[opensuse] Problem with mounting usb-storage device

I need to automatically mount a usb-storage device on plugin on a server (openSUSE 10.2). I have installed ivman for this an let it run by init. I added a hal policy to merge storage.policy.should_mount=true for usb storage devices (Shouldn't this be standard behaviour?). Now ivman tries to mount /dev/sda1 using halmount. But halmount gives the message "/dev/sda1: hal-storage-removable-mount refused uid 0" and doesn't mount the device. What can I do to convince ivman to mount the device? Is the default ivman configuration in openSUSE 10.2 restricted to auto mounting CDs and DVDs for non root users? [opensuse] 10.0 to 10.2 Upgrade experience

I finally got around to downloading OpenSuSE 10.2, and upgrading my machine at work (old Dell Optiplex GX-150). The following are just a few comments on my upgrade experience (which was a lot better than some of the other stories I've seen on this list over the past several months). - graphical install didn't work as it said "you don't have enough memory or X windows could not be started"; no big deal, just used the text-based install (w/ no mouse) - online update worked fine during the install, and so far no problems updating after the upgrade either - I left it overnight while it was installing packages and when I came in this morning, the screen was now in a graphical install mode; curious... - it chose the wrong video card, and does not seem to let me choose a different one - even from YAST after the upgrade (this seems very odd); but it's just onboard video, and it appears to be working just fine - all of my prior settings are still there, and with what little poking around I have done so far, everything else seems to be working All in all I thought it was a pretty painless upgrade! [opensuse] Blackberry 7100 Series & (openSuSE) Linux 10.2

Hi, I have a friend whom I'm helping make the transition to Linux (openSuSE 10.2). He has a 7100-series Blackberry he'd like to sync with that system. Searching with Google has turned up nothing definitive, but left me with the impression that it might be possible to use this device on Linux (I say that in part because a lot of the hits I got were not in English, so I was left with only a vague impression about what they said). So in fact there are two questions: 1) Is there a way to use a Blackberry 7100 on openSuSE 10.2? It doesn't have to be a stock solution complete with RPMs, we can build the software if necessary (and if it's open source). Ideally integration with the KDE PIM software (KOrganizer, KAddressBook, etc.) is what he's looking for, especially since he's adopted KMail, but something stand-alone might be acceptable. 2) Does anyone know if VMware intends to adapt their software (specifically, VMware Server) to accommodate the USB changes that first appeared in openSuSE 10.2 and that rendered all USB devices unusable in VMware guest VMs? (I'm aware of the option to rebuild a kernel with the requisite USB support reenabled, and we'll do that if necessary.) Thanks. Don't quote me on this but I believe you need a piece of RIM software to get it working. It is indeed possible to do, but I am pretty sure you need a third party RIM software to get it to sync properly with Linux. Once you do that, I recommend using Evolution. The KOrganizer and KAddressBook are fine but I personally prefer Evolution. If you like that others, that's cool, I think they'll work all the same in the end. I've set up a minimal bind installation using yast on 10.2 which seems to do the job quite well for DNS servicing my local network. Now I want to add a host name, two actually, 1) to resolve to a specific public IP in another city, and one to point to an internal machine on my network. In the past, putting these in the hosts file of the server running bind would work, but this seems broken in my setup. [opensuse] no graphics with IBM Netvista

Hello, I installed Suse 10.2 on an IBM Netvista (from 2003) with onBoard graphics. I have a 1280x1024 Monitor, but Suse only boots in text mode (it starts init 5, but that doesn't work then, I just get the text prompt). Typing "init 5" does nothing (prompt appears again, it seems it is in "5" but shows only text-mode). "init 3" shuts down kdm services etc., then "init 5" says "run level 5 has been reached" - but no graphics... Typing "startx" gives ... (EE) No Video BIOS modes for chosen depth. (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Fatal server error: no screens found. XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X Server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining. I cannot start Sax2. I cannot use the Monitor section of Yast (it doesn't do anything). I cannot boot "failsave" to graphics mode. I tried to play around with different BIOS video settings (there's not much to change), but no difference so far... I cannot iterpret what Sax.log wants to tell me - more than 1000 lines that are just cryptic to me... I've put the log here: http://www.daniel-bauer.com/test/SaX.log What must I do to get it running? How can I change the settings, when neither Sax nor Yast/Monitor nor boot option vga=normal works? Can you help me? Hi. On my SuSE 10.2 I have something, that is not ok with k3b. I'm receiving this message: Unable to find growisofs executable K3b uses growisofs to actually write dvds. Without growisofs you will not be able to write dvds. Make sure to install at least version 5.10. Solution: Install the dvd+rw-tools package. The installed package is 7.0-0.pm.1 I call k3b with kedsu. Without any options, it will rebuild the default initrd using the modules of the default kernel. Just su to root, then mkinitrd. I am getting confused as to your exact problem (obviously some kind of boot problem). Do you get a grub menu? That means your Bios has found your disk, loaded the Grub stage 1, which loads stage 1.5 to be able to read the files on the filesystem in the boot directory, and loads stage 2 and you see a menu. You enter or it times out to an entry and loads the initrd and kernel and you boot.
