Hi, I'm running OpenSUSE 10.2 on a dell 6400. [opensuse] KDE OR X HANGS

Hello, sometimes kde or x just hangs.... I can not even kill any kde programme after it happens. I am able to kill X by doing a "ctrl-alt-backspace", but after that, X doesn't restart - even if I change the runlevel from 5 to 3 and then to 5 again. After reinitialising runlevel 5, X simply won't start... If I try to restart the machine it hangs while trying to kill any programme started in the X-Shells... Also I can no more start any programme from within an X-Shell (xterm for instance). The TTY still works properly... But as I said killing the programmes that got stuck won't work, no matter where I apply the kill command. After all the proceedings kopete, kicker, amarok and all the X programmes still run (at least their processnumber gets listed on ps -a or top... But they don't actually do anything (they don't act or react anymore)). What can I do? For now I will just update every rpm-package I installed. Maybe that helps... Any other suggestions? Help is very much appreciated! PS: I am not able to provide you with any debug output, since I haven't seen anything suspicious. [opensuse] Drive assignments

I elect not to have HAL assign media as I load / connect it, which means I manually mount everything. I know that my dvd writers are /dev/hdb and /dev/sro, and that my sata drives are /dev/sda, for example. What devices does my Sansa mp3 player use? There are two of them, one for the player itself and another for the installed micro-SD chip. [opensuse] Scanning via network

I"m trying to help a friedn set up his computer on 10.2. He has a Canon MP600R printer, scanner, kitchen sink. It's set up as a network device, and connected to his router. We've setup network printing (using the Canon 4200 driver) and it works perfectly. The next step is the scanner. It is also a network device. I know the IP address of the scanner/printer (used it to configure the printer) but...... I don"t really know how to set up the scanner as a network device. The YAST scanner setup has an option to enable or use a network scanner, but it seems to be expecting a scanner daemon running on another server.... whatever the Canon scanner is doing, it seems that it isn't providing the right answer back... Has anyone else played with network scanners? and maybe got the scanner on the Canon MP600R working? [opensuse] Micro pauses, or CPU spikes?

I've been trying to chase down an extremely annoying problem I've been having. On what you could almost call heartbeat regularity, roughly once ever 2 to 3 seconds, my computer has been doing a micor-pause. One of the CPUs (AMD X2 3800+) spikes to 100% and everything freezes for a fraction of a second. You don't notice it unless you're watching a video file or playing a game... then it becomes annoying to the extreme. I don't have zmd installed.. or beagle... so I started looking into the processes running... stopping or killing one and seeing if it made a difference. I traced it down to ruby. If ruby is running I get the regular CPU spike. Kill it... problem is gone. I can't uninstall ruby without pulling down Amarok as well. Not much of an option. I know that Ruby is a scripting language... beyond that not a lot... question is, how is it that Ruby is killing my performance so much. If it's a scripting language.. what is it doing that spikes my CPU to 100%... or what would be using it and spiking the CPU with whatever it"s doing. Amarok hums along just fine with Ruby dead and gone.. no functionality is lost in Amarok - that I can see. Has anyone else noticed this issue? Any suggestions or ideas what is going on? [opensuse] Chameleon and Suse Menu

I'm using openSUSE 10.2 and can't seem to get the chameleon to display on the suse menu. If I switch to kde menu it shows fine, but I don't know of any setting to make it show when using the suse menu. also the top of the suse menu doesn't display properly, sorta like the graphics show up fuzzy with streaks through it... this also doesn't happen when using the kde menu...this same streaky fuzzyness also shows up just prior to the gui loading up, so I'm not sure if the problem is related, nor do I know how to take a screenshot or if it's even possible at that point in the boot process. I can email a screenshot directly to anyone interesting in seeing what I'm talking about. [opensuse] printer problem

HP 970Cxi, SuSE 9.3. Printer stopped printing after it ran out of paper. Yes, of course it has paper in it now. I have 2 of these printers, and neither one will print anymore, altho when I exchanged them, the system said "Found new hardware, do you want to configure it?" So I did, and it printed a test page. But now I can't seem to get back into the configuration, which must have some sort of problem, and the d....d Linux wants to open a wallet, whatever that means, and it wants a user name and a password, neither of which I know. (I never set up any wallet, or any password for that, as far as I recall.) This printer is connected via USB. Now what? Second printer problem: I would be happy to use my Laserjet, but for some reason the configuration says that YaST didn't set up HPLIP--it would seem that it can't--and when I try to test the configuration the print light on the Laserjet starts to flash, but it doesn't print anything either.
