/n w/Integrated Bluetooth wireless (and I really need wireless working). Is there any known issues with those? And in general maybe you know if there is any major issues with Sony? Also, I know it's been a long discussed issue, but is it possible to get rid of all the crap they preinstall on it (including Vista) Why do I need it If I'm gonna format it? And I get a free xp/vista here in university anyways (well I don't need it). During the online customization it's not possible to get rid of that, but maybe there are other ways? If there are any other brands/laptops you'd recommend looking for, I'd be only grateful! (I have very little experience with all that) Thanks a lot! [opensuse] sshd broke!!

All, I have a small fileserver that has been running 10.3 for a couple of months. I have easy physical access, but I normally ssh into it. Today I tried and it is failing to accept me. sshd is not even running on the server!!! When I try to start it I get: # rcsshd start Starting SSH daemonDisabling protocol version 2. Could not load host key sshd: no hostkeys available -- exiting. startproc: exit status of parent of /usr/sbin/sshd: 1 failed I assume I need to create a host key, but I don't know where it is kept on SuSE (10.3) Explicit (cut & paste) instructions appreciated. FYI: Glad this is not a remote server. I would not be happy if I had this happen in that situation. Could not find setarch utility neither in the standard repository, nor in any of the unofficial. Is there any reason why it not there, or probably it has another name here?
