[opensuse] mounting usb pendriver - openSUSE10.3 / vmware - dmesg doesn't show /dev/<what>
Hi experts. I have an OpenSUSE 10.3 distro runnung on vmware workstation 4.5.1 I recently enabled vmware to "Automatically connect new USB devices to this virtual machine when it has focus" Upon plugging in my 2GB Transcend Jetflash pendrive, dmesg does not give me a /dev/<what> device id for me to mount the device. Neither does the memory stick get automatically mounted. The following is the excerpt from "dmesg" output that pertains to the memory stick. usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4 usb 1-1: new device found, idVendor=058f, idProduct=6387 usb 1-1: new device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3 usb 1-1: Product: Mass Storage Device usb 1-1: Manufacturer: JetFlash usb 1-1: SerialNumber: HYO32GIV usb 1-1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice scsi5 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices usb-storage: device found at 4 usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning usb 1-1: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4 usb 1-1: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4 usb 1-1: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4 usb 1-1: reset full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4 usb-storage: device scan complete Can someone help me out with getting this (and I have another usb hard disk with 2 NTFS partitions) device mounted and usable. 1. What is the output of: lsusb after you plug the device in? 2. What is the output of fdisk -l before and after you plug the device in? Charles

The problem seems to be the same as with VirtualBox. Charles already told to add fstab entry. Next would be to create udev rule in /etc/udev/rules.d that will create and mount device when it is attached. Here is the thread: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse/2008-02/msg02994.html I have to go and update my Factory installation in VirtualBox so I can try to see what happens. -- Regards, Rajko. With udev rules I often tap in the dark :-( I already added some rules, but I was using some existing rule as template, look in 'man udev', 'man hald' and related articles to find what has to be chaged, if that was not clear from template. Later today I'll update 10.3 installation in VirtualBox and try to make my USB work. I need it for printer. After making this work I would have base idea what was wrong and this may help create rule for pendrive. I hope that Charles will come up with some idea. -- Regards, Rajko. Please check hal utilities. For instance hal-addon-storage to add usb drive. You can see what is recognized/configured with 'hald' using 'lshal'. They have respective manual pages. -- Regards, Rajko. Hi Charles, Rajko and everyone, I was finally able to resolve the issue by upgrading the vmware installation (to vmware workstation ACE 6.0.2 build-59824) on my host machine. However, I also note USB worked fine with Damn Small Linux live cd with my previous vmware workstation version (4.5.1). (that apparently does not use udev). Guess this is was an interoperability issue of some sort. Anyways, thanks all for the help and support. cheers -Varghese -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Strange, the mass storage modules are loaded. Have you used this drive before on another machine? I wonder if it is a hardware problem.

Yes, just like it is showing up in lsusb. I have no idea why nothing is showing up with fdisk. IIRC, you are doing this under vmware- I wonder if this is a vmware problem. I have no experience with vmware- I need to do some research. Just to be sure, you do have 3 hard drives attached to your computer? Charles

Hi Charles, Yes, the opensuse box is a box simulated using vmware.. not sure if this is a vmware issue. And yes, there are 3 hard drives connected (sda, sdb and sdc) directly to the box (not thru usb) is there some way I can use mknod or something to create the /dev/<> node for the usb device ? I was expecting to have a /dev/sdd node with which I can mount the usb device, but I couldn't see any nodes under /dev/<> which seemed like the one for the usb device. ( a couple of character device nodes exists though which seem to match the usbdevice ) -Varghese -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

udev should have taken care of that. I don't know what is wrong, but there is no harm trying manually: ,---- | mknod /dev/sdd b 8 48 | mknod /dev/sdd1 b 8 49 `---- Charles
