[opensuse] Open Project

Heh - just as a lark, I accidently clicked on the open project icon I had on my favorites. (This is the one which wasn't working previous: Well, it is working now. I went ahead and opened a few of my current project plans. Sure enough, they opened just fine. They were all originally created in MS Project. [opensuse] smart upgrade error

I just tried installing a package on my version of Linux (SLES 9) - I got the following result: rpm -i sysstat-5.0.1-35.1.i586.rpm error: Failed dependencies: gnuplot is needed by sysstat-5.0.1-35.1 Is there a command (except for rpm -i), to check for dependencies before I try to install a package ? [opensuse] g77 or gfortran for SuSE 10.3

I am trying to install R. I have downloaded R source from the official site http://cran.at.r-project.org/src/base/R-2/ The configuration procedure dies writing: configure: error: Neither an F77 compiler nor f2c found but actually f2c is installed: linux-Ciccia:/usr/local/bin/R-2.6.1 # which f2c /usr/bin/f2c I was told to install g77 or gfortran but I cannot find either one in SuSE 10.3 installation kit. Moreover, we would like to build a shared library of R (that is, get the option ./configure --enable-R-shlib) to work with 64 bit Linux We haven't been able to do that. Any clue, please ? [opensuse] error in the repository initialization

Whenever I launch Yast to install new s/w a arning pops up which reads "There was an error in the repository initialization. Valid metadata not found at specified URL(s) History: - Wrong checksum for patch-fetchmsttfonts.sh-4347.xml" Should I be concerned ? What does it imply ? What is the remedy, if any ? So, it is like it used to be, Carlos? Really no need for antivirus software? Interesting that the windows machines are being protected from themselve. I assume some distros must be weaker than others? Or why would clamav or antivir (Avira GmbH) been created. I'm probably sticking my foot in my mouth or worse my head where the sun doesn't bother shining, but I'm really curious as to clamav and antivir. [opensuse] openSUSE 10.3 and system maintenence processes

When a 10.3 system is installed, by default some things are set up that will result in a daemon or some other agent occasionally waking up and getting very busy. These activities can impact other running applications. I am hoping to make a list of these so that I can (1) decide if I need them and (2) figure out how to disable them. With full understanding that I live with whatever mess I create. My use for this is in a measurement system that probably does not need whatever these applications are doing. It definitely does not want the system sluggishness they sometimes create. So, here is a start at my list: opensuseupdater updatedb OK. Not so big a list. But I know there are more of these. I would be happy if anyone who knows of another would add them to the list. If possible, include the name of the package that installed it and, if known, the command to disable it from running. Thanks and my apologies about getting hot behind the collar. I misread you too. Now maybe you can give me some tips before I go out and buy a bunch of books. First, If I were to buy a book or two, what would you suggest? Second, there was a program on one of the other distros that I was experimenting with that made the font of the desktop more readable. Of course I can't remember it. Then it seems that everytime I use firefox I'm going to have to enlarge the fonts. Would opera browser be the same way? Or one of the other browsers? Thanks.
