x server problem

Hello guys, I am having a bit of a problem getting a proper graphical session on an IBM desktop with an LCD monitor. Here is a line from the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file outlining the device Section "Device" BoardName "i845" BusID "0:2:0" Driver "i810" Identifier "Device[0]" VendorName "Intel" Option "DPMS" Option "May_Need_ForceBIOS" "1" EndSection Option "DPMS" Option "May_Need_ForceBIOS" "1" these lines were added from a Mandriva 2007 live cd that worked at low res and depth conf file to get it going, but it only works at 8 bit depth rate which is awful and barely readable. When I try to change it in Sax2 I get an error message telling me to look at a log file. This symbol is very important to me, it means Chinese money, RMB or CNY. I use it everyday on OOCalc. How do I enter this symbol? The old way is to keep it in tomboy (a memo application) and copy & paste it to OOCalc when I need it. Windows (Chinese version) has a special feature to enter this symbol easily. Other symbols I don't know how to enter in Linux are: 1. 、 2. 《》 These symbols are very frequently used Chinese punctuations. They are all available in Windows as 'software keyboard' that when enabled, each key is replaced by a Chinese punctuation. Thanks to this interesting feature, currently no Chinese keyboard actually implement these punctuations as separate key. P.S. I tried to look for them in char-map but is not able to find them easily. The way I keep using is google-for-it-and-copy&paste. P.S. Use UTF-8 charset if you cannot see my example punctuations correctly. Request: rebuild of Suse 10.1 ISO after revision of online update

Andreas, I don't know if I should place this request here or somewhere else, but after purchasing a boxed Suse 10.1 and still fighting with update servers not responding and Online Update not working properly, I am eagerly anticipating the "new yast2-online-update with an enhanced callback handling" (https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=194424#c21). I have a whole batch of machines to install in my university group and I am dreading it, because of the painfull process of initial installation and patch. What I would love to have is a new ISO for 10.1 with all patches applied up to a certain date, especially including libzypp, zmd and YOU patches. I typically buy the Suse release from April/May and test it over the summer before my students and research group (now also colleagues) will install it in their machines. I write a small step-by-step instruction, so all machines have the same settings. But I have been holding off this year, because the patching part of the process has been non-reproducible to say the least. Assuming the revised versions of the patch tools work well, it will still be a chore to start the installation of 10.1 from the original DVD and to bring it up to a stable and patched state that will take us with relatively little trouble through the academic year, as I have been doing in the past. I don't want to start experimenting with 10.2, even if it ends up with a better update process, because I won't have time for it during classes. So, I wish I could download a new 10.1 ISO with applied patches that will make the installation process smooth as it was in other versions. Actually, I would be ready to pay for it. Do you think this is possible, Andreas? Windows Ate A GRUB

(I posted this on LQ but have yet to recieve a response...) Help, I've got a very bizarre error going on. I installed SUSE 10.1 on a new laptop some time ago. It is a Gateway 280m TabletPC which came installed with Windows NT Tablet Edition. All has been running for the most part since install. Ive got SMART running the show and it has been fine. I wanted to install the touch screen part of the system (stupid me) and had to reboot to Windows (first time) in order to determine what the screen was. (Gateway informed me that they design the hardware for Windows XP so dont support Linux. Yes, I wrote them.) I exited windows, and then on reboot, I cannot load anything. I get the message, "GRUB loading stage 1.5" then the machine goes into an endless cycle of rebooting. I did some searching and found some Ubuntu solutions. I loaded both SUSE and Ubuntu live DVDs and tried fiddling around with things. I cannot seem to get the grub.conf file to load. I did load SUSEs rescue system on the DVD. I tried to fix the boot loader, but go the following error: GNU GRUB version 0.97 (640K lower / 3072K upper memory) [Minimal BASH-like editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. SuSE QEMU & Windows XP guest

I want to switch all my computers to SuSE, but there are still some programs I need, which are running under Windows. I would like to find somebody who is using SuSE as host and Windows XP as guest, who can give me some hints. Some of the questions are: 1. How to set it up? 2. Can I do a pre-work and set it up under XP first and use the image than later under SuSE? 3. I have some programs, e.g. Rosetta Stones which requires a key which is different with each installation. How will this be with QEMU? If I use this QEMU image on another computer? and if I use this image (if possible) under another host? 4. I need to have network access 5. I need to have USB support (camera, card readers, scanner, phone, iPod), which I cannot yet or some never move to Linux. 6. I want to use samba with the host and with my other servers. 7. I want to use for all kind of "data" a hard disk (or space on a server), so that the images are always "clean" and can be reused without data. Personal settings are ok. [opensuse] eject a DVD without Gnome/KDE

Hi, we are running SuSE 10.1 with a variety of window managers like ctwm, fvwm2, enlightment etc. and are using ivman (now working :-)) for automounting CDs/DVDs. How are users supposed to eject a DVD after it has been mounted? After ivman has mounted a DVD, the eject button on the drive doesn't react and the eject command refuses to work. Even if we add users to group audio, so that they can execute eject, it fails with galois [8:55] fst 1010) eject /media/CDROM/ umount: /dev/hdc is not in the fstab (and you are not root) eject: unmount of `/dev/hdc' failed So how do we get the DVD out of the drive when mounting with ivman? I have a dual opteron system running OpenSuse 10.1 and it has aa very bad habit of hanging. With hang I mean that it's nothing on the screen, no oops, sysrq s,e,i,u,m,t doesn't do anything but b did reboot, sometimes at least. [opensuse] missing ksyms form my kernel

Hi, I downloaded and compiled a 2.6.16 vanilla kernel from kernel.org for my suse 10.1 box. Now I am trying to compile and install some drivers/modules for this kernel. Everything goes well and the drivers/modules get generated and produce some RPMS for me to install. The problem I run into is that when I try to install the RPM packages I get a missing rpm dependency. error: Failed dependencies: ksym(schedule) = 1000e51 is needed by There is a suse kernel-syms rpm which will probably solve this if I where using the suse kernel. But I am using a vanilla kernel from kernel.org. Any clues on how to generate a kernel and kernel-syms rpm on my suse box from a vanilla source kernel?
