Bad blocks on a ReiserFS volume. How to retrieve files?

I have a large hard-disk (120 GB) on which some blocks went bad. Now, it cannot be mounted. Attached is what debugreiserfs says. What can I do; I'm newbie to reiserfs architecture. I thought that ReiserFS keeps copies of the superblock or something, like ext2/3 does. reiserfsck says "error occured looks like hardware problem. bread cannot read block 13271040". That's the actual number it displays. PS I have asked the same question on the reiserfs-list, but it's extremely low traffic. Maybe someone here knows more. Sorry SuSE: 9.1 is Waste of time and money!

I am sorry to conclude that my upgrade from SuSE 9.0 Pro to 9.1 Pro has been waste of time and money for me, so far. The same I have to say about the free SuSE "Installation support". The reason is that my SuSE 9.1 installation only detects 1 of my 3 SCSCI devices (as I wrote in another subject on this forum: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-May/3254.html) Yamaha 4416S CDRW recorder detected HP DVD Writer 100i NOT detected Epson 1640SU scanner NOT detected It's rather stupid. I have installed 9.1 using the DVD disk just in the HP DVD drive, but after the installation of 9.1, the KDE/Konqueror /media/recorder cannot access it and YaST2 cannot install additional software from it. Only one "Cdrecorder" is found in My computer and that is the Yamaha 4416 drive, which the KDE/Konqueror file manager assign as /media/recorder11. I am sure 9.1 is the reason, as I hadn't this problems with 9.0. I have tried both an update and two several new installation of 9.1. Neither SJDS nor Windows on the same multiboot PC have problems to detect these devices. In my opinion SuSE should therefore debug 9.1 better and longer, and not leave the problems to the customers. I see SuSE notes on their web saying that they know SCSI scanners are not detected in 9.1. But regarding my HP DVD writer problem, the SuSE support (as usual) don't take the responsibility and argue that this problem (a combination of IDE disk and SCSI devices) isn't included in their free installation support! This sounds remarkable, and I have never had a modern PC of so simple model or configuration that it has fitted the limited rules for the free installation support. Terje J. Hanssen

[SLE] RealPlayer G2 on SuSe 6.2

Yesterday, I finally got sound going on my Linux setup. I downloaded RealPlayer G2 and it worked beautifully. Today, RealPlayer run but no sound coming out. All other sound functions still work. I can still play my CD, have system sound BUT no sound when I run RealPlayer. /var/log/message said kernel: Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error? but KDE sound still work. I have re-installed RealPlayer 3 times now, still no sound when I run the RealPlayer. Any help is appreciated. Mount Windows NT(NTFS) drive as drive Z: for all users

Adding fonts?

Hi all, Reading some mails on the GIMP mail list, I ran across the procedure to install some more fonts for not only Gimp, but the system and StarOffice to use also. Well, I installed the fonts, went to the shell and issued the command xset fp+ <font directory> and then the rehash command and all fonts are there! Ok, that went well, but each time I restart the system, I have to do it all over again? [opensuse] Partition Resizing

I've been running OpenSuse 10.1 and subsequently 10.2 on a dual boot machine for some time now quite successfully. I'd like to ditch the Windows partition(s) altogether given that it hasn't been used for over 6 months and I can do everything I need to on OpenSuse. Is it possible to simply remove the Window partitions and reallocate to OpenSuse? Partition info: /dev/hda Disk 37.2G /dev/hda1 HPFS/NTFS 35G 18G 18G 50% /windows/C /dev/hdb Disk 74.5G /dev/hdb1 HPFS/NTFS 29G 25G 3.5G 88% /windows/D /dev/hdb2 Extended 33.3G /dev/hdb6 Linux Native 13G 8.6G 4.2G 68% / /dev/hdb7 Linux Native 19G 17G 2.3G 89% /home Ideally I would like to reallocate /dev/hdb1 to /dev/hdb2 then /dev/hdb7 Is this possible to do without loosing my / and /home data and if so which would be the most suitable tool. The Yast2 partition tool will not for example allow me to edit /dev/hdb2.

[opensuse] Install SuSE 102 along side 10.1 - What happens?

Hello: I'm writing in an attempt to understand how the SuSE installer will accommodate my existing installation. Background: (1) I have SuSE 10.1 successfully installed. (2) I have three hard drives connected: - /dev/sda : the "main" hard drive with SuSE 10.1 and swap - /dev/sdb : a new drive that is blank - /dev/sdc : data (3) I want to leave my SuSE 10.1 intact (untouched) on sda and want to install SuSE 10.2 on sdb. OK, the easy part. I can boot from the SuSE 10.2 DVD and install on sdb. This should be a piece of cake. Presumably an install of SuSE 10.2 on sdb will not touch sda or sdc. Now, the question -- what happens to the boot sequence?? For my setup today (if I understand this properly), I'll boot from sda. Upon boot the master boot record (MBR) will be read from sda and will launch grub on /dev/sda2/boot. The menu.lst file will define the "presets" and default that I have. What happens when I install SuSE 10.2 on sdb? - Will the machine still load the MBR from sda? [I think this is a hardware/BIOS issue?] - Will the machine still load grub from /dev/sda2/boot? - What will happen to my existing menu.lst file? Will it be overwritten (to only contain a 10.2 option) or will it be modified/appended (10.1 and 10.2 options)? The bottom line is that I don't much care, but I do want the option to boot into my working/existing 10.1 versus my experimental 10.2 setup. Will the install program handle this for me? Will I need to make some manual configuration changes after the SuSE 10.2 install? Thank you. KDE Remote Desktop (VNC) troubles

Hello all, I'm repeating this question and I'd really appreciate any help. I cannot connect to a remote server via KDE Remote Desktop Connection anymore. When trying, I got an error: Connection failed, server does not accept new connections On a server there is: - no krfb processes - netstat -anp | grep 590 returns: tcp 0 0 :::5900 :::* LISTEN 2030/kdeinit: kded therefore someone is waiting for connection - this is SuSE 9.0 Is there a way to restart KDE's VNC on this server without restarting KDE completely? [opensuse] Kaffeine/DVD

"The source can't be read. Maybe you don't have enough rights for this, or source doesn't contain data (e.g: no disc in drive). (Error reading from DVD.)" When I try to watch some DVD's in Kaffeine I get the above error message. [ Region 1] [ 10.2 ] It seems that the ones that do this open to a folder called video_ts in Konq. Inside the folder are what I assume are the movie files [ ifo, bup, and vob files ] Konq just lists them as type:unknown. Mediaplayer says there is no media on the disk Some will play through the FBI anti-copy message then stop in Kaffeine. I have watched some of these movies on my other computer with Kaffeine just fine. [ 10.1 and 10.0 ] I just finished watching another DVD on this machine without any hitches. [ Region 3 which brings up another question ] I've downloaded and installed all the Kaffeine and xine updates from Packman. Installed libdvdcss. I've read everything on the wiki and some other sites dealing with playing DVD's in Kaffeine and don't see anything I missed installing. Is there something I just overlooked? About the other question: In a certain Windows DVD player it said that if I watched three DVD's from a certain region it would "lock" into that region only. [opensuse] gdm / xorg issues: x server already running?

Whenever I start my desktop (running OpenSuse 10.2 with XGL), it shows the nVidia logo startup screen, then goes to this funky blue/black gdm error message saying "There already appears to be an X server running on display :0." And then it asks if it should try restarting X on display :0 again. Whether I say Yes or No, the screen goes blank for a second and then the normal gdm login screen comes up... it's very odd b/c it works, but for some reason appears to be called too early or something.... I've already tried just reinstalling gdm and xorg server packages... I know little about php - I use this language because I started with a php script from an other source (but had then, alas, to rewrite it almost entirely). Does anyone know of any other software than the simply label maker for Linux that is available from Lightscribe? It is marginal....that is, it works fine, but the features are less than "modest." I've check all commercial listings I can find, and of course, they're all brain dead and only support MickySoft with a few MAC offerings. Thanks! [opensuse] OpenOffice "crashes" on exit from slideshow

Hi all, I have SuSE 10.2 installed, and have just noticed that if I present a slideshow in OpenOffice (the version bundled with 10.2) the thing "crashes" when you exit a slideshow. It's curious, it doesn't seem to die per se, nor do any damage, but it insists that it crashed and must recover the file. Maybe it really did crash, but the file didn't really need recovery, since no changed had been made. It doesn't (so far at least) seem to damage anything, but it's a bit odd, and slightly worrying.
