[opensuse] Adding RAM / Voltage adjustment?

All, We've been struggling with a couple of our machines that were attempting to add memory to. (ie. 2GB -> 4GB) The machines were just not stable after the upgrade. Assumed it was a Video Card logic issue, etc. Someone just told us that it is typical that the BIOS voltage setting for the memory bus has to be tweaked as you add RAM. ie. Lower for small amounts of RAM. Higher for bigger amounts. This is really strange to me, but we have adjusted those 2 machines and they are seemingly running fine now. Is this really a typical thing to have to do? [opensuse] pptp vpn and windows

Hi! I am running a pptpd server with the require-mppe-128 optin and a loaded ppp_mppe kernel module. If I set the "Dataencryption required" in the Windows XP VPN Setup Dialog, I got an error "the locale computer does not support the encryption type ..." [opensuse] Will there be a LTS version of OpenSuse?

Saying LTS I mean Long Term Support as ubuntu people do. I know there's SEL but I'm asking for the open Suse. I'm configuring a new webserver right now. And I'm seriosly thinking about waiting for the next ubuntu LTS. I always ran the machines longer than two years. Often the contract duration for the dedicated hardware is two years yet. And although upgrading worked so far for me there were always small changes which you couldn't see in advance, like postfix complaining about file permissions. I really enjoy OpenSuse but a life cycle of two years is - except for desktops - to short. Not every release has to be supported long term but what about every third? Couldn't the life cycle be 4.5 years? Am I the only one thinking like this? [opensuse] Set up a serial console on SuSE 10.3

Dear all, I'm currently trying to configure a SuSE 10.3 machine to use a serial console. I found a link on Novell's website explaining how to configure a serial console on SLES, but I've had to tweak a few steps and I still can't quite get things to work how I imagined they would. For what it's worth, the serial console runs at 9600. In /boot/grub/menu.lst, I added the two extra parameters to the first entry, it now looks like this: title openSUSE 10.3 - 2.6.22.17-0.1 root (hd0,1) kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22.17-0.1-default root=/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_ST340014A_5JXMH6N6-part2 vga=0x31a resume=/dev/sda1 splash=silent showopts console=tty0 console=ttyS0,9600 initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.22.17-0.1-default I've modified /etc/inittab and uncommented this line: cons:12345:respawn:/sbin/smart_agetty -L 9600 console and also added 'console' to /etc/securetty. When I reboot I can see output and once the system's up I can log in over the serial console. So far so good. However, the original instructions talk about adding these lines to /boot/grub/menu.lst: serial --unit=0 --speed=9600 terminal --timeout=15 serial console and commenting out the 'gfxmenu' entry. When I do this and reboot I get a 'Press any key to continue' scrolling up the screen (on the serial console), when I do press a key I DON'T see the grub menu, but once the timeout hits and the default entry starts to boot, I see the output on the serial console. It would be really great to see the grub menu through the serial console too. How do I do this? [opensuse] changed icon when USB flashdisk attached

Hello: The following occurs on openSUSE 10.3 with kde 3.5.7 "release 72.4" (on 3 different computers). I have a Kingston USB flashdrive. So far when I plugged the flashdisk in, the system recognized it and put it's icon on the desktop - an USB flashdisk icon. >From one day to the other this icon was changed to a camera icon. No matter which computer I plug the flashdiks in, the icon is camera icon instead of the flasdisk icon (that used to be before). What occured to the pendrive and how could I change back the icon? The change must have occured on the flashdrive since no matter which computer I plug the flashdisk in the same thing happens. TIA, IG Autót vásárol? [opensuse] One-click-install, which binary to choose?

Hi list, - if I wish to install, say, InkScape, I go to the OpenSuSE build/search for software page. I search for Inkscape and I get 39 binaries to choose from. I tend to select the first one listed. Although some time, that package does not nave the newest version number. What is the correct approach for selecting? [opensuse] Xen missing loader

I am trying to create a guest system using the "Create Virtual Machines" function under "Virtualization" in Yast. I have booted using the Xen kernel. In all cases, in using following the wizard, at some point the process ends with an error of missing a parameter which is "loader". Am I missing something in the Xen configuration or have I not installed all of the necessary programs? Thanks... [opensuse] openSUSE web start page

In Fedora 8, the web browser's home page redirects into http:// start.fedoraproject.org/ which is a start page for Fedora that includes the ability to search the web (it points to Google) and it also points to other links for Fedora users. Perhaps something similar could be done for openSUSE. Besides only offering a nice openSUSE-themed start page to surf the web, but it could also provide ways for normal users of openSUSE to easily get important info (like surveys, other announcements important for openSUSE users) that they might otherwise overlook on the wiki or on the openSUSE News website. I'm going to work on the idea. What do yall think?
