[SLE] Software management

Hi After installing Suse Linux 10.1 i installed a few extra packges from the dvd and yast2 software management worked fine. I then added a local mirror for updates as one was not added during install. I then ran an online update using yast2 and installed only 2 packages, libzypp and yast2online i think it was. After the online update and on rebooting my yast2 software management will not open when i click on the icon. I also try : "yast -i xmms No such client module sw_single Run 'yast2 -h' for help on usage" Any pointers please ? Mark

[opensuse] No Screensavers

Set screensavers to run random after five minutes . But after five minutes Monitor screen goes dark and no screensaver, what gives?? [SLE] "Permission denied" on CDs - 64 bit SUSE 10.1

I've just noticed something curious, with my 64 bit SUSE 10.1 system. When I insert a CD-ROM into the drive, the usual KDE Daemon panel pops up, asking what I want to do. I select "Open in New Window", but then get "Permission Denied". This does not happen on a 32 bit 10.1 system, where the CD opens normally. Any idea where I might look for the cause of this problem? tnx jk

[SLE] Is there any real purpose for hald on a server-only system?

I've quickly had a look at what hal is all about, and it seems to me that it's primarily for making things easier for users on a desktop, whereas it makes little or no sense on a server system? [SLE] nvidia driver problems

Dear List, Just a quick heads-up on the new nvidia driver, x86_64-1.0-8762. I just recently installed 10.1 on my home box, AMD x86_64, GeForce FX5700 ULtra, with a Nokia 445Xi+ monitor. To my surprise the latest nvidia driver did not perform. I was unable to get 1600x1200 resolution at 16.7 mio. colors and 3D acceleration to work. Only going back to the previous nvidia driver, x86_64-1.0-8756, got my system back in the shape it used to be for the past several years. [SLE] Linux Shield Problem

[SLE] Package management

If I go to YaST, Installation Source, I have a number of installation sources, because that is where I have been adding them. If I go to System, Configuration, Install Software menu option and Configure, then I have no catalogs and no services. I thought these two installers were meant to synchronise the installation sources? Have I done something wrong? Is there a way to synchronise them or do I have to duplicate the installation sources? [SLE] SMB Share Time Stamp

Hello, I don't think this is an issue with SMB specific to SuSE 10.1 as I found the got the same result when I accessed the Windows share from a laptop I have Fedora Core 5 running on. But since SuSE 10.1 Open is what I am running on my main computer, I am asking the question here. The issue I have is that the time stamp on all the folders is Wed 31 Dec 1969 5:00:00 PM MST and this is the time stamp that is picked up when I move the folders from the Windows XP computer to my SuSE system (or Fedora Core 5). A directory on the WindowsXP box shows the correct time stamps spreading over the past 6 years. The Windows box and the Linux computers are all on the same subnet and all have the same "clock" time (although not sychcronized but within a minute of each other). Anybody have any idea of how to resolve this issue. I know you can put an time offset in the smb.conf file but this is not an offset issue as the time stamp on viewing the share is constant regardless of time or day of week. Would appreciate any guidance on this. Tempted to blame Winders on this as a XP issue but who knows? Thanks. [SLE] Partitioning in SuSE (or in general)

Hi, I want to have 2 SuSE installations on my harddrive, and use Grub to decide which to boot. My hd is currently partitioned into 2 windows partitions, a swap, and Reiser partition with /. I shrunk the Reiser partition (I have good backups, so I thought I could risk this), and tried to create a new partition. Apparently the limit of primary partitions is 4, and I already have 4. Same for extended partitions, and logical partitions can only be in extended partitions, and I have no extended partitions. At least, this is what the error message says. My problem is, I really don't know when to use primary partitions, extended partitions or logical partitions, so I have no idea how to go about solving this. Any advice on how to do this, but also more general information on what each type of partition is good for, is what I am looking for.
