New mobo, sata drive and X86_64 question

Hello! I have just purchased a new msi mobo with and Athlon 64 together with a SATA II harddrive, I plan on installing the OpenSuSE 10.1 X86_64 on the sata drive and was curious if there is anything specific I need to know before I commence. Also, is it possible to have the sata drive as the primary boot device along with an EIDE drive on one of the ide interfaces. zen again, dammit (pretty long)

Well, here we go again. The blot turned orange again last night, and the updater said there were (yet again) dozens of updates, mostly involving kde. After it quit on its own a couple of times, I deselected everything and tried the piecemeal thing I've mentioned before. It handled the kdebase set just fine, then the kdebind set. Then, on kdeextras it hung at 1% for a good hour. So I killed it and tried with YOU. No good. I restarted the zen updater, and it hung at 1% for 10-15 minutes. Disgusted, I went off to do something else, and came back a couple of hours later to kill it and try again. It was at 13%. OK, so something is responding slowly. I let it continue, and after a couple more hours it was at 23%. Now, 10 hours later, it has failed completely at 33%. Now, I've got a third of an update, which could mean a system crash when I try to restart kde. I'll try restarting the updater, but I'm pretty discouraged right now. I don't believe it's a network problem; my wife's xp pro computer and my new xp pro laptop (which I hadn't installed suse on yet) were humming along just fine. I started with suse because it was rock-solid, installed with practically no issues, and these fora were helpful and considerate for the few I did have. I bought retail boxes of 5.0, 7.0, and 9.0 Pro (actually, I bought Mandrake 8.2 after 7.0, and came back). I agree with those who say 10.x is even better. Except for this zen catastrophe. I'm glad others are having such a good time with zen. I've tried hard to follow all the instructions, and I've let zen do its thing except when it crashed and, on the advice of others on this list, used YOU to recover kernel and kde updates. I've also, in desperation, tried kpackage occasionally with limited success. Smart and apt-get seem to me to be workarounds like kpackage, and seem to give their users just as much trouble as we're getting from zen. I am getting quite tired of this. If I have to reinstall yet again (this will be the third time on 10.1), it's not likely to be suse. Maybe someday, after they've got themselves straightened out. -- John Perry

SPAM: Evolution hack for miss marked email [SOLVED]

Recently I tried something odd editing a file under ~/.evolution/mail/local> Specifically having this mail incorrectly marked in the Subject header as "S-P-A-M". I copied these emails over to a holder called dummy. I used gedit to search and replace these markings and deleted the index. Upon restarting evolution the emails were corrected and when I moved them back to the original holder they were in place with no threads broken just the sort. I then reselected the misnamed mail and deleted it. This gave me a clean folder. Ill deal with the email providers mistakes later but for now my local mail is corrected. Thanks for reading. Strange audio problem

Hello all Resending this with a different subject line, first time got no response. I can't get sound output as a regular user, but I can as root. I have a very funny sound problem. If I log in as root I have no problems with sound, If I log in as any other user I can not hear mp3 files, audio CD's or video DVD's. It was working fine until I updated something or installed a new package. Can not trace back to the moment it started. I am using Suse 10 rada@pavilion:~> uname -r 2.6.13-15.12-default rada@pavilion:~> rpm -qa alsa* alsamixergui-0.9.0rc1-546 alsa-firmware-1.0.13-0.pm.0 alsa-tools-gui-1.0.13-0.pm.0 alsa-devel-1.0.9-23 alsa-tools-1.0.13-0.pm.0 alsa-1.0.13-0.pm.0 If I log into root's deskotp, sound works without a problem. If I log in to any other users desktop there is no sound. If I log into a non root users' desktop and then in a console log in as root and try to play a sound file I get no sound. I am asking for help since I have no clue as to how to approach the problem. I really don't even know how to google for this one, I've tried without success. I don't have gnome desktop installed, but in Icewm and FVWM desktops there is also no sound output, so I do not thik it is a function of a kde problem itself. but this is a list of KDE packages related to sound that I am using Any ideas on how to proceed to fix it? SPAM: Staring programs at boot - first time at doing this

On SuSE 10.0 booting to level 3 command line only. I'm looking to start a postgresql database on boot and have a command line ready to key in. Into which file(s) should I put it to ensure that it executes on system reboot? Do I need to do anything else to activate it apart from a reboot? Thanks John

SPAM: To all users of smart package manager

Several days ago smart was upgraded to .42-14 and I noticed that the ksmarttray now does not update the channels on bootup nor at the regular intervals while the system was running as in the past. I have to manually use the package manager to update the channels (and in most cases I find that there are upgrades waiting to be performed). Anyone else having the same experience? I asked in the smart mail list if something had changed in smart but was told (by Pascal Bleser) that nothing had changed. Not sure if they are relevant. Thanks for the suggestion. Any other ideas? I think 10.2 is coming out in December, I would like to fix this before that if possible. I have thought of upgrading to 10.1 but would like to avoid that if at all possible. Gustav
