So - now to your problem. I do not know from your post, but I guess you used konqueror to browse to the packman repo and then right-clicked the file which for some reason did not work. I cannot help you there, since I never did that. But you could try it out this way 1. Load down the w 32 codec rpm file to the disk 2. In a text console go to the directory where you saved the rpm file 3. Change to user root 4. Do 'rpm -Uvh w32codec-all-20060611-0.pm.0.i586.rpm' (without the quotes), this installs the codecs on your computer 5. In order to check if it is really installed you could do 'rpm -qa | fgrep w32' (but if rpm does not show an error, I never encountered a case where the package was not installed, so this is probably not necessary) If that does not help, please make sure you have all the needed packages. If you have all the needed packages and it still does not work, please provide some more details and maybe someone knows the answer. Caching DNS server in Suse 10.1

Hi All I am in Taiwan, and the internet service really sucks. I can do a speed test from my ISP, hinet.net, and get the 8 Mbps they say they are providing. If I try the DSL speed tests from the servers in San Francisco or Los Angeles, I get, if I am luck, 1 Mbps. I have noticed that most of the time is waiding while looking up the site. Got some IP addresses of those site, and enter them in the web browser, and it goes about 10 times or more faster. It appears most of the time is for DNS lookup. Now my Question. Would setting up a caching DNS server help this situation and if so, does anyone have any guidance in doing this? I have checed out the DNS setup, etc. before, and find it very confusing, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Art

[opensuse] ssh to a machine, run bash with some commands, keep bash running?

I want to be able to do something like this: me@hostA> ssh user@hostB somecommand Where the end result is that somecommand runs and _I am still logged in to hostB_, running bash as if I had done these commands: me@hostA> ssh user@hostB user@hostB> somecommand user@hostB> I want "somecommand" to set up some aliases and stuff like that, but not require any files on hostB. The closest I've been able to come is: me@hostA> ssh -t user@hostB bash --login -c "somecommand" This connects to hostB, does the standard login stuff, runs the command, and bash exits. If it would do all that but leave bash running, I'd be happy. I think I can make it work by putting somecommand into a file named "somescript" and doing two commands: me@hostA> scp somescript user@hostB: me@hostA> ssh -t user@hostB bash --login --rcfile somescript ... but I haven't tried that, and I'd rather find a way to do it without requiring files, if possible. Windows install *after* Linux

It's fairly straightforward to install Windows and then install Linux. But what is not so straightforward is to do Linux first. I got into that situation because my Windows partition was clobbered but my Linux was still working perfectly. I went through the Windows CD install, but afterwards I got an "invalid partitioning" message when Windows rebooted after the first phase of its install. I've googled "windows xp install SLE site:lists.suse.com" but could not find anything useful. To make matters worse, the Windows partition is a logical, not a primary. Should I just give up and install everything from scratch, Linux as well as Windows? Fortunately this system doesn't yet have any data that I need to preserve. Paul

[opensuse] problem with mysql installation on suse es 9

hi, I instaled mysql using yast. then, following a book, initilized tables by # /usr/bin/mysql_install_db Grant tables are installed corretly becaus I got the message on screen I supposed to get. I started mysql # /etc/init.d/mysql start Ok. But, when I tried to verify that the server is running # mysqladmin version I got 'error: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (using Password: NO)' I didn't create password for root and when I tried with #mysqladmin -u root password 'MyPasssword' I got the same error. What I did wrong? device partitition for a powerful terminal server?

Hello. I am preparing a terminal server for 10 users to use through X terminal. They need to store around 300GB data shared by everybody (probably I can keep them in /var/shared, most of which are movies, multimedia, sound, books) and further 100GB data for all users' own data (a.k.a. /home folder should be no less then 100GB). I can choose to buy 720GB SATA or SCSI harddisk, but I think it might be better to get two 320GB SATA disk, for my old knowledge of IDE, arrange files on more then two harddisk would be faster. e.g. swap can be on the other disk then where /usr is. How do you think? Besides, has SCSI significant advantage over SATA? If I buy two harddisks, what's the best way to partition them? My idea: disk0 (320G) => partition0 = / (60G) partition1 = /home (260G) disk1 (320G) => partition0 = swap (2G, because we got 2G memory) partition2 = /var (300G) Just ask for correction and advices before I really try it. Yast2 Segfault

SuSE 10.1 x86_64 has been running fairly smoothly for me. Although I never succeeded in getting either YOU or the Novell updater thing to work properly. I have been able to update via Yast2's "Software management" until today. Now when I choose the updates and select "Accept" Yast2 segfaults with the error: sbin/yast2: line233: 3343 Segmentation fault $ybindir/yastbase menu ncurses $NCTHREADS I seem to recall that someone else here had this, or a similar problem with Yast2 crashing, but I have been unable to locate anything in the list archives. Can anyone offer any suggestions or pointers on how to resolve this issue? TIA Dave

Several problems with a 10.1 install.

Folks, I've just installed open 10.1 and am having a heap of problems with it. I tried installing the suse nvidia drivers and that's resulted in a blank screen each time, so I've gone to fail safe and changed the xorg.conf back to the original one. I try to update the packages and get dependency conflicts that I can't resolve (particularly patch:libzypp-1533-0.noarch) that I can't not install. Software Manager thinks it starts but nothing shows up on the screen... Very annoying as I really want my company to move away from Red Hat and Windows to SUSE, but not a really good demo at this stage. Any ideas anyone? Especially on the software manager. Because that's not working I had to install the nvidia drivers using rpm, so that may be the problem there I guess. Thanks. Peter. -- Use Computes?.... ...Think IT!

Hello community, Yesterday we announced release of Beryl 0.1.0. Beryl is a fork of compiz maintained by the community at www.beryl-project.org. Beryl and Compiz gives the bling to your desktop making it fun to use. The packages are available for SUSE 10.1/SLE10 and openSUSE Factory/10.2.
