I just went through the steps of upgrading two of my machines to Xorg 7.1. And it seems to run fine, after fumbling my way through it on one the second was much easier to complete. I do have a couple of issues, nothing imparing the day to day operations of the box itself, but both a pain. First, Cntrl-Alt-F[0-9] do not seem to work. No alternate consoles what so ever. I have Googled and not find anything that seems to be a match. I found a couple people mentioning that Cntrl-Alt-Bkspc no longer functioned, but that is actually working for me. This is on both of the systems where I tried the upgrade. Second, for some reason x11vnc, although working in that it runs and I can connect to the display, will not allow mouse or keyboard input. I even grabbed the source and compiled, same results. This is a bit of a pain as I often am at my wife's desk in another part of the house and like to bring my live display back there. I have even tried using krfb, which although allowing keyboard/mouse input, for some reason keeps disconnecting within 10 seconds using tight vncviewer on windows... Not sure if this is both systems as I typically do not vnc into my laptop... Any suggestions or pointers to reading would be appreciated. Thanks! Michael

Things that one needs to consider in looking at surge protectors vs UPS are: - what happens to your system if power is interrupted? Can your system survive intact with no file damage if the power is suddenly interrupted? If not, buy a UPS. You use Reiserfs? Maybe XFS? Buy a UPS. Also, I have, on two occasions, had customers who were able to replace damaged equipment and have their UPS repaired under the UPS warranty. In those cases, the warranty provided for replacement of up to US$50,000 of damaged equipment that was connected to the UPS. As for battery replacement, one UPS company here in the US that imports its stuff from China has a 3 year, all inclusive warranty that basically says that if the unit quits for any reason, send it back and they will fix it for free. I have taken them up on their offer three times (for clients). They replaced the bad batteries and did circuit upgrades, all free. What a deal. So, the $125 or so that it cost to buy it was a bargain in the long run. Always surge protect every external connection to the computer: phone, DSL, cable, coax from TV antenna, whatever. I live in an area known for violent thunderstorms and much equipment is lost to spikes: modems, DSL modems, motherboards, etc. A surge protector is cheap compared to the potential loss. Fred

[opensuse] cdrecord error on creating VCD

Hi, I'm trying to create a VCD with cdrecord (cdrecord-2.01-25 of the SUSE Linux 10.1 distribution): cdrecord -dev=ATAPI:0,0,0 -v -dao speed=1 cuefile="/data/video.cue" But it failed on several attempts (also using k3b). Note that I get the identical error message even if I use the -dummy option of cdrecord. [opensuse] virtual network interface?

Hi, SuSE 9.0 accepted files /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg-eth0:0 to setup a virtual device eth0:0 with a private IP, while eth0 was the public one. I haven't found a way to do that on SuSE 10.1? If I use the ifcfg-eth0:0 file, eth0:0 is tried to setup during boot, but fails. I tried to configure it with yast, but yast proposes a device "eth-0:0", and when I set this up and call "ifup eth-0:0" afterwards, it says "Interface eth-0:0 is not available". Calling "ifconfig eth0:0 ..." manually works, but I want a config file in /etc/sysconfig/network so that the device is handled automatically. Is this possible? cu, Frank -- Dipl.-Inform. SPAM: Need Router Recommendation

I've just lost my router. There was a power outage here and the power went on and off 2 or three times. Apparently, that did in my router, even though it was behind a surge protector. It is/was a Linksys RV042. That's the second Linksys router I've lost in the past 5 years. Maybe 2 1/2 years is about average for a router, I have no idea. Anyway, I see a log of negative press on this site regarding Linksys products and I think I'd like to try switching brands. I know there is some other brand that has been highly recommended, but I just can't remember what that brand was. Anyway, could someone give me a router recommendation (along with a good place to make an online purchase, if possible)? Thanks, Greg Wallace

smart info & a different question

Some of you have probably read some of the long threads on smart the past week aor so re: problems running smart on 10.0 Several reported the same symptoms. O sent of an email to Mark Schiffbauer and he in turn forwarded it to Pascal Bleser. He replied to my message within two days. Basically, here is what he said. "Bob, wrong assumption. Of course we do not copy metadata as-is from 10.1 to 10.0. You are most probably using smart-0.42-13 (check with "rpm -q smart"). That release had a bug because of a patch submitted by someone. Upgrade smart to 0.42-14, fixes the bug. If you use the smart package from the Build Service [1], I think it still has the bug, so better switch to my smart package in the "guru" repository." Great guys !! Can't believe how supportive they are to us. Anyway, did what he said and those other problems went away. However, I have a new one that has come up and I don't know how to solve it. After downloading everything (220 mb)I get this message from smart. "Committing transaction... error: ogmtools-1.5-2 requires libdvdread.so.3()(64bit) error: vamps-0.99.2-0.pm.0 requires libdvdread.so.3()(64bit) error: dvdauthor-0.6.11-0.pm.1 requires libdvdread.so.3()(64bit) error: transcode-1.0.2-0.pm.3 requires libdvdread.so.3()(64bit) error: vobcopy-1.0.0-0.pm.0 requires libdvdread.so.3()(64bit) error: lsdvd-0.16-0.pm.0 requires libdvdread.so.3()(64bit)" I DO have libdvdread installed and the libdvdread.so.3 is present in /usr/lib and /usr/lib64 Please help if you can. Biggest objection I have to smart is that if you run into a glitch like this it will not upgrade anything. You cannot hold back packages like you could with apt.
