quick question about checking time

If I want to get my server to periodically check against a time server, is it just a question of adding ntpd into cronjob or is there more to it (parameters, gotchas, etc?) Thanks John

Xen for a dummy (me)

Today I set out to learn Xen. I have SuSE 10.1 (64 bit), up-to-date via zmd, on a Dell Precision 490 (2 Dual-core Xeons). Among other documentation, I read what I could find at http://en.opensuse.org/Installing_Xen3. I then proceeded by Enabling Xen in Yast2 and rebooting. (During the reboot I took a detour through my BIOS setup and enabled Virtualization Support.) In GRUB, I select the default XEN kernel and booted. 1) My graphical boot turned textual. No big deal, but why? 2) The boot was roughly three times slower than usual. ?? 3) X didn't start. After a seemingly normal start, Xorg.0.log ends with: (**) NVIDIA(0): Depth 24, (--) framebuffer bpp 32 (==) NVIDIA(0): RGB weight 888 (==) NVIDIA(0): Default visual is TrueColor (==) NVIDIA(0): Using gamma correction (1.0, 1.0, 1.0) (**) NVIDIA(0): Enabling RENDER acceleration (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module! (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting *** (II) UnloadModule: "nvidia" (II) UnloadModule: "ramdac" (II) UnloadModule: "fb" (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Fatal server error: no screens found 4) I have no network devices. Eth0 have failed to start. After this, I quickly reverted to a normal (non-xen) boot, and all was normal. (Pfui.) After a lot of google and browsing on the Xen subject, I still don't understand if I'm doing anything wrong or what else is missing. I guess nvidia isn't working since the needed kernel module isn't provided for the xen kernel (I use precompiled nvidia rpms), but on the rest of theproblems I feel clueless. Any hints...? -- !++ ! 9.1 update mirror -- getting file limits with gzip

Hello, Doe anyone know of a Suse 9.1 mirror that is still up? I have a kernel, 2.6.5-7.257-smp, x86_64, and I'd like to update to see if it corrects a problem with gzip which is only able to zip up to 2.0 Gb before giving the following error; "6910 file limit exceeded". Thank you in advance, James

Konqueror Hijacked ?

Hi, I'm using SuSE 10.1 with KDE, and Konqueror, 3.5.1 and when I try to acesse www.amazon.com i?m hijecked to "http://ad.doubleclick.net/adi/amazon.pilot/;type=inv_pixel;sz=1x1;ord=705?". When I use Firefox, that doesn't happen. Is this my first virus ? Regards Lívio Cipriano

[opensuse] su not resetting PATH anymore?

Hi, in SuSE 9.0 "su" resets the PATH and then sets it to some value for root. Especially, the "." entry (that the users had) disappeared. Calling "su" in SuSE 10.1 does not reset the path anymore, and so root suddenly has "." in his path, although CWD_IN_ROOT_PATH is set to no. This is really really bad because you don't expect it. "su -l" is not a good alternative because it changes you current directory. Can I revert to the old behaviour of su? YAST Totally Screwed Up

Any attempt to add/remove or update software causes Yast to crash. Have tried repair from the 10.1 boot DVD, but this also crashes Yast when checking the packages. I suspect that the package database has been corrupted in some way, but rpm --rebuilddb does not help. Is there any way to fix this, other than the Windows way of reinstalling? Dave

Just wondering if you have done the following from opensuse.org BEFORE YOU INSTALL READ THIS: The package manager in SUSE 10.1 is regrettably broken on most systems. To correct this you should do the following after you have installed SUSE: Open Yast chose "online update configuration" , click next and wait until finished. Press the updater icon on you taskbar/panel If it updates, congratulations, all is well. If it throws up an error. Close it. Follow the instructions in this SDB article or this mail. at http://en.opensuse.org/Download I just installed 10.1 and yast is working. KWiFiManager, SUSE 10.1 and ThinkPad R31

I am running SUSE 10.1 on an IBM ThinkPad R31. I have been trying, without success, to use KWiFiManager to configure the built in wireless adapter. When I try to connect to a known AP, I get an error message "Aborting network switching due to invalid WEP key specification." In the configuration editor, when I click on "Activate", I get several error messages, including: SSID could not be set Operation mode could not be set Speed settings could not be set Encryption settings could not be set Power management settings coud not be set So, it appears that I cannot configure anything with KWiFiManager. Also, prior to running SUSE 10.1, I could use WLAN Assistant, but that no longer works either. any ideas? tnx jk

The default loader screen on the CD looks a lot like the default loader screen of installed SUSE - that pretty blue screen with four or five selections in the middle... If you aren't paying attention, you could imagine you're looking at the usual installed-SUSE startup selection screen. The default action of the screen from the CD is to load from hard disk, so unless you are paying attention and override that by selecting one of the other options, the system loads the preliminaries from the CD (not your hard disk), waits the few seconds for the timeout, doesn't get a keypress or mouse-click from you, and starts the default selection... which is your already installed SUSE 10. SuSE Restart vs Shutdown

Yesterday I wanted to boot from a CD so I checked to "restart" option. The system rebooted and at the correct point I got into the BIOS to make sure the CDROM would be the boot device. Then when it got to the point of rebooting the computer ended up in SuSE 10. I then told SuSE to "turn off the computer", which it did. After powering on the computer if booted off the CDROM. My question: Does SuSE somehow force the computer to bypass the boot sequence set in the BIOS when it is told to "restart"? If so, anyone know how this is done?
